I ordered a small carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. The cake had beautiful frosting details and a walnut topping. Inside are several cases of pastries, breads, rolls, donuts and other baked goods that looked at me as if to say "I dare you". There was a cinnamon roll-ish thing that looked really good, and a Vanilla latte are what talked to me most. The staff (two young ladies on this morning) were busy hustling and, even with that, were helpful as they tried to keep taking care of customers. The vanilla latte was SUE-PERB, albeit a bit hot for my taste (had it let is cool first). As we sat having our halfway-between-breakfast-and-lunch-but-not-really-brunch snack there was a steady stream of customers, I'm guessing about 50/50 regulars and cruisers. Aside from pastries, coffees and teas, there's a cooler with canned/bottle beverages for the on-the-go beverage drinker. With as much activity as was going on during our visit you'd think it'd be difficult to keep clean, but there was a gentleman who came out frequently to take care of emptied tables, trash, etc. There are windows into the baking area, proving that they've got nothing to hide. The staff here are beyond friendly and helpful. In fact, this is the very place where the "blueberry pie survey" happened. We asked the lady behind the register where to find the best blueberry pie, and she started to ask customers who came by who they recommended. They directed us to Moody's Diner. Locals and staff alike are quick to share stories and recommendations, which makes it feel like you're part of the community even if you're just passing through. The store itself is full of surprises. They've got a wood-burning pizza oven (yes, in a general store, how cool is that?), hot lattes, teas, and other comforting drinks, because nothing beats sipping a latte in a Victorian-style shop while digging into a fresh out of the wood burning oven gooey cheesy slice of pizza. Add in their great selection of beer and wine, plus Maine classics like whoopie pies and Moxie soda, and you've got something for everyone. A local gentleman even gave me the full history of Moxie, and that kind of friendliness is exactly what makes this place so special. Outside, you'll find pretty flowers and herbs adding to the charm. Buttermilk Kitchen is one of the main breakfast spots and was highly recommended. We waited about 45 minutes on a 20 minute quote and eventually I went to sit right beside the hostess stand with my toddler bc it was getting long and they seated us quickly after that. Our server was very friendly and happy to make recommendations. We went with the fresh biscuit of the day - which was a delicious peach cornmeal served sliced and warmed. I chose to order the chicken breakfast biscuit sandwich and my husband had the corned beef hash. All was very good and the inside is cute and charming - there is a nice back patio with a few hightop tables overlooking the water.
