Groceries without breaking the bank in Boston; who would have imagined? Shaw's has an excellent location in East Boston, just a short walk from Airport or Maverick T stops. This grocery store has plenty of deals every week and an app that contains coupons to use. They have great rotisserie chickens, a variety of fresh produce, and a very well stocked meat and seafood case. Aside from their selection of groceries, they do a very good job of keeping the store clean. However Shaw's is a bit outdated and can be busy at times, especially on the weekends. It's well organized which is useful if you're in a rush or just looking for one specific item. The employees are helpful and there is a self checkout option as well. They even have "monopoly" tickets that can be earned with the purchase of specific items to potentially win prizes. Overall, Shaw's is a pretty decent place to get your groceries. read more

This is the absolute worst supermarket I've ever been to in my life. Produce selection is BAD. Many of the fruits are over ripened, an on the border of rotting. Especially the "organic" selection, which obviously doesn't sell in this lower income market. All the organic produce is ALWAYS soft and I swear I can identify particular fruits and veggies that have been there for weeks. This is the only real grocery store in East Boston...and they know it, and take full advantage of it to rip customers off. The prices are outrageous, they are always understaffed, the selection is terrible... we only go there when we have to, otherwise, its completely worth it to pay the peapod delivery fee. read more

My wallet still thinks this store is a Whole Foods. Everything in the place is priced at a Whole Foods level or better. The problem is that the quality is total crap. The lines at the checkout are outrageous. They have these signs at every register that mention how there are never more than 3 people in line at Shaw's. It's like a slap in the face. I wish I could find a line with only 3 people. It would be the shortest one. The staff is a mixed bag. There are some who try really hard and really do their jobs well. I love this grocery store! The hot bar and salad bar are great and actual fairly reasonable. I even got my thanksgiving catered by shaws last year and it came out delicious. Most of the people who work here are also pretty friendly and usually pretty helpful. read more

I got lost my and ended up in front of Shaws in east Boston. I love grocery shopping so I went in to check it out. I am not very familiar with Boston neighborhoods but as soon as I started walking into the store I regretted it. The neighborhood seemed ghetto. Inside the store did not seem very nice either. It was nowhere near as nice as their sister store star market. I quickly looked around and found a bag of peanut butter cookies from their bakery. I got out of there fast because I did not want to walk in that parking lot at night. I don't know if they are different but I find star market a million times better than Shaws, especially the east Boston store. read more

Used to go here all the time as a kid. The quality of the food is good to great, but the prices are just outrageous. It's like shopping at Trade Joe's or Whole Foods, but with slightly lesser quality of products (and selection). Only really good thing I would recommend Shaw's specifically for is their Italian bread, just excellent. Everything else you can get somewhere else for cheaper. read more

Although the recent interior renovation of the East Boston Shaw's has improved the shopping experience, I continue to be frustrated with the numerous expired products. I don't buy the rotisserie chicken unless I see if come out of the oven. It often sits under the heat lamps for 5+ hours in violation of ServSafe guidelines and is likely loaded with bacteria. I have brought it to the attention of the food workers and also emailed the company directly and received no response. And though there are many great workers here, I still experience bad customer service. Today I asked a man at the fish/meat counter where the frozen fish products had been moved to and he said I should check the frozen aisles as they might be there. He was new and didn't know. Whatever happened to offering to check with someone to get the answer? Instead I had to search two aisles of frozen foods and another frozen case. Fish was not listed on the aisle signage. I want to support this local store but they are making it more difficult daily. Luckily, Market Basket, Whole Foods, and Stop and Shop are a short drive away... read more

I go to this store every other week to stock a kitchen (not my own), and it has gotten better with time. They now seem to keep more registers open, have baggers handy, and the deli service has improved drastically. Some good employees here that indeed work hard and provide quality service. I pretty much love/hate this Shaws. It's convenient in location, but that's about it. We are consistently overcharged (one visit we were overcharged by $7). I'm not kidding, every.single.time have to go to customer service for a refund because they've charged us too much. The deli is NASTY. They let the meats/cheeses sit out and on a recent trip, there were flies everywhere. This Shaws is absolutely disgusting and EXTREMELEY overpriced. They take advantage of the fact that they are the only grocery store in East Boston and the only one readily available to the residents of East Boston. To give an Example: Edy's half gallon of ice cream at East Boston Shaws 5.99! The competetors price is 2.99! I have lived in East Boston for 8 years and while I shop here due to mere convenience somtimes (I live across the street) I hate giving them a CENT of my money. Market Basket over in Chelsea is clean, the employees are always helpful and the prices are amazing. It is always crowded though but that is because they really do it right. Stop and Shop in Revere is all right, they have a good healthfood isle and the store is clean. Shaws is missing out on a lot of local customers due to its high prices and low standards. read more

I've lived in East Boston close to 20 years and have gone into Shaws only about a dozen times. I've had it with Shaws. Their aisles are set up in an impractical way the items that you think would be next to each other are in completely different aisles. for example today I went in looking for some jelly and for the life of me I could not find it even next to the peanut butter there was nothing.I looked at the aisle descriptors on top of each aisle and there was nothing useful . They have about 20 lanes to cash out customers they always have like two open and they always have a huge lines. something that should take only 10 minutes to go in and grab becomes a 30 minute ordeal.I find it so much easier to drive to Market Basket in Chelsea look for what I need, wait in line, pay, and I'll still be back home earlier than I would've if I would've gone to Shaws.East Boston is about 75% Hispanic yet Shaws has failed to provide provide imported products to serve the demographics of their area something that Market Basket has mastered. Though they don't provide the specialty products for the customers in the area they seem to have an entire Aisle just for dogs and cats. I wouldn't mind the fact that everything in Shaws is about 25% more expensive than in Market Basket if they could just make everything easier and faster to get but it's something that they don't seem to understand. Though this is a negative review management should consider it a viable reason as to why they don't get as many customers as Market Basket they really need to get their head out of their ass because they are losing many customers because of their decisions it just doesn't make sense. read more

I'm almost 50 years old and have lived all over the country. I have NEVER been as creeped out by a store as I am by the Shaws in East Boston. The produce is rarely fresh. If it appears fresh it is rotten within a day. SOME of the staff acts as if they hate their job and hate helping customers. The management is incredibly unprofessional. They create a vibe that makes people want to drive across the bridge to Market Basket (which most do). I live near Shaws and go there for convenience. When I go to Market Basket, our shopping experience is awesome. I feel like my money is given to a store that appreciates its customers. We need a Market Basket in East Boston. Shaw's has no accountability and it shows. The meat is cheap, but, many people wanted the .99 chicken breasts advertised for New Years. I was there on New years Eve and they were "out." There was a line of people wanting the chicken. The next day I went back, they were out again. It's this type of thing that's constant and makes shopping there an unpleasant experience.
