Misses the mark on atmosphere and service. Coffee was just ok. Pastry was tasty but I had to wonder how long it was there. The grungy, "fringe" vibe may appeal to some, but not to us. There are better coffee shops in town that feel cleaner, are more welcoming, and have great coffee. It's a shame too, because it is in a perfect location off the square. We tried several times, but they lost us as customers. May check back from time to time to see if they clean up their act and focus on excellent, welcoming service. read more

OK so I was visiting my amazing girlfriend here in Shelby and I wanted coffee. My go to spot is Starbucks since there are a ton in my home state GA. It was suggested that I try LilyBean. I went and got the coffee. The young lady who took my order and served me was pleasure to deal with. Once I got back to my girls house I tried the coffee. OMG hands down the best coffee I have ever had in my 47yrs of life. Local folks don't sleep on this Gem forget the chain stores and support your amazing local businesses. I try to support local when able. We popped in here on the way to Chimney Rock. It looks like the local coffee shop that didn't. Pastry was very limited and the coffees looked to be all the syrupy and sweet stuff that means the actual coffee isn't good. My husband got "the signature" iced. Yep, crappy coffee with lots of sugar and chocolate syrup to mask the coffee. I got a "cold brew" which wasn't cold brew, but was weak ice coffee. Restrooms weren't clean and the toilet paper dispenser was broken. All in all, I'd say skip this place and stick with the big box in this town. read more

In town for an event, stopped in for an early morning latte. Nice place. Great coffee. Well roasted without a burnt flavor that some espresso establishments have. I was the only out of town person in the place. Lots of locals. Everyone friendly. Light food, muffins etc, looked good but I was just here for coffee. I stopped in to get a hot chai latte, WOW, the worst thing I have every had. They put a tea bag in hot water with a little milk. Wife and I like to end our day/evening with a hot Chai Tea Latte at Lily Bean, especially during cold months. The Shelby square is a safe, pleasant place long after dark. Most guests we've seen are young people, likely college students often doing some school work on notebook computers. We like sitting at the table in the window and watching the slow, quiet night life. Don't know what else to say. When in Shelby for a few days to a month or two, Lily Bean is a regular spot for us. This is a cuuuuuute, cozy little coffee shop in Shelby, NC. I stopped here just before a beer festival to grab some coffee for myself, and a Coke for another beer rep. The man behind the counter was friendly, but seemed a little overwhelmed as it was just him. I was second in line, and there were a handful of teenagers in line behind me. It took much longer than it probably should have, but there's plenty to look at and pretty sweets to add to your order. There were quite a few people sitting around chatting, and a few working on laptops. I just ordered a house coffee, because I had already spent so much time in line. House coffee was fine, nothing amazing, but fine all the same. Next time I'll order something fancier and update my review. I wish that this man had a little bit of help behind the counter! I agree with Lynn J a little bit - they do seem to cater to the locals (one man that was greeted on a first name basis skipped ahead of me in line). But on the same note, if I had a cute little coffee shop, I probably would love on my regulars too. Shelby is out of the way for me, but I could see myself hanging out here if it was closer to home. read more

Walked in and waited about 45 seconds for someone to acknowledge me. The two employees were busy talking and didn't even look my way. Ordered coffee and a delicious looking cinnamon roll. Was delivered a cinnamon roll with that was literally half-iced. Like only the right side had icing. The left side had zero icing. When I asked "what happened to the icing?" I was told "it's all there". So I ate my dry, cold, half iced cinnamon roll and left. FWIW, the iced half was great; the other half? Not so much. Coffee was meh. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I do occasionally like to stop in for hot chocolate or tea. LilyBean used to be over on Lafayette St but they've now moved to a new location with a lot more space. It's very nice and trendy inside. Lots of fun art and they've really integrated the store's atmosphere into the old storefront they took over. Everyone seems to know each other here. They have lots of drink option and the prices are pretty reasonable for specialty stuff. I wish they had a few more options for deserts and such, but I'm not complaining too much. I'm proud that Shelby seems to support its local coffee houses versus bringing in chains and corporate juggernauts. I always appreciate a store that becomes a part of the community like LilyBean. read more

After two days of kayaking and hiking, we dreaded the ride home. To make matters worse? We're making the trek uncaffeinated (I know it's horrible). After falling asleep with my head wedged between the seat and the door and my mouth hanging open, I started yelping for COFFEE. And true to form I kept getting main chains . Then, Lily Bean popped up, and I knew I needed to find it. After navigating my husband to a parking spot we stumbled in sore stiff and parched for some perky juice. I got the iced signature coffee which came with flavored syrup and chocolate drizzle, and my husband did the same with a shot of espresso. To my absolute delight, they also have reusable metal straws with cleaners, straight and slightly bent, for sale. So not only did we get delicious java, we got more reusable straws for our arsenal. We come through Shelby often on our way to Lake Lure and Mt. Pisgah. I think this is going to be a staple stop of ours! read more

Not as good as another coffee house in town, but it works. Lilly Bean is a little cheaper than the other in town competitor, but gives you a little more for your buck, and over all is fairly good. If you get anything flavored watch out, it's either OVERLY flavored, or under flavored most times.
