A few weeks ago, a friend and I took our first class the The Artist Outpost. It is a small art studio in Ocean Beach that is in the same parking lot as Voltaire Beach House. The class we took was candle making. The class included three candles with different colors, scents and decoration. We also had a little time while the candles were setting to decorate the lids with paint pens. There had been several cancellations for our class, as well as people who showed up late. As a result, we ended up with a semi-private class, which was nice in order to be able to ask lots of questions. When we arrived, we walked around to see a lot of the projects in the studio, several from kids classes, and some from adult classes. We also stopped at the Voltaire Beach House for a bottle of mimosas for the class. It understand that you can have servers from the Beach House bring appetizers to you in the class. At the end of the class, we ended out with three candles, two which I made for gifts, and the third, I have been enjoying burning at home.

Located in Pacific Beach, Last night we came to the pottery and macrame night. These are held outdoors and limited to around 8 people. All I can say is, it was soooooo fun! We were there from 6-9pm. I finished my macrame and will pick up the fired pottery in 2 weeks.

My 8 year old Loves Artist outpost camps. He attended last summer and had a blast. The teachers are great with the kids. They have 1/2 day programs and full day. I just saw they have winter camps too. We were amazed by quality of the items our kiddo made. A really beautiful bowl and cup. And a bunch of other cool projects. The price is right for the time and all the art created.

I've been taking my two toddler boys the Toddler Time workshops at the Artist Outpost for about 4 months now and my boys love it! The instructor Dean is wonderful with the little ones and puts together fun art projects that keep them excited and engaged. So happy I found this place!

I've taken 2 courses here with Zach- acrylic and water color. The classes are about 2 hours long but they may run a little longer or shorter sometimes. It's very relaxing and a fun, and you will end meeting some cool people. The instructors are educated, helpful, and not judgmental, it's a chill environment with music playing and people chatting. All of the supplies are included with the cost of the class, which is nice, and there is nothing to set up or clean up- just show up! There is an accepting vibe with all levels of talent. You can bring food and drinks or order from the bar/restaurant next door. It's so much fun that I never want to leave and I look forward to class each week. Come a few minutes early to find parking, although there is a lot and green and yellow spots are open after 6.

I can not say enough about how much I have loved my experience with the Artist Outpost. I came in with no pottery knowledge and felt right at home. I am now starting my 3rd series of classes. Everyone is so warm and encouraging and it has the perfect small studio feel for a new potter/artist. Their events are doing so much to encourage the Voltaire art scene and I can't wait to see this studio grow!

We were never bumped, but sometimes kids would run by on their way to get paint. My only other complaint (which is more so my fault) was that we sat at stools at a shorter table so I was hunched over for a while. I'm just old. The staff was really friendly, and I like that there's a BYOB policy. I would probably suggest going later in the evening to avoid all the birthday parties as it was pretty quiet when we came to pick up our piece near closing.

We took a class at a pottery place in Laguna Beach last year so we wanted to give it a try again because it was pretty fun! We did the one time class pottery wheel try it class. It was $80 per person. Which is on the pricier side, compared to the other class we took last time. I will say this class was more informative than our last class. Our instructor taught us how to start working with our clay, demonstrated how to do it, worked with us, helped us out, showed us different techniques and steps on how to form our pottery. It's was definitely more challenging this time around because I think we didn't have to do as much in our last class we did. My boyfriend said he didn't like the pace of the class and having to work with a whole class. Our last class had less people so it was more intimate and slower, as for this class it was a little bit more of a faster pace. In the end we made 2 pieces. First one was like a practice piece and the second one was when you kind of got the hang of it and the final product looked better. We were only able to take one piece home. Our instructor said she typically does 2 pieces because she teaches faster but we are only able to take one. Honestly, I didn't like my first one too much so I was okay with that but I know some other people in the class wanted to take both. After you are done you have to clean up everything and put everything away. Then you chose the color glaze you want from a choice of 4 or 5. They glaze it for you then they tell you when it's ready for pick up. We are not from SD but it's an excuse to come back down to pick up our pottery.

Our class was on a really nice day, and for a super reasonable price, we got 1.5 hours on the wheel, which felt like the perfect amount of time. The wheel throwing class is either indoors (behind the plant shop) or in the back (half exposed garage). We were in the back and it was a good amount of space for our group of 4 people. There were more couples next to us as well. Also, I loved that they allow you to bring outside drinks to enjoy while creating, making it a fun and relaxed experience. This turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly fun, and messy kind of nights we've had in a long time. Our instructor Josh was fantastic: super thorough with step-by-step guidance while sprinkling in just the right amount of sarcastic humor to keep things light when our clay creations started looking... questionable He made total beginners feel comfortable getting our hands dirty (literally) and embracing the chaos. So pottery is WAY harder than it looks. My husband and I quickly realized we probably won't be quitting our day jobs to become ceramic artists anytime soon But we had an absolute blast trying, filming our wobbly moments, and competing with other couples to see who comes out with the best pieces (we lost proudly). I've thrown on a wheel in the past but this was a great opportunity to refresh those days! Parking was a little difficult, there is a paid parking lot, but luckily I was able to find street parking. Very clear demo and explanations, with a small class size (I think there was 8 of us). Our instructor Cristina does the demo first and then we try it and she is there to help us if needed. Once you finish your projects you can engrave designs into your pieces so I drew a little cat face on the bottom of the bowl. Unfortunately bc it was on the bottom of the bowl where the glaze pools, it was basically hidden by the glaze :( I wish I had known beforehand, then I would've chosen a better placement for the face. If you tilt it in the right lighting you can see the cat, but it's a beautiful bowl regardless! I like that they take care of everything else after you make the pieces, they trim, glaze, and fire it for you and you just have to be patient and wait for that email to come through that your piece is ready for pick up (4-6 weeks). From the class (3/7) to getting the bowl in my hands (4/10) took a month and a few days, due to the many pieces they have to fire. They have specific days and times for piece pick-up which they list on their email. ---- Overall: a great time for beginners or people with past experience, I'm happy with my piece and it reignited a dormant passion!
