I went to a wedding here and it was so beautiful! The space is naturally very pretty and I got the best photos! The food was also delicious, it is probably some of the best wedding food I have ever had. The service was amazing! The 3 stars are for the beautiful course environment (10-18) but the owners should be ashamed they charge $45 for 9 holes of twilight "spring" golf! The sand traps are rock quarries and the course bathrooms are LOCKED! Note, I am a woman golfer. And our cart started flashing low battery half way through the round. The employees were professional and accommodating but this is 100% on the owners! All they want is your moolah! I'm even rethinking the 3 stars... read more

Beautiful landscape surrounding golf course. Charged $138. Bunkers were in terrible condition and neglected. No beverage cart on a weekend round. $138 and you don't groom your bunkers? This course used to be top tier. Seems like it's fallen off. The views around the course definitely save it. If you want to charge a premium price, you better have premium conditions all around. Not to mention old gas cart with NO gps. Where is all the money they are charging going to? read more

Spectacular setting and one of the best courses in terms of layout and setting. The downside is the bunkers need sand, not rocks and hard dirt. For the money, I would have hoped for to have a GPS in the cart but all-in-all, I will go back again. read more

Service is great, everyone was very attentive and made you feel welcome. The golf course for the price is over rated. the golf carts don't have GPS, a ball washer/club cleaner, or cooler like i would expect at that price. Also, there are no drink carts or halfway houses. You only have one small area to park after 9 holes at the club house and the choices are very limited. As far as the actual golf course, there are too many holes that are just short, layup drives. The greens read pretty true but lacked true speed and the sand traps, even though well maintained, were hard and compressed. Not worth the price read more

On yesterday, April 25, 2022, my brother had his wedding at this venue. It was an absolutely beautiful location. The staff was top notch and their club house was spectacular. Ok, so sadly, I only have wedding pictures and videos, which I won't post here because this shows more about the wedding and not the golf club itself. So for that, I apologize. Now as far as the golf game - no idea! Came here for a wedding and wow! Beautiful grounds and location for a wedding or any other event. The only con was trying to navigate through the golf course and find the event building. It is tucked away in the back and lots of twists and turns. Tons of beautiful trees are lined throughout the entrance and throughout the grounds. Tranquil is a good word to describe it! The wait staff was awesome - attentive and friendly. Bar tenders were quick and made great drinks. The food was also excellent - came out hot and had good flavor. Restrooms were clean. The room where the reception was at was pretty, open, and airy. Bumping this down. For a premiere club and premiere prices, they have really lousy golf carts and cart paths. I know that might be nit-picking, but $85 for "off hours" for the weekend deserves better. First, carts are a pain because the parking brakes are shot. Having to slam on the parking brake 5 times (not exaggerating) to get it to lock is no fun, especially on such a sloped course. Two, they are gas carts, and the one we had was nauseating, leaking exhaust and running rich. Finally, the cart strap doesn't hold. Thankfully I keep a bungee in my bag for just such cases. Just really poorly maintained carts. This was the case for both of the carts for our group. These carts are the worst ones I experience at any course in the SE Michigan area. Two cart paths: They are kidney and spine busters. Yep, probably costs a pretty penny to redo them, but that's why we have the country club prices, right? Three: I get it that you don't want carts in the parking lot, but you need to make accommodations so we can drive to the range, even if it's required to drive all the way around the parking lot. I'm not lugging my big cart bag, and I absolutely hate leaving a couple grand worth of equipment out for all to take. And I beg of you, do something about 16. Just a god-awful hole which players back up because (1) all balls roll down to the left, making a nearly impossible shot to the green, and (2) it's a blind shot, so you have to drive up to make sure the landing area is clear. This hole would be vastly improved if they just built a green in the middle of the fairway or built a tee box in the middle of the FW, and we'd have back to back par 3s on 16 and 17. Time for Shepherds/Cherry Creek/Pine Trace to step up their game. read more

Great course and layout, beautiful. However, there is no on cart "gps", which is fine, but there's also no yardage books, or even a pictorial of the holes at the tee box or on the card. Blind golf at this price point is silly. read more

Fantastic golf experience from every aspect. I saw some were discouraged with blind shots, etc. ; Last time I looked, Augusta National has many blind tee shots and approach shots and has severly sloped fairways etc. It is a beautiful property and GREAT golf. Played golf on 9-23-23 Saturday, with 3 other friends who are average golfers. Our round lasted 5.5 hours due to the fact we were behind a 3-some of men and a woman with a toddler. I'm not sure what the course operations team was thinking but they are not making very good decisions. The men play golf while the women and toddler played in sand traps and toddler had his plastic club which he played with on the greens. Shame on Shepherds Hollow for a very poor decision. $15 for a plain cheeseburger which came without lettuce or tomato or onion which didn't even include fries. Imagine getting a small flat burger on a plate with nothing else for $15. $6 for fries, so now the cheeseburger and fries is $21. The burger was almost well done after I asked for it medium rare. The chicken tenders which come with coleslaw was ordered by someone else, and all you get is one or two forkfuls of coleslaw. The server took our orders and went back in with them and she missed taking an order from one adult, so we had to tell her we weren't done ordering when she made another appearance. I had to ask for the lettuce and onion for my burger which took too long to get, we had to repeatedly ask for coffee refills which took too long to get for a table of 8 people, so I asked the server to leave a pot because she couldn't do her job very well and she had to go ask if that was okay to do. Bad service seems to be the norm for us there. The server only had one table to serve...ours. Time AND money all wasted. I've been patient but I don't think we can give this place another chance. read more

