I found my hair stylist, Megan Moden, at Shapes. Megan is a true artist. I am 59, and have colored, curly/wavy hair. Megan could probably take prefect care of my hair blind-folded! She cuts my hair dry, colors it fantastically, washes it and cuts it again carefully and precisely, and is extremely time-efficient in doing so. She is the best hair stylist I have ever had. She listens, she's friendly and approachable, and she is a technical wizard. I was searching for a pro specializing in curly hair. I had been to several stylists who were able to cut curly hair, but I still struggled with my hairstyle. Not anymore, and I am SO grateful! Prices at Shapes are VERY reasonable; other staff members there are also so friendly and helpful. I feel appreciated and well cared every time I leave Shapes with a great hairstyle, color and cut (which is all the time). When my father died suddenly in Seattle, and I needed a great cut and color before I left town, Shapes' staff got me in the salon in time, definitely looking my best for the ordeal ahead. Had a really bad experience booking the appt., the young man on the phone asked me right off if i had curly hair. kept trying to push me into the more expensive curly cut, despite the fact that I clearly told him I liked to wear it curly and straight...he tried to push me on a 'percentage' of how i wore it...who cares? I want to wear it both ways...and have gotten cuts for years that work both ways well, can't I just get a regular haircut that works for me, the way I want to wear it? he reluctantly booked me. argumentative appointment maker - strike one. then he quoted me prices higher than what was listed in the 'services' section of their website...and when i mentioned that there was a special there for new clients, he said i should print it out and bring it in with me...what? it's on YOUR site...try looking at it sometime! regardless of the 'arguing' i had to do to book, i made an appt. for the next day (probably a sign that they had an opening that soon). one hour later, another person from the salon called to 'remind' me of the appt. I JUST MADE. okay, but 15 mins. later the salon called again and asked for someone by another name...then sounded disbelieving when i told her there was no one here by that name. un-informed appointment maker, confusion and lack of attention to detail - strike two. then i read the reviews here, including mentions of a curly-haired girls worst nightmares: mullet, upside-down triangle, bi-level layers, straggly layers in thin/fine hair. no thanks. I was torn between 2 and 3 stars for Shapes. I've been in on 3 different occasions and it has been inconsistent, sometimes good other times not so much. First off it's unfortunate how unfriendly, rude, and arrogant the owner, Richelle, is. She makes for an uncomfortable experience even when she is just present in the salon, so I would never book a cut with her. Conversely, Jeanna is great, I would recommend her as she is friendly, easy going, and does a good job cutting curly hair. The pricing is pretty steep here and for me hasn't been consistent. The first time I got a Deva cut and color it was around $140. The next time, I got done with my cut and got a bill for almost $200! Dealing with Richelle in a customer service situation was just as dreadful, it was very so easy to tell she was not genuine when she pretended to care about my situation. It also took 3 months for her to my multiple phone calls. That experience made me begin looking for a new salon. read more

Just went to Megan again after being lazy and not going for a year and a half! My hair was almost a blank slate and she once again worked a miracle. When you have really thick curly hair it has a tendency to dread and it takes forever to comb out in the mornings. Thankfully Megan knows what length is flattering on me and she hooked me up! I have been getting my hair cut and colored by Jessica at Shapes for a year and a half, every time I go my hair gets better and better! I have never been happier with my hair. I have naturally curly hair but I have always worn it straight. Not only has Jessica given me the straight haircut with the body and color I have always wanted, but she also taught me how to embrace my curls and feel confident wearing my hair curly. Jessica is THE ONLY person I want blowing out my hair, she does such a good job and really pays attention to every detail. She has a great eye for details when working with curls, as well. She has always paid attention to exactly what I want in terms of length and cut. I trust her completely with my hair. Thanks to her my hair is my favorite thing about my appearance! I've always been loyal to Rochelle's cut and color for My curls, and recently have started getting the Brazilian blowout. It's brilliant! It keeps the curl that makes us curly girls unique, while taking away the frizz and difficult To manage part. What's left is a loose curl I love with way less product, time and frizz. I highly. After reading the article in the Denver Post I had been wanting to try Shapes. I've been going to a stylist I love for 20 years but she does not specialize in curls...and I'm a curly girl. So on an impulsive whim after New Year's I decided to call and see if anyone could take me on that day. It was a quiet day in the salon and Shannon was available at a convenient time for me. Upon greeting Shannon I was first happy she had curly hair. During our initial consultation she was very respectful of the plan I was working on with my previous stylist. I had started the transition of going gray, and she reinforced that we were on a good plan. She did a nice job with the color, adding some warmer highlights to soften the transition. I'm very happy with the color. Then she showed me the deva technique, which I'm now doing at home and getting nice results. For the cut, I wanted to go shorter, to shoulder length. My hair was way to long for the transitional process to gray. She gave me a shoulder length, long layered, cut...exactly what I asked for! It's been a long time since my hair was even this short, but it did not feel like a huge change, feels more natural. I wanted to wait a couple of days, but now have made a return appt with Shannon. read more

