I was hoping for wok-seared noodles with more texture, but it was drowned in sauce with no visible char on the noodles. I loved the huge shrimp. We always WANT to like this place and have given them several opportunities to prove that they're serious about running a clean restaurant, but we are invariably disappointed. We are partial to sitting at restaurant bars when we go out to eat. The Shanghai Bistro bar is always in need of a wipe-down when we sit down at an otherwise barely occupied bar. We love the food, but when we have to ask the completely uninterested bartender to clean his bar, this gets the experience off to an unpleasant beginning. We've had the same bartender each of the three times we've been there and each time it seems as if he'd rather be anywhere but there. Even after leaving a note on my credit card slip last time suggesting he take more pride in his department, the bar area is still in pretty sorry shape. Shanghai Bistro used to be PACKED on weeknights as well as weekends. Even on a Wednesday night -- which is their sushi special night -- the fact that the place had perhaps 20 diners demonstrates that something has gone wrong. We will undoubtedly return despite these last three unpleasant experiences. We simply hope that reviews such as this one will reach the eyes of those who need to read them. read more

We were the first ones seated for lunch, so why it took 10 minutes for us to be able to place a drink order and then another 10 minutes to place our food order is beyond me. And an adorable little robot brings out your apps and meals, so the servers only need to take orders and follow-up for refills (which we would have liked refills but never got). Also weird that when you order sushi rolls you only get a fork and have to flag someone down for chopsticks. We went with the Maui, Dragon, Hawaiian, Spider and California rolls. The best ones in our opinion were the Hawaiian and Spider rolls. My husband stopped eating the Hawaiian rolls after he was jabbed with a salmon pin bone. Will we be back? Not sure. While it was obvious that the sushi rolls are well-made, there is better tasting sushi to be had in the area, and certainly better service. read more

This restaurant quickly became my go to for dinner when I am in town for work. The service is excellent. Your meal will be delivered by our soon-to-be robotic overlords. They aren't as warm and as personable as Kumar's Wafflebot, but it makes up for it with its R2-D2 speech pattern. Doesn't hurt to tip them generously for when Judgement Day arrives. They have delicious sushi, but they have the best Crispy Duck that I've ever had. read more

The online ordering service doesn't work the best, I was advised after getting there the order doesn't go through until the exact time you selected to pick it up and I arrived 10 minutes early from two hours out of town so had to wait about a half an hour. The bar tender wasn't the nicest to me but struck very genuine and nice conversations with the regulars and I expressed my first time and was met almost with a hostility. However the bao was great and the meat so tender and juicy but I wasn't a huge fan of it being a DIY bao and no silverware included. I will be back, I've heard the egg rolls are good and I did enjoy the bao so I'll have to get the other kind. read more

It was a very cold night so I decided to get a bowl of pho but I was very disappointed at the flavor, the noodle selection, and the protein selection they had in their pho. They used very thick noodles. There were only slices of beef in the pho. It almost taste like the flat clear MAMA noodles which was not worth the money. I wish I had tried other items on the menu. This was the saddest bowl of pho I have ever eaten. Where is the star anise? The clove? What about the cinnamon? The broth was so bland, it tasted like someone dumped a box of beef broth, sprinkled it with MSG, heated it up, & called it good. I needed to use so much sriracha to give it some sort of flavor & even then, it wasn't very good. The noodles were odd, thicker & denser than your normal pho rice noodle. Plus they were over cooked, which made it so incredibly difficult to control & eat with chopsticks or a fork. I didn't eat half of it. You cannot call this pho when you are missing all of the ingredients that make it. My "pho" came out without basil, when it states on the menu it comes with it. I asked for basil, our waiter went to the kitchen & came back to tell me that they don't have any. Lol. We are one hour & a half into your business hours & you're already out of basil? Weird. You were sure to give my boyfriend some on his drunken noodles! Luckily his dish doesn't need basil like pho does & he was willing to give me his. Our waters were never refilled without us asking, my boyfriend's food was mediocre, but his parents enjoyed theirs. My partner & I won't be coming back here any time soon. read more

Service was great. The robot part was cute but unnecessary. Food was excellent. My only criticism is they use too much rice in their sushi rolls and compact it down so it makes a thick rice shell over the fish and hides some of the flavor of the sushi. I would definitely go back. read more

Just had dinner at Shanghai Bistro, and to say it was disappointing is saying too little. The service, what little there was of it, was slow and inattentive. We had to ask other servers for help. The robot that delivered our food was fun, but I prefer the human touch, that's why I go out to eat. We did mention to our server that the egg rolls tasted off, I think the pork was bad, and he did nothing about it, not even an apology or an attempt to correct the issue. (They were still on the bill when we paid) My husband and I will not be going back. We were not even given fortune cookies at the end of our meal! Save your money and go to Panda Express. read more

