We stopped in for breakfast one rainy day and were impressed with the scope of options the store and cafe offered. Lots of fresh produce, a good selection of dry goods, works from local artists and crafters, and elevated breakfast choices (albeit more limited). It felt like a beloved community place and farm. I ordered the veggie panini, and my partner got a bagel with cream cheese. It was fairly busy, and it took a while to get our food. I know they put a lot of effort and care into making their food, and perhaps they were short-staffed that day, but it did feel a bit long. They have a ton of seating (inside and outside) so there were plenty of places to wait comfortably. The groceries were on the pricier side so we ended up not getting anything else, but I respect that they're paying their people a living wage. read more

One of the best grocery stores you'll find anywhere if you can find it in the sprawling farmlands of beautiful Whitefield. We get a farm share every year for outdoor market shopping. You can use it in-store as well for fresh produce only. The store itself has everything you could possibly need. Mostly locally produced faire or Maine-produced. They have a great bakery with fresh bread, pizza and donuts. One of my favorites is the grind-your-own peanut butter machine. Nothing beats fresh peanut butter! read more

My husband and I were so happy to find this great little store relatively close to our new home. I randomly stumbled upon it in search for a yummy breakfast sandwich on a late Sunday morning. As some others have noted, your GPS may not send you to the exact location. Our GPS stated we had arrived, when it was still a 1/4 mile down the road. Anyways, the store has a lot of all natural and/or organic items, and fresh vegetables. A lot of local eggs, cheeses and dairy products were available. Loaves of fresh bread made daily on site lined a rack. There is a small selection of craft beer and wine. There are also a lot of cute locally made items for gifts or home decor. We ordered the breakfast panini and our cravings were satisfied. There were several other sandwich options that sounded delicious and I am excited to come back and try them the next time we stop in. There is a indoor seating area and outdoor seating in the back of the building. It over looks the vast farmland behind the building. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice weather and no bugs to be seen! Prices seemed reasonable to me for the quality of the products they offer. You have to keep in mind the items they sell are not your standard grocery store fare, so you should not be expecting those kinds of prices. Absolutely fantastic. Located in the "boonies" of Maine, the food is absolutely amazing, especially the grilled cheese on rye with bacon and tomato. This little store is kind of in the middle of nowhere, but what a pleasant surprise! We went in today and got some fresh local produce and then decided we had to stop at the cafe for pie and coffee because it looked so good. We tried both blueberry and buttermilk pie. Best store I have been to in Maine. Right in the middle of nowhere near Gardiner, Maine. Great store with fresh made bread, pastries, cookies, treats, made on site. Local milk products, sheep's wool, knitted items, beer, essential oils, hippy items. Wonderful helpers in the store. Seating areas to eat sandwiches which they also have and drink beer. Great vibe in the store. Tons of plants and herbs for sale outside too. So friendly it is like you are family there. Driving over hill and dale we wondered just where we were going. Worried I had taken us on one epic goose chase I watched our GPS for clues as to where we were. Then there is was a literal farm on the side of the road with a hidden store/deli. Sheepscot General is a farm stand, on site of a working farm. When walking inside the first thing you see, is their fresh baked bread, that is made daily - in house. Oh, and it's soy-free! I talked with the woman who does the baking, and found that not only could I have their bread, I could have anything they made in house provided it didn't have mayo in it. I discovered their BLT's. It doesn't matter what bread you have it on, it is amazing. As well as the good selection of prepared foods, they have a full store where you can buy their produce and other local goods ranging from fresh vegetables, local honey, bulk goods to wool from the sheep on location. For me it was a great place for lunch, but for locals it is a one stop shopping experience for fresh organic fruits and vegetables. Berry picking was just starting while we were there, the smell of fresh berries were intoxicating. Hubby and I also enjoyed slices of pie, blueberry for him, cherry for me. It was too delicious for words. Their coffee was the perfect compliment to the sweetness of the pie. This is a must eat again place, we went twice during our 10 day visit to Augusta and I look forward to going again. Rarely have I ever had such wonderful bread, let alone such a great sandwich made with said bread! Don't waste your time here unless you literally have time to waste... First of all and obviously it doesn't take a genius to know that we are in a pandemic, so long story short, when I first arrived, there was a line outside the door which I completely understand and there were a group of ladies at the time waiting with me and I noticed it seemed kinda like a relay race because as soon as someone came out with a cart a person would go in right away and this routine was working great until it was my turn... As soon as I walked in and looked around with cart in hand I'm told "SIR!!! THIS PLACE IS MAXED OUT!!!! AHHHH!! I NEED YOU TO GO OUTSIDE!!!!AHHH!!!" I was definitely confused because everything worked out so great for everyone ahead of me in line and boom! all eyes on me, only brown person in the store.... Best part is the manager didn't say anything, the cashier standing next to the door didn't say anything but get this, the cook/chef/security guard/emo fella with the tattoos and pony tail had to tell me while standing in the kitchen and scream at me in front of everyone like I'm some type of child? Check the videos, clearly all I did was what everyone else was doing until it was my time to go in.. first time here and definitely NOT my last, and still I supported this business. Only in Maine can you drive and hour through back country roads to a family farm that has on its property a General Store and Cafe and yet its also only about 30 minutes from the nearest coastline. Welcome to Sheepscot General in Whitefield. Yes its a farm and yes its a store and yes its got some fine fresh made food. For the past few years I have had an open invite from a friend to try this little and rather organic cafe so today I took her up on it. The menu is small and simple with Sandwiches, soups, salads and quiche but everything seems to really be done with a lot of heart and care and you can just taste the love in it. I hear that the house made Corned Beef Reuben is the local sandwich favorite but I went for breakfast on this visit and opted for the Breakfast Panini. Compromised of crispy flavorful smokey bacon, cheese, fluffy eggs and the surprise kicker Hot Pepper Jelly. The Hot Pepper Jelly was actually very mild and sweet and the sandwich was the perfect blend of sweet, smokey, savory goodness. I cant forget the bread that the panini came on..its all homemade and so very very good. Crusty on the outside, moist and chewy on the inside. I ended up taking a BLT sandwich to go( because there is no such thing as to much bacon or bread) and also a huge cookie for my lunch dessert. The Chocolate chip cookie was delicious with huge chunks of chocolate and sprinkled with kosher salt which sounds different but really brings out all the great flavor. This place is definitely off the beaten path but its worth finding and i will certainly return for lunch so i can try those Reubens. read more
