    Really friendly staff.

I was in Ottawa for work and my friend HIGHLY recommended I change out Shawarma King. Not only was I excited by the recommendation, but I was also excited to try out the food! I've been on a KETO diet for months, and this sort of menu can work really well for my needs. When I came in, I asked to order off menu and just get a sampler of ALL THE MEATS. They looked at me a little crazy and then said "sure, let's do this." I took a seat and soaked up all of the smells while they cut and trimmed and grilled and fried several different meats for me to sample. They also put together a vegetable tray for me and man alive, everything was so super delicious and fresh. If I had access to this knd of food all of the time, I would be a very happy man. Those of you who live in Ottawa should consider yourselves very lucky.

Ottawa is full of shawarma places, so I've had a lot of shawarma. I would say that Shawarma's King has really good shawarma, but the potatoes and rice are just ok, and the place itself is a little grungy, in my opinion. Service was good. The younger guys were much nicer to me than the old guy, but the old guy was still ok. I've only had the beef shawarma here, not the chicken. The beef is tasty and well seasoned. It's not too chewy. They are very generous with the meat. You get a lot. The older guy is also very generous with the garlic sauce. He put like 4 tablespoons of garlic sauce into my large shawarma. Way too much for my liking, but he already did it before I could stop him. Be forewarned if you don't want to smell like a walking bulb of garlic for a week! I didn't really like the potatoes here because they were not crispy. They looked good, but were kind of soggy and starchy tasting. The yellow rice was ok. It was very fragrant from all the spices (smelled like cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc.), but I didn't feel like it was great. The baklava there is ok. Tastes like baklava you get at grocery stores. Not as good as at a bakery. Combo 5 is great for sharing. It's an extra large shawarma sandwich, a side of potatoes or rice, a piece of baklava and a can of pop for $15.49. The extra large is about a foot long. The interior I found to be somewhat grungy and rundown looking. Lots of street parking on nearby streets.

I stopped by there around 10:30 pm and ordered "Combo 1" which includes a sandwich, drink and side of garlic potatoes for 8.99. My potatoes were not fresh, but I guess that is to be expected at the time that I went. The garlic paste had good flavour, but a little too runny in my opinion. The sandwhich tasted good, but completely fell apart more and more with each bite. I couldnt eat the last bit because it was just all over the place. The store itself could be cleaner. The display shelves are dusty and theres a fridge display beside the cash with candy bars just thrown in. It makes the store look very messy. The staff were friendly, but the washroom had no soap or paper towels. The tables were also not wiped down even though there were not too many people in the place. As far as a restaurant goes, I wouldn't classify this place as one - its more what you'd expect from a food truck. My experience was less than average.

The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. I usually get a latte there but decided on a regular one, that was a mistake. Their food did taste good, and their chutney was still delicious but the service was a bit gruff. They weren't rude by any means but I was ignored for 10 mins just waiting to ask for a takeout box. I could tell he was a bit overwhelmed and probably having an off morning, so I didn't take it personally. But when I'm paying $30 for one breakfast bowl and a coffee, I'd expect more than 2 cherry tomatoes cut in half and a few mushrooms in it. The food is delicious but you're definitely overpaying and 50/50 on the coffee lol

All the nearby spots are reserved for the apartment dwellers in the building. Ordered a Huevo Ranchero ($16) - which came with scrambled eggs two corn tortillas with salsa, cheese, sour cream and a side order of fries. The eggs could have used some seasoning even with salsa it needed something extra A Vegan Breakfast Bowl ($14) - a mixture of tofu, spinach, mushrooms and tomato chutney - which somehow tasted to all 4 of us like onion chutney. The vegetables done good, but tofu again had just no flavour. Tofu had a spice rub all over, but it tasted like plain tofu. The Bacun strips were rice paper rolls with some attempted flavours but none came through. And two Vegan Bennies ($16) - a super grainy slice of bread topped with the same tofu, green onions, Bacun and some red pepper strips (NOT Coulis as described in the menu). If some person was having a tofu dish for the first time I think they would describe tofu as no flavour at all. We vegans know that you can do amazing things with Tofu. The home fries in the above dishes was the best - now that we could give 5 out 5. All of us had to go and get Sriracha and Ketchup from the counter to rescue the dishes. Coffee was too weak as well. When you go in and order on the counter and you get food delivered to your table. Should the restaurant still offer to tip on the machine BEFORE even we were served? The order did take a long time, the table not clean when we sat, no condiments on the table and coffee refills slow. An extra star for giving tons of vegan options
