Made the mistake of ordering steak terriyaki, which arrived cold and uncooked, with a little sterno thing-y on which I was supposed to grill meat to a delectable sizzling finish. But it was unlit, and they could not get it to stay lit (waitress lights, leaves, flame goes out, flag down elusive waitress, repeat). Asked them to cook it in the kitchen. They brought it back cold and uncooked. I told them to forget it and ate rice for lunch. While they took it off the bill they offered no apology or recompense and I left unfed, since we needed to get back on the road. Will not return. read more

I've really enjoyed Shanghai. We frequented the place quite a bit during the two years I lived in Eau Claire. Prices are pretty cheap for appetizers, the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings are excellent! Always a fan of the Spicy Tuna roll, and we really enjoy the Shrimp Tempura, despite the review that did not. They offer great deals - sushi happy hour, and the lunch prices are great. $4-5 for most options, and I usually end up with leftovers. $4 for two meals - not a bad deal in my book! Will definately be stopping back in next time I'm in town. read more

Lo mein was flavorless, the mangolian beef had no flavor, and the sesame chicken was red and kethupy. 7 sesame seeds sprinkled on top and consider it sesame chicken. Tried to add flavor and asked for hot chili oil, was told it would be 60 cents. Wow! No thanks. I don't expect authentic Chinese, but I love American Chinese but this was extremely amateur. Everything I have ever ordered there has been delicious and the atmosphere is really pleasant, especially when they have their live music going. First visit here, but because Ninja closed thought give this a try. All seemed ok, after being seated at the sushi bar waitress left and never really returned to take my order, however the sushi chef was all over it and made rolls as well as put in my order for the fried rice. They still made a regular Philly roll even though not offered and was good,as was the shrimp tempura (which was different if you like a shrimp roll but not bad) but the fried rice was pretty flavorless and bland nothing exciting. Not the best sushi bar, but far from the worst. Will definitely visit again to update rating. read more

We have dined here three times, and none of those times were super memorable in terms of food. The decor is nice and it's probably a good place to take a date, but... That doesn't make up for the pretty flavorless entrées, like the Orange Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken. The sushi is alright, but not the best in town. Ordered some entrees from here (orange chicken, crispy duck, and shrimp tempura roll). Orange chicken was very bland. No flavoring to it whatsoever. The Crispy Duck wasn't even crispy. Skin was soggy and you couldn't taste any of the marinade. Not worth ($12.50 and $17) for these dishes. The tempura roll was at best a half roll. ($6) definitely not worth getting. I noticed a lot of the specialty rolls have gone up in price. $20/ roll is definitely overpriced for this small town considering you can get something similar to it if not better for $4-5 cheaper elsewhere. I definitely will not be ordering from here again and if you're reading this review, try a different restaurant! read more

TL/DR: very good first impression! Good sushi. Had sushi here, first time eating at Shanghai Bistro. My wife and I were regular diners at Ninja Japanese House until it closed recently. We ate there or at a different sushi place every 2 weeks for 3 years. I'm not a check-in freak though. I ordered a rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, yellowtail & scallion roll, and octopus sashimi. The sashimi was very good. Octopus was not tough, was served with cucumber & lemon to add to the flavor. Very fresh tasting. The yellowtail & scallion roll was great, and not oniony. Rainbow roll was pretty average. Not quite as good of construction as the others. Spicy tuna roll was very very spicy! It was almost a bit much for me, but bearable. My wife had the Jou nigiri sampler. Most sushi places call this a sushi deluxe? 10 nigiri, spicy tuna roll, soup and salad. The salad was good, but probably too big for a side salad. We both had miso soup, and agreed it was a bit too much onion. Not bad, though. Most places don't put octopus nigiri in with the sushi deluxe, but they did, to her delight. Also, places we've been to dont put wasabi under the fish on the nigiris, they usually leave that up to the end user's preference. She was a bit surprised by it, but they used the right amount of wasabi, so it wasn't a bad surprise. She did say the spicy tuna roll was too hot for her. We also shared a crab Rangoon appetizer, which was done well. The overall atmosphere was nice. Except of course for them leaving the kitchen door open. They were very loudly washing dishes. The trance music was a little weird, but not bad. Seemed pretty formal, otherwise. All in all very good. read more

