The people there are fantastic, the customer service has been wonderful in my experience, and I love the extra pampering that comes with a haircut. The facility is clean and very well maintained and the products they use are quality stuff. Chanel is a great hairdresser and a really nice person. Now, for the two haircuts I've gotten here from Chanel. First of all, I want to ask you, what comes to mind when you think of the word 'mohawk,' in regards to hairstyle? Short hair on the SIDES of the head, with longer hair on top and the BACK of the head, right? Simple, really... I went in for the first time in November to get a butchered haircut (Remedez in Orem, I'm looking at you) fixed and Chanel did a wonderful job of salvaging my hair. Short story short, I cut off 14 inches of my hair to donate to Wigs for Kids and asked the hairdresser there for a mohawk. Gave the woman who did my hair at Remedez pictures and all, and she just cut my hair short all the way around the sides AND the back of my head and made an oopsie with clippers that left a huge bald spot up the side of my head. I found Shep's Salon after that and was able to book an emergency appointment with Chanel. She was able to minimize the bald spot and give me a nice haircut, considering how little she had to work with. I was impressed with her and Shep's, overall. Fast forward to April. My hair has grown out but is quite uneven and I still want a non-punk mohawk. I asked for a mohawk, but not PUNK, like shaved sides and a really narrow, long hawk, but a messy look that can look good either up or down, with the sides not TOO short. As the haircut progressed, I requested that she go shorter on the sides and I was happy with the length. The hair on top was shorter than I wanted, but what killed me was the hair on the back of my head. Same length as the sides of my head. I didn't get a mohawk at all. I got a really masculine haircut instead, with one square, masculine sideburn and one sorta tapered sideburn. Basically, I got the same haircut I had back in November, which isn't a mohawk at all. It can be styled into a faux hawk, but that's completely different from an actual mohawk. :( I was able to fix the sideburns with my husband's clippers at home, but that's all I can do. When I saw the back of my head, I froze for a second, then went into automatic and said, "Great! Looks good!" It didn't hit me until I got home. I was, and am, pretty upset. Now I have to wait few more months for my hair to grow out again. Maybe I should have brought pictures and made it clear that I wanted some length in the back, like an actual MOHAWK. But wouldn't you assume that a professional hairdresser would know what a mohawk was? I've asked dozens of hairdressers in the past for mohawks and given them free artistic rein, and although none of them have been the same, they've always given me a mohawk, not a faux hawk or a haircut even remotely like what I got here. I've always been a really easy customer and easy to please but not this time. It'll be difficult to style what's left of my hair until it grows back since it doesn't look good in any style other than the faux hawk and I wanted something that would look good down. I guess I'll have to keep looking for a hairdresser in Utah who actually knows how to do non-conservative haircuts on a woman. And I'm not talking about "Jon and Kate + 8" Kate Gosselin's weird, suburban soccer mom haircut back in 2006. read more

I was first recommended to Shep studio when I was in college. Years later I am still coming back. Even when I moved out of Utah I would come back to have Patrick cut my hair. From major cuts, colors, bangs or just a trim I've always been extremely satisfied with the results. Everyone is friendly, professional and make you feel comfortable and relaxed. I've been going to Shep's Studio for years now, they do a good job as far as cuts and glosses. Their products are Bumble & Bumble, which is nice. The last time I went in there, I asked for a melt or "ombre" as they call it and I came out with hair only a tad lighter on the bottom. The girl that did my color was very nice, but she didn't understand what I was talking about -- even after having showed her pictures. I should've guessed by then that it wouldn't work out. haha. :) The price for having done something that wasn't noticeable was outrageous. I go there because it's hard to find a nice place around Provo. The salon is beautiful and it has a very modern feel. I say go there if you're looking for a haircut, but if you're looking to change your hair color to a specific color style, make sure that you use a stylist that knows what he or she is doing or go somewhere else. They're always booked, so you have to set an appointment early. Shep is super nice and so is the other guy, I would've had them do my hair color but they were a bit pricier (they have more expertise than the others there) and they were booked till who knows when. read more

