I stopped here to celebrate finishing the bar exam and saw that they had some Pappy Van Winkle and figured if I don't try it now, I won't have a better reason for a while and dropped some real cash on a glass and I was pretty pleased with it. It really does taste liek nothing else and if you've got something worth celebrating, I'd grab a glass and drink it slow. They've also got la chouffe on tap which is dope. read more

Fulton Grand is the best spot for happy hour if you're lucky enough to get off before 7pm. Cheap drinks, outdoor seating, and you can order food! Here's a tip: They have menus of all of the restaurants that deliver in the neighborhood. The bar encourages customers to order food to the bar. It's best in the summer time. I recommend the guac and chips from Cochinta and cold budweiser while sitting outside watching the sunset :) read more

Located on a triangular corner, where Fulton and Putnam meet on Grand, is a magical place..... ok it's far from magical, but it ain't bad. It's the Fulton Grand. Fulton Grand offers lots of great things. And leaves plenty of other things to be desired. I've had great nights here along with bad moments which made my stop real short. Let's start with the good. They have a really large beer selection. From a decent tap selection to lots of bottles and cans to offer. Some exclusive gems mixed in there at times as well. The have some nice outdoor seating the take advantage of during the nice weather. While it's not the most beautiful corner, it's nice to take advantage of on a summer's night. What can be better? Sometimes the taps taste a little funky. Has happened on more than one occasion. Also the service. I'm quick to praise good service and willing to turn a blind eye, but oh man I've had one of the worst experiences ever here. I came in. Sat at the bar with a friend. The TWO bartenders were talking to someone for ten minutes straight. I kid you not. The barback saw we were there. He could have even said something. It was a joke. I'm not gonna wave a flag and say something because I know it's rude from my experience behind the bar, but ten minutes. Woah. I'm sorry. That's inexcusable. I got up and left. I didn't come back for sometime after that. I've forgiven them and while the service isn't the best in the world, it's good enough. It's good for a crew inside or for a few people outside. It's with a really heavy heart that I give this place 3 stars. In nearly every fiber of its being, its a 5 star Brooklyn pub: great beer list, great drinks all around, incredibly hospitable staff, awesome vibe, superior tunes, and friendly patrons. On a quiet night it feels like home, and even on a busy night everyone is respectful and it's always a good time. It's one of the most authentic and down to earth drinking establishments in Brooklyn. So why three stars? In a sense it's a personal issue, but it's one myself and multiple other people share, and it has to do with the back room. The back room is the pits? No. The back room, like the rest of the bar, is practically perfect! Beautifully decorated, well lit, the bartenders will turn the music off or on for you depending on your preference, perfect for a crowd or for privacy (depending on the night). A group of seven of us set up a regular game night there and given the welcomeness and atmosphere of the bar, were happy each evening to drop a large amounts of our modest earnings on drinks and merriment. It's just... that Big Buck Hunter machine... a malignant monolith of misogyny, cultural appropriation, and animal cruelty...blaring in the corner like the bigot no one invited to the party but who insists on spewing their two cents of venomous negativity into every conversation they weren't a part of. Call me a "snowflake," but it became such a point of contention with our group (nearly all of whom found it offensive), that we eventually just picked another place to host the get-together. I know those arcade cabinets were a staple of dive bars through much of the early 2000s, and I'd get it if people were lining up to play, but on any given night I've been there, quiet or crowded, I've never seen a single person put a single dollar in that stupid machine. The most attention I've ever seen anyone pay to it is an occasional peek into that otherwise charming back room followed by "why the f**k is there a Big Buck Hunter back here?" Like it's such an anachronistic eyesore they don't react to seeing the 7 young professional men and women sitting back there playing D&D like an intense session of nerd poker. I hate to give this place three stars, but that machine became such a buzzkill on our game nights that we had to find a new place, and it straight up sucks because we were so happy playing there...it's just such a bummer. Placing that ridiculous game in such a beautiful bar, it just doesn't make any sense; it's like putting a "Honk if You Love Boobs" sticker on an Aston Martin.... read more

