I ordered a hibiscus iced tea with a cookie witha fruit filling. My friend ordered a latte. The drinks were both beyond our expectations (the lattee had a nice aromatic flavor and thr tea was really refreshing). The cookie also was delicious. I would highly recommend coming here. read more

Shenandoah Joe is a cozy coffee shop in a Charlottesville strip mall. My boyfriend and I stopped here for some coffees and a cookie after my appointment at UVA. I had a hot vanilla latte and he had an iced latte. Our drinks were ready pretty quickly and we settled in at a two-top by the window. It seemed like a popular spot for students, as there was a large group next to us on the couch area. Bathroom generally had a line during our visit, but it was clean. Prices were reasonable. Cute little cafe with different seating options. It was fairly busy when I got there but luckily a table opened up to sit at. Great place to do work, cozy. I got an iced dirty chai with almond milk, basically $10 which for the price I don't think was super great but not bad. We visited Joe's while on a weekend trip to C'ville. It was very easy to find near UVA and there was a private parking lot in the shopping center, but the building looked pretty old and rundown. Inside, however, we really liked the decor and ambiance, except the furniture arrangement.. it made the line cause bottlenecks and people couldn't get around. I was very surprised that decaf coffee wasn't an option and we didn't see any descriptions of the flavors. When I ordered my latte, I wasn't asked about options, like milk type, add-ins, flavors, etc. I asked a few questions, but the vibe I was getting was 'hurry up and move'. There was a really long line, but this was my first visit. I planned to order a pastry with my latte. Although there was an entire list of pastries offered, and the online photos looked delicious, the case was all but empty. So, we skipped the pastries, ordered coffee, and looked for a place to sit, but there weren't any available tables. Almost all of the tables were two or four tops and were being occupied by single people. It looked more like a study hall than a coffee shop. Some smaller, configurable tables and chairs could help make more places to sit. The entire time we were waiting, which was quite a while, the barista was complaining, very loudly, about steam wand issues, dealing with stress, "going crazy", etc. He was kind of scary. And my latte tasted very burnt, so it wasn't worth the stress, the wait or the money. Also, if you have to go potty, go ASAP. There was one, single, unisex restroom and the wait was looooong, especially with all that caffeine knocking on your bladder. IMHO, I saw Yelp had quite a few highly rated coffee shops in the area, so if I were visiting C'ville again, I'd probably try somewhere else. read more

The Shenandoah Joe - Ivy location is probably one of the best total coffee experiences you can find in Charlottesville. Here are three reasons why I say that: (1) You have a higher probability of finding parking here, in contrast to some of the other coffee shops around the area. (2) They only do pour overs and espresso drinks - which may not be convenient for the "grab and go" type of customer - but I always like to sit down and enjoy a decent cup of coffee. (3) The atmosphere and ambience is great with decent amounts of seating. It doesn't try to be something more than a coffee shop, and it doesn't have a grunge factor that might make you want to go to another coffee shop. My only thing is that the consistency of quality with Shenandoah Joe is lacking, whether it's the roast of the beans or the manner in which the pour overs are brewed. You can order one of the single origins one week, order the exact same thing the next week, and have a totally different experience with your coffee. read more

