The food is kinda pricey for dinner, but it is good. People are nice and it's a calm atmosphere.

Sometimes, it's not fun being single. One of those times is eating out. You get a table for one that's meant to seat a family of four, (which just emphasizes how single you are) and get shuffled to the side while bigger parties are catered to. Not here. I went in as a party of one and got a cozy table to myself. My server was very attentive. Not only did she get me my food and drinks as quickly one would a party of five, but she took the time to explain saki to me. Really explain it. That's what sold me on this place to the end. My sushi experience is limited to just here, so I can't say how it compares to anywhere else, but I will say that I've never had anything I didn't like. They also were very good about accommodating my shellfish allergy and making sure I didn't order something that would require an epi. We really enjoy Shanghai Bistro, especially for their sushi and certain menu items... SUSHI - come here for sushi happy hour and it literally is an amazing deal, the sushi is good and CHEAP!! I believe the hours for that are from 3-5?, so as soon as dinner starts it goes back to normal prices... but even those prices are not that bad compared to other sushi restaurants (some complain it's expensive here but they haven't traveled outside of Eau Claire apparently, we have and we find this place very reasonable). LUNCH SPECIALS!!! - come here for LUNCH!! For the price of a big mac meal you get a lunch special that includes choice of soup, rice, 2 slices of slightly sweetened toast and your choice of an entree - I always get the Orange Chicken because that is the BEST in town! We've had their cashew chicken, Mongolian beef, and those are pretty good too. But the Orange Chicken is the best, so yummo! Dinner: Again, Orange Chicken takes the prize, other decent runner ups are the shrimp curry dinner (I think its found near specials?). They do have a crispy duck something that is good, and you don't have to wait 24 hours to order it. SUSHII!!! We always get a sushi appetizer when here and have never been unhappy with. but there are some items from menu that I have had better at other places... Pad Thai - not so good here, I was disappointed. Get your Pad Thai from of course Pad Thai's. Sesame Chicken - again, not so good. There is a little take out place near where I live that has my favorite Sesame Chicken called Golden Dragon, it's OMG good there. Shrimp w/Mixed Vegetables - when I ordered this from Shanghai's it seemed bland to me, with little flavor. Golden Dragon makes it better IMO and it's cheaper from there to boot. That said though I still confess that Shanghai Bistro still remains one of our families favorite Chinese restaurants in town, we come here often - especially when we are in the mood for sushi and orange chicken. read more

Great atmosphere however they were out of some of their specials n the red wine I drank. Live band. Prices were medium to high. I asked waitress to knock off sum $ cuz they were out of everything I ordered n they refused to accommodate anything. Next time it will be happy hour 3-5pm Mon-Fri. read more

I had the special, Homicide Sushi, and it was terrific. Presentation was excellent, and the taste jumped around your mouth. The rest of us had the lo mein, which was more traditional lo mein thinner noodles, and other veggie dishes were plate licking good. I sometimes forget how good this place is. Although Shanghai Bistro has a very long history in EauClaire, I was very disappointed with the meal I had there today. We entered the restaurant and had to wait for the hostess to notice us because she was busy instructing a bartender about drink construction. The table was sticky, menus were splattered with a variety of sauces. Things went downhill from there. The food was served in bowls with drips down the sides and did not taste very fresh. Frequent customer but recent visit was not good. Seated and waited long enough that had to go find a server and ask for water and drinks. Ordered " House Special" my favorite and it was delivered bland not spicy and without shrimp. By the way shrimp is what makes the special special. I love this place for Sushi here in Eau Claire. They are easy to order from and I have yet to have my order messed up. Usually for pickup my order is ready within 10-15 minutes. My favorite is the Salmon Avocado Roll but the others I've had have been great too. Pricing is also not bad at all so that's a plus. read more

Great sushi. They have a pretty wide variety of stuff on the menu, from sushi to traditional "chinese takeout" stuff like General Tso's chicken. The food is always good and fresh. The dining room fairly modern, with dark woods, suspended lighting, and occasionally live music. One really interesting appetizer to try is the sesame dumplings with red bean paste. They're these little round balls of light dough coated with sesame seeds and stuffed with bean paste that's like chocolate without being sweet. The exterior and entryway need some work, but the remainder of the place isn't bad. It gets crowded and noisy on weekends. Weeknights are usually pretty quite. They have some sort of sushi happy hour with specials too. We usually get takeout from here. read more