Golf only write-up. Shepherd's Hollow has three 9-hole tracks. You can book any combination of 9's. My golfing pal and I chose 1-9 + 10-18. If 19-27 is a better nine holes then it must be amazing. Well-known course designer, Arthur Hills of Toledo, Ohio said its the best piece of inland property he's ever worked with. I like Hills' courses. So you're asking, "Why 4-stars, not 5-stars?" Because the great property is so hilly that over the course of play, a golfer has no fewer than 6 blind shots from tee to fairway or from fairway to green. That's not a course you want to play just once. My round had several lost balls because I honestly hit the shots in the wrong direction. A few more tours of the course and I would be much happier and score better. Wide, well-groomed fairways, speedy undulating greens and from the Blue tees - challenging. Good range but a little short on full grassing. I had a wrap in the banquet room and a coke. Not too expensive. All in all, anytime I make a trip from Ohio to Michigan and have golf on my mind, Shepherd's Hollow will be on the short list. It's public, scenic and difficult. My style. read more

One of a few visits I've had to Michigan and I've never been more impressed. The pure beauty of the property is captured in a perfect way by the layout of this course. If you're ever in Southeast Michigan with the intent of playing golf and you don't play at this course, shame on you.

We had a tee-time today at 4:00pm. Our 4-some had a great round, the weather was perfect and the course was in excellent condition, as always. We ended the 18 in about 4.5 hours. We were really enjoying ourselves. There weren't many people on the course so we weren't rushing through the round. After 18, a friend and I had a bet to settle. It was a large wager (for us). We decided to play 18 again. The sun was still shining (it was beautiful actually). We both hit great drives and had side-by-side 185 yard iron shots waiting for us. We hit the shots as your ranger pulled up next to us. He was angry. He immediately said "IN...NOW!" without any previous greeting whatsoever. We asked him what the problem was, and he stated very angrily that we took forever to play our round to begin with and now we thought we would get away with playing 18 again. Wow. I've never been spoken to or approached by a ranger with such a disrespectful attitude. He treated us like rotten prisoners and followed us closely back to our cars after we VERY politely questioned him and picked up our balls. We are a respectful group. We fix ball marks, we drive the carts appropriately and we are always aware of and respectful to other golfers and the course. Within our circle of 20-30 guys, Shepherd's Hollow is regarded as our favorite course in the area. We play it often. Unfortunately, I can't anymore. As a business owner, I refuse to support businesses who have attrocious customer service. I have deleted my photos and "check-ins" at your course on social media. I will be posting this review on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and TripAdvisor. I'm sorry, but there's no excuse for treating customers (who pays hundreds of dollars to golf at your course regularly) like total crap. We understand the rules, now. We weren't aware of them earlier today. We figured other golfers were out on the course and we wrongfully assumed that we weren't inconveniencing your staff by playing our favorite hole twice. We apologize for breaking the rules. Had we known how you felt, we would never of played it again. There are much better ways to communicate then what we experienced today. There's no reason for immediate anger and hatred over 10 minutes after what was a completely enjoyable round of golf. Extremely disappointed. read more

I play in a league at Shepherd's Hollow every week so I know the course fairly well. Granted its a great track with lots of design elements that make for a very challenging lay-out. However, with that said my complaint is with the course maintenance. For such an upscale course I can't believe the condition of the tee-boxes. They are riddled with divots that seem to be ignored by the maintenance staff and the greens are so bushy and poorly maintained that they have to be running at no more than 7 on the stimp meter. I don't know what the problem is, whether its done delibertly to avoid maintenance costs, but with the prices they charge I find this hard to believe. Or its simply a lack of follow-thru or knowledge on the Superintendents part. Either way I hope they change course because the one they're on is causing there reputation irreparable harm read more

Course is largely solid. It gets a lotta play and is un-marshalled; so expect 5+ hours. No cart-person either, ie no beverage service. 1-9 and 10-18 are the better 9s. read more

Beautiful golf course. Now I understand why I've heard so much about this place for so many years. It is challenging, maybe too challenging at times. The scenery is fantastic and the course is fun to play. Expect to lose some balls, because you will be teeing off blind at times. read more

