It was bustling with folks, which is always a great sign. I got some dates, bananas & blood grapefruits (did I just make a new variety of grapefruit up?) It all come to less then €5... The man in front of me got some spuds and it came to 50c, he was shocked at the cheapness. There is a lovely touch at the front door, a local has print-outs of recipes and the seasonal veg/fruit that go with it. Nicky the owner allows her to display them, it really in keeps with the local feel of the spot.

I was absolutely astonish by the price of the avocados at 0.99 cent each, this is the best price for the quality you will get, I can guarantee that the same avocado costs up to €1.60 to €1.70 which is an awful lot of a difference, and like this example I could give you many more. Nicky (the owner) appeared to talk to me and explain a bit about the shop and the offers he has and he kindly let me take a photo of the shop. This kind of shops you won't find them anymore and they are such a treat for the area and the locals. There you will select fresh fruit and vegetables with the help of nice people behind the counter who will give you a smile and good service, not like a big super market where you will be wondering about and finding out where to weight your items. We (we all do) are responsible for letting go small places like this instead of supporting the small companies which have a lot more to offer than the big monsters who won't even care what they are selling to you or what kind of food you cook and eat. We were running out of time on our hunt to find them when I realized, 'I've got my trusty guidebook!!' And that's how we ended up here. It was 12 Euros for 6 oysters and a glass of wine. Since there were four of us, the lady was nice enough to give us 4 cups of wine (yes, plastic cups - it's a farmer's market, what do you expect!) They even threw in an extra oyster! SO FRESH! SO BIG! (cue that's-what-she-said joke). Compared to NYC oysters, these babies looked like they were on steroids! They also have this dipping sauce (had onions and was really vinegar-y, but good. But if you don't like the sour, you should just take the oyster straight.) Didn't eat anything else from other stands because we just had lunch. However, I believe they had shish kebabs, crepes, and bread. Oh and FYI - Sheridans Cheesemongers was there (saw this place on Anthony Bourdain when he went to Dublin so thought this might be worth mentioning). Definitely check out this farmer's market!

Having read a bit about the market online I brought my shopping bag with me so I could thrown in a few goodies. They had a bike rack inside the market and I was welcomed by Bríd who runs the market. She was so friendlly to me and very informative on all the stalls and products on sale in the market and then let me get on with exploring. The array of stalls is excellent and this market seems to have the right balance between a place to do your shopping and also a place to enjoy an afternoon browsing. I purchased a sholuder of Lamb from a farmer based near Oldcastle in Co. Meath. I bought some fresh veg which were excellent value. I bought some sea bass from a fishmonger from Galway and I bought a tub of the curry Dhanzak Curry sauce which even has the Weight Watchers points marked out for you. Dhanzak is a healthy 2 point. All of the stalls had informative friendly and passionate people working behind them who allowed you to browse without being anyway pushy. After my shopping I then enjoyed some homemade soup with some lovely bread for 2 euro 50 and a gorgeous cup of coffee for 2 euro. Great value, and a huge library of magazines and books to browse as you enjoy your coffee. They also sell cakes, and a main meal and a selection of teas. There was also a charity bookstall and the selected charity this week was Our Ladys Childrens Hospital. All in all a great Saturday afternoon well spent. I would highlly recommend anybody to check this market out. Oh the cycle back through the leave covered Griffith Ave. was gorgeous and reminded me of Boston this time last year. I think a few stalls weren't open when I visited, as it was much smaller than the listing on their website.It's a great place to go if you're in the area, but Temple Bar Market is probably better stocked otherwise.

But be careful of the merchants who insist on picking the fruit for you! I once came home with over 20 rotten bananas and several squashed kiwis. Even though I only paid something like 3 Euro, I was disappointed because I had to throw most of the fruit out. A friend of mine swears that the market's fishmonger is the best and told me to buy oysters from him so I guess there are good and bad stalls. Even if you don't actually need to buy anything, I suggest you saunter down this street. The funny things that I have overheard from these Dubs could fill the pages of a book.
