All of the food was very mediocre, it does not live up to the older reviews of the past. We went right at opening on a Saturday night and they were already out of ingredients for many dishes on the menu. The server was unkempt and socially inept, unable to provide food or drink recommendations and suggested that certain dishes and drink were annoying to the staff when ordered. I have a hard time with Hibachi restaurants no matter how good the food. After a few visits they loose the appeal to me. For me the long meal time, high prices and at best good but not great food isn't overcome by the appeal of a personal chef and dancing flames. With that said Tokyo Japanese Restaurant executes well within this genre, everything tasted good, prices were reasonable, our chef was engaging and we had a great conversation with the family we were seated with. Also all of the sauces were made fresh in house which kicked it up a notch. This is the only Hibachi restaurant I have been to however that did not make fresh fried rice on the grill. It came out of the kitchen and was cold and oily. It was clearly a busy night too which slowed things down and our salads were never brought out (there was still plenty to eat though). read more

Wow---we are traveling thru Eau Claire and wanted dinner delivered to our hotel. Tokyo Japanese with Doordash was what we found and it was amazing. The food arrived in a nice paper shopping bag with a seal indicating it was not opened after packed (an excellent covid protocol we appreciated). It was still hot and even in the take out containers, the presentation was beautiful- almost like on a personal platter. Our entrees had unique exciting flavors. I had the Ramen Tofu with shiitake mushrooms and lots of complimentary flavors. I loved the panic crusted tofu served separately so it didn't get soggy on the delivery. Bill had the Yakisoba Shrimp and the mayo sauce was wonderful, just the right amount of spice. Dumpling and spring rolls were as expected and good. Being rather new to the area, my wife and I are try to go to a new place each time we have dinner out. Last night we were fortunate enough to enjoy this restaurant. Dinners there feature a teppanyaki chef preparing food at your table (it was our first time dining in such a restaurant). Aside from that show, it is a good place to enjoy conversation with other patrons as it can be a small wait while the chef makes his way to your table. The dining tables are a C-shape around the hibachi. As you're seated the waitress, dressed in traditional Japanese attire like the whole staff, ask you to introduce yourself to the others at the table which can create a very social atmosphere. The menu is not very extensive at one side of an open book, but offers a nice selection of steak, pork, chicken, shrimp, fish, and seafood. I had the ginger pork and my wife the teriyaki cod. The prices are very moderate. The average is around $15 and includes soup, salad, entree, and tea. The location of the restaurant is in an small older-looking strip mall row of shops, but the interior is very nice. Reservations are not necessary but I would strongly recommend them as they have to work to fill a table with guests before the chef comes by to prepare the meals. They seated us without a reservation, but we came right as they opened for dinner. I've giving this five stars though I'll repeat this the first time I've been to a teppanyaki-style restaurant and I may revisit this review if I dine at another. read more

