She came up with vintage wavey look. I was hesitant to have curls because my hair tends to fall, but she assured me that she could make it stay, plus I loved the look she was going for, so I said yes... welp... she was right! I've gone to this salon on numerous occasions and am always happy. Only downside is that there seemed to be some turnover so I've ended up with a different stylist everytime. That being said, I was very happy with the results regardless. I went in recently to get a cut and a consultation on what to do with my color. They were more than happy to give me different options she thought would work with my natural color, texture, etc. I ended up doing ombre for the first time and I love how it turned out. Also, I usually find it hard to have a stylist cut my curly hair right the first time, and each stylist did a great job and exactly what I asked for. They were also very expressive about stopping by if I need any tweaks done after a few days of settling in with my new style. Their online appointment booking is super convenient and easy to use. I've sat on this review for a while, but I think I've settled on how I feel about Salon Blush. I made an appointment for a Saturday to get my hair cut and colored. When I showed up, they weren't ready for me. Apparently the person before me had wanted a cut and color, but they only wrote her down for a cut in their book. So, she was taking longer than expected. When my stylist finally came to get me I told her that I wanted a cut and ombre color. She was surprised, and said that I wasn't in the book for color. I told her that I was very explicit with whoever took my appointment, and clearly there was a precedent already set to show that whoever takes appointments doesn't actually write down what they're told. At any rate, the stylist was very nice. That's the best part of my review - the stylist was nice. The color job that was done to my hair was not good. Actually, it was terrible. I came in with several pictures of the ombre look that I was going for, and she really didn't pay much attention to them when I tried to show them to her. My hair now looks like I have highlights that have grown out. Honestly you can see every streak of color she put into my hair, and it looks like I've just neglected my roots. There is no one that I've spoken to who would ever guess that I asked for an ombre color job. Two last things - first, there was someone messing with the music in the salon. She kept turning it up and singing and laughing, completely unaware that all of the clients were looking at her side-eyed. Or, perhaps she was aware and just didn't care. Either way, it was beyond irritating. Second, the salon seemed dirty to me. It seemed like someone was trying to decorate with a vintage feel, but they ended up just getting stuff off the street or at thrift shops, and they didn't bother to refurbish them or clean them up, and the whole place just presented (to me) as cluttered and not up to snuff. It's unfortunate that I didn't have a good experience here, especially considering how close this is to my house. I had contemplated giving them a second chance, but every time I look in the mirror and see how silly my hair looks, I just get less able to give the benefit of the doubt. P.S. - they don't take credit/debit cards. That also seems ridiculous considering how much hair jobs tend to cost and what a card-culture we live in nowadays. read more

I'm not one for writing bad reviews, but I'm still mad and it's been several months since my last experience at Salon Blush. When I lived in Philadelphia - in the Fishtown hood - this was nearly a regular salon for me. My stylist was Jenny and she was awesome. She's apparently moved on since then. THEN - I moved away to Colorado, but started planning my wedding that will take place in New Jersey. I made an appointment at Salon Blush to have finger waves done - because they supposedly specialize in doing old school style hair AND I was assured that there was someone who knew how to do them well over the phone. Maybe it was my mistake for making the appointment too far in advance.... (not really)... I was surprised that I didn't receive a confirmation call or email a day before (because that's standard salon business practice). Instead, I landed in Philadelphia, picked up my rental car, and drove to Salon Blush. I was less than five minutes away when I received a phone call from them in which they told me that my stylist - who apparently is the only person at their salon who can do finger waves - had been out on maternity leave FOR TWO WEEKS. So.... if you're still following me on this.... I was enraged, of course. I tried really hard to hold it all in because I never want to be that person. (If you haven't waited tables for 15 years like I have, maybe you don't know what "that person" is, but I can assure you that I'm not a trouble-maker). I told them that I was literally about to walk in to the salon and they said, "Well, come in and we'll figure something out." The owner was arrogant and unapologetic at first. She insisted that another girl could do it - WHICH WAS THE OPPOSITE FROM THE TRUTH. The poor girl who tried to do my finger waves had a curling iron in one hand and the most confused expression on her face. I felt sorry for her. I tipped her very well even though it was clear to both of us that she had no idea what she was doing - and didn't even complete the job. The salon owner did my makeup and started to become more apologetic (sort of) once she realized that I'm not some crazy bridezilla or cracked out Fish person (which I'm sure is what she's used to). She did a decent job on makeup, but I left the salon crying and my fiance was really angry that they charged me for the makeup. At least they didn't charge me for the hair... A phone call that would have said, "Hey... we see that you have an appointment with so-and-so and she's out on maternity leave right now. Can we reschedule?" would have solved EVERYTHING. read more

