    Taku Special Roll

Best. Lunch. Ever. My wife ordered the signature roll in the photos below - Taku Roll. It was as tasty as it was enormous!! I had miso soup (epic!), salmon and avocado roll (awesome!), and unagi roll (also awesome!!) I scarfed all of MY food down so quick I forgot to take pictures. Great service, decent prices, and all of the food was extremely delectable. If only we lived closer; we would eat here every day. ほんとにおいしかった!

A hidden gem around royal oak, this familyrun business provides a small and homey eatery that offers fresh and delicious sushi placed on beautiful japanese plates. We came in for a quick lunch during a weekday, and were greeted by a lovely japanese couple who runs this restaurant. The store is small, but they were busy with many take-out orders. We had the classic "vancouverite" sushi roll selections and they were all made very well. The ingredients were fresh and the pieces did not fall apart easily. The taste is quite authentic and the price is definitely affordable. I'll definitely be coming back on days i want to have a simple sushi for a meal.

    Dynamite roll and inari platter

A small and unassuming but very cute and homely small kitchen with just one table for seating. Sushi is reasonably priced and really well prepared by the sushi chefs. Tried the inari aburi platter and it was pretty good, nothing spectacular but nevertheless you get what you order. Dynamite roll was pretty good.

This place opened up a few months ago and replaced 2 of the sushi businesses I used to go to. They have a more elevated menu than the ones before it and pretty good quality sushi. The platter I ordered was $31 and plenty of food for 2 ppl for a good price. It's run by a nice couple as it's a tiny little space so don't be surprised if you have to wait awhile for your food cause they're doing the best they can with a 2 person team. I would recommend take out because they don't have much tables inside due to the small space.

A new sushi place that opened up in the Royal Oak area, I was craving for some classic rolls after work and decided on the salmon and avocado roll and the unagi roll. Both were fresh and well made and left me wanting more. I tried to go again the weekend after but ended up finding out they are closed on Sundays! Will definitely be back to try more.

Taku Japanese Kitchen is a small 'hole in the wall' takeout that is has extended hours, unlike several Japanese restaurants in the Burnaby area. The Yelp reviews were favorable and one person stated the limited tables and chair there. Since that review, the tables have been removed and they are strictly takeout. The beef don bowls were excellent and the sushi combination was good. Service is quick, and the food is prepared after you place the order. The wait time is around 10-15 minutes. Parking is limited since the lot is shared with 5 other businesses, including the 7-11, vet clinic, bakery, and 2 other private businesses. Watch out carefully when backing out of the lot. People are constantly walking out and they aren't paying attention to drivers leaving the strip mall.

The restaurant is the best sushi that I have been in burnaby. I ordered taku's special maki, nigiri, salmon oshi and vegetable udon. every dish is perfect. From now on I'll have lunch for "to go". I am absolutely satisfied to hearty meal.

She then left to let us peruse the menu. We took awhile to look so we were asked at once point if we were ready and we sis we needed a bit more time so the server was delightfully accommodating and said whenever we were ready to give a server a call. Later on when we were ready our order was taken by a male staff member. We ordered a decent amount. Miso cheese eggplant, chawan-mushi, fried fish collar served in some kind of broth, 8pc nigiri omakase, blue fin tuna&uni hand cone, another hand cone but I can't remember what was in it..wifey ordered it, vegetable tempura and a black truffle dynamite roll. The highlight for me was the black truffle dynamite roll, it's taste was perfect. The right amount of truffle used and not over powering like I've had at so many other venues. I was pleasantly surprised and delighted. It was smokey, earthy and tasted wonderful. The miso cheese eggplant was delicious, slightly salty from the miso and wonderfully roasted soft eggplant. The fish colar in broth was light and delicate, beautiful flavor and texture. Chawanmushi was soft and delicate, excellently flavored. The omakase which had fish from Japan was delicious, super fresh and masterfully prepared! The tempura came with a green tea seasalt which was different but very nice. For dessert we had the green tea tiramisu which was very tasty. The restaurant itself is small but cozy and wonderfully decorated. My wife and I had a wonderful meal and I would go back for special occasions.

The staffs/owner were very friendly and made great recommendations. Had the hamachi carpaccio, so refreshing and appetizing. The homemade ponzu (lemony) sauce has a nice finish with thin sliced onions and veggies. The Engawa Arburi nigiri was recommended, and it was phenomenal. It is the 'fin edge' of flounder. Super delicate, with seared (arburi) flavor and melts in your mouth. Yum! The other highlight was the Wagyu beef cubes severed on stick. Two skewers 4 cubes each. The Wagyu was perfectly cooked. It melts in your mouth with every bite. We also enjoyed the 7 piece Omakase sushi set. The fish was very fresh and satiating. Love the lotus root chips garnishing. We loved everything we had but would likely skip the Omakase appetizer Platter. Perhaps we were spoiled by the hamachi carpaccio appetizer. We still enjoyed it but For the same price, we would prefer the sushi set. It had 9 small plates in a beautiful serving box including- tiny sashimi cube of salmon, tuna, tamago, and my fav is the komochi nishin (herring fillets ("Nishin") layered over a base of crunchy capelin roe), also included in the tiny plates of apps were, chicken karaage, baby taco, sliced taco, taco in red sauce, and seaweed salad. Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

This is a more theatrical style so expect louder music and a more theatrical experience (eg one of the servers played the flute for the guests celebrating birthdays). I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

It is more of a traditional Japanese place. There are no fancy rolls, not even California roll.