I started to just forget the treatment I got here last night. I left this bar and went to one down the street and had an awesome time with my girlfriend. For me, this should have been the end of it. When I woke up this morning and still felt the sting of my treatment here I knew I had to write this review. Let me say that I love this neighborhood. I just moved here from Harlem and one of the great attractions of this neighborhood for me is the excellent selection of bars. My girlfriend, who has lived in the this neighborhood for almost a decade suggested we go and grab a drink here. We walked in and the two bartenders at the bar looked at us and looked in the other direction. We figured, maybe they are just busy, so we'll wait. One of the bartenders then left from behind the bar and went into a downstairs area. The other bartender continued to do busy work, I guess he was writing orders or something, I have no idea, I do know that it felt like he was making an effort not to come to our end of the bar. We're pretty tall people, my girlfriend is 5'11 with a head full of dreadlocks and I'm 6' 3' and I had on the brightest shirt I own so we were kinda hard to miss. So my girlfriend who is infinitely bolder than I am decided to walk to his end of the bar and make herself known. The bartender looked at her and actually sneered...and then looked past her to talk someone who was leaving. Mind you, WE ARE RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM and he gave her this look that for me said, "You are not welcome here." Normally, I would have lost it on him, but decided not too, the day was too long and I simply wanted to have two good drinks, some laughs and go home. Besides, I would never argue with someone who is fixing a drink for me. I opted to leave instead. My girlfriend was disgusted and so was I. Writing this review is disappointing to me because I've passed this bar so many times since moving here and was really looking forward to an opportunity to drink and enjoy myself here. I tip well so really it was their loss. Judging by the number of favorable reviews perhaps this was an anomoly and maybe the bartender was having a bad night. I'd hate to think we were being discriminated against (even though I saw no people of color here). Yesterday this bar lost two customers...good ones. Maybe that doesn't matter to them and that's okay, but at some point this kind of treatment of customers will catch up to them and then it will. read more

WARNING: THEFTS This is a really great bar. It's beautifully decorated, they have a great beer selection, and it is obviously a hopping neighborhood bar. My friend and I spent three great hours chatting over beers... until we went to leave and I realized that my wallet had been stolen out of my bag as it hung from my chair. Neither I nor my friend had seen anyone reach into my bag and take it, probably because we had been lulled into a false sense of security by the classiness and hipster clientele of the bar. I probably would have been more vigilant in some seedy dive, but that's what makes thieving here so effective. The police told me that this has been happening at this bar multiple times since it opened. You might be thinking "I would never be so careless or inattentive," but the truth is, you probably have been and you didn't notice. Don't let someone take advantage of your sense of community and brotherhood - keep an eye on your belongings and if you see someone acting suspiciously, SAY SOMETHING, FOR GOD'S SAKE. I wish someone had for me. Spending hours talking to police and trying to cancel my cards at midnight on Sunday is not the best way to end Thanksgiving weekend. And to the ratfink that stole my wallet - I hope those metro cards and movie tickets will serve you well in hell. read more

I went once and I can't go back again. A bar like this belongs up on Bedford and N 5th, not in Clinton Hill. Got a table with some friends, and literally were in hysterics/nausea by the B.O. coming off the hip folks next to us. Seriously - it was so bad we almost left completely! Super slow service, obnoxious vibe...it was then that I realized I am old and not cool (plus I enjoy a daily shower. Seriously.) If you want the watering hole for Brooklyn Gentrifiers Inc, or the over-cool, come on down! I admit as a white man I have to confront my own role in the changes in our neighborhood, but this place doesn't help. read more

The highpoints of my recent visit to Fulton Grand: 1. A dog was standing on a stool, front paws resting on the back of the stool, offering licks to anyone who was interested. 2. Beer selection pretty good. Not vast, but solidly good. Since I have only been once, I can't say if they rotate the taps regularly. 3. The bar is cozy. 4. There is a creperie across the street where you can get fantastic crepes that you can bring in. They are open til 10pm and you can even practice your French with the owners, if you are so inclined. I've been twice. First time the service was terribly slow and unattentive, so it's been almost a year since then that I went back. This time, the apparent owner of the bar was very rude to a man who had stopped to talk with me and my girlfriends. He lost a sale because he got really uppity about his attempting to order a drink from him outside. The place wasn't busy, and the owner or manager or whatever wasn't really doing anything. Our new friend didn't realize he couldn't order outside, and this guy jumped down his throat for doing it. Then later, when we got cold and all went inside, the four women all got drinks right away, and this guy wasn't served for at least 20 minutes. Again, it still wasn't busy, and there were two or three bartenders as well as the owner/manager guy (who was just standing around chatting up clientele). The four of us women looked like white yuppies; our friend was a black man in camo pants with a pair of beats by dre and a hat on his head. So unless these two people had some kind of former history together of which I am unaware, it felt pretty blatantly prejudiced to me. Pretty much killed the atmosphere...what little there was. And the cocktails at Alice's Arbor were 100x better. I won't be going back to The Fulton Grand. read more