I am sad to say I must rethink my opinion of Salon Blush. For the second time since I started going there my stylist has either flown the coop or been 86'd. Shortly after I became a patron at Blush I "liked" their fan page on the 'ole facebook. As a result I get messages that keep the customers up to date regarding SB goings-on. This last message regretfully informed me that my stylist was no longer with the salon. Ugh... In the year I've been going to Blush I tried 4 different stylists 2 were awesome and 2 were meh. The more recent "meh" completely butchered my short hair, I mean to say; it looks like a chuck of my hair is a 1/4"-1/2" shorter than all of the hair around said clump. The cut doesn't lay right and my hair line looks like she didn't even try to clean it up. I responded to the owners message with my own saying that I was sad to see yet another stylist move on from her shop and that I, sadly, had recently received an awful haircut at her salon and wasn't sure I was still interested in being a customer there. She responded very quickly but this was her response: "Thanks Im sorry to hear that, _______ is a great stylist and usually a large amount of short hair sorry you didnt like it. This is a complaint I normally dont hear, Take care." Obviously business is good or else she would have at least made a modicum of effort to keep my patronage. This place is adorable. I'm a Fishtown native and remember when the space used to be a creepy toy/drug store and what the girls at Blush have done to it is gorgeous. I love the supremely girlie colors and all the vintage furniture. They also have Ralph's barber shop next door if you're looking for something on the masculine side. The old sears catalogs from the year my grandmother was born on the coffee table was a nice touch. Alright, 3 generations of women in my family (me, my mom, and granny) all have had stellar service from Blush. This place is all ages, sexes, and styles. Jamie is a gem of a stylist i met at Shampoo Bar and have lost contact with but have found again at Blush. My mom's and grandmother's stylist was Bleu and he did wonders on their difficult to manage, wiry hair. My best friend hosted a part of my Bachelorette party here & everyone had a great time. We all got massages or facials and just hung out & enjoyed the ambiance. Kayleigh has been doing my hair since she started, and I am very happy. She *finally* helped me find a color that I can stick with for more than 4 weeks, and always gives me a nice style. I loved thia place the first time I went. I wanted vintage-style hair and I chose Blush because that's supposed to be what they do. My stylist was really nice and took a lot of time with me. I left happy and I gave her a huge tip (100%). So of course when it came time for another cut I set another appointment here. Well! What a different experience. I had the same stylist. She remembered me enough to tell me in a snarky way that I needed to come more often, but not enough to get my name right. She wizzed through my hair and didn't talk to me at all. I'm not a chit chatter, but stony silence felt a little odd. Nobody else was in the salon except another employee who washed her hair in the sink and a customer with foils in. They didn't talk either, and it felt a little Twilight Zoney ... Not good. Finally, my stylist chopped off a LOT more hair than I asked for. So, lessons learned: this place doesn't care about repeat business. Not even a huge tip helps. I also hesitated to even post this because the owner aggressively follows up on all feedback and pesters you to change anything negative. I have been a client of Salon Blush for several years now, so my comment is long overdue. Blush is my one-stop shop for everything I need regarding a salon and spa. I have seen several of the hair stylists over the years and have never been unhappy with the services. I currently see either Amanda or Sequoia for hair, both of whom are just stellar with scissors and know exactly how to pair colors to compliment my style. Two of the main reasons why I love these girls so much is because they take the time to listen to your ideas and they also educate you about how to style your hair. I find that so important because I know I'm going to look good when I leave the salon. The trick is being able to replicate that long after. I've also been to blush for facials and peels. I've had facials and peels elsewhere and they were ok - but there's a reason why Blush was voted as one of the best facials in Philadelphia. The owner, Alanna, takes a lot of pride in continuously educating herself in the best products out there - and if she can't find something she's happy with she will make it herself! I also find the atmosphere to be so relaxing and perfect for my taste. A new year's resolution of mine was to start taking better care of my skin and I decided the best way to do that was to get bi-monthly peels (and a massage here and there!) to not only have radiant skin but to also head off any pre-mature aging and damage. Let me tell you, I am very much looking forward to keeping this resolution! Blush is the type of business I want to have in my neighborhood. Yes, it's my favorite salon, but they also give back and have a positive presence in FIshtown/Kensington, something I admire tremendously in a small and independent business! read more

