Want a cool laid back neighborhood bar on Flatbush. Well my good friend this is it. I dropped in here after work for a quick drink. One drink turned into two and then into three . The bartender was super cool and laid back and made my drink exactly to my liking as requested and he had a pretty damn cool accent also. It is dive bar but I love a good dive bar. The prices are extremely reasonable and they are open pretty late as well. I have heard they have awesome food but I have yet to try it. But don't worry your pretty little head because once I try their food I will be update this review. read more

went here for a date on a friday. very good spot. never got insanely crowded, the way so many other bars can. and the music was definitely hoppin'. it wasn't too loud to talk over, and was a real conversation piece. of course, this was before we realized it was a juke box. i thought it was just some schizophrenic ipod playlist. "really? ABBA? now the theme from shaft? alright." the beer selection is solid, and prices are spot on. $6 for a coney island lager. saw lots of people drinking some fancy schmancy looking cocktails. they all had smiles on their faces. read more

A soon as I walked in to Sharlene's I got really comfortable with the look and feel of the place. The downside were the cocktails my friend and I got served. He ordered a Gin and Tonic, I ordered the Moscow Mule. Both were made with flavored soda from a machine, and you could taste it. The $8 price tag on the Mule isn't justified. The place just looks and feels nicer than what we got served. Moral of the story... Just order beer. And they shouldn't serve that stuff anymore. read more

Amazing bar I loved it. I was only there from 4-7pm, so I do not know what the night life is like, but when I went it was great nice and low key. the bartender was friendly and personable, he even let us have tastes of the taps when I had trouble deciding which to get. Also the music they played was 50's music, none of the top 40 stuff. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience, and 3 dollar draft beers are the best. read more

tl; dr version - great, large dive bar, underpriced, heavy-pour drinks, a friendly, accommodating bartender, and a relaxed vibe. A+ I've heard about this place for years and finally made it there a couple of times in the past 6 months. My second time, I went with an old friend, who I don't see often, but we always have a great, relaxing time together with a lot of storytelling and lots of laughs. We had a great time at Sharlene's - I can't remember the bartender's name but she was very friendly and chill and didn't blink an eye when I asked for her to make my drink in a very specific way. Both our drinks were heavy pours and cheap for top-shelf liquor in NYC. My friend and I ended up chatting with the person next to us and the three of us had a great, old time (and, in fact, the 2 of them split a cab back to Manhattan). It may be too premature to express my love for Sharlene's here but, if I lived in the neighborhood, I would be here every week, based on my first 2 experiences. This bar is okay but not a go to place at all. Its fine to grab a drink here but its not a place where you want to stay for hours. It has a calm, boring atmosphere which may be good if you want to have a long conversation with someone. The drinks were good and not too expensive. Well drinks were about $8. It was also insanely hot inside the bar which is awesome if its extremely cold outside but not so awesome when the place gets crowded and you are sweating. The bar has a wonderful ambiance and great crowd of guests but unfortunately the experience was tainted by the bartender with the difficult personality and unpleasant service. He was incredibly rude and impatient with us. he literally slammed our drinks on the counter and gave us an extremely uncomfortable side eye for the remainder of our stay by the bar. read more

What an awesome jem just about 5 blocks from Prospect park. Great booths and dark atmosphere, awesome juke box and Southern twinged drinks. A bit out of the way if you're not from around these parts but great for groups. They also have board games you can take out! read more

I was skeptical of this place because I had always seen it as a career alcoholic type bar. Seems that's not the case anymore. Now it's just a lovely standard dark neighborhood bar with super nice and friendly bartenders. Yes the age range is wider than most bars in the city and I like that about it. And yes there were a few dudes at the end who clearly sit on those seats like every day, but not as intense as the old skool O'Connors crowd like I expected. Nice beer selection, plenty of space, bartenders are fast with awesome memories and there are pinball machines and board games. Totally worth checking out! read more

Man, that Asian bartender was hilarious! I ordered a pretzel which is basically your garden-variety hotdog stand pretzel and he said to come back in ten minutes. I came back about 8 minutes later and he looked at me blankly asking what I wanted, and I mentioned the pretzel and he said "I said come back in ten minutes, it's not ten minutes." That guy is such a laugh riot! I was there with a group of friends on a Friday night and it never got too busy, which is crazy because that bartender is comedy gold! read more

If I could give this bar a half of a star I would. There is nothing I would rather do after getting off a long shift of bartending, than to sit and be tended to. I walked into this bar with intentions of having a beer with a coworker on a Saturday night (well at that time it was early Sunday morning). I cannot even say that I was greeted by a bartender. I was approached by an Asian male, and his first words were "what do you want?". My coworker and I were appalled but we ignored the rude gesture and ordered two beers. Before placing the beers in front of us he throws the coasters at us. We continued to ignore this elder Asian man and asked for a food menu. He pointed up at where the food was written on the wall. We ordered a beef patty and he responded with the price. At this moment my blood is boiling and still remained calm because I am a bartender as well, I can empathize that this guy may be having a bad night. Over all this experience was literally the number one worst experience I have ever had at a bar. I would never recommend anyone coming here. The ambience was off and I should have used my better judgment to just leave upon arrival. read more

