A great hotel upon my arrival in Australia. They were very accommodating and welcoming, and got our rooms ready quickly. The rooms were cozy and clean. Unfortunately, the water in our shower smelled pretty bad. However, the beds were comfortable and water was so kindly provided and available upon request. The hotel is located in a good location, making it accessible to walk down to the water or to uber to quickly and easily to other locations. The breakfast was the star of the show here, though. It truly had something for everyone and anything you could ever imagine. The Nutella and pancakes were the incredible! The upstairs restaurant and bar was delicious. Great location and good hotel in Sydney. Service was prompt and responsive. We arrived much earlier to Shangri-La due to red eye flight as we didn't expect to get a room. They registered us in and took my cell to notify me when the room would be available if it's earlier than the regular check-in time. Our luggage was promptly stored by the concierge. Soon after, we got a notification that the room was already available, much earlier than we expected. After getting our keys and going upstairs to check out our room, our luggage was already laying there. The hotel also has a decent size gym though I must say it's not the best I've been to. They do have a very nice indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi. The breakfast is pretty good and has a nice variety. The best part of the hotel though in my opinion is its proximity to a lot of attractions including just a 10 min walk to the harbor and Sydney Opera House. It's located in the Rock neighborhood so lots of restaurants to choose from. It's also only a 10 min walk to George street which is the one of the main shopping and walking streets in Sydney. My only negative feedback is that the hotel seems a bit dated to me and the furniture, bathroom, and carpets need an upgrade / remodel. read more

Gorgeous view of the opera house if you are lucky. Nice and luxurious hotel that's right in the heart of the city. We walked everywhere from here, including the bridge and opera house. Plenty of dining and shopping options nearby. Rooms were nicely appointed with comfortable bedding. Everything was modern. Designer soaps and lush towels. Spacious room. They even had cushions on the window ledge for us to enjoy the amazing views. Plenty of staff everywhere. Everyone was friendly and offered assistance. We had breakfast, and it was quite an impressive spread of pastries, bacon, eggs to order, Chinese porridge, and a proper barista who made a beautiful cappuccino. read more

Came to Sydney for my honeymoon and got a nice room with views of the Sydney Opera House. I booked through Amex FHR (fine hotels and resorts) and received a $100 credit that my wife used for a massage. Hotel itself was a little bit dated and the included breakfast was just average. You could order one hot entree and then they had several sides that you could eat. Best part of breakfast was the view of the opera house, but if you came too late in the morning there was often times a wait to get at the mediocre breakfast. This location is about 10-15 minutes away from the ferry/tram station which is convenient for getting to Manly Beach. read more

Overall, this was a great hotel, we really enjoyed our stay here. While it's not the most modern or updated, the rooms were nice and large, and the staff and service were great the entire time. There was always someone actively greeting guests at the door which made the hotel feel top notch (and you could always get help whenever needed). The highlight of this hotel is their breakfast buffet. Service was fantastic, and the selection was good. You also get to order an "entree" in addition to the other fruits, yogurts, charcuterie they have available. The juices and pastries were great, and the staff were fantastic! All the food we had was delicious and well executed. The best part of the buffet were the incredible views from the top of the hotel. The floor to ceiling windows were amazing, especially with the breathtaking Sydney Harbor views during the morning sunrise. The other great thing about this Shangri-La is its location. It's right at the heart of Circular Quay and very conveniently located to all the public transportation options (buses, ferries, trains, light rail). The two downsides we found were: 1. You need to go up a steep hill to get to the front of the hotel (the front entrance is at the top of the hill) 2. They still use individual bottles for lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash - we found this to be wasteful and wish they used the larger bottles found at nearly every hotel read more

