Over the past 60 years that I've been going to dentists I've had lots of good ones and a couple that were notably bad. I have been seeing Dr Johnson for about ten years and she is the best so far. It's a two-person office. She does ALL the dental work and that includes cleaning. (for me that was impressive) Her assistant, Saliou, takes care if appointments, insurance issues, and other non-dental activities. The space is clean and friendly. There's always classical music in the background. The appointments are spaced so that (at least for me) there's never a wait. Her manner is calm and conversational and she has always been happy to explain what she's doing and describe any options I might have. Finally, the one or two times I've had to reschedule at the last minute they've always been agreeable and understanding. My sense is their priority is pleasantness over profit. To that end, Dr Johnson focuses on general dentistry. The times I've needed something like a root canal or gum surgery she's referred me out and it's always been to another outstanding practitioner. There's a reason she keeps winning "Best Dentist..." awards an my only hope is that people won't read this and start to flood her appointment book. read more

Dr. J is by far the best dentist I've ever visited. I recommend her to EVERYONE. It's actually a running joke among my friends how much I love my dentist. How great could a dentist really be, right? But actually Dr J really is great!!! Here's why... 1. She is skilled. My teeth were a total mess when I started going to her. As she got to work it became clear that in addition to needing some new fillings, some of my older fillings were simply not done well: at least one was cracking and ultimately fell out, and if my memory serves me correctly another seemed to have been put in without fully cleaning the cavity. I don't want to say that the fillings were sloppily done (certainly Dr J would never describe another dentist's work that way to a patient, even if it was accurate) but dentists always tell me I have a small mouth, and I think it's just difficult to install fillings in certain places. Well, Dr J clearly has the skill to handle it, because she had no trouble re-doing those older fillings and adding a bunch of new ones in equally difficult-to-reach areas. All of that work has held up perfectly for years now. 2. She is calm and coolheaded at all times. I've probably had ~20 appointments with her and not once has she ever appeared even remotely rushed, nervous, or worried. Once she mentioned at the end that something had actually been quite tricky and this was a total surprise to me- I never would've guessed. Contrast that with the time a different, visibly frustrated dentist dripped his forehead sweat into my eyeball while working on what I think was the exact same corner of my mouth (I am not joking, a hygienist had to come wipe him down, and he never even apologized or acknowledged that it happened). Dr J gives the impression of a person who doesn't even HAVE sweat. Like what would she need it for? She's way too collected to ever actually break a sweat. 3. You have her full and undivided attention throughout your entire appointment. She does not have a hygienist. (Her receptionist acts as one when she needs a 2nd pair of hands, but only then.) She's not skipping around checking on other patients while somebody else polishes your teeth; she does every little thing from start to finish. Nothing, I mean nothing, slips through the cracks in her office because she is personally handling every detail of your dental care. And she takes her time, so I never ever feel rushed or like she's got something more important coming up. At the same time, I rarely see other patients in the waiting room because she usually finishes early. I wish my other doctors operated like this. 4. She also happens to be a cool person who has lots of interesting hobbies. For example the photography in her office is her own, from her travels. So she's an interesting person to chat with, too, which makes the whole appointment go even faster. So yes, I do love my dentist even though a lot of people think that's weird. She's really really good at her job and worth the trip downtown. read more

Dr Johnson has been my dentist for 8 years. She is excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend her. I've had cavities filled, x-rays, cleanings and advice for aesthetics (teeth whitening and orthodontics). A decade since my last review and Dr. Johnson and Saliou are still taking great care of me. Not much has changed since I started seeing her in 2003: Dr. Johnson still does all of the work herself, and she strives for perfection. I can't recommend her enough. read more

This is to add to my review above from 06/05/2012 I did not want people to get the wrong impression of Dr Johnson. When I used the term " Old School" I was not intended to convey that she was old fashioned, more that she supplies the type of care, service and committment to your well being that we don't see anymore! I was sad to leave my dentist in Columbia Heights when my insurance changed, butt now I'm glad I did. Dr. Johnson is the best dentist I've ever been to. I have some periodontal issues, so she referred me to someone, but in the meantime she did a great job cleaning and repairing an old filling. From the minute i walked in I felt like a valued patient. Her assistant shook my hand and introduced himself, and since I was early to my appointment, she got right to me. I've never met such a polite doctor. Dr. Johnson, whom I have been seeing for 15+ yrs now, is unquestionably the best dentist to have cared for me in my 70+ years of seeing dentists in a variety of international situations. She is competent, thorough, gentle and affable. Always transparent, she has no hesitation in discussing my dental problems and procedures with me. I went to the same dentist for 20 years when they moved their office to Reston. Luckily I found Dr. Johnson. What can i say, I am so impressed. The office is spotless and professional, Dr. Johnson gave me a thorough check up before cleaning and polishing my teeth. Dr. Johnson is a wonderful dentist--the best I've ever had. She is very professional, calming, reassuring, patient, personable, and knowledgeable. She is also very prompt--over the course of 5+ years, I have never waited at an appointment for more than a few minutes. She has done regular cleanings, x-rays, filled cavities, and fitted a bite guard. She does not use a hygienist (new to me), which is nice because she spends the entire appointment with you. I had several bad experiences before finding her, and one of the more annoying things I had found before her were dentists always trying to sell cosmetic dentistry services. It's hard to find good dentists in DC, so I was bummed when we switched insurance and I had to choose a new one. And now I'm extra glad I found Dr.Johnson! She has a professional, detailed manner and modern equipment. She walked me through my x-rays and pointed out everything she was scanning for. Then she told me everything she was going to do in detail before she did it. I'd never had ultrasonic cleaning before--so much better than the usual scrape scrape scrape.