The last five years I've lived in Brooklyn, Sharlene's has been the one consistent in my life. The bartenders have made it enjoyable for my friends and I to stop by two or three times a week. Shuhei and Milton (the Mexican and the Asian bartenders) are the reasons that I always come back, but now I've gotten to know all the bartenders. Charlene's is a classic, unpretentious bar where everyone can feel comfortable. The bar itself is a long wooden beauty. You don't go there for fancy mixed drinks. You want basic cocktails, delicious draft beer, and shots as needed. Bar tender Andy was superb - attentive, friendly and generous. A word about the food. We arrived rather late to a friend's informal engagement reception (need I say informal - we were at Charlene's!). We planned on drinking, but needed to eat. Bar tender Andy said the pot pies were good, but we should feel free to order take out and eat at the bar. He had local menus available. We went with the pies, provided by a local purveyor. Andy heated them to perfection. And just to reinforce the point about great service, he said to let him know if they were still cold in the middle. The pies were hot and delicious. A co-worker and I came to this bar after work to get a few beers. We are also bartenders as well. when we walked in the ambiance was cool, candlelights etc. It was extremely boring but it didn't bother me cause we were just here for a beer. As soon as we sat the male bartender said ," what do you want?" he literally threw the coaster at me. my friend and I exchange looks and decided to ignore it. he dropped the beers and said $6. we asked to open the tab and with an attitude he said you obviously have to give me your card. we gave the card and asked if there was food. he pointed up showing the five things they had. when i ordered the jerk chicken patty , he felt the need to tell me it was $5 when it clearly said $5. they then came out with the patty and put it in what looked like a microwave. we literally was there for 10 minutes and that was the worst experience i've EVER experienced. don't know what we did , but it was extremely heartbreaking. the only thing i could've came up with was racism or racial profiling. completely disgusting and i would never even look at that bar again. i literally took a sip of the cider i had , paid the bill and left. the bartender might ave been asian if i'm not mistaken. Been here twice. The decor looks really dated, but the beer specials before 7pm make the place what it is. Great bar. Lots of dark wood, no TVs (though there is a screen that gets pulled down from the far corner for special events such as the Olympics). The drinks are really nicely priced and served with warmth from the friendly staff. If you want a nice spot to go with friends for drinks and a bit of conversation I highly recommend it. Sharlene's is a great neighborhood bar with some of the nicest bartenders in the world. My husband, who doesn't drink, spent most of the summer here watching the World Cup. He ordered sodas and stayed for hours. No one cared, probably because the beer and the soda are basically the same price throughout the day. There's a huge TV and while some food is available, they have plenty of menus on hand for delivery. It's great to have such a welcoming place nearby. read more

This place has a lot of potential. The owner is friendly as are most of the bartenders. They have some fun events as well. Don't go there if that Asian guy is working though! Before I start I will say that she did eventually let me use their washroom. New York is not know for letting people use the washroom for emergency purposes. But, I figured after offering to buy something to use the bathroom and speaking to a woman kindly she might be nice/understanding-wrong.. She treated me like I was a crack head trying to use drugs in a bathroom..wow, She explained they were cleaning the woman's and closed(sign on door says open and a guy had just sat down to eat) in which I replied I can use the men's and I repeat "I'll give you five dollars." she never looks at me runs to back while angry and says go on.. She did eventually let me go(and the porter cleaning was nice to me) so that is the two stars - but wow... after leaving money - no thanks. - nothing nice... just a "Humph" and texting on phone... If I didn't have to use the bathroom-so bad.. I would have handled her in a different way but two wrongs don't make a right.. I just think of other people having to experience what I did and so decided to write this... I worked in service industry for 6 years and "get it" but wow.. . I do think race played a factor in this even though I hate to use that card. She was white- I was black in a brooklyn neighborhood gentrified... this is what I guess "she" has to "deal" with... gentrification of black neighborhoods - this attitude is the worst part of it... Sharlene's feels like a classy dive bar, if there is such thing - simple and minimalist while still clean and polished. The drinks are good and reasonably priced, the juke box has golden hits and unexpected covers, and the company (bartenders and regulars) is quality. The bartenders are all outstanding, offering good service and conversation. Shuhey (pretty certain I'm spelling this incorrectly), the Asian gentleman, is who I see most often. He can come off a bit edgy at first but is really a genuine and admirable guy. He knows how to establish and maintain a friendly relationship with the many types of customers, and he knows how to run a bar. I continue to come for his company, if nothing else. Sharlene is another one who seems a bit tough at first. But again, you come in a few times, and realize she is a sweetheart. This bar is unassuming and always enjoyable. You can have a wild night with a group of friends or come in solo to read and banter with a regular. read more