I really want to love this bar. Most of the bartenders I've met there have been fantastic. This is why I am not giving 5 stars: I have one qualm that may ultimately prevent me from returning: Ordered a drink. Drink is served, I take a couple sips and go to the bathroom. When I return, my seat is taken and my drink is gone. The bartender slides my credit card to me and says "you forgot this." I had paid my tab and wanted to finish my drink. Apparently that wasn't in the deck of cards. It might have been a mistake/misunderstanding, but I felt slighted. I am a pretty non-confrontational person and since I had previous engaged in conversation with the bartender, I figured they would save my seat and my drink. I paid for a drink and it was taken away only after a few sips. It's really unfortunate because I was really beginning to like this bar but that experience ultimately left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

This has become my new watering hole. With a great beer and bourbon selection, I can't really ask for anything more. They'll let you order food into the bar, and there are free pretzels. The bartenders are always nice, and the place is very low key and relaxed. It gets a bit crowded on a Friday night, but that's expected with most any bar. The happy hour is amazing, with two dollars off everything from 3 to 8. It's great if you're entertaining a friend on a budget in the afternoon. Even without the happy hour, it's pretty affordable, with 6 - 8 dollar drafts of craft beers. If I could afford it and have the time, I'd be there more often, but for now it's perfect for me. read more

After two visits to (The) Fulton Grand, I'm prepared to make what is--at least in my world--a rather rare statement: it's a good bar. Which, considering Fulton Grand is just a few blocks from my apartment, is fantastic news. I'd actually waited some time before I went--in part because I wasn't prepared for another disappointment in the neighborhood (like, for example, the "food" at Hot Bird) but also because the timing was never right. Anyway, now that this (entirely unnecessary) background information is out of the way, let's break down the pros and cons of the joint: Nice mellow, atmosphere. Heavy, film-noir style blinds, nice wood tables and candles, some exposed brick. A good selection of beers in bottles and on draft (but hey, why just one--super expensive wine bottle sized, to boot--IPA in a bottle?) They have Dale's Pale Ale in cans, too, which is always a sign of good taste. The music is at the right volume, too, and they always seem to be playing something good--Fleet Foxes, Avi Buffalo, Beatles. The few strikes against might be the lack of food--although they have a massive pile of menus behind the bar if you ask--and sort of high-ish prices. That aside, Clinton Hill, breathe a sigh of relief: you finally have a solid watering hole to call yer own. read more

I found out about this bar after reading about it in NY Mag. After one visit, I was only sorry that I hadn't known about such a great place being in my neighborhood sooner! I loved being able to bring my dog along and meeting new friends via our friendly pups. The drink selection is perfect: diverse, affordable and not too complicated - everything you would hope a neighborhood bar would be. I also love that you can walk 10 feet and get an order of pommes frites to bring back to your bar stool, and they also keep a stash of menus behind the bar. But when my friends and I were getting ready to leave, the bartender became abusive, yelling hurtful xenophobic profanities at us, simply because he thought he deserved a bigger tip. A seriously great bar. I dropped by here about quarter after one last Saturday looking for a fairly quiet place to do some studying, I was pretty much the only person in the place with the exception of the very friendly and knowledgeable bartender and her wide array of interesting craft beers on tap. The place has a very cozy feel, with some great tunes that range from rock, to some light punk, and if I remember right some oldies. The prices were more than fair, with most taps ranging from $6-$7, combined wit$2 off for happy hour (starting at 3). Around 3:30-4 the bar started to pick up and the bartender even put some tables and chairs outside for those who wanted to take advantage of the warmer-than-normal weather. Overall a great experience and would definitely come back for some happy hour specials. read more