My whole family has gone to Shep's for years. We have been very loyal to Shep and have tipped him very, very well. A while back (a couple of years ago) Patrick one of his employees said insulting comments about my older son to me and was constantly reading my wife's text with comments about what she was looking at. We went to Shep and Shep said he'd had similar complaints. I at that moment wondered why he's still there. Today I got my haircut and paid my bill with my generous tip and tried to book a haircut for my younger son. Apparently he has missed a couple of appointments and she said he had to prepay. I said what for? She said I don't know but I booked it. We have gone to Shep for years and years. The tips alone would have paid for several hundred haircuts. I understand having a business policy however I'm a business owner / long time Customer and I think that he should have come to me and I would have paid him for the Missed appointments. In the past year we've seen his experienced help leave and his salon has very few customers. Sheps response to me was it was hard losing all those stylist at once but it's turned out to be great for our culture??? Hmmm...Shep doesn't see why I would be upset! As a business owner all I can say is " COMMON SENSE IS VERY UNCOMMON" I contacted Shep and he was very arragant and condescending about the matter. His electric chairs have been broke for months and with my bad back it's hard to get back up out of the chair so I quit having my hair washed. Mentioned it to Shep and he said it's too expensive to fix. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worse enemy. I never write a review but I feel like I need to for Shep Studio. I am so picky about my hair color and usually very indecisive too. I have gone to at least 5 different hair salons in the past 3 years in Provo and Shep is my absolute favorite. They really know how to do color so well. One time I wasn't completely happy with my cut and they fit me in their busy schedule the next day to make sure that it was exactly what I wanted. It's a little pricey for students but it's so worth it, especially for girls with difficult hair to color. I'm a blonde (but I sometimes go brunette) and Stephanie is my hair colorist. I did not enjoy my experience there. I have been there 4 times, but unfortunately, my hairstylist left the place so I opted to go with someone else at the studio. The last experience was unpleasant because she kept running her sharp comb through my ears and when she blow dry my hair, she yanked on it too hard for my comfort. It also took an hour for my cut/dry which was a long time in my opinion. But the most disappointing aspect of my experience was that she was not able to understand what I requested and after explaining over ten minutes of why it wasn't the style I asked for, hoping she can fix it, She didn't and told me that what I ask for didn't make sense to her. I have had the same hair style for years and have gotten that cut before. I was so frustrated that I just let it go. Not going back there again. One last item, their prices change according to who your stylist is so beware of that if you change stylist. read more

To start, this place is classy and aesthetically in tune. I was seated right away. My stylist was Chanel and she is so great. I wanted to cut my very very long hair (that has been long my whole life) into a shoulder length bob. When I showed her pictures of what I wanted she summarized what she was going to do and made sure it was exactly what I was envisioning. On top of that, she didn't freak me out or act like it was some scary decision...which most people did when they'd hear I wanted to cut my hair. Anyway, she aced it. Exactly what I wanted and made it such an easy transition from long hair...I don't even miss it. I highly recommend Chanel. She gave a shoulder and neck massage, washed, cut, dried, and styled my hair...all for $40!! Such an amazing deal. And not to mention she is adorable and so fun to talk to! I was expecting a haircut, but I got a hair lesson as well! David was awesome, he was able to show me how to make my FLAT hair stand up, something I've been searching for for a long time. The staff is very friendly, and seem very knowledgeable in their craft. My only complaint is the price, with tip you're looking at $55+ for a male haircut. It is a bit steep, but for a lesson in hair, a back and neck massage, and a haircut....it was worth it. I will be coming here again, you should too! read more

Horrible cut! The stylist that cut my daughters hair was inexperienced and failed to follow specific instructions (which included a picture as well). Courtney had no concept of cutting hair. Her recommendations were off and she failed miserably to even come close to what we wanted. My daughter went in and spent 2 hours and came out looking exactly the same. $125 for nothing. read more