I've been going to Richelle for the past 15 years and I wouldn't trust my hair to anyone else! I have LOTS of very thick hair which has some curl/wave in it - which gives it a frizzy mind of it's own! This is the single best haircut I've ever had in all my 40 years. Shannon showed me how to get my 2nd day hair looking right (full, adequately hydrated, soft with hold) and walked me through every step of how to make my fine, thin, 3a/2b curls/waves look bouncy and gorgeous. I was so excited, just to be let down. I loved the Curly Girl book, it changed my curls life! I did some research and was extremely excited to learn Shapes Salon offered the product line & Deva Cut!! I read reviews and Julia McBride had received the best but she was booked for 2 months. So I asked for the next Deva expert, Richelle had an opening in three weeks, since she was the owner I took it.It was the worst experience. Richelle was not friendly, which is fine if you can cut my curls. I asked to keep my length and for a cool shade of brown for the color, I specified no red. (I had had enough of the red tint fm home hair color)Richelle was working on myself and another client at the same time. The girl helping her, worked on me about 70% of the time and she was not even Deva trained! When I was done what I had was a short flat head of RED tinted curls and a bill for $175!! I was so sick to my stomach because I looked horrible and paid $175 for it. I never really complain about bad cuts, I have grown used to them and just deal until they grow out but I also never pay that much for a cut and color. I would advise you do not book with Richelle for a Deva cut, which cost more. She just hands you over to someone not even Deva trained. Worse then being unfriendly she does not listen to what you want.I called the next day to fix the color and she was out of town but had someone else fix it at no cost, not really because she was someone different I tipped. I will say that as I sat there Julie had a few curly clients, one at a time, and they walked out looking great and happy. Like others in this stream my experience was not professional and the cut is uninspired and does not show any particular expertise with curly hair. Ricelle the owner did not greet me when I arrived at their new location that is basically unmarked. She was in a very important discussion with her other stylist about sick kids. Neither greeted me right away because their discussion was so important. The place is dirty, they do not sweep up the hair from the last haircut and there is hair ALL OVER the floor, gross. Ricelle has a disdainful, superior attitude no doubt and frankly I can' t understand why because her haircuts are average at best. To show further unprofessionalism her and her stylist complained about the other lady there who was getting a coloring and had "WAITED TOO LONG" so now she should have to pay for a more expensive color job, blah blah blah. This is like most salons in Denver - long on cost, short on talent. Keep looking! ps The before-after pictures demonstrate the issue perfectly, she looked better before! read more

Had high hopes for this salon and the Deva haircut. The owner did my cut and gossiped about her staff. She asked how I wanted my hair and I told her I wanted to keep it long, she was preoccupied with every thing around her and didn't seem to pay much attention to what I asked for. My hair looked as though it was cut with a weed eater. It was shorter on one side. I paid extra for the Deva cut yet she did not use any of the products on my hair. She tried to sell me on some other product line. I did not call her back to fix the mess for fear of what else she might do! Do not recommend this salon! A very expensive mistake!!!! read more

I am a curly girl and have been a devoted Deva Curl product girl since the products first came out years ago. I have read the Curly Girl book and just bought the updated version. I have been to two other people in the Denver/Metro area who are trained in the Deva method but can't compare to the skill of Julia McBride. I have kept my hair long for most of my life because most stylists cut curly hair the same as everyone else, wet, so my curls get weird. I only go to Shapes for Megan. If she did not work there I would not set one foot in this place. The junior stylist (don't know her name) was loud and obnoxious, the desk staff were rude and inattentive. I was told that I was to write TWO different checks (one for the cut and one for Megan's tip). Really?! While Megan was working on me, the guy from the desk came up on me without warning and threw a towel around my neck...just VERY intrusive! Unless you are there to get a cut from Megan, find someplace else. read more