This is a high end hotel that is close to the Sydney harbor Bridge and the Opera house. If would do not mind walking, it took me about 6.3 miles to walk from the hotel to Chinatown, the bridge, the opera house and some malls. They have a lot of staff member who greet you as you enter the building. They have a valet and bellman service. We stayed at the 34th floor. Different floors have different room sizes and different perks. The room that i syayed at has some amenities such as an ironing board, hair dryer and some little stuff such as a sewing kit, comb, razor, shaving cream, toothbrush and toothpaste, hair tie. I used to having a Bible in the nightstand not that I am religious but that's what I am accustomed to. However, my night stand has a flash light. I am not sure when will be a flash light be useful. Nonetheless, you have a flash light maybe you can use it at night if your lights are not working. Their light switches are buttons and not the typical light switch. Even their do not disturb method is a button. When you press the button then a red button switch outside your room will lit up indicating that you do not want to be disturbed. The room also has a mini bar. I do not think it is weighted. Some hotels have their bar items on a weight scale and when you life them up to pick them then you are charged. I actually lifted our small wine and didn't get charge. They have a small espresso machine in the room. I like the service of the staff member bringing us fresh fruits. I only ate the grapes which were delicious. They have a bar and restaurant on the 36th floor. The view from the bar was spectacular. Unfortunately you can not see the sunset because of a several tall buildings blocking the sunset. I am a morning person so I called the front desk regarding their breakfast at the Altitude restaurant on the 36th floor. It opens from 630am and breakfast is done by around 10ish. Hotel staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The hotel is perfectly located near The Rocks, ferry terminal, and CBD. Some parts of the hotel were worn down and in need of maintenance. Housekeeping was good but inconsistent. From day to day, we did not know if they would arrive in the morning, afternoon, or evening, and some days we would not have washcloths, toilet paper, etc. Our first week was with a group that rented event space. While admittedly a bit dated (thus the 4-star rating), the room we had was very nice; we even had a view of the harbor from our floor (I think we were on floor 10) although the higher up you go, the more spectacular the view gets. The bed was very comfortable and all the normal amenities you would expect from a 5-star hotel were present. Found the staff extremely helpful as well. The location is truly spectacular. If you are in town for a short or special occasion, I would definitely stay here again. I would give this hotel 6 stars if possible! From check in to checkout it was perfect. Friendly staff, very clean and unbelievably quiet. Not a single noise and I was street side. The views are amazing and the window seat allows you to sit and sip coffee watching the ships come in. The drapes are perfectly engineered to completely close allowing for international travelers a dark space to recharge. It is very conveniently located for walking and shopping. I stayed here twice recently (first room was #1510 with perfect views of the Sydney Bridge and Sydney Opera House and second room was #2616 with a view of the Sydney Opera House & city view). Check in was quick & easy upon my first arrival but rooms weren't quite ready during my second visit so I rested in their comfortable lobby sofas. During my second stay, I was gifted a chilled bottle of champagne & fresh, whole fruit in my room when it was ready. What a lovely, thoughtful gesture! Thank you Shangri-La hotel staff! The hotel is a very convenient location in The Rocks area, about a 15 to 20 minute walk to the Sydney Opera House, 10 to 15 minute walk to the ferry terminal. The rooms are very clean, bathrooms are spacious with spa tub separate from shower stall and feature L'Occitane bath products (which I love). The beds are very comfortable. I love how the large windows feature a large, cushioned sitting ledge so you can comfortably admire the view of the Sydney Opera House, ferry terminal and watch the cruise ships come & go. This location was particularly convenient as we went on a cruise which left from the dock that was relatively close. I didn't have a chance to visit Altitude, their top level bar, but had breakfast and dinner at The Mix, which was ok. We did a bit of souvenir shopping at the Gifts at The Quay shop which is about 5 blocks away (down a steep hill). It's about a 20 minute brisk walk to the Westfield Mall, if you're interested in shopping. Roads around this area are steep so be mindful when walking around. read more

This is definitely not a 5 star hotel. Furniture and fittings are chipped, aged timber and very out of date. The restaurant on 36 has stunning views and the food and service was fine. Our lunch booking was for general ala carte dining but they had us down for a high tea and there was quite a bit of discussion amongst staff as to whether we could be assigned a table in a different area, designated only for ala carte - they had to check with the chef. All this, despite there being many empty tables available. Very weird seeing a room full of only high tea tier stands! My lunch cost $150 - shared bottle of the cheapest wine ($45) and a 2-course menu. If you are used to a genuine 5 star venue, you will be disappointed This hotel needs to be downgraded to a 4 star. read more

