Basically, trying to go after a light stop or climb a hill was painstakingly slow and dangerous. So we stopped at the first service center we could find. About 45 minutes later, transmission fluid was poured in, a part replaced, and we were out the door for $90. Hourly rate is $60 and we were only charged for 30 minutes so I am appreciative that we appeared to be getting a good deal. Thankfully we made it home but the check engine light was still on when we pulled away from the center. Not sure if it's because they didn't know how to turn it off or if the repair that was done wasn't enough to turn the light off, but I am glad we didn't have to spend a night and were able to get the car fixed right away.