While looking over other reviews I was shocked to see so many over 2 stars, I wish I could say my experience there with my Family was a five but unfortunately it was a terrible one. Even first walking into the entrance it was very unpleasant there was dirt and tumbleweeds right when you walked in as if it hadn't been touched in months. The atmosphere was very cool, in fact if I owned a restaurant, this would be my ideal atmosphere , but again the cleanliness wasn't up to standard. The food is another topic it was bland in on the unseasoned, the chicken was chewy and fatty it was a very very unpleasant taste. I will say our server was excellent she was very nice and the food came out in a timely matter, but to say the least we will not be going here again. read more

I come from this industry and I respect the work anyone puts in. It's HARD. But we asked to relocate to the patio on a beautiful night, and after we sat down the manager poked their head out and said "you'll probably want to come inside it's so hot". Well, it wasn't so.. and another couple of girls came out after us, and we're not served after about 10-15 mins.. asked us what was up, and I said we were advised not to sit outside, the said wow, we were told the same... they left, totally don't blame them. my husband got his meal and it was not what he expected so he asked for something else in its place politely and was told that's what he ordered and he had to pay regardless, ok that's fine if course we will pay for what we ordered. The demeanor and the attitude exhorted by more than one individual was like incomprehensible. And we're friends with half of the kitchen staff. Sorry we were the worst to serve apparently. Total experience was a joke and we have been warned. Disappointing $90 bill for start to end experience. read more

Considering where you are (bum fuck nowhere WI), this is damn good sushi! I've been there several times, sat at the sushi bar and chatted with the sushi chefs. I always have a good time (the saki bombs may have something to do with that)! I always order their red dragon roll. I'm pretty sure it's not on the menu, so ask for it as a specialty. i've been coming here for a good 10 years and shanghai has never let me down. it rules, always has. the remodel is great. the happy hour bangs. always good service. the bathrooms are clean and cute. i've been really into the lychee martini lately, its kind of goofy and fruity which i appreciate. this is a great spot to swing in for a drink and have some appetizers but also solid for a date or special occasion when you're looking to flex a bit. menu is really diverse which is nice because if you're heavy into authentic cuisine there's plenty of options, but if you just want some orange chicken you can score that too. a+ patio. solid nigiri & rolls. great drinks. rad service. nice folks. you can't go wrong unless you stay home. read more

We arrived around 8:30 and had some good food and drinks, but we were alerted by our server that it was not a "tavern" and that the bar and restaurant would be closing at ten (in spite of it being a Saturday night and no closing time listed online or at the actual place). Our food took forever and then they shut the lights off on us around 9:45 so we left our drinks and apps unfinished, paid, and left. Seemed like a nice place but I doubt I'll go back. read more

I've only had the sashimi and some select rolls; I've never tried their actual dishes, but I hear great things. When they first opened, the quality of their fish was more than I would expect from Wisconsin, but since then, it has sort of diminished. I'm a big fan of their Godzilla roll, which is off menu. And their cheap lunch specials are on point so people tell me. I enjoy the live music in the evenings-- it's different than what you'd normally expect. Used to love eating here. Boy have the past year changed this place. Service was TERRIBLE. She couldn't remember our order, couldn't remember what came with the dinner. Tokoyaki dumplings were raw. The had NO salad. You serve 2 things with dinner on your menu, salad and miso soup. No kids plates. They used to do 1/2 orders. No more. Sushi was not it's normal quality. Cuts were bad, couldn't eat the spicy tuna roll it was so salty, sashimi tuna was not sushi grade tuna but more like store bought tuna steak. Not that nice clean sushi tuna taste but fishy. The artistry of the plate was great, but that was it. My daughter had orange chicken and the tempura batter was heavy and burnt. No bright chicken or orange flavors at all. Oh not to mention our kids meals came out almost 10 minutes after ours. This was 4 pm, 3 other tables eating at that time. We used to love eating here. It was always our date spot. Well no more. So sad to see this place out done by a chain restaurant like Fuji. It used to be intimate. We used to get HamaHama oysters, which were DELICIOUS. Hate giving bad reviews, especially places I used to love. But save your $$. Finally found a great Japanese (and other Asian) restaurant in the Chippewa Valley. Decent prices and everything tasted fresh and well made. Non-greasy veggie fried rice, simple yet well rolled sushi, and fairly good sesame chicken. There were a number of cocktails that looked interesting, and the beer selection was adequate.