I made a plan to visit Sydney few months ago to celebrate New Year's Eve. As I always do , I asked American Express Platinum travel service to arrange a package. I have been all over the world, and American Express always do a great job and usually agree with their suggestions except this one unfortunately. When They shared the name of the hotel, was not impressed but I took their advice on the condition that they will give me partial Harbor Bridge view and upgrade if available. Well I first arrived at the 21st of December for a few days, they gave me an ok view and checked out on the 23rd to go to Melbourne. When I came back on the 27th, they gave me the worst view, windows dirty', tv doesn't work, and lots of freeway noise. I went downstairs and shared my concern and told them I was not happy with the room and nobody cared. I called American Express and shared my concern to see if they can help. The American Express customer service got a ran around and they said they couldn't do anything, I asked the American Express Lady to get me out of the hotel and find me another hotel, they refused to refund me so I got stuck in this ugly situation. They first said it will cost me additional Eight Thousand Australian dollars, kind of laughed at them, then one of the managers said if I can pay additional 2100 Australian dollars, she will upgrade me to the 6th floor which I didn't like . At this point I just said I am not going to allow these people to rub my joy from celebrating the new year. I am very un happy with this hotel and will never come back and will tell people to stay away from this Shangri-La. I say to people who are planning to come to Sydney, be aware of all the drama that you will experience in Shangri-La hotel. By the way, I paid close to 8000 Australian Dollars for for 8 days, I should have gotten better treatment for this kind of money. I have never written a bad review on any other hotel in my life before, there was no need, stayed at Ritz Paris, Four Season , Ritz Carlton , lots of 5 star hotel, I have always been treated well, except this bad experience. . Yes, this hotel and all Shangri-La's have this signature smell that is what I imagine heaven to smell like. This is just the 1st clue that this hotel is CLEAN and you're in for more than just your average hotel. Shangri-La hotels are the benchmark for higher end hotels, and the Sydney location doesn't fall short of that expectation. The level of service here is top notch. The bell boys brought our luggage to our rooms with no problem in a timely manner. Checking in was a breeze, and they even had complimentary afternoon tea or coffee available for a welcoming pick me up. If you arrive before normal check in time, they will safely hold onto your bags for you until your room is ready, and your room will have priority cleaning status. The view from our hotel room was spectacular. You can clearly see the harbor, bridge, cruise ship port, and Sydney Opera House in the distance. This view is especially nice at sunrise, sunset, or at night when all the city lights are on. But this hotel really shines because of all the little details they put in your stay to make you feel welcome and at home. I love the complimentary shoe shine service, music/speakers in the bathroom that is connected to whatever you're watching on TV, your name in the welcome message that displays on your TV when you first arrive, mini fridge, safe deposit box, robes, slippers, toiletries, clothes hanging line, gym, heated pool, rooftop/penthouse bar, breakfast buffet, Anne Polyvou dessert shop in the lobby, etc. The amenities are endless at this hotel! They even surprised my Mom for her birthday when we were staying here with a mini chocolate cake, good quality chocolate truffles, and a nice bottle of champagne to celebrate. I literally can't stress enough how enjoyable our stay was at this hotel in Sydney! With its close proximity to many restaurants, bars, and things to do, it was the perfect end to our vacation after we got off the Norwegian cruise before flying back home to Texas, USA. Service above and beyond the call of duty, but I would expect nothing less from the Shangri-La. Tip: If you want more space in your room, book this hotel instead of the Four Seasons. They are on parallel streets and around the same price, but the Four Seasons' rooms are usually 200 something square feet and that's all. I had wanted to stay at one of their locations forever since there aren't any of them located in the US. Here are my individual ratings: Service - 5 stars - such hospitality it's amazing. To name a few things, the bell man walked us out of the hotel to find a convenient store, the maid organized my toiletries and placed them on a dry towel everyday, and turn down service was always on time. I never saw a maid's cart hanging out in the hallway. The hotel functions like clockwork. Amenities 3.5 stars - the pool was closed for a few days when we got there. Also the property is smaller than what I would have expected. There is no grand lobby or gardens with raging fountains. Wifi is also free and fast! Accommodations - 5 stars - we were upgraded to a corner suite with a gorgeous opera house view. We entered to a nice, little living room space, but turned to find a LONG hallway down to where the actual bed was. So much space. If we had children, it would have provided a nice separation for us and the kids. Shower pressure was perfect! Heavenly bathroom. Location - 4 stars - The hotel is located very close