I love Shenandoah Joe with a passion and the Ivy location is my favorite. Though it gets crowded on the weekend, it's a super cozy and relaxing place to study and enjoy a quality cup of coffee. My go-to drink is their iced mocha, which is much stronger than those I've had elsewhere. They strike the perfect balance between the bitterness of the espresso and the sweetness of the chocolate. A few tips: -If you get jittery from too much caffeine, stay away from the large iced mocha which has four shots of espresso -Grab a customer loyalty card (10 stamps gets you a free drink) -Try the chocolate chip cookies As a recent grad, Shenandoah Joe is one of the many reasons I'll miss Charlottesville. This place receives raves for their coffee, but I prefer tea. I ordered their breakfast tea in a real mug with saucer. I arrived before it opened and partially chose this place because it received nice reviews and it opened at 6:30am. Besides light-colored wooden tables with 2 padded chairs, choose from a settee or an upholstered chair with an old end table, outdoor black iron tables and chairs and inside tables seating six. I'm loving their floors with reclaimed wood and their 3 staff members were friendly. There's ample parking right outside their door, too. Oh, and my change went flying over the countertop, so a barista bent down and picked it up for me. The establishment doesn't look like much from the outside; I would've overlooked getting coffee here, had my friend not recommend giving this place a try. This location definitely has more space than the one on the Corner. Overall, it's a great place to meet up with friends, relax, or study! I'm going to rave about the simple latte that I ordered today- I think it was the best latte I've ever had. From previous experiences at other coffee shops, I tend to be disappointed with the foam on top because they're usually flat or annoying to drink. However, the foam on today's latte was as delicious as it was gorgeous! The thickness and creaminess of my latte was luxurious. I was impressed! Their regular coffee is great as well. Super cute little spot! We were stopping in Charlottesville on our way to Outer Banks and had to find a local coffee shop to get our morning caffeine fix. They had a great selection of single origin blends if you'd like a simple cup of coffee. They also have some pretty delicious cold brew! We actually should have gotten a growler to take with us. The baristas were also extremely friendly and I heard them greeting several regulars while we were there. I hate to kill the vibe here, but we weren't that impressed with the coffee. Yes, the ambiance is nice in terms of setting, but the coffee is just above average to our tastes. To us, it has the burned roasted taste of Starbuck's coffee. It's not smooth. It has an edge no matter what grind we put on it. We travel a lot telecommuting from our RV, so we seek out local eateries/coffee houses and have a top of the line grinder and brewer in the rig. This could be considered a snarky comment now. Almost everyone here was staring at a screen with earbuds in their heads. It was creepy. It was as quiet as a library with those without earbuds almost whispering to each other. I get a certain percentage of folks living on the internet anywhere, but what happened to conversation and interaction in the East? We've not lived here in about six years, and this is not a change for the better. My husband travels for work and was going to be in Charlottesville for his 40th birthday; we just had a baby and I know leaving was especially hard this time so I wanted to make sure his day was a little special, even if he did have to work. I reached out to Shennandoah Joe to see if they could help - my husband loves coffee, and that's putting it mildly; he roasts his own codes at home and its a total coffee snob - so I was hoping to have some sort of gift delivered with coffee beans and a latte to keep him going. I was put in contact with Dave who took my idea and ran with it. He put together an amazing gift box with roasted beans - that he can grind while on the road - and green beans - that he can roast when he comes home. Dave was incredibly helpful and had no problem delivering to the John Paul Jones Arena, which is where my husband was working that day. Thenway my hot mocha was made: Dripped from a filter, like Chemex but I guess a different brand. My mocha tasted good. I bought a chocolate croissant. They don't heat up their pastries. Maybe, it's only meant to take home. I was hungry. I took a bite. And another. I couldn't find the chocolate. It was there settled on the other end of the croissant. My complaint about this place is that they close the doors early. What's the point of a coffee shop that closes at 4pm? On one of the Sundays, I decided to study at a coffee shop, so I picked Shenandoah Joe for a change of pace. I got a cup of mediocre coffee and pulled out my laptop to study in the middle of the afternoon around 3:15pm. They closed on me at 4pm and didn't even finish my coffee. The coffee is also nothing special, but they have Starbucks prices. I recommend going to Barnes and Noble at Barrack road since they are open until 11pm and have Starbucks coffee. read more

Best coffee in Cville, no question. You have a choice of many different types of roasts - and the baristas can actually describe them to you (or if you have no idea what their fancypants words mean, they'll pick something nice for you). I love the people who work here, they have never failed to make me smile. But, I will say, that because EVERYTHING is a pour-over, it is an incredibly slow process to get a coffee. I wish they had the option of a quick to-go coffee for those of us who are not picky about the finer points of brewing. I also wish that there were a couple more food options.
