We signed up for the BYOB Friday Night ceramics class and had the absolute pleasure of learning from Melissa--who made the whole experience even better. The class was the perfect mix of fun, creativity, and calm. Whether you've touched clay before or not, Melissa made us feel at ease and totally capable. She gave just the right amount of guidance without hovering, letting us explore and enjoy the process. The space itself is welcoming and unpretentious, with good energy and a cozy vibe that made it easy to relax. Having the option to bring our own drinks didn't hurt either--made it feel like a laid back date night. I've been doing pottery since 2019, and Shape Theory is the third studio I've been a part of and the second studio I have been a member at due to moving around. All three are quite different from each other and Shape Theory is my favorite studio so far by far. I'd just moved to SD last year and was looking for a studio that fired to cone 6 and was open to production pottery in some form. Going into my search, I knew the pottery scene could differ by city, but it was a bit of a shock to see that most SD studios had some combination of - impossible hours for someone working a 9-5 and/or - membership fees that were 2-3 times the price of my old LA studio membership (that had 24/7 access) and/or - only allowed 12 hours a month that needed to be booked in 90 minute sessions or 24 hours booked in 3 hour sessions, or sold 5 session packs that needed to be purchased ahead of time and/or - had hefty hiring fees or limited clay options Shape Theory stood out because they provide unlimited reclaim clay but allow outside clays, have unlimited studio access, and firing is included in the membership fee. They also fire outside work for a fee, which I figured would be perfect if I wanted to get my own wheel at home and transition from a full time membership to just relying on their firing service. I reached out, explaining my pottery experience and what I was looking for, received a tour of the studio and decided that that was my studio on the spot. The owners, Jess and Melissa have been ceramic artists/working in the pottery industry for over 10 years and it shows in the way that the studio is set up. In addition to the typical slab roller, extruder, and basic throwing/trimming tools, they share all the extra tools that they've accumulated over the years from their own personal projects like cookie cutters, stamps, sanding disks, books/magazines, heat guns, and even a Giffin grip. Since they renovated the space themselves, they even custom cut seasonal shapes for the press plate workshops/happy hours that they regularly host. They also have some custom laser cut dies for the extruder. Jess and Melissa's ultimate goal is to foster a community of like minded folks centered around art (and given their past experiences, not just ceramics but also potentially jewelry making and other crafts/skills down the line), which is something I have been looking for. Since the studio is new, it is on the smaller side, but it's growing and I appreciate them actively asking for suggestions and being receptive to feedback. They have plans to have guest lectures based on member interests (mold making and slip casting, luster, etc), create a discord channel or some kind of platform for members to communicate, make a backdrop/photography area for folks to take pictures of their creations, and transition to a 24/7 access studio if possible. And since I asked, they're also open to teach about the firing aspects of pottery and other more technical aspects as well. Jess and I have also talked about how so many crafts intersect and have dreamt of getting the studio a laser cutter and 3d printer though this may sadly remain a pipe dream. Beyond the physical space, the studio's most valuable resources for an intermediate ceramic artist like me has been Jess and Melissa's fountain of knowledge and excitement to share it. Melissa, who used to work at Freeform Clay & Supplies in National City, is the expert when it comes to knowing what clay to use for what kind of project and how they might interact with each other or with certain glazes. Jess is my go-to when I have technical questions, have a new project idea that I need help fleshing out or troubleshooting, or just want someone to validate my ideas or work lol. Jess also kindly agreed to walk me through making my own plaster slabs for making a damp box and for reclaiming clay, and allowed me to use the studio plaster powder since they had extra! Jess and Melissa are always in the studio themselves and are always open to questions, so I've definitely made more progress in refining my style and improving my quality of work in the last 7 months at this studio than I have in the last 5 years on my own. Note - Unhoused folks sometime walk through the immediate neighborhood. They've been polite and there haven't been any incidents or safety concerns, but just be alert when leaving the studio at night. - Terra Bella Nursery/Cafe is down the street in case you love coffee or plants as well - Because their membership is still growing, the firing schedule can sometimes be a bit slow or inconsistent. However, since Jess and Melissa are usually working on personal projects or since there are often firings for outside work, they have been very flexible about squeezing my pieces in if I'm on a deadline - They regularly throw different kinds of workshops (usually byob) like press plate making, partner wheel throwing for date night, hand building, and even wreath making around the holidays! read more