I showed up to Shep Studio looking mangy as hell. Bearded, disheveled, grotesque. I sat down in the chair and Sydney asked me what I wanted done. I told her " I don't know, do what you gotta do." She then proceeded to do it. I walked out of there still bearded, but now looking like a younger, taller, stronger, more handsome Brad Pitt. I can attribute 98% of that to Sydney giving me a hell of a haircut. It's going to cost you a few bucks, but if you can't budget $35 bucks a month to making sure you look great, then you are destined to look destitute. Go see Sydney, you won't regret it. read more

I've never had a haircut that I absolutely loved. But when I went in to Shep and explained the look that I was going for, they understood exactly what I wanted. I've been going to Patrick at Shep Studio to have my haircut for 8 years now. He's the only person I trust cutting my hair and I dread the day I ever move out of state and have to find someone else to do it. He has great taste and will offer creative and flattering suggestions for your lifestyle, hair type, and facial structure. He's willing to listen if you have concerns. The whole staff is friendly and upbeat including Shep, the owner, who will always give you a cheery hello. I enjoy seeing the style of the staff members because they provide a lot of inspiration through their own individual style. The salon itself is always very clean and I love the modern decor. Prices are great for the professional results you get especially compared to what I used to pay in California for less skillful cuts. The new line of products they've been using are great (R&Co, Oribe) and I love the mini massage/relaxation moment they do with Aveda Blue Oil. They also started carrying Smith & Cult nail lacquer which I've bought for myself and for a gift. read more

I love my cuts every time I go there I actually have an appointment on coming up this week. I get my cuts by Lauren but when I get it colored in there honestly last 2 times they didn't color cover up on my white hairs and I was pretty upset so I've got it colored by two different people there before and it never comes out right. The first time it was just a root touch up because I had a balayage because my hair was already pretty blonde at the end is she made my hair really orange color the second time went for touch up with someone else at same salon you could see alot my white hair still . I didn't want any more damage to be done to my hair. So now all I get is only the cuts there. And when you're paying around $200 for for your a color and cut for your hair in my opinion there shouldn't be a mess up every time. But don't get me wrong the people that cut your hair are not the people that color your hair. The people that cut got it on lock but when it comes to downstairs coloring I'm sorry but I can't anymore. read more

I can't believe I've never written a Yelp review for Shep's Studio yet!! I had my hair cut by Twix for nearly 4 years. He's a magician and I can't say enough good things about him. He knew my hair inside and out and I walked away with a perfect haircut every time. He's the perfect balance of listening to you but also adding his professional two-cents. Over the course of 4 years I had a few different styles and each were superb. Not to mention the extra pampering was wonderful. I've had over 5+ friends/family get their hair cut/colored by Twix and they all feel the same way. Shellyne helped me choose a completely different look. I donated 8 inches of hair and she styled the remaining locks into a layered lob with the cutest bangs you ever did see! I'm impressed by her talent-- she is an "assistant" but she proved that she knows how to cut hair professionally. The shoulder and scalp massage was a nice bonus. I knew that Shep Studio was generally more on the expensive side when I started going, but I didn't mind because I liked my stylist and it was conveniently located for me. But every time I went to get my hair done it seemed to get more and more expensive. Eventually I told my stylist that I couldn't afford the upkeep of the pink hair that I had, and instead just wanted to go all-over brunette. At the end of the appointment she charged me $240 for one, all-over color on my short/medium length hair. No highlights, lowlights, balayage, melt--nothing. I asked her why the price would be so high when I had never paid that much even when I had pink hair. She told me it was because she put a glaze on my hair before she put the dye on so it was like she had done my hair twice. The amount for such a simple job was frustrating, but what was even more frustrating is that I had told her one of the main reasons I wanted to go brown was because the pink was too expensive--and then she charged me more for it anyway! read more