Ehh... I suppose you get what you pay for. I tried Salon Blush after my old salon blew me off because Blush is right near my home and it's only $30 for a cut. The stylist was very friendly and sweet, but the cut wasn't very good. It wasn't terrible, but it's kind of uneven. It's not noticeable to most people but it's noticeable to me, and as a paying customer, I want a GOOD cut. My stylist was pretty young and I'm willing to bet that she's just not that experienced. I don't want to judge the entire salon on one stylist, though. And at least the cut was cheap. read more

I went in to get my hair dyed by Sam and she did a great job. She somehow interpreted my ramblings and millions of pictures into more than I could have asked for. I have thin, DARK hair that is a pain to lighten, and she so wonderfully, without destroying my hair. I had her trim my hair as well, and she did so perfectly to showcase the few purple highlights that were throughout my red hair. I requested red, magenta, and purple in my hair. One of the other stylists was insisting not to use magenta in my hair cause that specific stylist hated it. I am very glad Sam stuck to her plan and gave me what I wanted, because I LOVE IT! My only notes to everyone is that: 1. I do not think they do confirmation calls, so just make sure you put the date and time in your calendar. I did not run into problems, but I know some people rely on those calls. 2. They are cash only. There are two small signs at the welcome desk, but no mention of it on their website. I know CC companies are terrible with their rates the charge small businesses, but I feel like if you have services that can add up to more than $150, you should be able to use your card. There is an ATM in the store, but you have to pay the fees, so just take out cash and be prepared. After reading some reviews, I think I need to get my self a skincare created by Alanna! read more

My hairstylist is Camille. She's a wonderful young lady. Very intuitive and listens. I walked into this salon and I was greeted with a warm welcome. I was early and sat on their comfy couch and looked and their wonderful books of work they created with other clients. Very nice books with good looking professional photo shots, and I enjoyed looking at the books while I was waiting to meet my new hairstylist. I came to this salon with hair issues to begin with from another salon that I shall not name. Camille took her time to care for my hair and understand what the heck this other lady did to my hair. She did her very best to repair my hair. She did an amazing job with my Keratin treatment, as well. All who come for the very first time, take time to get to know each other. Recently, I was a bridesmaid in a wedding and Salon Blush came to our hotel to do our hair and makeup. They spent a dedicated amount of time on each bridesmaid, and asked us exactly how we wanted to look. They were so accommodating! Each girl looked completely different, pending on our requests and their recommendations. I have been in three weddings over the last year and a half, and Salon Blush provided the best service, by far. They also had airbrush, which I was super stoked for. This has been my only experience with professional makeup where I didn't have an awful acne breakout the following week. And, I was apprehensive because airbrush tends to feel heavy and greasy on your skin. This was light as ever. And, most importantly, it lasted from 11am - 2am, withstanding a beautiful outdoor wedding of 85 degree heat (and humidity). read more