to Circular Quay and Sydney Opera house. Only takes you 10 - 15 minutes to walk there, but it is located on a smaller street that is on a slight hill so tour buses might have trouble getting there. Walking back to the hotel might be a little tiring because you will be walking uphill for two blocks. You stay at this hotel if you want impeccable service and luxury. I loved my stay here at Shangri-La! The view of the harbor is amazing, and the service all throughout was great. The bed was super comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and clean, and the breakfast was quite yummy! The gym was pretty well equipped, the pool looked nice, and there were free bottles of water in the rooms! The location is great! Only a 10-15 minute walk to get to Circular Quay! The Rocks neighborhood that the hotel is located in offers some great, historical buildings and ruins, as well as some nice spots to grab some food or drinks! (highly recommend the bar on top of Glenmore Hotel!!) The only issue was, when we were there, only 2 of the 6 elevators were working. This made coming down from the 21st floor a nightmare. Reception: Nice ambiance & Staff. The entrance is very Grand & impressive. This is my first time staying at this chain & I'm not disappointed. The concierges desk is right next to reception desk & they were very helpful during our stay. Lobby: Recpetion desk & Concierge's desk as mentioned. There's also a restaurant on this level that we didn't use. Around the corner from the reception desk there's a lounge & a small computer desk with a printer, I printed my cruise ship stuff after we had a change in rooms. The printer prints in color too Breakfast: My room, booked via Expedia, came with breakfast. This area is located on the 1st floor, not to be confused with the reception area located on the ground floor. The breakfast area was nice & plentiful. Once seated you could choose from 4-5 hot items prepared to order & then proceed to the buffer area for more options. And I mean OPTIONS! I promise you won't go hungry. Over my stay I sampled: the made to order omelet , bacon (limp, not cooked all the way through), chicken sausage , fruit, waffles & dim som. Blu: located on the top floor, 36. This bar area offered great views of the city. While I didn't partake in any drinks, they let you look around aka snap some photos of the skyline. Arrive super early or make reservations if you want to sit up there & chat/drink, if you want some good seats. Rooms: NICE! Updated, modern & big rooms. Request a higher floor if you opt for the Harbour views. We are located on the 4th floor & barely can see Sydney Opera House. The room has a fridge, safe & pricy snacks. ($8 bottle of water ). The bathroom is huge, nice soaking tub & glass shower. I LOVED the blackout curtains, good quality. Location: We stayed here before our Celebrity Cruise & while it's in walking distance to the port, it's some STEEP hills. Well, it's all downhill to the Cruise Port so if you don't have lots of luggage, it's doable to walk there. We opted for a taxi & it cost $10.80. Negatives: The lifts/elevators are SLOW! We once waited 20min to go up to the 36th floor. They said all 6 of them were working but I'm not sure I believed them. We were only on the 4th floor & we willing to take the stairs up from the lobby; nope, we couldn't find any. Crazy! read more

I get it. I'm a hotel snob. I travel all over the world and know what a world class hotel is supposed to deliver. So when I am paying top end prices and don't get top end service, it makes me a little nuts. This should be a 5 star review. After all, the Shangri-La hotel has a great location in the Rocks, all the amenities a hotel of this caliber should have including a top level bar and restaurant that overlooks the beautiful Sydney Harbor, friendly staff and large rooms and bathrooms. But while there were a couple of notables that I'll call out, my overall experience left me a little flat. I was here for four nights. On two of the days, my room never got cleaned. Once because they thought the door was bolted from inside( it wasn't, the lock needed a new battery which was another hassle to get replaced) and the 2nd time the housekeeper thought the privacy sign was lit ( it wasn't). And when I called and asked to get it fixed, they didn't come when I asked them to ( which was when I was going to be out of the room) And then there was the day the Internet didn't work, and when I called, they transferred me to a tech help desk and then charged me on my bill for the service! They did later remove it when I complained but, come on! They also charged my bill for the mini bar for the people before me in the room. I also had to have the hot water fixed while I was there as it only ran out at a trickle. I felt like I was constantly calling to get something rectified. These are all things you don't expect from a hotel of this caliber. It was disappointing to say the least. But there were some high points. The views to the harbor are amazing. The bed is comfortable, there is free internet and coffee in the room. And the shower? I could have stood in there all morning. In my room rate, breakfast was included and this breakfast has pretty much any food you can think of. A couple of individuals also made my stay that much better. Colin, the concierge was terrific! Super helpful on even the busiest of days. And I loved that he always greeted me whenever he saw me like I was a valued guest. The same with the bellman, Nick. He helped me out on the first day when my room wasn't ready and always welcomed me back to the hotel when I walked past his stand. There are lots of hotel choices when I travel. I was so looking forward to staying here as I had heard great things about the hotel. But on this visit, the hassles were many and really marred the experience. And while none of the issues were insurmountable, high end hotels are really meant to be hassle free. And the really good ones know how to make your visit just that . . . . Hassle free. read more