Did not have a good experience at this restaurant. We went on a weekday when it was not busy. Told the waitress that we wanted to order the sushi as an appetizer. Our entrees took about 40 minutes to come out and when we asked about our sushi that never came out, the waitress said that the kitchen was still working on them so we ended up canceling it. My Pad Thai was very oily and tasted strange. My friend said his beef and vegetables also tasted off and that the beef was rubbery. Not only was the food and service bad but both of us felt sick later that evening. I'm thinking that they must use a lot of MSG in their dishes. read more

The sushi is good, although the quality has dropped off since they opened a few years ago. Drink service is SLOW. As with most sushi bars, you can get a good view of the kitchen from a seat at the bar. This is not a good thing. The sushi kitchen area has gotten filthy over the years, to the point where it makes you question if it is even safe to order raw fish. My husband and I were driving through Eau Claire for business, happened to see the Shanghai Bistro and thought why not. So glad we did. It was a Saturday night and an adorable jazz trio was playing, very well, I might add. Everything on the menu sounded fantastic. My husband ordered beef with strange sauce (yes, that's what it's called) and I got the orange chicken. We got crab rangoon as an appetizer, it was warm, fresh, creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside. I will say, not much crab, unfortunately. But it was still delicious. The orange chicken was the best orange chicken I have ever had in my life. My husband agreed. A rich, not too sweet sauce, with a nice crispy crunch on the chicken! My only complaint would be that it didn't come with any veggies, some broccoli or peas would have been fantastic with that sauce. My husbands strange sauce with beef and veggies, mostly cabbage, was so good. The sauce had a sweet heat to it, but not spicy enough to distract from the delicious flavor. Our waitress was very nice and helpful, very attentive even with a packed house. Some people were there to enjoy the music, and it was still a pretty relaxed atmosphere. We love to come here for happy hour when it's a little cheaper on certian sushi rolls and get the spider rolls! Sooo yummy but i like all thier sushi as well. I like the darker lighting it feels like we are in our own little world. :) the art work on the wall is cool kind of reminds me of silent hill :) when they have live music it is vert nice as well. Last time I came here was with my boyfriend. I had ordered kung pao chicken, and my boyfriend, a very basic sushi roll. We also ordered an appetizer of gyoza. We were one of 3 tables in the whole place. We waited there for ONE HOUR and fifteen minutes. At that point we hadn't even received our appetizer, with no apology or explanation from our waitress either. We decided to walk out (which I have never done in my life, but if we stayed I would have been late for work). We just couldn't give our money to such poor service. Try harder guys, you're better than that. So disappointing, because this used to be my favorite place to eat. read more

I went there with four friends, two of whom frequent the place. The fried rice looked pretty good, and the coconut curry shrimp looked decent also, though I ordered sushi with my boyfriend. To the server's credit, as soon as I said I wanted the knock out roll, he basically told me "no you don't" without being rude. I said I did want it and regretted not having read the description. This roll is NOTHING but straight wasabi, jalape~no and thai chilis. That is not a sushi roll. It's just a wad of wasabi and peppers. Unfortunately, we ordered two of these rolls. The knock out roll should not even be on the menu. The Godzilla roll (baked), which is not even on the menu is one of the best rolls we've ever had. My boyfriend's favorite ever, and we both eat sushi in a regular basis. We advised the server the knock out should come off the menu, and the Godzilla roll should go on the menu. My egg drop soup was so-so, and my boyfriend had the miso. The tiramisu looked wonderful and was generously portioned. The creme brulee was pretty good and the cream was very welcome after swallowing sushi rolls made of nothing but wasabi and peppers - OH - and some sriracha sauce on the top. Wow. The creme brulee helped settle our stomachs. Thank goodness! If you want sushi, by all means order the best roll - Godzilla! Just know it won't be on the menu. This is a mystery I can't solve. read more