I've received two good haircuts here from two different stylists (Megan and Mary) and a good brow tint and wax from Dana. It's nice to have a reasonably priced place nearby that has curly hair stylists on staff; it's so hard to get a good cut when you have curly hair! If you have curly hair and you've never had a Deva cut, you really need to try it; they'll also explain to you how to take care of and style your curly hair to maximize the curl, and it makes a huge difference. This place has more staff turnover than any place I've ever been. In that process they ripped me off of a $200 facial package as they lost their esthetician. They wouldn't refund and then when they finally got Simone they said my credit was too old. Buyer beware! If I could give negative stars I would. If you are an African American woman with natural hair, DO NOT GO HERE. They lie on their website, as I can tell you for a fact that they do not specialize/certify in natural curly hair. Anything more than wavy or moderately curly hair and you're going to walk out looking like you put your finger in a light socket. I literally cried leaving their location. I have had my hair cut by More Than Curly and was over the moon, however I do not live close enough to their salon for it to be convienent. As Shapes CLAIMED to have the same certification and expertise I decided to give them a try. WORST IDEA OF MY LIFE. The stylist actually had the audacity to tell me my hair was "clumpy" and it would always be that way and that there was essentially no hope. Which I know to be wrong because of the stylings of More Than Curly. She then proceeded to tell me that all of the products I use are wrong, which I assume was only in the hopes to get me to buy the expensive products she kept pushing on me. WORSE, I paid $85 for a haircut I could have gotten at Super Cuts for $15. I never mind paying the price for my hair to be healthy. As many African American woman are, I am very timid about getting my haircut as I have had disasters in the past. But when people like the women at Shapes use that to their advantage and lie about being specialized simply to up-charge their prices it makes me extremely angry. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED. read more

I went to Shapes after buying a Groupon deal for haircut and partial highlights. Upon entering, the guy at the front desk didn't even greet me, which I should have expected because he was extremely rude on the phone. My appointment was with Shannon, and I explained that I hadn't colored my hair in over 5 years and did not want to do anything drastic. I used the words "natural" and "subtle" to describe the look I was going for with highlights- just something to brighten it up a bit. I ended up with bright white streaks in my hair, and couldn't even see the "lowlight" she supposedly put in and charged me $30 extra dollars for. My hair is dark brown, so bleach blond streaks are anything but natural looking on me. It actually looked like I had gray streaks in my hair and aged me a lot. After telling her that the highlights were WAY lighter than I expected, she told me to give it a few days and come back to get it fixed if I still didn't like it. Needless to say, I still didn't like it and made an appointment the next day to have it fixed. I had to wait another week to get in to get it fixed. When I went back, I was barely even asked what I wanted to do to change it. Shannon told me I'd end up with sunkissed caramel highlights. Well, now that I've had it "fixed," it looks like I never had anything done to my hair at all! It's back to dark brown, no highlights. I guess it looks "natural" again, but I might as well never have gotten it highlighted to begin with. I cannot believe that a trained stylist doesn't know how to do highlights somewhere in between bleach blond and dark brown. The only reason I'm giving the 2 star rating was because the cut was decent. Nothing special, and I left the salon with a wet head both times. read more

After experiencing nothing but bad haircut after bad haircut I finally decided to go to a salon that specializes in curly hair and that's when I found Shapes. I had my first ever Deva cut and color with Shannon in April. While Shannon herself is a very lovely person and gave me a lot of good info on how to style my hair, I was very underwhelmed with both the cut and color. Firstly, I called in and asked for the new customer special which was a Deva cut and highlights for $125.00. I made sure to tell them twice (once on the phone and once in person) that I wanted this special. They said no problem. Well when I was finished it ended up being over $200! I'm not sure how a $125.00 special ended up being over $200. A few weeks later I noticed several pieces of hair longer than the others sticking out and the entire right side of my hair is a good inch or more longer than the left. Not only that, you can barely tell I have highlights. For a haircut and color costing over 200 dollars this is NOT what I expected. I tried to wait it out for a few months thinking I just needed to get used to it and let it grow out but unfortunately I haven't. I really wish I would've said something to them sooner but I tried to be patient much to my detriment. I don't think I'll be returning to Shapes again and have to find yet another salon to fix my hair. read more