Before we even arrived I was impressed with the level of service. I had emailed the Sydney Shangri-La a week before our arrival asking if there would be a place to store our luggage until check-in time as we would be arriving very early in the day. I received a very nice response stating that luggage could be kept at the bell desk and they would mark our early arrival and request an early check-in. If our room wasn't available yet we were offered the use of the Health Club to freshen up. We arrived a little after 7 a.m. and a room was available. The services available for Horizon Club stays was explained and we were invited to view the Horizon Club lounge. Our room was very nice, the amenities very good too. We had a Opera House/City view room on the 31st floor. The elevators were never a problem. One seemed to be available within seconds of pressing the button and it moved very quickly from 31 to the ground floor. We were blown away by the Horizon Club breakfasts, afternoon tea, and evening drinks. Francis in the Horizon Club lounge at breakfast was especially helpful. read more

Although I have stayed in 4 and 5 star properties for work, this was the first time I sprung for it due to the the awesome exchange rate between the USD and AUD, like every hotel was 30% off. This was the first Shangri-La that I have stayed in and they get it. Service, Service, Service. Walking into the hotel you are politely greeted either from the bell-men who take care of everything when pulling up with your car or taxi from the valet service ($55 per day) and the storage of your luggage while you are checking in. Tipping is not mandatory in Australia, but if you think the bellman has gone out of his way slip him a fiver. The front desk staff was very cordial and professional as well. Even though I checked in with someone who was training, the front desk manager stepped in when the trainee was fumbling. Check in was painless and they address you formally. moments after we arrived to our room our bags followed. Thinking that we might not be back in Sydney for awhile I decided to book a opera house view room. The room had a decent vew of the Opera house but who knows when they cleaned the outside windows the last time. I think the Opera House view room was some scheme from the hotel sales department to book more city view rooms, but definitely not worth the premium paid, so you are better shelling out the extra for the Harbor view rooms. Luckily rooms were a nice size compared to similarly prices 4 and 5 star hotels in Manhattan and San Francisco. The bathrooms have a separate tub and shower. Watch out though, the marble floors can get slippery so wear the complimentary slippers in the closet. The beds are memory foam but seem to be a two piece mattress so the the middle of the bed is harder. They have a turn down service, which only came by the first night we were there. Go the the ALTITUDE Restaurant for FINE dining! Reserve the private room, it is so intimate, and absolutely LOVELY! You are in your own glass room, with amazing views of the entire city. You see the gorgeous lit bridge as well as the Opera House. I was more into who I was with and the gorgeous view, the food came second. Although the dishes were very different from the average menu, the food was VERY good! Being in the private dining, we went all the way and did the Four Course meal...HOLY MOLY! I had to note in my phone all the goodies as listed from the menu. My boyfriend organised a night here for my 29th birthday on the 33rd floor. It is the nicest place I have ever stayed at! I felt like a queen for the day! The staff here are incredible, everyone is friendly and accommodating and nothing is too much. Our room was immaculate and our view of the Sydney Opera House was to die for. I felt so incredibly spoiled, it really was like being in heaven! The hotel surprised me with a little slice of cake as it was my birthday, which was a very nice surprise :) We had access to the 30th floor lounge which was such a treat. I had never experienced such a place! The views of the harbour and Sydney Harbour Bridge were breathtaking and we got to enjoy afternoon tea here as well as a full buffet breakfast the next day. I didn't want to leave this place and actually got a little upset when we had to check out the next day, lol. I guess I will have to win the lottery if I want to stay here forever, haha! Not much to say about this iconic hotel that hasn't already been stated. The service, the room, the views, the location, the amenities, the