A very respectable beer bar from the gentlemen who brought you Fourth Ave Pub and Washington Commons. If it's at all possible to believe, this place is darker than both of the aforementioned bars, as well as smaller and seemingly composed of sharp angles. I can't tell you how many pointy ledges I've backed into. Recently, the bar expanded into another room (where did it come from?? I swear there was solid wall there before) consisting three picnic tables. In the warm weather, the bar's footprint extends further as drinkers colonize the generous Clinton Hill sidewalks. I should also note that Fulton Grand is a crucial stop on what I'm constructing as the Bed-Stuy to Crown Heights bar crawl. It's a long walk from Do or Dine to The Bearded Lady (and vice versa), and in winter, with its fogged-up windows, the Fulton Grand couldn't look more welcoming. read more

Very happy to finally have a nice bar to grab a beer at in the neighborhood. Good selection of craft beers and bourbons just like at 4th Ave Pub. Nothing spectacularly interesting about the bar, but it's attractive and sort of sexy, even. That might be due to the super dark (not dim) lighting scheme they have going on. This was a great place to find on a hot Friday afternoon. Plus it was the only place open before 4pm. I was impressed with the variety of beer they had on tap. They definitely had something for every palate--even non-beer drinkers. It was all high quality beer for the right price. It's easily accessible by subway and bus for anyone in the area, and worth a trip. They have free pretzels to snack on, and the bar tender was friendly and helpful. She let us sample as many beers as we needed before we selected our elixir of choice. I will definitely head there again and take more friends. read more

Went there for the first time this weekend and was excited to find such a great bar so close to home. The bar has a very cozy feel, dark with candles and a bunch of seating options in addition to the main bar - a few high top tables in addition to some smaller tables in the back. The bartender was really friendly, chatted with us about the neighborhood and gave us a few tastes of some of the beers we were unfamiliar with. We were there on Sunday night on a three-day weekend and while it wasn't packed, there was a decent crowd. The bartender did say it gets pretty packed on normal weekends, and they're open until 4. Both times it's been the same bartender and he was super friendly and mixed a really great martini....sat inside the first time and outside the second...and felt at home in both circumstances. I was thrilled to discover this place, for two reason. First, because it's basically right outside my front door and second because it's basically right outside my front door. The beer list is top notch and cheap! It has a nice hipster/yuppie vibe going for it and although it's not a HUGE bar, it has two bathrooms, so you never have to wait, (I assume not everyone can just walk home to use their own bathroom). Although it's brand new it has a "we've been here for years" feeling and doesn't seem to be experiencing the growing pains that most new places go through. Definitely check it out. One suggestion for the proprietors, what about some outside benches, tables? There's definitely enough room and that'd make this the sweetest bar ever. read more

The good news is this bar has a fine selection of beers, a cool, relatively quiet back room with communal seating, and happy hour from 4 - 8pm. If you're lucky, the bartender who will serve you will be the one who never stops smiling. (She's amazing for that smile alone.) The bad news is that the regulars can be a little cliquey, and that if you use a credit or debit card instead of cash, you'll get charged tax. Spoke to another bartender (the taller, friendlier, and generally cooler punk-rockish woman that might in fact live there) about this point and she said the owner won't budge on it. Not anyone else's fault, but if you charge, just be aware of that and try not to punish the bartender for it -- unless it's the shorter, less-cool, vaguely punk-rockish bartender who honors happy hour selectively and otherwise seems to serve drinks only when her phone fails to hold her interest. This bar is pretty awesome...its right around the corner...they have some really great beers on draft...and they have a very large selection of whiskeys. It's my kind of place. I read in a previous review that the happy hour (which gets you $2 off of everything) was coming to an end..but thats not true. I went there this evening and the bartender informed me that I should come back for happy hour because they have the $2 off special. The atmosphere in the bar was very nice and had a warm feel to it. A friend of mine used to live around the corner from 4th Avenue Pub (FG's sister bar). Now that we've both moved the tables have turned, and it is I who live within a stone's throw of an awesome bar! *evil laugh* What I like: +Tasty craft beers. Try a sour, you might love it. +Amazing happy hour w/ $2 off everything. That means $4 pints and $3 well drinks. Woohoo! +Lots of space inside and out for you and all your friends and dogs. As a corollary, awesome people-watching (this neighborhood has some nice-looking folks). +A cozy yet minimal space that invites conversation or even quiet solo drinking, and seems to discourage craziness. +Free pretzels to soak up the beer with! The only minus I can think of is the occasionally oblivious bartenders. Helloooo, stop texting, I am trying to order a drink!
