The waitstaff is amazing and always checking on you making sure your glass is full and that you don't need anything. The food is fantastic! The last few times I've been Shelby Café, it has been mediocre at best. Today, I ordered the three vegetable plate and wanted broccoli casserole. I found out that there are no longer serving it, and in its place they now have cabbage casserole. The young lady on the phone helped me decide to give it a try. Don't get me wrong, I love cabbage. Fried cabbage would've been a better option for their menu because this did not taste good at all. Stopped here for dinner one night just to try it. It wasn't exactly what I expected, after hearing alot of people go here. Prices are not bad. The night we went I ordered beef stew. Never again!!! It was not good. I could not believe they used canned potatoes in it!!! I asked the waitress she said yes that's how they make it. No Thanks!!! The Salad dressing honey mustard was homemade and very good! Then I ordered ham. That wasn't too bad. I don't remember the difference between city ham and country but I got the one that's thicker. Centrally located on the main drag, this is where everyone from the mayor to the Little League coach catch up while filling their bellies. I like diners especially for breakfast. Both our plates came out quickly, piping hot, and as ordered. I was disappointed, however, that both my livermush and home fries were cooked in the fryer and not the flat top. Overcooked. I heard about Shelby Cafe and decided today was the day to stop in for breakfast. Boy, am I glad I did. Hardwood floors moveable tables and chairs. I looked over all the menu breakfast selections, and they are all great selections, which made it difficult to choose. I ordered the vegetarian omelet, grits, and homefries, plus coffee . Enjoying Sunday breakfast with my son in my old stomping grounds of Shelby and one of my favorite breakfast spots. They upgraded a bit in the last 2 years, but it still has the same feel of a throwback restaurant. Brody ordered pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage links and I ordered the country breakfast with city ham, hash browns, eggs over easy and a grilled biscuit. Brody has never tried liver mush so I added that so he can try it out. No better place to try his first liver mush than in Shelby, NC. The plate of hot liver mush came out first for him to try and he ate most of it before his meal came out. I think he's a fan!! And after the liver mush the meals lagged way behind. Even for a busy Sunday it was a long wait for a traditional breakfast meal. 20 minutes from the time the liver mush was served until the meals came and my coffee cup has been dry for 10 minutes before the meal with no refill. I could have chose any place between Brevard and Weddington and I chose the place with history and tradition and I did not expect to wait that long. After the wait the food came and our server refilled my coffee and we ate in hurry. The food was good, not great. It was all traditional simple breakfast food. Nothing fancy or complicated this the disappoint in the lag on the food. I have had plenty of good meals here with great service this unfortunately was not one of those times.