Ordered takeout. I like tofu when it's cooked right - or cooked at all. This was just "firm" tofu which would not even stay in one piece, uncooked, and warmed in gilletinos snot. I suppose I should be grateful the snot was completely flavorless. The rice was undercooked, but the outer third was soft. Most went in the trash. This place has gone way down hill. If you are looking for Asian food, this is a good choice. The decorations and seating are nice, along with good views and an outdoor area. The Chinese food is good, but nothing great. The service was also good. I ordered crab rangoons and spring rolls for appetizers. They were okay, but I have had much better. Same goes for the general tsao's chicken and Mongolian beef. Make all the vegan jokes you want but I promise you, vegans know flavor and this pho lacked it big time. Also, there were drunken noodles on the menu and the entire dish tasted like lo mein that they tried to pass off as drunken noodles. It's like giving you spaghetti when you ordered carbonara. Two completely different dishes. The noodles were thin when they were supposed to be extra thick and the entire experience was just terrifying. I will never come back here again. I don't understand how you can rate this restaurant higher than two stars. We came in at 6pm and decided to sit Patio-side. There is a dumpster on the left side of the patio so we chose to sit on the right side. The patio furniture is cheap, uncomfortable, and pathetic. We asked to be re-seated in the dining area inside because it smelt like garbage, to which our waiter even agreed. The menu has the average chinese/japanese options.The pot stickers was made with extremely salty ground beef; we didn't even finish it. The popcorn shrimp was okay, the portion size was small and not worth five dollars. My chicken lo mein was no good; it was incredibly bland with no flavor! I asked for it to be extra spicy and it barely had any trace of sauce or salt. My shrimp tempura roll was extremely basic and not worth six dollars. I've never had a cremee brulee so I cannot compare Shanghai Bistro's to others', but the caramel was burnt on top. The friends I came with showed equal distaste to their dishes. I really regret the 35.xx I spent here. I don't know how this place can serve these dishes proudly. If you want Asian food there are plenty of other places in Eau Claire. I will not be coming back or recommending this place to anyone. read more

This place has always been a favorite of mine! My besties and I used to come here all the time! The menu has changed quite a bit! They have a wonderful selection but no longer have my favorite item, which was the poo poo platter! The sushi rolls are so big it took me three bites to eat one piece! That's for sure a plus in my eyes! And to top it off they tasted amazing!Their prices however have went up! But that's what happens when u update an amazing place like this! The atmosphere is really nice and up to date! The servers were all super nice and helpful with the items we weren't familiar with! Just finished eating here with my husband. It was pretty slow but it was 2pm. We ordered spring rolls and egg rolls and found that there wasn't any meat..it was basically just cabbage filled, but they were good regardless. I ordered beef with scallops combo and was pleasantly surprised. There's a Different flavor than what's around Eau Claire in their sauces..I just can't figure out what it is. My husband ordered the strange chicken combo, he said it wasn't really spicy but we're both pretty comfortable with spicy food. But he said it was good. My work ordered take-out from this restaurant for a co-worker's going away party. I ordered the mushu (sp?) pork and I'm not going to lie, it was delicious. What wasn't so great was the stomach pains that started immediately after, and lasted into the night. Probably some of the worst stomach cramping I've ever felt, to the point I almost went to the ER. I thought it was just me, and wanted to give this restaurant the benefit of the doubt, because I really enjoyed the food, but one of my co-workers ate her leftovers for lunch the following day, and had to go home a few hours later from the same thing I felt. I was a fan of Shanghai Bistro years ago before it closed. Having not been back since the "revamp", we decided to stop in while we were in town for some dinner before hitting the road and heading home. I definitely noticed some changes in the menu (no more teriyaki beef), but the menu appeared to have grown. The food is still great. I'm a huge fan of the cashew chicken. This is the only place that I've been able to find cashew chicken made like this in the last 3 decades. It is kind of a big deal. The gyoza are still excellent. I tried the crab ragoons for the first time. I love the sauce they came with. Service during our visit was...a little slow. When we got there, there were maybe 5 other tables. At one point, it got up to 7 maybe. We saw three people working. One guy we saw once and never saw again - maybe the bartender? And the second person we saw mostly seemed to be clearing tables. Our waiter was going back and forth and from table to table. He was clearly busy, and possibly overwhelmed. The not so great part of our visit? The awful, racist old women seated next to us. Our waiter was clearly a little overwhelmed, but we never saw him sit down or talk with other waitstaff. He just kept going back and forth and bringing this and bringing that. It was obvious he was forgetting things. Eventually, these nasty old women started being very curt, rude and icy towards him. Then, it turned into racist comments when he would walk away from the table. By the time we left, the nastier of the two beasties was telling the other how she was going to complain about him. Our waiter was a very nice young man. He made excellent recommendations when asked. He was working incredibly hard. He had very nice manners and was clearly trying very hard to do his best. He was bringing food out hot and ready. Yeah... he needed reminding about filling the water glasses a time or two and we needed to wait 10 minutes for the check. It was really no big deal. It's one thing when service is bad... it's another when service is understaffed. I don't think he heard the nasty comments, but I'm sure he noticed the bad attitudes and rudeness. He kept his cool and kept trying to do his best. My only reason for taking away a star is that I believe it was understaffed in the restaurant. read more