bars, the food, all worthy of your dollars for those of you who prefer an historic, luxe hotel option when you travel. Walk score is a gold star 10. I loved the classy welcome and ongoing, personalized service, including arranging the incredible Handa Opera tickets (holy cow, can you say 50 yard line seats in VIP box). The one heads up I'd give you is beware of slow elevators. I hated the waits, so my advice is zen yourself, remember you're on vacation and just don't be careless in leaving, say, your rain jacket or SPF in the room, causing you to make multiple trips. LOCATION: Perfect! So convenient to all the local must-see attractions. Located at The Rocks puts this Shang up in a grand pedestal. Beautiful neighborhood. My room was a gem and well kept daily. LOBBY- none eventful. The two or three doormen seem to be always just chatting away and not really engaged in welcoming the guests. I definitely do not remember any of their names or faces. Front desk and lobby bar just seems so cramped and uninviting. HOTEL RESTAURANTS - unfortunately, I did not try any of them during my stay except for the Horizon Lounge. This Shang is surrounded by many local favorites. HORIZON CLUB- this is the lounge that makes you really feel at home and relaxed. It's not the view of the Opera House from the lounge, nor was it because of the brilliant set up ( with a community bar in the middle of the food display)... it was the STAFF that made this horizon lounge stand superior from the other Horizon Lounges that I have been. Probably the most functional reception desk that goes beyond the front desk services... as a diamond member, I felt special. I stayed at the Shangri-La in Sydney at The Rocks in August 2016 and this review has been long overdue!!!!!!!! My apologies. Thank you Isabel from Costa Rica who was always very friendly and accommodating. Isabel anticipates your needs before you even know it. Thank you Rosdee from Thailand for always being engaged and personal with the guests. I definitely felt welcomed whenever Rosdee is around. Very social and helpful with local recommendations. He's great at connecting people at the lounge. Special thanks to Zen (Filipino), Charlton (Chinese), and the very friendly Japanese lady at the front desk who sometimes work the lounge ( sorry, I forget her name). You have all made my stay memorable and Sydney one of my favorite cities! Wishlist: 1. Improve your smoking areas. Maybe add a bench in a small garden tucked away from the main areas. Right now? You either have smokers in the back or in the front corner...one ashtray, standing room only. By the way, rats frequent the back smoking area. 2. Have more attentive doormen. I would recommend you stay here, but you cannot sleep past 6am. And if you decide to leave your room you spend an hr in the space of 3 days just waiting to get into packed, sweaty elevators that stop on every floor because there are so many people waiting for them and so few in service. From having Uber's wait 10 min to missing meetings because I was stuck on the 21st floor for 15 min - this is not a hotel you can do business from. It seems I will have to go back to the Langham, which is a little more expensive but I get to sleep past 6am and don't miss or get delayed for any of my meetings. Sorry. read more

The BF always stays at the Shangri-La in Asia for work, so if they have a property at our vacation destination, that's where we stay. We stayed for 6 night in a grand harbour (GH) view room, then 3 nights in a darling harbour (DH) view room. Rooms - In a nutshell, based on this stay, our GH room was smaller but nicer with an amazing view. Our DH room was bigger but more rundown/dingy. The DH room was actually a bit bigger (had a full sized desk in addition to a vanity) than the GH room (just the vanity). The GH room was also in better condition and looks more well maintained. The bathroom in the DH was definitely showing the amount of use and abuse it gets. There were stained cracks in the tub and the shower tiles looked old. And the room itself actually smelled like cigarette smoke. When we called about the smell, they just sent someone up to walk through the room and spray air freshener. Didn't work at all, but I guess they tried? Service - Service overall was good. All the staff we encountered were nice and they're pretty quick at responding to any requests we had. The showerhead broke the first day we were there and they changed it within a few hours. I think it's pretty on par with high-end hotels in large cities. The BF thought it was just ok compared to other Shangri-La locations he stays at (in Asia). His expectations were definitely higher since he assumed their service would be similar regardless of location. Food - We had free breakfast included with our stay both times, so we were pretty much at the buffet every morning. The staff working there were quick and efficient, but some were definitely better than others. They have a good variety at the buffet...fruits, cereals, Asian breakfast items (dim sum, porridge, rice noodles) and western (eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, sausage, pastries, etc). They also have items to order like pancakes and omelets. The selection is pretty much the same everyday, with one or two items changing. Location - I love the location. Super close to the trains, ferries, and buses. And you're also close to great restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. I also liked that it was off on a side street, so it's not crazy when you step out of the hotel everyday. Overall, we'll stay here again when we're back in Sydney. read more

