Forcing myself to try a different food cart, since I come to Cartlandia specifically for The Best Taste of India and 6 Tusks, I decided to give Shawarma Express a try because I love Mediterranean food. The Beef Shawarma was moist, flavorful and plentiful! I couldn't believe how much meat they included. Served with a fresh pita, delicious hummus, rice, Tzatziki sauce and a Dolma, it was enough for two meals. I'd definitely come back. $5 lamb gyro!!! Okay, so I was fooled. There was a bunch of people just loitering outside this food cart so I thought damn, must be good. But I found out it was actually for the crepe spot next door. I already decided I wanted a gyro so I proceeded to order. The lamb gyro was really delicious! The gyro wasn't dry and the veggies were fresh. The hot sauce isn't too spicy, but adds a nice flavor to the gyro. It won't leave you super full, but it's definitely worth the $5. I wish there was food carts like these in LA. read more

Meeting up with a friend at Cartlandia on a rainy afternoon led me to Shawarma Express for a falafel gyro. What I got was a huge pita literally stuffed full of falafel, lettuce, and cucumbers in yummy tzatziki sauce. Always a favorite of mine, falafel gyros at Shawarma Express in Cartlandia are a trusty go-to, always consistently good. The staff were helpful, the food was tasty and portion was beyond big - but I ate it all! Affordable quick cheap eats! We wanted a late dinner after an evening of bar hopping. We opted for some shawarma from this food truck. I had the lamb gyro because I saw that it was a decent size despite being one of the cheapest menu options. It costed only $5 and was very big! Definitely filled me up easily. The white sauce was what made the dish yummy. Make sure to ask for a lot of white sauce because they only distributed at the top and the bottom was so dry. The hot sauce was good but not that super spicy though. Overall, the food was good but nothing amazing. Service could be better though. It took us 30 minutes to get our order because there was only 1 guy running the show at 9pm on a Friday night. He also was not attentive because he messed up our order. Huge portions! Definitely was very hungry and this hit the spot. I got the lamb gyro which was bursting with flavor and the sweet potato fries were perfection-- both are HUGE. Got two chicken sajs (#4) and a side order of falafel. Main complaint is that their portions are small; I get much thicker wraps from the food carts in downtown Portland. Very tasty & affordable. A new cart to Cartlandia. There are many options. I got the beef & chicken combo. Very good & filling. The only thing I didn't like was the beef. It had too much filler. No matter if I eat there or have it delivered, its always consistently delicious! I'm especially impressed by his wrapping and securement methods when the food is going to be delivered. Its very expertly packed with both a plate and ample aluminum foil to trap the heat in without being "sweaty" inside. Now to the food! Been at this cart yesterday and apparently there was no internet, so the guy at the cart couldn't use the Credit card machine and instead of asking for cash (which I had), he plainly and bluntly denied to sell any food. When I enquired why he wouldn't take cash and ask for it instead, he was like I don't have time for it, I am busy (when there was no other customer at the cart and I was the only one). That was one of the rudest answers and attitude I have seen at a food cart so far. This guy had a very rude attitude from the beginning, not sure if he is like that with all the customers or certain ethnicities. Its just not about the Food, Manners and Hospitality matters a lot in a Restaurant business, definitely wouldn't recommend this Food cart or there food to anyone after this experience. read more

This was one of my first pod stops during my trip to Portland & I must say the food I had was absolutely delicious. I ordered a chicken kabob plate which includes some of the best basmati rice, nicely spiced chicken, salad, hummus, yogurt and bread. The guy even through in a piece of Baklava for me:) It was all surprisingly only $8 even. I could never find anything priced this low in California! Portions were big. Shared some with my friends and they were all shocked at how good everything tasted! I'm a big lover of sauces and hummus and chicken, which is on most of the menu. I have been here many times and have loved it each time. Today I came and ordered a number 11. Combo saj (lamb, beef and chicken) The person working told me NO BEEF! okay lamb and chicken is fine! Got my order and all the meat was so minced I didn't know what was what. There was no sauce on it and it had 2 tomatoes and 4 shreds of lettuce and it was no bigger than a taquito. Do not go here when the old man with white hair is working. He has no clue what he's doing!! And he even charged me .50 for using my card even tho my total was 16.00. A lot of people raved about how great the food is here, it was decent, I got the lamb gyro, it was a sizeable portion but I didn't find it to be as extraordinary as people talked it up to be. I'll stick to Moonlight over at the cart pod on Harvey Milk, the hummus there is the best I've ever eaten. And the older man that owns that ca Shawarma Express also charges that B.S. fee to use your credit or debit card, I think it was 75 cents? It's really terrible business, you have to charge your customers extra to accept a certain form of payment? It's not like I'm using Diner's Club or even AMEX, it's a Visa. If you can't afford to accept Visa cards, then don't. Be cash only. Not only do they want to avoid paying the merchant fees that every other business in the world has to, they want to turn a profit on it. read more