The orange chicken was soggy and it wasn't sweet, but had a decent taste. The cali roll had little flavor other than fish, quite disappointing to say the least. Bang for your buck I can't complain, but I must say it's a great example of quantity over quality. Don't see myself coming again anytime soon in the future. read more

Ordered delivery early on a Thursday evening and the food took about an hour to arrive. The rangoon was really overbreaded and dry. The fried rice was really flavorless and boring - no veggies or anything. Everything else was OK. I ordered a bean curd dish but was delivered a chicken dish. Likely a mix up when bagging the order, as everything else was correct. I submitted an email through their website, over three days later still no response. I sent a message through facebook, and the message was seen, but not replied. I would at least expect an "I'm sorry", or an acknowledgement, as both messages were polite. Substandard food, crummy customer service, can't imagine going back with much better options around. read more

The miso soup was excellent, but the sushi was just...off. My shrimp tempura roll had an odd taste that I couldn't place (I almost swore that the shrimp was beer battered or something strange), that kind of made it difficult to eat. Shanghai Bistro is a somewhat chic Chinese joint surrounded by gas stations and seedy motels. It's close to campus but a bit far from downtown Eau Claire. That said, it seems to draw a crowd, and gets busy after 5 p.m. I had an avocado roll ($4 regular, $3 on happy hour before 5 p.m.) which was pretty basic being just rice, nori and avocado, but tasty enough. I also had a house-style tofu ($8) but had to get the dish modified, as the normal sauce may or may not contain oyster sauce (I never got a clear answer from the waitress, who didn't seem to know, but said she'd make sure my dish was totally vegan). As such, make sure to ask questions about ingredients, as the vegetable and tofu dishes might be a bit fishy. The dish was passable; I found it bland and skimpy on the vegetables. Also, there was no option for brown rice, which makes me weep at every instance. The service was decent though not terribly friendly or attentive. If you're in Eau Claire and looking for unusual cocktails or a fun night at a bar, this is a good spot, as it has both interesting drinks and lots of people. If you're looking for good Chinese food, you probably should drive 90 miles west to Minneapolis. read more

Service was .. meh. The appetizers were tasty, but nothing memorable (they serve takoyaki, which is a huge plus for me, but the taste was average). The sushi we ordered (shrimp tempura, octopus, salmon) were okay, they looked a bit strange in color (probably due to the restaurant lighting) but tasted good. I think they need to do some extra dusting, and maybe have brighter lights. I'm fond of cozy lamps and low lighting, but it feels a bit off in Shanghai. The entrees got mixed reviews. I ordered the Fried Udon (?) which was presented very messily but tasted superb. My partner ordered the Strange Chicken dish, which he downright hated (and trash talked for about another 3 hours after we left) (and even said he would've rather gone to a buffet). The pad thai dish, which was ordered by my brother also didn't make any impression. It was edible, but he wouldn't choose to eat it again. Overall, the only significant impressions I got from this restaurant are that having live music is pretty cool and I'll probably only be coming back for an order of takoyaki, but only because Shanghai is the only close restaurant selling it. read more

The host was friendly and took us right to our table and that was the last we talked to anyone that worked there. Nobody acknowledged us! We sat for 15 mins and nobody said a word to us. Servers walked by but none stopped. I went up to tell the host that we have not gotten a server yet and he apologized and said someone would be right over. 10 more mins went by and nothing! When I'm in the mood for sushi...this is the place to go. I've heard their Peking Duck is delicious...need to order 24 hours in advance though. Intend to have it some day. I was just there the other day, and they were out of both salad greens AND wasabi! What kind of sushi restaurant runs out of wasabi?! Very busy place on a Friday night! Told us 40 minute wait, but were seated in 20 minutes. Ordered cocktails at the bar and were served in the smallest juice glasses, literally about 6 ounces, for $4.50 a drink of rail rum and coke. Order a beer if you go!! Ordered sushi and was mildy disappointed. Ordered a couple Maki rolls (the more deluxe-type rolls) and found them to be very bland and somewhat dried out tasting. Ordered a couple Nigiri (simple sushi rolls) and those were actually better. Did start with an order of Gyoza (Pot Stickers) and found those to be really good. I had a very good take out dinner from Shanghai Bistro. I did go inside briefly and the atmosphere was very nice. My hot and sour soup was spicy and tasty. My Szechuan chicken main dish was excellent but the accompanying rice (for $1 I opted for fried) wasn't up to par. Portions were generous. For a guy from foodie Portland Maine, finding good takeout Chinese food in Eau Claire Wisconsin was a very pleasant surprise. read more
