Haven been waiting to try here in a while. The interior looks very cute with anime drawings and a a big No Face by the door. We ordered dinner sets which are around the mid to high $20 range. The portion size is quite big. The tempura and karaage are really good. The karaage is light fried not heavily battered and the chicken is really juicy. The sashimi pieces are really thick. We felt that their rice was a bit hard that day but sure it's a one off thing. Their sets are definitely worth trying. The restaurant isn't that big. They have very economical lunch box options for the weekday. The tempura was a bit oily but the portion was big. Tasty sushi place in the middle of Burnaby Heights. Parking is available on Hastings, as well as the side streets and the city owned lots. The place is nice and cozy. Japanese theme with the wood trim. Staff are friendly. I'm not sure if they're Japanese. (I think they're Chinese?) They have a pretty solid lunch bento box selection. I had their sashimi bento with teriyaki beef. The tuna was fine but the salmon tasted off. Knock one star off. In hindsight, I should've probably said something instead of eating it anyways. Hopefully that was a one time thing. The rest of the bento was fine. Wouldn't mind coming back at some point. Hopefully they fix the salmon problem. read more

Are you looking for a good sushi around Hastings Heights? This is a great option. The Shen Sushi is a small restaurant, well decorated with an amazing menu. The photos on the menu will help you a lot, but the servers were amazing. She was super friendly, recommended their chefs suggestions and more. Their food set is enough for one and it was so yummy! Loved every single of sushi piece that I ate. Their Nigiri and money pocket are really good option. Loved their miso soup with shitake!! Their sushi was so fresh and so yummy. Was looking for a place to escape the heat and eat. Unfortunately the AC here is super weak, I think my car air conditioner is stronger.... Service. It took forever for our food to come out, about 40 minutes for sushi. Seems to be a lot of takeout orders with couriers coming and going so maybe they prioritized that. We had to ask a few times for napkins and the correct settings for the table (missing chopsticks). The wrong receipt was brought when it was time to pay -lucky for them I'm honest so I returned the lower bill for the correct one ;) We got the dinner sets E and B along with some assorted rolls. The food itself was pretty good! I've been once before for takeout and it was ready at the indicated time so not sure if today was an odd day. Perhaps I'm also more impatient today because of the heat and lack of AC but it made me regret my dinner choice. I think I would stick to take out at Shen sushi! read more

Lunch on Good Friday took us to Shen Sushi and wow, this place is an absolute gem! We ordered a mix of both modern and traditional items from the menu. My husband had a bento box that came with Miso soup, Chicken Teriyaki, California Roll and some Tempura. Our daughter had the B.C. Combo (Dynamite Roll, B.C. Roll and California Roll), and I had Veggie Pocket & Unagi Mini Rice Brick. The Veggie Pocket & Unagi Mini Rice Brick were so different from anything I've had in any other Japanese restaurant. Such creative fare at Shen Sushi and flawlessly executed as well. My Unagi Mini Rice Brick was a brick of rice as the name implies, but it was battered and fried like Tempura. It was wonderfully crispy as was everything else on the table that was battered and fried. (ie. Tempura in my husband's s Bento Box, and the salmon skin in the B.C. Roll) Veggie Pocket was bursting with flavour, especially paired with the Mango Sauce; I loved the presentation. It was a very creative way to use an Inari wrap compared with the standard Inari Nigiri that we find at most Japanese restaurants. Fans of "Spirited Away" will recognize a certain character who can be found in quite a few places throughout the restuarant. There's a mini claw machine there where you can try your luck at winning a candy, for just 25 cents. Our daughter gave it a try. She wasn't able to pick up anything with the machine but they still gave her a candy in the end! There was also an Easter Egg hunt set up in the restaurant. We were there NYEve. 5.00 PM. No one there, but filled up within 40 min. Lots of take out and meal delivery. We tried Sashimi, and fish was very fresh and well handled. We also had the assorted Sashimi and some of their rolls. Fancy roll was excellent. Yacki soba noodle very small for the price. Service excellent. Kept coming for more tea. Still decorated for Christmas. But looks updated. Good street parking on Hastings and no rush hour restrictions on the North side of Hastings right by the future hall. So shen sushi opened and repace a ramen shop. It used to be a good ramen shop but i think it wasnt that busy. Shen sushi was okay. It tried to be upscale but it didnt reach my level of what i call a good sushi. Got the dinner set b and c. The tempura was terrible. The sauce was too sweet and the batter was bad. Thr sashimi was frozen yet thick. The rests were pretty much basic stuff. It served a lot of stuff like korean sushi restaurant though but its a chinese sushi restaurant. Cheers! read more

This has quickly become my go-to sushi spot! Food is consistently good, service is friendly, reasonably priced and it's a comfortable atmosphere. I would even say it can compete with the bigger sushi places downtown. Recommended. read more

Decided to try this place for lunch and it was very disappointing. The service was terrible despite there only being one other group in the restaurant. We weren't offered water or tea even after our order had been taken and we had to wave down the waitress and ask her if we could get tea. Me and my boyfriend ordered the rainbow sashimi to share and that was the first thing to arrive but we didn't even have plates. It took us 15 minutes until we were able to get the attention of one of the waitresses just to ask for plates. The sashimi itself did not taste fresh, not sure if it was just thawed out or if it was because it was sitting on a bed of ice. We also ordered two of the special rolls which were okay at first but after the first couple pieces I felt like they were overly drenched in sauce making them very soggy and very heavy on the rice. Been here on 2 separate occasions and food is solid. No, not a cheap sushi joint and there are many of those around..didn't feel like lots of rice and poorly cut fish. Presentation for the assorted sashimi was spectacular (no pictures today!) for a mid-level restaurant. Grilled squid appy was tasty and firm, no chewy texture. Geisha roll was nicely packed and seared tuna on top was good. Rice to filling ratio just right. Appears family run but not a negative, just an observation. Cute decor. Shen Sushi recently opened and I was excited to try out this new restaurant in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. The restaurant has a nice cozy atmosphere and friendly attentive service. There are so many items to choose from on the menu including set meals and individual items. A lot of creative sushi rolls are offered here. I decided to try the mountain hand roll which was unique and delicious as it was wrapped in soy paper instead of seaweed. The roll was a good size with imitation crab meat, spicy tuna, cucumber avocado and prawn tempura. It was accompanied with a tasty spicy mayo sauce. I also ordered the toro tuna sashimi which was very fresh! Our server made sure our cups never ran out of tea :) I'll definitely come back again! read more