For an authentic Japanese experience with excellent food every time, I recommend Tokyo. I have been a regular at Tokyo for almost five years now. Chef/Owner Yoshi has honed his recipes to perfection. I have never been disappointed. The first thing to say about Tokyo is the shrimp is amazing. My wife and I order extra shrimp with every meal. I haven't had better. All sauces and salad dressings are made in house that day. The new york strip, hibachi chicken, and cod are also worth trying. For those who like it hot, ask for hot mustard or wasabi to mix with your sauces. I also recommend coming for lunch (W-F). The lunch menu is different from the dinner menu and includes dishes such as tempura shrimp/chicken/veggies served in elegant Japanese boxes. Where do I start? I was born and raised in Marshfield, WI (about an hour from Eau Claire, WI). In Marshfield, there is a teppanyaki-style restaurant there that I loved called Royal Tokyo. Side note: I do not want this to be all about hyping up Royal Tokyo, but honestly, it is the best food you or I will probably ever eat. GO THERE, you won't be disappointed. Anyways, since my experience with Royal Tokyo, I decided to try Tokyo, hoping to have the same experience. Unfortunately, I didn't. My first time I went to Tokyo, I had the chicken. I expected the chicken to have some kind of flavor to make it original and different - some kind of sauce or seasoning. Turns out, it had nothing on it. I think the chef put some kind of seeds on the chicken and a spritz of soy sauce. Um....I COULD MAKE THIS AT MY HOUSE and I don't know what the hype about this place is. After a year, I was visiting a friend in Eau Claire and he was from Marshfield, so he knew all about Royal Tokyo in Marshfield. So I told him about Tokyo and told him the food sucked, but he still wanted to try. He got the chicken and I decided to try the teriyaki steak. The steak wasn't that great and my friend was blown away with the chicken - in a bad way. I will give ratings of my entire meal: Miso soup - C (Decent, but didn't finish it) Salad - D (Horrible) Chicken - F (I honestly could make this at my house) Teriyaki Steak - C (Cooked well, but nothing spectacular) Tea - A (I don't even care for tea, but it tasted like....TEA) Please, go to Royal Tokyo in Marshfield. This place is a gem! The food is AMAZING. I came with a larger group so I got to try a little bit of everything. There was not one thing that was subpar. Everything cooked to perfection. The shrimp really is the best in town! The service is also superb. I was really excited to go to Tokyo restaurant to try their ramen. They're only serving it for lunch. I had the shoyu tare with pork belly. It was unfortunately quite bland and they hadn't removed the strings from around the pork belly - unpleasant to find in your meal. I can only hope that they improve with time. I've lived in Eau Claire all my life and I remember when Tokyo opened up 21 years ago. Sadly, they haven't changed a thing since then. While the decor is very dated, the food is above average. A few things really turn me off at this place: the dishes are stained from age which makes them appear dirty. I expect disposable wooden chopsticks with my Chinese take-out, but there is no excuse for them here. Drink service is SLOW. When seated at a table it can become extremely cramped which forces you to concentrate on not bumping elbows with a fellow patron. Menu has not changed in 21 years. Have loved Teppanyaki since I was a young teen in the SF Bay Area some 30 years ago, and in all my days and all my travels I have yet to find a place that makes better food. Yes, their ambiance is old and in need of repair in some places, the plates are heavy ceramic and are I'm sure sterilized in the dishwasher but don't appear stained to me (as one other review complained about). They could use an interior designer to come in and help - but oh WOW do I LOVE their food!!!! Based purely on the food this is THE BEST Japanese restaurant in Eau Claire, and quite possibly everywhere else as well. We've traveled extensively in Hawaii, California, Arizona, Washington state, Colorado, Oregon, Florida, Minnesota... and nowhere else have I found Japanese food as good as it is here. We recently tried out the new Fuji and I disliked their teppanyaki shrimp (they do have good sushi though, so will go there for that) - I literally lost my appetite and couldn't finish my food even though I was not full. Instead I offered my leftovers it to my nearly grown sons, but they never ate the leftovers from Fuji's either. At Tokyo's the shrimp very simply is THE BEST! Sometimes their sign out front boasts "Best Shrimp In Town" and that is indeed true. We have a system for their sauces - first we dip in the white sauce (the one they call mustard) and then dip in the brown sauce (the one they call ginger) - the combination of those sauces at the same time on their shrimp is heaven on earth!! Everything else is awesome too. One of my sons always gets the Seafood #2, the other son loves their Steak and Shrimp dinner, I always always always get the shrimp dinner with an appetizer of scallops (they come with the dinner actually, so not really an appetizer, but damn they are GOOD!) So bottom line, while in Eau Claire if you want the most amazing Japanese Teppanyaki come to Tokyo's... if you want beautiful surroundings, a party-hardy atmosphere, decent sushi then go to Fuji's. read more

My family has been coming here for years. I love the shrimp, calamari, and that mustard sauce! The food is the highlight. There isn't as much "flair" as other Hibachi grills but the food and service are wonderful. After reading glowing reviews here, I decided to give Tokyo a shot. BTW I'm new to town. We went there after Thanksgiving around 8.30pm and our group was the only one there. Unlike the other reviewers, I was not impressed by the food at all. To add to the mediocre taste, I was quite disappointed to find that the fried rice was not prepared on the grill. Oh well I thought until our waitress brought the fried rice in the bowls for us from inside, it was very evident that it had been cooked hours before and sitting there - very bland. I mean it doesn't take much to prepare fried rice. It takes me no more than 15 minutes with cooked rice when I do it at home from scratch. In a hot work, anything but 5 mins. And they charge extra for it. Not sure if they did this because they were about to close or what. Will not be venturing out to this Teppenyaki grill again. read more

We got the dinner special that includes soup salad and the dinner with two meat choices. The soup was so good! The salad wasn't the greatest. It was a boring salad and the dressing they put on was not my taste. The food itself was pretty typical but our chef was super nice. He was interacting with us so it made the experience less awkward. The woman who was refilling our drinks and rice was beyond nice and overall it was enjoyable and if I was in the area I would definitely check it out. The food here is as authentic as it gets with the owner Yoshi frequently cooking on the Hibachi. The ginger salad dressing is SOOO good as well as the steak, shrimp and chicken. They make their own sauces for dipping your meat into, one is called mustard (but does not resemble any mustard I know of) and then another ginger type sauce (different than what is on the salad). First dip your meat into the 'mustard' sauce and then the ginger and enjoy! They recently raised menu prices about 20% so dinner for two entree only is about $22.00 each not including drinks (hot green tea is included with meal). Still the BEST teppanyaki in Western Wisconsin. read more

I don't know about teppanyaki, we go for the traditional Japanese lunches. The tempura has the lightest crispest batter anywhere. The tendon is perfectly prepared and the shrimp yasai with vegetables is grilled and smoky flavored. We eat lunch here every week. You can't do better in Eau Claire.