I want to love you, Salon Blush, I do. Your pictures of voluptuous pin-ups, vintage furniture for the stylist stations, and retro decor are all yummy. There's a few details that keep you from being amazing, though. One is how your team answers the telephone. They don't sound happy to be taking their clients' business. It's the same bored tone that many salons have. The first time I went to Salon Blush, I tried to get directions and was given awful ones through Kensington (aka BOYZ N THA HOOD COME TO LIFE and I used to live near Cabrini in Chicago, so it's not like I'm easily scared). As a result, I was maybe five minutes late. I placed a courtesy call to let them know, and was told, "We might not be able to get you because we have a full afternoon of PAYING clients." Then,the girl sighed, and said, "I guess you can come in and we'll see what we can do." Okay, well, I was a paying client too, and only five minutes late. Next time I won't call, dig? Once I got in, the stylist repeatedly reminded me that she had PAYING clients coming in later and wouldn't be able to do everything I wanted. All I wanted was a trim and a simple colour, but okay. The stylist was admittedly very talented. She did have help. What seemed to be a student or salon assistant shampooed my hair. She gossiped with one of the other stylists the whole time, so I couldn't relax, shut my eyes, and drift off. The stylist seemed to be having issues pulling my hair up to the desired lightness, so I went through a couple of rounds of chemicals. None of it was really explained to me, although I could figure it out on my own. I'm like the Encyclopedia Brown of the beauty industry, yo. My scalp was burning by the end of it, although I didn't make a peep of complaint. One of my stylist's PAYING clients ended up not showing, so it all ended up working out. She handed me off to another stylist to get feather extensions. Now, those were $10 a pop, but I got so many compliments it was worth it. My stylist didn't follow up with me after that, as she had another PAYING client. She didn't even give me maintenance tips or say, "Thanks for giving me a fat tip and let's reschedule you." None of that. I guess they don't care if they get repeat biz at Salon Blush. Then, when I went to pay, the two gossiping girls came with me. I felt as if I was supposed to tip them, but why tip when someone takes over where your stylist was supposed to finish you? In that case, the stylist should be tipping someone to help, not me. (Please note: I almost always tip if I am given to a salon assistant, but this one was brought in because the stylist kept messing my hair up.) I did tip my stylist a good 30 to 40% of the services because at the end, it all looked incredible and many people later commented on my hair. My reason for not giving 5 stars is that I felt like I saw too much behind the curtains action--so to speak. Part of the reason people go to salons is the illusion aspect. We want to feel pampered and special and like we're in a whole different world than the one on the outside, with its bills, traffic jams, and city-chaos. I don't need to know that you have paying clients because I'm a paying client, too. I don't need to hear your idle gossip about where you went last night or how drunk you got. And I certainly don't need to know that my stylist mutter about having to do my hair. If she'd politely communicated her issues, I might have been more receptive. It just felt passive-aggressive because she kept hissing, but wouldn't, I don't know, talk to me. The funny thing, is other than asking what I wanted, my stylist didn't really talk to me. She talked around me. The connection wasn't established. Keeping your clients returning is equal parts talent and connection. If I want to feel like an inconvenience, I'll try one of the well-known snooty salons, not one that purports itself to be down-home and real in Fishtown, but gives you the same feeling of being constantly judged. I'll stress that my hair looked great, but it just wasn't worth all the other hassle to get to great. I want phenomenal--all around. I'm certainly paying enough for it. *** A post-note is that it's strange that some negative reviews are written and then, some positive reviews immediately go up discounting what the other negative reviews have said. These positive reviews are posted by people who've never Yelped or even done other reviews, which makes them seem suspect. It's like when I read the filtered reviews and every negative one had a comment about being "an ex employee." Seems like a lot of drama and very unprofessional. All of these reviews could be learning tools or taken with a grain of salt. read more

