I am a self proclaimed fan of dive bars. I try to ignore it, but I just can't. They have character and Sharlene's is no exception. Met a friend here for drinks. Nice neighborhood bar! Not a huge beer selection, but there's something on the list for everyone. It was a little louder than I had hoped, but just as dark as I had hoped. Nothing magical here, but not much to complain about either. This is the type of neighborhood bar that makes you love your area and brag about it to every friend you have. Chill-as-hell atmosphere, comfortable table seating for friends, plenty of bar-stool seating, and a super-friendly bartender. Everything I look for in a go-to bar. Sharlene's is one of my favorite bars. Their happy hour lasts for huge expanses of time and means $3 drafts of a very solid variety of beers. Bartenders (especially Matt) are extremely friendly and attentive. Ambiance is simple and a bit odd. Trivia night is Mondays and starts at 830/9. Is truly an experience and is fun to return to. (Hint: Check their Facebook so that you know which movie will be the subject of the Movie Rounds. Showing up having not watched the film ruins a team's score). Did a great job covering the World Cup. Doesn't normally have TV's but used a projection screen and opened very early for (almost) all games. read more

My Brooklyn host called Sharlene's a dive bar, but I'm here to tell you it's everything you'd want and anything you make of it. Claiming the bar's namesake is often behind the bar herself only made me feel better about taking in this local bar as part of my most recent trip to Brooklyn. It's classic with flowers in vases and candles evenly placed along the bar, but hip with the latest twists on retro cocktails and stocking some of the latest trends in spirits. It has a great beer selection (though I haven't been to a bar in Brooklyn that didn't) and the bartender was the perfect amount of friendly and business. If I lived here...this would be my bar. read more

I really like this bar and thought I would frequent it until I saw how rude the bartender Erik was to patrons. Initially I planned to give a five star rating but was completely turned off by this bartender's obnoxious and arrogant behavior towards me and whoever else sits at the bar. Too bad he is doing this establishment a complete disservice because I will never return here and make sure all of my local and non local friends do not visit this place. This is easily my friends and I's new favorite bar. We just recently discovered it and can't stop going back. First off, $3 drafts during happy hours. Great beer selection too. Taps that include craft brews and some canned choices too. They have a few pinball machines, a jukebox, and a big selection of board games to play. The mood of the bar is always very very friendly and open. I feel like any person could come here and feel comfortable. Also- there is a 24 hour diner right next door..and a pretty good wing place as their other neighbor. They let you bring in takeout and eat it there. It's perfect. Check it out!! We love this bar. 8pm Saturday. me, the boyfriend, the 3rd most bored bartender i've ever met, 3 cold beers and a jukebox all hopped up on credits playing song after song of my personal favorites. when what to my wondering eyes should appear? the grinch of flatbush -- AKA sharlene herself, showing up to make us poor drunken Who's pay for the juke! (warranting a 1/5 deduction from the irish judge) i don't mind a dead bar--just the opposite, in fact. but seriously--making your only 2 customers pay for the juker? come on now. i was expecting a little more hospitality--- like perhaps a freaking round (or at least a shot) on the house! but to be forced to PAY for juke which had previously been FREE? it's indecent. but let's start at the beginning. the set up: back in the day, sharlene's was the most kickass irish dive in whoville ("whoville" is herein defined as the trinity of green/slope/heights) and had been around for 20-sumodd years. sharlene took over last spring and re-did the place. i hadn't been here since Mooney's went to that big guinness spout in the sky, and i have been curious to see what the new owners had done to it. the scene: with the dartboard gone AWOL, there's really nothing to do here at all except drink beers and shots and play the radical jukebox (generously stocked with guided by voices and the replacements in addition to the requisite cash/zep permutations). i'm all for the newish, spit-clean bathroom, but the 50s-style vinyl-covered cafe chairs and tables are weirdly out of context, especially since new-mooney's doesn't serve food. what they do serve is 7 kinds of beer and plenty of whiskeys (thumbs WAY up). the pay off: i think with time and patience, sharlene's has potential to turn into a favorite nabe joint, and hopefully sharlene herself will loosen up a bit. times are tough, but you don't win regs by gouging them, honestly. read more

I typically enjoyed this bar until last night. The bartender did not like his customers to question his drinks. When told that one of the drinks was too spicy, he said we didn't know what we wanted and charged me for another drink. This is tough to review. On one hand, it is one of, if not the only, true neighborhood bars left in the Park Slope area. I want to automatically support them just based on that alone. That being said, I went here in the early-to-mid-90's and back then it was welcoming, it had a neighborhood warm feeling and a great vibe. When i went in recently, it had maybe 50 people inside and it looked like every single person was white. I happen to be a white male, but it still felt like a frat party and not an actual establishment. In the 90's, there seemed to be more tables set up. In 2022, it looked like a wide open space with not a lot of tables compared to back in the day. There were chairs at the bar but other than that, a lot of people standing... just a wide open space with the feel of a warehouse. Regardless, it is a shell of it's former self. Being that these days, it appears to be an all-white preppy crowd, I can imagine that a Black or Latino might feel out of place here. The 2 female bartenders were not welcoming, but maybe they were having a bad day. Still, this place used to have soul back in the 90's and maybe early 2000's. I would still go here above any other bar in the Park Slope or Prospect Heights area, but this place is not what it once was, back when it was previously called "Mooney's Pub". I would rate it 3 and a half stars. This review is in a way more a review of how gentrification changed this area and not the bar itself, in a way. You are way better off going here than one of the 30-plus bars on 5th avenue in Park Slope, because this place is way more down-to-earth and less upscale than those places on 5th. But it is still preppy and a white crowd with the feel of almost a Duke University frat party, for example. That is all fine, but this place back in the day was more real, welcoming, and had the feel of a neighborhood bar, unlike these days. read more

