Closing in on Tonopah driving up the hill we get into town. Usually I stop at the far north end of town at the station that gas the Burger King inside. But this time I decided to stop in the middle of town at this Giggle Springs. I think I've stopped at another station with the same name on Bishop CA. This place seemed to have the cheapest gas in town and a good sized connivence store to get more road food. There wasn't a line for gas, so I pull in and pick a pump. The rest of the crew heads inside to the restrooms and junk food. The pump takes my credit card fine and I set the pump to pumping. This Suburban suck a ton of gas for the distance. But we're carrying 5 people and a ton of gear, so per person I guess it's worth it. I go in and use the restroom, decently clean, get a couple of cans of coke and now I get to have someone else do the driving! Reno, actually Carson City here we come!

We happened to stop in during a busy Friday night rush, and despite the crowd, Cody (who's currently in training) handled things really well. He stayed pleasant, composed, and professional the entire time--which isn't always easy, especially as a new hire in a high-traffic setting. Kudos to Cody for keeping it together under pressure--that kind of attitude definitely doesn't go unnoticed.

Being frequently out of Diesel and having issues with the payment system on your pumps and also not putting out squeegees and windshield cleaning fluid really doesn't help matters either. I can't really say much positive about this place. The general vibe they're conveying is, "We know you don't have a lot of choices out here in the hinterlands so we're not going to put any effort into our offering". It is missing many amenities, as it is on a dirt lot, with only concrete slabs where you fill up. It is open 24/7, but only has an attendant on duty from 8AM-4PM M-F. There is an old style credit card machine in the center of the pump area, where you slide you card. Make sure the magnetic strip is facing to the right, then select the pump you want to use on the screen, 1 & 2 are regular, 3 & 4 premium and 5 & 6 diesel, wait a few seconds for the screen to display approval, then go to the pump and lift the lever and pump your gas. If you want a receipt, go back to the credit card reader and slide your card again.

Actually, this is an option for many menu items if you don't want fries. It saves you a couple of bucks and maybe a half-inch off the waistline. The 1/2 lb burger was well cooked, the bacon was tasty, and the lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions were crisp and fresh! I've visited several times over the seven years I've lived in the area and have always had a good experience. Make sure to try the pies if you have room for dessert... or maybe just have dessert instead? They completed a slight remodel a year and a half ago. Nothing major but the place looks nice and clean inside. The kitchen also received completely new appliances and a makeover. There's a small market attached if you need drinks or other sundries for the road. Gas pumps are outside and I think they got new ones recently as they appear to be an improvement over the old ones which were hard to read. Be careful as this is a remote out-of-the-way location so you'll find higher gas prices than elsewhere. Located at the intersections of Highways 6 and 120, Benton Station is owned by the Benton Paiute Tribe. Bishop is 35 miles south, about a half-hour by car. Tonopah, Nevada is 80 miles east, about an hour and 15 minutes drive. Hawthorne, Nevada is 84 miles north, an hour and 20 minutes. Mammoth Lakes via Highway 120 and Benton Crossing Road is 46 miles west, almost an hour's drive. The eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park (at the top of Tioga Pass via Highway 120) is 62 miles away, a little over an hour. If you're in the area and hunger is gnawing at your stomach stop by Benton Station for a bite and a little rest. They're open for breakfast and lunch only!
