And wow, they truly do it right here. My hair qualified to be donated, which already made my day, and they even send it off for you. I was planning to schedule an appointment, but they were able to get me in right then. I felt incredibly lucky and honestly very grateful. Janka was my stylist and she is superb. I am always nervous cutting my hair since it only happens once every two to three years, but she walked me through exactly what she would do step by step. She is also a wonderful conversationalist and really puts you at ease. I felt comfortable the entire time. After the cut and style, I felt amazing, which is something I have not always felt after donating my hair at other salons. Some places struggle with short hair after donation, but they absolutely know what they are doing here. The owner was also incredibly kind and accommodating. Everything about this place feels warm. The front of the shop is filled with vintage and antique items and cute knickknacks you can browse, while the salon is in the back. Both spaces feel intentional and full of care. You can truly feel the love they put into this place. I would absolutely come back and highly recommend this salon to anyone who is nervous about donating their hair or just wants to find a place that genuinely cares.

For the price, speed, and attention to detail, I literally plan my trips to Philly around my hair schedule. To get in and out in around 90 minutes is something...I can't say I've had elsewhere. However, I was in town for only a couple days and needed to get a haircut and my undercut shaped up, so I called Modify. Neither Audrey nor Kat were available during the days I was in Philly, and the receptionist said she could book me with Shannon, which I figured would be fine, given that I had had good haircuts there before. Not the case. 1- I mentioned at the beginning of the appointment that I wanted to get a design shaved into my undercut in honor of my (recently deceased) father. She said okay, that'll be no problem--but then proceeded to buzz my undercut before asking about the design I was thinking of, which she then realized wasn't possible because the gradient in it needed longer hair than I had at that point. I sat down with plenty of it to work with and honestly, didn't even think about the gradient involved...but you're the hairdresser, you should be aware of those intricacies and you should be the one asking the client about it ahead of time! Needless to say, I was a little upset. 2-After the fiasco with the design...my undercut didn't even come out even. My family members and partner both asked me afterwards--is your undercut supposed to be uneven? The top half is longer than the bottom half, and I didn't ask for a fade or anything of the sort (see picture below). I could feel that it wasn't getting quite even at the top while she was using clippers, but assumed it'd be fine. 3- The haircut I got on the rest of my hair didn't come out even, either! Although I sometimes part my hair slightly asymmetrically, I've never had a problem like this before; my sister actually asked me, "Is this some kind of fashion statement?". One strand is visibly longer than the rest of my hair, like it was just missed. 4-Small thing, but I'm usually offered wine or beer when I walk in by Audrey or Kat--not this time. Lesson learned. Book with Audrey or Kat! Don't chance it on a different stylist.

I decided I wanted to get an ombre style color job a few weeks ago and don't trust myself DIY-ing it so I went to M's on the Square. The woman who greeted me (and did my hair) was very very nice the entire time, but I will say that the whole appointment felt rushed...she did the whole coloring in less than an hour and a half (I was told it should take 3 hours). The end result--my hair turned out TERRIBLY. It is not ombre AT. ALL. Not only is it not ombre, but it looks like a really bad highlighting job. My hair is dark brown naturally, and I'm left with random, very blonde highlights that are chunky and that are only on SOME tips of my hair. The top is all my natural brown (as it should be) and the bottom is PLATINUM BLONDE with absolutely no in-between, no transitioning color, no gradual change.I even noticed that some locks of hair go from dark brown to blonde BACK TO dark brown at the end...just one middle chunk of hair on the strands were highlighted! I've been wearing my hair in a ponytail ever since!!! I'm looking at other places to get it redone now and it's going to cost me over $120. Very very disappointed, to say the least. Maybe I should have just kept it simple!

Every time I make my way down to Northern Liberties to get my hair cut and colored, I leave so happy and thrilled with my new hair. I've done darker stretched root balayages as well as lighter balayages, with a tight root, which grow out very nicely and are low maintenance for busy (read lazy) ladies like myself. A lot of stylists say they know how to do a good balayage, but Ashley always does an amazing job (way better than some of the stylists my friends go to, but I won't name names, haha).