This is banana pants! Why haven't I been here before? This is sooo my type of place. OK. Pause. Confession. I work out at the gym across the street and I always envisioned it as a seedy lil joint with leprechauns hobbling around. Come to find it, this bar is laid back, pretty roomy, and has clean bathrooms. The service is super chill and friendly. Disclaimer; my friend is a bartender here, but I would still go here regardless. The juke box has a random but good mix of Motown and Rock tunes. Best of all they have board games, which is perfect for a Sunday evening out for drinks. I think this should be a bar requisite. read more

I was here for a happy hour. The girl bartender was very unfriendly and a tiny martini for $11. She didn't even say thank you. I really don't mind tip to the service staff because I am a waitress too. I don't get it how bartenders can be unfriendly and let us think that they are making us a favor if they smile. Come on! I try not to write bad reviews, but I figure if something is this bad, someone should speak up. Sharlene's took over Mooney's, a great Brooklyn institution, and a true Irish Pub quite a few years ago, but unfortunately, only the facade remains. There is nothing New York, Brooklyn, or even Irish about this place. A surly bartender with a keen eye for the pour and rough demeanor is what you expect when you walk in, but what you get at this wanna-be pub is just bad attitudes, bad music, bad bartenders, and an even worse owner. This place is either for tourists or for hateful and hurt people who NEVER want conversation or typical barroom stimulation, but rather would prefer to weep into their watery beers and think about how they've wasted their lives. After soberly visiting this scab of a bar and having a brief conversation with Sharlene herself, I left and seriously considered blowing my brains out just for knowing that such a person existed upon this earth, but I wrote a Yelp review instead. read more

My favorite bar of all time. I only go there when the polish bartender Karolina is working there, which is Friday, Sunday and Monday. Her cocktails are the best and her Bloody Mary is my favorite!!! I fell in love with their beef patty. So great. The location is superb. Very close to B/Q 7th avenue train. read more

Much nicer inside than it looks from the outside. My interest had been piqued for months by what looked like amazing happy hour specials and highly entertaining chalkboard adverts, but I had (wrongly) been assuming this place was a slightly sketchy dive bar. Finally went in on a Saturday night, late, and was happy to discover a lively but not overly crowded bar with very friendly bartender, good music and a great vibe. Seemed to be a fair mix of regulars and people who stumbled in off Flatbush. The board games and drink specials are an awesome bonus. I will definitely be back. read more

I have lived and worked in Prospect Heights for years and often frequented the former Irish pub of Mooney's, and I have spent limited time at Sharlene's. Until my last experience for the Friday after work drink. Things were fine with daytime bartender who took off at like 7p. The next shift gave me my bill. After signing and tipping, I thought better of it and inquired after the itemized charges. I was told that my party's drinks were as follows: 2-$8, 1-$5, 1-$10, and 1-$6 and that added to a grand total of $39 pre-tax of 8.875%.. When I informed the bartender that did not add to $39, BUT to $37, and that I was just pointing it out so that next time they are more careful (he already had a paid receipt that included a tip AND WAS NOT requesting a refund) he then told me that the computer adds it up, that my math was wrong and it was just how it was. Sharlene's owner I hope you read this! Your worker's attitude sucked, he was a dismissive jerk, and refused to actually consider that he made a mathematical error. Or maybe treating your repeat customers like crap is business as usual. I have lived in the neighborhood for over 10 years, I have friends who refused to patronize your establishment, and now you have another. And given that I took my staff to your bar to celebrate an event a month before this incident, another one of your bartenders encouraged my 300+ person firm to become regulars. I THINK NOT! You have definitely lost a patron. Horrible service, the only benefit you have is that it is next to the Subway and cheap. read more

Great, cozy neighborhood bar. Pretty good beers on tap, hot drinks available in the winter, decent prices, and never too crowded. The Asian bartender, as others have noted, is a (the?) problem here, though. He walks away from my friend while she's in the middle of ordering (three drinks; you can't remember three drinks?), comes back with an $8 hot toddy containing, based on the taste and complete transparency, zero liquor, and then is an asshole about it when politely asked to top it off. Sorry you couldn't get a job in the LES, bro, but at some neighborhood joint in Brooklyn it's part of your job not to be a jackass. The other bartenders are great, including a gal I take to be Sharlene herself and an Irish guy, also very friendly. But I may just turn around and go somewhere else next time I see that guy working; I don't have enough money to spend it on his tips. read more

Mellow, dark ambiance, usually plenty of room at the bar and tables, pinball, boardgames, and a great jukebox. This particular bartender (African American) was not so friendly but not unfriendly either, probably because he doesn't know how to engage because not so many Asians come here. I tipped him anyway. He just works there. We had two IPAs for 5 bucks each. Great deal for happy hours. I don't mind coming back for a beer when I'm in the neighborhood again. read more

I've been to this bar a number of times in the last year. This place is not bad. It's definitely not great either - a real hit or miss depending on your bartender. The New Yorker in me doesn't need too much fluff to be content and so I find a few of the bartenders pretty chill, but the English guy (who everyone here likes) can be a bit grating and although he seems attentive, walking up and down the bar, he's not necessarily up to speed with the drinks, more of a wandering chatterbox. The woman, she's grating too, but much worse. One night, I put down my c.c. and proceeded to drink a good 10 or so shots and a hell of a lot of beer. Not one single buy back. My bill - forget about it. I dropped a fair tip, though she definitely didn't deserve it. My advice: don't go in when she's behind the bar. She loud and damn rude. If you go in and it's any of the other bartenders, it's a pretty decent spot. Escape the heat, enjoy the happy hour and leave a bit imbibed. read more
