I've been going to shelter for years. It's been a staple in the Encinitas nightlife scene, but yesterday had to have been the best visit I've had thus far. My friend, and I decided to go to shelter after dinner and the bartender Esteban made such unique delicious cocktails. The service was top-notch and my friend and I had the best night!

It's a decent place with decent music. They were playing house music but didn't give a dance floor which I found strange. The bottles there were very expensive as well.

Esteban Susa was a piece of work...dude absolutely ruined my night back in the hometown with my siblings. I came in with my little sister on her last night before going to Asia for 4 months. I gave her multiple $20s to cover our two drinks and give him a tip. She was in the process of counting and handing out the cash to him, and in the time between her pulling out that cash that I gave to her, and him collecting his total... he thought it'd be a great idea to throw a lime wedge at my face and demand a payment. I politely told him I'm not paying for such disrespect and started walking towards the front door. He decided that it would then be a perfect time to personally escort me out and tell the neighboring bouncers not to let me in, (he was mad that I wouldn't pay for a drink after being so thoroughly disrespected). I was calling it a night at the point anyways, so it was a moot point. Honestly he embarrassed himself, and the entire establishment. I'm a bartender him myself, in Newport Beach, and I would never treat a customer so poorly (again- he threw a lime wedge at my face after I gave my sister the cash to pay him). Bottom line- get Esteban out from behind the bar, he does not respect his guests well enough, nor does he have the proper patience to deal with folks trying to be good patrons. Management- look at the footage +/- 30 minutes from 11:15 pm on 3/14/26- he really thought he could just tell Manny (the guy running the line) that I was the villain and get away with it. I'll be telling everyone in Newport to avoid Shelter like the plague indefinitely unless I hear a response. I've never been so disappointed with an establishment's front runners- Esteban has to leave if I ever bring anyone back there. This place failed to teach him proper customer service. Don't come here unless you want to be ignored and then disrespected for trying to get a couple of shots. (Would leave a zero if possible.)

Is there a music schedule for the week?

I don't think there's a music schedule, I believe I've read online that they just have a unique electric/house style. When I visited Shelter (around midnight) there was a DJ playing house music. I'm assuming that the nighttime music is all dependent…

I ordered the mahi mahi fish tacos and a house coffee. The coffee was actually pretty good! Cream and sugar were delivered separately to finish with your preference. As for the tacos, it was okay. The fish was a bit dry for my liking, cabbage could have been chopped with more finesse, and I wished they QC'd their limes a bit before putting them on the plate. Both were bone dry and I had to ask for more. Moreover, the cilantro lime rice was also a bit bland. It needed salt to lift the flavors in my opinion. There weren't even flecks of green if it was supposed to be cilantro? I tried boyfriend's veggie hash but was disappointed to find that it was almost all potatoes. Having said that, it was an extremely generous portion so he was filled up. While I didn't try it, our friend that had the chorizo hash also said it was okay so I'm guessing the ratio wasn't quite right. Anyways, ask for their chili sauce on the side, that's actually quite surprising. It had really good heat and was more like a chili crisp than a vinegary hot sauce. The plates that did score favorably at the table were the carne chilaquiles and the divorced eggs.

One is a nice, sit-down restaurant. One is a coffee house. The third is the Pocket Pool and Bar. We found the service to be good, but we really didn't enjoy the drinks. The space was rather empty in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. We received coupons good for two welcome beverages at The Pocket when checking in at the resort. When we arrived at The Pocket after checking in but while waiting for our room to be ready, we found ourselves to be the only guests there. No reservations were needed. The clouds were out but it would soon be nice and sunny. We sat down and each ordered a zero proof cocktail. The ask was for something fruity and sweet. We ordered a variation of the Feeling Peachy, consisting of peach puree, citrus, mint, and bubbles. We did choose to give the bartender the freedom to make drinks that would be fruity and sweet as none of the drinks on the menu sounded like what we were feeling for. The bartender brought us drinks that we tried and decided we wouldn't have ordered if we didn't have vouchers for free drinks. As such, we acknowledged they weren't for us, though if we would have paid for them, we would have been disappointed. As such, I'd encourage anyone ordering drinks at The Pocket to stick with drinks on the menu. Speaking of the menu, the menu offers beach bites like smashed guacamole, craklin' buffalo wings, elote fries, quesadilla, sunset ceviche, and dirty nachos. The main event dishes include blackened Baja fish tacos, the wagyu double smash, millionaire's BLT, coastal Cali burrito, and Pacific poke. The balanced-ish menu items include pocket Caesar, the wedge, paradise bowl, and the Santorini. Treat Yourself dishes include cookie sando, assorted fresh fruit, and seasonal sorbet. Beverages include cocktails, wine, drafts, cans, zero proof. The Pocket is a surf-inspired bar with a view. There are televisions to watch sports games, and with the bar being part indoors and part outdoors, you can catch the nice weather or escape from it depending on if it is sunny or rainy. You can make a reservation on OpenTable. The bar hours are open daily from 11 AM to 7 PM. The kitchen is open Monday through Thursday from 12 noon to 6 PM, Friday and Saturday from 12 noon to 7:30 PM, and Sunday from 12 noon to 6 PM. Should we visit the Alila Maria Beach Resort Encinitas again, we may give The Pocket a try again but more for the atmosphere, good service, and perhaps some bites instead of drinks.

It did have a good amount of the pickled onions. Id order again. I also tried a bit of the lox flatbread which was also pretty good, i could really taste the dill and it was a good alternative to a lox bagel. The amount of salmon and feta were a good balance. Id recommend coming to try Mia's and then taking a stroll to the nearby shops to browse.

One of them was not as cold as it needed to be. The garnish was crusty. Now the food... We had a slider, a burger, scallop crudo, fries and shrimp. The scallop was not fresh at all. The leaves they put on top were wilted. The food was very disappointing. I think the shrimp could be bought in the frozen section at Trader Joes and put in the microwave.