This may be the most promising salon, if you're only looking from the outside. This salon is filled with charm and corkiness. My stylist was Samantha. She was sweet and told me all the right things. I saw samantha a few times over a 2 month period. I went in for a color fix. Most of the beginning process was fine, went pretty smoothly. I have natural black hair and was going silver. After a few sessions at Blush, samantha was able to achieve the seemingly impossible, a bright, pale, platinum blonde (well, most of my hair)! For sure, I thought this was it, I'd soon be silver...... WRONG! The last appointment I had with Samantha was a disaster. There were small portions of my hair that hadn't lifted to the desired color, so she tried to lift those sections. Instead of listening to the salon managers recommendation of making sure to section my hair in the smallest possible amount and to wrap my hair in foil, she just put bleach on my hair, mostly without sectioning, and let it sit without foil or wrap. Not to my surprise, the results were a failure. By this point, I assumed she was frustrated. So she put toner in my hair, toner after toner. Finally, back in her chair, she thinks she's figured it out. And again, the salon manager pitches her an idea that she refused to accept. Instead, she creates a concoction of "slate grey" which she applies to my hair. The final product of my hair was dark brown, which she assured was a slate grey and will lighten after a couple of washes. Silly me, why did I pay so much money to leave a salon without the product that I wanted? Layer that day, my girlfriend were telling me that my hair looked like a muddy green mixed in brown, like shit when you eat a lot of green vegetables. I called the salon to tell them my hair needed to be fixed (or give me a credit) and I didn't want samantha to touch it any more. Their response was that, I can't receive credit or have my hair fixed by someone else for free because the money would come out of Samantha's cut..... like I care? I have paid so much into that salon for this hair and for her to just completely ruin all of the work, money and time spent on lifting it to blond. I absolutely do not recommend this headache and poor excuse of a salon. I waited 8 months to post this review. I didn't want my frustration and emotion to write an explicit translation of my anger at the time. read more

I want to like Salon Blush because it's in my neighborhood and supporting your local businesses is important but on numerous occasions I have received terrible customer service from the employees of the salon. As someone who works in retail and knows the importance of at least pretending to be kind, accommodating, or understanding, I have found none of these qualities in the staff here. I was told I had a haircut at 8. The person I scheduled with did not specify am or pm. At 8 am I walked to Blush and found the gate down and the lights were off. I figured the appointment was at 8 pm and planned my day accordingly. I received a call at 8:20 am asking if I'd like to reschedule the appointment I had missed. I immediately called back, explained the situation, and received serious attitude. I will never be going to Salon Blush again. There are plenty of other options in the area. read more

We were here yesterday for a bachelorette party and had such a great time. I've lost count of how many times I have been a bridesmaid. I have been to countless bachelorette parties and doing the pin up party was one of my favorite bachelorette parties. We made our reservation for 6 girls a few months in advance. The salon called us the day before to confirm everything. They were staffed appropriately to handle our group and the other appointments they had for the day. The pin up party is a good deal and is so much fine. It is $199/ person and includes hair, make up and a photo shoot. I loved my hair and make up. I am one of those people that can't explain myself with what I want and they did a great job and knew exactly what to do with me. The other girls also looked great. For the pin up shoot, you should bring some options like lingerie, dresses, etc. Upstairs there is a changing room with a bunch of options but it is safer to bring your own outfit to ensure you feel comfortable rather than gambling that they will have an outfit that is in your size that you will like. There are a bunch of settings to chose from for the photo shoot. Normally I feel awkward in lingerie. But after getting my hair and make up professionally done and getting help from Alanna and Ashley with what to wear, what accessories to use and the best setting, I never felt so comfortable in lingerie and actually felt glamorous. Alanna was great with make up and took a ton of photos and made me feel so comfortable. She is a hard worker who takes pride in her business and is a true professional. I appreciate a business owner who is this involved and caring. And all of her girls were really great. And they let us bring in sangria and mimosas. I am sure the drinks helped us be more relaxed for our photo shoots. We each got an individual shoot and then we did a group shoot. And when we were done, we were all made up and pretty to go out for the night. I can't wait to see our photos! And the salon is so cute. I hadn't been to Fishtown in a few years and it has transformed into such a great neighborhood. And parking is easy. There are plenty of spots on the street. read more

I was delighted when Salon Blush first moved into the neighborhood - so close to me! The decor is '50s pinup', repurposed vanities, lots of pink and purple. It is very casual and not pretentious, which is nice. There was a great aesthetician who did waxing (brows, bikini) - sadly, she moved on. The pedicure I got there was good, but not exceptional. Recently, I called during the week for a haircut appointment. They were able to see me the same day - great! However, when I arrived, I was immediately sent to get a wash without a consultation while my hair was dry. After I was washed, the stylist never introduced herself. I explained very thoroughly what I wanted. She gave me great bangs, but I asked her to put some movement and lift into my layers and she barely touched them. She did avoid some layers I was trying to grow out, which I appreciated. The haircut was pretty inexpensive. While they take credit cards, for some reason every time I have been the credit card printer is out of ink or on its way... a few times I have signed a blank slip of paper! Overall, I have had poor experiences at Blush, and I have given them a few chances. I wish I could like them! read more

