I ordered the kefta entree that comes with delicious fragrant saffron rice, hummus, salad - the works. Easily one of the most delicious plates of food available in Bay Ridge. The lamb kefta sandwich? One of my favorite places to eat in Bay Ridge. My favorite is their Al-Sham Mixed Grill (#26) to make it to order so it can take about 25-30min. If you want to a little bit of everything that's the entree to order. It also comes with salad and rice or French fries. I recommend getting their rice. It's delicious. Bay Ridge is well know for several great middle eastern restaurants and food trucks I went with my standard falafel sandwich and unfortunately it fell short The sandwich was dry although the falafel was fried fresh. The sandwich was more of a wrap with a small amount of falafel some tomato and very little tahini. The pickled vegetables on the side was a nice touch. The food was medium. If that was all maybe I would let it slide. The problem is their lack of honesty. They added 18% service fee to the bill. They also had the nerve to put 18% tip suggestions on top of the 18% service fee. Meaning they suggest a 36% tip. The service was poor, unfriendly, they did not deserve one cent. They claimed the initial 18% is compulsory. I didnt argue. It didnt end there they also added 3% because I paid by card. I enjoy visiting Al Sham, especially at the end of a long day when I'm tired and hungry and don't want to cook. Their food is quite good and the people are usually upbeat and friendly. Today, though, I have to admit to being disappointed. Not with the food - it was as good as always - rather, with the lengthy wait and with what appeared to be poor organization and lack of urgency on the part of the folks behind the counter. Specifically, I waited nearly 40 minutes for a simple chicken shawarma sandwich with fries - their go-to combo. During my wait, I saw orders come in from online that seemed to be put ahead of mine, I saw the lone cook talking and joking with other workers while working at a fraction the pace of the 2-3 guys I normally see behind the counter, and I saw a number of other customers come in, pick up their internet or phoned-in orders, and leave again. I was on the verge of telling them to cancel my order - when it finally was my turn. Guys - I like your food, you're nice people, and the girl at the register has what is quite possibly the loveliest smile in Bay Ridge. If they want to stay in business they need to not only read the reviews, they need to change. "Customer Perception is Reality". I want to be fair, I told the owner Mohammed I'm telling you these things to help you not hurt you. The common problem or perception is they are not professional, there is poor service and sometimes perceived as rude. The bad reviews show the customers are hostile against the restaurant. That means they won't only not go there, they will bad mouth the place. As an owner you need repeat customers and new customers. The only way to do that is to listen and change. One response I saw was an excuse that they are busy. Let me help. PRO'S: The food I had was a 5. Great tasting food, the flavor of the shawarma sandwiches is what is keeping them above water. Convenient location. Digital signage. CON'S: LONG WAIT TIME FOR FOOD. Add more staff if 6 or 7 people are not enough then add more whatever it takes. SUGGESTION! Get rid of your sit down tables! She took zero initiative to help in any way. Clean the tables, refill the plastic utensils( I had to ask for them). DO SOMETHING! This type of behavior is repeated in all the negative reviews. Finally.... THEY ONLY TAKE CASH??? Really??? Who carries cash today??? Or... what are the hiding??? In conclusion..... 1. They need to have outstanding service to compliment the food. One does not work without the other. I can go to a dozen other places in the neighborhood with better service and comparable food. 2. would only order take out and order 30 minutes ahead. 3. I want to be as respectful as respectful as possible, but the food was just not good. The chef was rotating between cooking and cleaning the bathroom. I came in here as there is always a long line (when I look in), which leads me to believe the food must be great. I went in one night and ordered a mixed platter. I was one of the first to order and after 20 minutes about 10 more people came in and ordered. And I was still waiting for my food to go. Then I realized why I always see so many people in there, it's because it's a slow process to get your food. When you first go in and there are lots of people waiting around, it's hard to figure out where there is a line to order your food. Also the staff puts the food order in a notebook and everyone chips in to help with an order, except that they don't know who the order is for. It wasn't until I went up to one of the guys packing up the food and asked where my food was , was when they checked what I ordered and what my name was. When they found it it was a mixed platter , they just gave me the one that they were working on. I have to say , after that experience, I may just want to call in and come by 30 minutes later... Food wise, the meat was seasoned well and cooked to perfection.
