Stop & Shop Supermarket - Bought this sandwich at Canaan S&S. Ok, not great. Not up to par with sandwiches from other S&S, won't be buying one here again.

The store is often out of advertised items…read more The produce (fruits and vegetables) section is abysmal with many empty cases, and the items that are there are oftentimes wilted and moldy. The fresh fish case, which used to include three separate sections, is now down to one section. When we were in earlier this week (02/02) there was one (just one) tuna steak and some farm-raised salmon -- no other fish. The side case, which holds the smoked salmon and other packaged items was barely refrigerated. On a prior visit (01/28) the fat-free milk available had "best before" dates of 01/22 and 01/25. Doesn't anyone check the sell by dates on fresh milk? While they have improved some of the lighting and the signage for the aisles over the past six months or so, the store is still regularly dirty and the layout is very poor. There are "pop up" manufacturers' merchandising displays blocking items on the shelves. Last month, one of these flimsy cardboard (and top-heavy) merchandising racks toppled over with its items strewn all over the floor. Other times, we have looked online ("browse aisles") to make sure an item was in stock as well as its location within the store before visiting -- only to find upon our arrival that not only is the item not at this store, but that you are no longer carrying it. When we showed the online listing to one of the store's employees they merely shrugged. Also, twice in the past few months we "clipped" online coupons and added them to our Go account, purchased the items, and later looked over our receipt only to find that the discount was not applied. There is never any more than two (2) manned checkout lanes opened at a time and the self-checkout terminals are antiquated, making it virtually impossible to have a smooth, uninterrupted checkout experience without the need for someone to come to "unlock" the terminal, review your last scanned item, and check the bag staging area. Absolutely maddening. Now we understand that on any given day there might be an issue or an inconvenience we would need to deal with -- a late stock delivery, a shortage of employees due to sickness etc.; however, at this location the issues are ubiquitous and systemic and store-wide (not relegated to one department or offering).

Further, the required account costs $39 per month, automatically deducted from your account. The fact that the company is conducted by a third-party survey company makes me very concerned about the sharing of any personal information. THE SURVEY APPEARS TO BE A COMPANY-RUN SCAM!

It was disaster at first bite, the bread was stale and saturated with oil and some kind of orange colored sause. The Italian combo was so salty and oily We had to throw it out. This wonderful little grocery / cafe soft opened three months ago in January -- and I'm furious…read morewith myself for driving by it four times a weekend for so long without checking it out! Located at the funny intersection of CT-4 and CT-7 (where from certain directions you have to craaaaaaanne your neck to see if there's oncoming traffic) and just a short drive away from Mohawk Mountain, this bright, clean newcomer is small, but absolutely chock full of wonders. What we tried of the menu was truly excellent and it makes me wonder who is hiding out in the kitchen, here. Whoever it is has mad skills.* - The chicken, white bean and kale soup ($8) was clearly made from scratch, with care, the broth clean, rich, and flavorful. - Thai steak salad (grilled skirt, spicy aromatic herbs, parched rice, tangy dressing; $12) had no business being this good given that it's from a tiny general store in a tiny town in CT. This Isaan-style classic was surprisingly legit, pungent with fish sauce, packed full of lemongrass, lime juice, mint, and other herbs. It wasn't Isaan spicy (which quite literally makes me cry... but happy tears), but it was spicy. The steak was perfectly tender / chewy, sliced a little more thickly than I personally prefer for this preparation -- but of course that's a matter of preference. I would've loved to have had this with sticky rice. (I noticed after the fact that you can get a side of rice for $2. Next time!) - A hazelnut tiramisu tart ($7) had a nice, crisp crust; coffee-laced cream; possibly marzipan as part of the filling; and crisp hazelnuts on top. The adults thought it was lovely, but the kids are still extremely partial to the baked goods at Wilson's in nearby Kent. The produce in the case (lettuce and other greens, winter root vegetables like radishes, turnips, and sweet potatoes) were very fresh, gorgeous to behold. Pricing was reasonable, e.g. what you'd pay at a farm stand or farmer's market, though of course more than what you'd pay at a grocery chain. There were lovely looking cheeses and butters in the fridge, too, Ronnybrook Farm yogurt, dried chilis, spices, tea and coffee, maple syrup, and even ceramics made by a local artist alongside a few household contraptions. The staff were REALLY nice (and very fashionable, I should add) and there are two clean, all-gender bathrooms -- pretty impressive for such a small place. There are just a few tables set up for eating in, and a counter with bar stools in a side room -- but when the weather warms, we'll enjoy taking this beautiful food to the picnic tables at Kent Falls. * I'll answer my own question. Based on my shameless Google stalking, it looks like the chefs are Tyler Forve, who per this website (https://www.cornwallmarket.com/), trained under several "Michelin level chefs in the San Francisco Bay area" and CIA-trained sous chef Emma Terhaar (https://lakevillejournal.com/country-market-reopens-with-fresh-take-on-local-food). Chef Terhaar is also a food writer with some strong thoughts on burgers: https://thetakeout.com/author/emmaterhaar.

To save a few dollars, we typically purchase widely-available staples/packaged goods at the Big Y next door, then head over to Guido's for specialty items only. We are not particular fans of the cafe items, however, which we've tried when we wanted to eat breakfast before shopping - wrapped breakfast sandwiches in the cafe steamtable have been greasy or generally odd-tasting (I'm looking at you, weird crumbly breakfast biscuit), and the few times we've ordered milk-based hot coffee drinks, they've been burned. Moving forward, we'll skip the cafe when we shop. Though the parking lot in the GB location is MUCH more manageable than the crazy parking lot at the Lenox location - which makes it worth the drive to GB alone...

Wine and liquor selection is excellent and while the prices are higher than those in most supermarkets, the quality and choice are worth it.