I am really disappointed with this place. I was so excited when I bought 2 groupons for the pinup girl makeover photo shoot. One was for my friends 30th & the other one was for me. I did not use them right away but when I called to book the appt the girl on the phone said that no more appts where available for this. Why would they sell so many then?! Cute salon with nice hairdressers. Went in for a 50s look shoot, and they were able to really do the transformation. I was unsure at what they'd be able to do at first (I'm Asian so have pin straight hair and a short, angular, asymmetrical haircut right now) but she was able to do pin curls and makeup that really fit the bill. I took a pic of my hair an makeup after it was done and sent it to my sister who immediately commented that it looked great and very 50s! read more

I am not one writing bad reviews either, but the customer service at the place is HORRIBLE. I called to book a party for my daughter for her birthday which was going to run me over $250 for 4 kids. When I booked the party the receptionist asked me for my credit numbers over the phone, naturally I declined and said I would stop in the next day and with a cash deposit. I ended up working late the next day and got side tracked my fault! Two days later a snot nose girl from the salon calls my house and my sister answered. She asked for me I was not home she continued to ask my sister about the party which my sister knew nothing about. When I got home my sister was pretty heated she said the chic who called wouldnt let up kept asking her in a condesending tone if I was having the party and she needed my down payment. She asked my sister over and over "Well is she having the party or not" My sister said she was such a snot! I have been to this salon a couple times and each time there was something that I didnt like, but this definitely was the straw that broke the camels back! read more

Though both times I've been to Salon Blush I've only gotten a simple trim, I always leave feeling fabulous! For how relatively inexpensive their cuts are ($35) they really put a lot of effort into the styling, wash, etc. Jenna has been my stylist and she definitely knows what she's doing. She takes time to understand how you usually style your hair and what you're looking for. She's also really nice and easy to talk to. I also like the decor, they play fun music, and the location is super convenient. Nothing negative to say -- I'd give 5 stars except that I can't speak to any of their other services yet. read more

went there for my wedding day with 9 brand new customers (my bridesmaids and my mom). you would think for as many people i was bringing, i'd get a discount on my makeup or hair... makeup, i could have done a better job, and i'm mad that i paid $50. Hair, i ended up doing myself.... on my own wedding day. the staff is unprofessional, and the staff was dressed like they just rolled out of bed. i had to have a couple of my girl's hair fixed because, as they say, they specialize in "vintage hair". Not really. They want to, but it left a lot to be desired. If it wasn't my own wedding morning, I would have done all the girl's hair myself. Extremely unprofessional. read more

Only had one experience and its was fair. Must say it only took 3 calls to salon to get an appointment. Lots of dust clutter around and a bit disorganize. Facial was fair. The owner was missing again and front desk person was a bit anxious and overwhelmed. Thought it was just a bad day until I spoke to 8 other women and hear their horror stories. Its not acceptable to be mean unprofessional unethical and dishonest. When I heard this last experience I decided to post a review. read more

I recently decided to check out Salon Blush and was very happy with my experience. I've been going to the same stylist in Jersey for the past few years and haven't had anybody else touch my hair in that time. My birthday was the other day and I couldn't make it to NJ so I made an appointment at Blush and went in. Alaina, the barber, was very nice and confident, which put me at ease. After going to the same person for years, I realized I have no idea how to describe what I wanted done to me, because my normal stylist just goes right to work on it. I gave some vague description of how I normally get cut and she went to work. When she was done I was ecstatic with the job she had done! Very good haircut as well as a pleasant experience dealing with her and the other staffers in there. Great to know I have a local option for an awesome haircut!. Definitely recommend! read more
