Tragar Brothers' coffee is outstanding! Love the smell of roasting coffee and always enjoy visiting the shop.

Anyone who knows coffee and lives within a 50 mile radius of Trager Brothers in Afton (also a location in Lovingston) has literally zero reason for not making this roaster and coffee shop a regular pilgrimage site. To paraphrase the Beatles, there's nothing I can say that can't be said, but man do I love, love, love this place. Excellent whole bean offerings, roasted to perfection by expert roasters. Delicious hot and iced coffee and espresso drinks that simply can't be replicated anywhere nearby--including, sadly, in my home town of Staunton (hey, Trager Brothers! There's a huge opportunity for expansion in the Queen City!). And top all that off with sublime, informed, and incredibly friendly front of house staff. Yeah, it's a little hard to find, but anything worth having is worth looking for. And in this age of googling and Apple mapping and whatnot, there's no excuse for not availing yourself to the BEST coffee in central Virginia. Y'all who might have read some of my other reviews will know: I usually have a minor nit to pick with even my five stars. Not so with the Brothers Trager, fam. Enter their shop and be greeted by the heavenly aroma of roasting coffee, the whir of a burr grinder, the quiet scream of a steaming wand, the genuine smile and friendly greeting of the barista. Came out here on a whim b/c of the signage on the main road. My wife is a big coffee fan and I mean... why would we not stop by? First off, it's a bit odd to find. If you're looking for a big ole store or facility that screams coffee shop, you're looking wrong. It's in in the far end of a building off to your right when you follow the signs. (seriously the signs are key here). When you enter the main building, you're hit with the awesome aroma of coffee... just head to the end and walk in the door. It's a cool shop that Is totally worth visiting. If anything, it's b/c of the high quality coffee they offer. Seriously awesome world class coffee hidden away in a repurposed school building! They were literally roasting beans right there when I ordered. I first had their French roast with a shot of espresso. That was so good that I wandered back in and got a soy milk cortado. Amazing place! read more

Found this gem while on a girls weekend in Nellysford, down from RVA. An absolute must if you're in the area. It's kind of hidden in the back of the community center. There's a HUGE space/playground right in front of it--truly a paradise for parents I'd been craving a cafe con leche and imagine my surprise when this tiny coffee shop gave me one of the best ones I've ever had! What a unique spot! Great coffee and matcha... I ordered an Americano with hazelnut syrup, while my husband ordered a matcha latte with oat milk and vanilla syrup. Both were delicious! The Americano wasn't over-roasted or bitter. Prices were very impressive too. I also ordered a bag of the Love Blend to take home. Service was good. There were two women working the busy shop. Ambience was straightforward. No inside seating, but plenty outdoors. Wish they had some grab-and-go foods, especially since there aren't many coffee shops out here. We found this place by luck. We just wanted some coffee since we were driving from several hours out. We noticed that they had a seasonal honey lavender latte and vanilla rose latte so we decided to try them both and see. I highly recommend either one of these. The vanilla rose latte was amazing, but I'm pretty sure the lavender latte will change your life. Also, the Trager Brothers Coffee team was friendly and very helpful with our questions. Our experience was so good that when we had to drive back out of town we made sure this was our first stop before we left. We ordered the honey lavender latte and vanilla rose latte again. After a long weekend at a cabin in the mountains there's nothing you need more than a good latte to power you through the drive back to Richmond. This little shop is an oasis of fine roasted espresso in a wasteland of fast food drip coffee. The shop is at the back of a long, low-slung brick building that used to be the county elementary school. Today it hosts a range of small businesses including Trager Brothers Coffee housed in classroom 17. One of the brothers greeted us as soon as we walked in and took our orders. He explained they roast all of their beans themselves in the middle of the shop. A few older men came in to buy some bags while we were waiting. The whole place was decked out in Halloween decorations, and they even had candy out in a cauldron. A mom and her couple kids were enjoying the outdoor seating. Both our lattes and the dark roast were delicious. This place is a great find in a corner of the Commonwealth lacking cafe gems like this spot! read more

This place is great. We were staying up the road for a brewery trip, and didn't want gas station coffee, so we looked this spot up and came by to take a look. The shop is tucked away in what looks to be a renovated elementary school, and took us a moment to find, but we eventually sorted it out. The coffee is EXCELLENT. They roast it on-location and do about a half-dozen different single origin roasts. Their counter-service is solid, and the space is beautiful. Come here! read more