I don't understand the disparity in my experiences here. Last week I had a lamb gyro that was absolutely fantastic! The hummus and baklava were very good. Tonight I ordered a lamb gyro and chicken kebab plate. None of this food is good. The pita was broken in a few places and the foil wrapper was dripping with grease. It made a horrible mess at my desk when I set the bag down. The chicken is bland. There is a very small amount of hummus and tzatziki in the plate. This is just no good. I'm torn. My food was so good the other day, and I want to continue getting food here! But, I usually order when I'm at work, not in person, so I cannot really deal with a dissatisfying experience except to leave a review. I don't have enough time on my meal break to find alternate food if my order isn't good. I probably won't take another chance on this place. read more

Went here with some buddies and we ordered a big bag of food. We also sat next to some people who were downing their sandwiches. The sandwiches and sauces are wonderful! The Saj (sort of like a tortilla) is a long and narrow sandwich and is quite a different experience compared to the traditional pita. We had a mix, and I think that the pita is the way to go. The Saj was worth trying but I think I would stick with Pita. The plates are pretty big and offer a good amount for the price. They have kebab, and shaved meat in beef, lamb, chicken and a mix of lamb and chicken. The plate was also very good. The sauces are available to customers and while I would not go hog wild it was nice to have some sauce to dip the sweet potato fries in. I am a huge fan of the Hot sauce labeled "Mixed" which was a mix of the hot sauce and the garlic sauce I think, but the owner said it was a "secret" recipe. Whatever the secret it was so good I would buy a bucket of the stuff. read more

What a pleasant surprise to stumble upon such amazing food. My Wife and I stopped at Cartlandia for dinner unsure about what we wanted to eat. Our daughter got noodles from another cart and we finally decided to get a gyro plate as well as a wrap. The plate and wrap was absolutely huge. Neither of us were able to finish our meals, but we certainly tried. The flavor of the lamb and beef were great. Not salty at all. The veggies were fresh, the sauces were all full of flavor, and the naan was light. Overall I would eat here again. I would have given another star, but not all of our experience was positive. The gentleman serving us was less than friendly though the owner later was more approachable. If I could have given 4.5 stars I would have. Definitely worth the time. read more

I've always loved this place but today I ordered a double lamb gyro and there was just soooooo much tzaziki sauce in the sandwich that the pita was super soggy and I couldn't find much of the lamb at all, even after paying for double. Well, I'm giving this one star because Yelp won't let me give it 0, was talking politely to the guy about what we wanted to order now that he was out of lamb because his day was "so busy" although, now I can't understand why anyone would want to come. The guy we spoke to was arrogant and not communicative at all, and in fact when he finally gave us our food, we'd already swiped our card without him telling us to, so we began to walk away and he goes "Are you gonna pay me for that?" and we were like "umm, we did?" and he was like "no. i have to do it." so honestly he could've communicated WAY better. Worst Lebanese/Mediterranean food I have ever had. The hummus was liquidy and the Taziki had so many big chunks of cucumber that you couldn't even get to the sauce. The falafel we're not in balls they were in flat circular disk with a hole in the middle. The only thing that had any flavor was the rice and that's because it has spices in it. I liked the addition of the pickles for a really deep flavor in the saj. Plus, the price was just right. Can't say I experienced any of the service issues that anyone else did. The turquoise building was bold, but so were the words that came out of the owners mouth.