"You've been upgraded to the Presidential Suite." Sweet words... First, the disclaimer: 1. I do not usually stay in Presidential Suites (170 sq m). As such I am reviewing a Presidential Suite experience from the point of view of someone that stays in more normal sized accommodation (50 sq m). 2. Someone else paid the bill in the first place, and the upgrade was free. I am naturally very thankful to the Shangri-La for doing this (so thankful that here I am at 11pm writing this review and selecting which photos to upload). This might bias my review. Let's get started. What is a Presidential Suite? In this case, two corridors including a closet, toilet and kitchen, a walk in wardrobe, a couple of sofas, a conference table with 8 chairs, a large bedroom, an ensuite bathroom with jacuzzi, double shower and separate toilet "room", and wraparound windows with the best view over Sydney I have ever seen, around 180 degrees from any single spot and perhaps 270 degrees if you count sitting at the corner and looking back towards the city. That's the technical part done. The view is easily the best feature. You get the Bridge, the Opera House, the wharves... but also North Sydney, some of the stuff West of the Bridge, and an unobstructed view all the way to the Heads and including most of the Eastern Suburbs above Bondi. The windows are clean and clear (yes, this needs to be said; it's not always the case even in famous establishments). The effect is one of peace and awe, particularly when coupled with the sheer... scale of the apartment. With windows on half the walls, light is clearly exceptional. Some say that the Park Hyatt is the "best" hotel in Sydney. I'd counter that no room however nice can provide, at the water level, with the noise and limited view of ferries, the same sense of awe and peace that the higher floors of the Shangri-La come with. Horizon Club membership was included: "Evening drinks and snacks" was pretty basic, similar to a Priority Pass Lounge at most airports - some noodles fried two (very similar) ways, a few overcooked meat sticks, a cheese platter. "Light buffet breakfast" was much better, and the first "light" breakfast I've been to that includes sausages, bacon, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I asked where the baked beans were, and they brought some to my table in a bowl. It wasn't actually offered, so clearly they saw it as a good idea to simply go and execute a guest's off-menu wish, taking my query of "do you have it" as a request. If this is the complimentary "light" breakfast, what on earth do they serve at the proper, paid-for one? A special note was paid to the mini apple turnovers, which were really, really well made. I may have taken a few away. The flat white was good enough, as often is the case in Sydney. It would be exceptional for Paris. I cancelled my plans to pay Mecca Circular Quay a visit. Afternoon tea almost one-upped the breakfast. Tea was served in a plunger pot, brought to your table after you indicate your choice of leaf (in bone china pots, naturally). We were stuffed after lunch at Bennelong, but still managed a mini lemon tart (excellent, so I somehow had a second and third) and some macaroons. Scones are also offered. We were sad to have to leave for late checkout at 4pm, which is possible right there and then at the Horizon Club, so you don't have to queue in the lobby. Brilliant. Acqua di Parma toiletries in the bathroom. The jacuzzi filled fast. If I was to nitpick, it seems that there is some internal IT-related inconsistency. Reception and the service centre seem to be separate and this caused some confusion as to the time of late checkout. The person paying for our room was called asking why we hadn't checked out yet... but really, this is something I expect in most big corporates, where IT is generally very hard to do well, so I'm not holding it against them and the customer contact was always perfect. A point not often discussed: the bane of living on a higher floor is that at popular times, the lift can turn into a metro line as it stops on literally a dozen floors on the way to the ground. I used to live on the 40th floor and would routinely schedule my commute outside rush hour just to save the 10 minutes I knew would be wasted if I made the mistake of going at, say, 8.30am. Somehow, the Shangri-La lifts are either sufficient for the demand, or prioritize Horizon Club floors. We never stopped at more than 4 floors. I had a look at a 5th floor twin room thanks to my friend staying there. It looked spacious enough, a scaled down but not levelled down version of what we had. Finally, the location is more convenient than it looks, with stairs to Circular Quay via the Rocks that we used twice with no issues. Will I return to this Shangri-La? Well, my in-laws are Sydney-siders, so probably not. Maybe the bar, to remember the view. Maybe even a suite for our anniversaries. But I definitely recommend it. read more