Well, hopefully my review will help you out. I met Dave Dawson and was invited to come in and try the Shep Studio experience and I haven't gone back. And that says something because I've never paid more than 10 bucks including tip for a haircut. The last placed I was loyal to got bought out by Craig's Cuts and it was fine. I was happy most of the time but sometimes had issues with the haircut. But my experience with Shep Studio has been fantastic and beyond! I've not once been "meh" about my haircut but have felt like a million bucks and the customer service has been the cherry on top of a great experience and service. I enjoy being able to tell the truth about a great company that is doing a great job. read more

PROS: The experience is amazing and everything from the decor, chairs, customer service upon arrival is amazing. Shep really took the time to think through every aspect of the customers experience when coming into his salon. Upon arrival, you're greeted and offered drinks (full bottled waters, soda, etc.). The chairs are comfortable especially when sitting in them for long periods of time....great for those who are coloring their hair. I was completely surprised when I went to wash my hair and the chair I was laying in started massaging my back! Totally cool! CONS: The stylist who cut my hair, did a horrible job. Horrible in the fact that she spent maybe only 3-5 minutes actually cutting it (I guess she could've butchered it, but didn't do enough). I asked for layers and shaping around my face. The first thing she did was cut the back in a straight line. Then started to blow dry my hair for a few minutes. She then ended it with a few layering snips here and there. Next thing she was on to styling it. I was so unimpressed when she grabbed her mirror to show me what she did. In no way was it worth my $40! I could've went to Fantastic Sams and gotten a better cut than what I got and saved some $$. The worse part was when I checked out to pay my bill. I couldn't believe the price I was charged!!! I did an Ombre and was quoted $70-$90 at consultation. When I checked out, the price was $130. Don't get me wrong, the ombre was beautiful but so not for the shocking price I was charged. I asked the receptionist why the price jumped so dramatically and she said that the stylist indicated that she had to make 2 more bowls of color. I vividly remembered when she asked the assistant to make more color. The first time, I overheard her telling the assistant she only had 2 more strands to do and to make a small amount. The second time she asked the assistant for only a tiny bit more because she just had the very end of my hair to finish off. So when the receptionist told me that the cost increased because each bowl of additional color costs $15, I wanted to die! First of all, why am I being charged for the miscalculation on the behalf of the assistant? REALLY?!!! I was so excited to go back to the salon because of the "experience", but after the $200 bill and crappy haircut, I will save my hard earned money and forgo the "nice to have" luxuries that Shep's Salon offers and save it for the spa. I really wish they would improve so I can enjoy both the luxurious experience and be happy about the coloring price and haircut. read more

I could not have been more disappointed! The color I asked for and the color I walked out with were not even close. I left in tears. After giving it a few days, I called back. The stylist said there wasn't anything she could do. So much for customer service! She implied that I was more concerned about what others thought than what my own opinion was. After consulting another stylist, who works at different salon, she was able to adjust my hair to a tolerable color. She said a filler color should have been used before the main color was applied. So not only was the Shep stylist rude but she was also uninformed on coloring applications. Needless to say, I will not go back. The bottle of water and modern decor are not enough for me to subject myself to Sheps salon again. read more

I went in trying to find a better salon then the one I've been going to. First it's like a bunch of little girls work there they did not do anything like the picture I showed her i wanted an all over color and there like patches not dyed and it took 4 hours and I understand that i have long hair it takes awhile but this was way to long and she was in a hurry to get mine the girl couldn't even blow dry my hair she had to have someone come help! Then afterwards there was no straightening or any sort of style Then she just shipped me off to pay! it just felt like I went to a school but 190 is no school price I am willing to pay lots for my hair but it has to be done at least right! but just wait she said to fix my hair it would be another 300 like you couldn't do your job and now you want me to pay more to finish it!!!! Like I really thought this was gonna be a good salon I had high hopes but just what the heck is going on there!!! I will not be going back way and I advise anyone trying to find a new salon to not go here!!! read more