This is a typical Arthur Hills course - blind shots from many tees and from the fairways to the green. Lots of local knowledge is helpful if you are playing here for the first time. The greens were well maintained and very fast. The tees not so much. Most holes required a bit of searching to find some grass to tee the ball up - lots of divots on them. The worst part of the course are the bunkers. Not that there were too many or that they are well positioned, but that the sand in them varied by hole, there were small and medium sized rocks in many of them, and there were deer tracks in several that I played out of (not sure there is much then can do about those). The pace was good as we finished in three hours, but we were first off in the morning and play ready golf. read more

I have golfed here countless times and as usual it was in great shape. But, you would think for $90 green fees they could have one range on the course to ensure speed of play. There is zero excuses to have a five hour round of golf. On the tenth hole there were 4 different groups on the same hole and we saw this a number of times during the round. I golfed holes 1-18 on Saturday (9-22) and found the course to be in good shape. However, the manager who refused to refund me for a member in our group who could not attend at last minute was very un-professional. The policy does state that no refund under 12 hours of tee time (as he stated they would have put a single with our group, which I find unacceptable during this pandemic, as this course does not seem to care, still using rakes on course). But then he had to go further and tell me that I should make the missing member pay, which I found unprofessional, as he has no idea why he could not attend and if this was paid by myself. I planned a round of golf for 4 friends (2 new fathers) to celebrate a birthday, which i will do again, just not at this course. read more

There's a reason why Golf Magazine rated Sheperd's Hollow a "Top Ten You Can Play in America" and Golf Digest ranked it the 37th best public course in the country. The course has a beautiful clubhouse, even though I'd like a few more snack options at the turn, and the holes are picturesque. Granted, it is mid-May and the course has barely seen the busy season, but nonetheless it is immaculate. Holes are challenging and demand accuracy off the tee with many forest/tree lined fairways. Unlike other top tier courses, I was still able to shoot fairly well considering my 25+ handicap from blue tees which added up to about 6500 yards. There are 27 holes of golf at Sheperd's and I played the first 18. If you're a big hitter, some of the shorter par fours are reachable off the blue tees. The greens were playing pretty slow, but by the time July or August roll around, they will be like glass. The par fives aren't terribly long, but you better be good with your woods or long irons, obviously. There are some blind tee shots as well as a few steep approach shots in the fairways making second shots difficult to aim. Hopefully there isn't anyone waiting impatiently behind you because you will need to drive back and forth in the cart to help yourself line up shots. A few of the greens had some major undulation leaving terribly difficult downhill putts virtually inevitable. If you're feeling on top of your game, Sheperd's Hollow is a great testing ground to see what you're really made of. It was worth the hour drive. In fact, it would be worth even a two or three hour drive. read more

Let me first start by saying the course is incredible. That being said, do not book a teatime on the website. We attempted to do that in order to get the before-9-AM rate which is about $20 cheaper than the after 9 AM rate, but the website malfunctioned. By the time we called in the morning they had no two times before 9 AM. So we set a 9:12 AM tee time, arrived, and explained the predicament. The pro shop folks and the manager were completely uninterested in trying to help us out. Very disappointing. read more

Great course! One of my favorites in the area. Sure you may get days where it plays slow, or conditions aren't perfect, but every course has those times. 9/10 times it is well worth the money compared to other courses in the area. Comment for Nathan about his review below. Next time you go to a store, try to steal something right in front of the security guard and see how they react. Essentially that is what you did by trying to play 18 again without asking or paying. You paid for 18 holes, and trying to play another hole is stealing. Simple as that. Could they have handled it more respectfully? Sure. But you were essentially committing a crime so their reaction was probably acceptable. That's a dumb reason to not play a course again. But means it will be less crowded for the rest of us. Just my two cents. read more

I give the ambiance 5 stars and the course 2 stars. The views and clubhouse are terrific. But you have to love a course that has way too many blind shots, bunkers all over, severely sloping and undulating fairways and greens, to really enjoy playing. I've played a lot of public and private courses in the area and this is one to which I will not be returning. As the website says: "We intended to do something special here. I wasn't concerned with 'standard playability.' This course requires thought and imagination. " That's true, but you had better be ready to play it quite a few times before what you think and imagine is remotely applicable to the gimmicky course. read more

This place charges $70-85 a round... 1) I don't need alcohol, but I'm pretty sure a beverage cart with water and gatorade is do-able. 2) There are more unrepaired ball marks on this course than a municipal course. 3) It is a goat track on several holes. 4) The pompous geriatric starter does not stick to the 18 (out of 27) you have been assigned and therefore you end up running into a buzzsaw of a back-up. I play 18 holes in 3 hours and had to watch the two-some in front of me hit 2 or 3 balls per shot for 5 hours. I'm pretty sure this place can afford a ranger to address pace of play. Every course from Rochester to Oxford to Fenton is better than this place. read more

Beautiful golf course, you truly feel like you are "Up North." Well maintained and challenging. Very nice club house and I would have rated this 5 starts instead of 3 but the rangers/starts are an EXTREMLY rude group of older gentlemen. If they could get a better staff of rangers/starts this would be a 5 star experience. They really put a damper on things with their poor, inconsiderate attitudes and it is fairly common in most reviews of this beautiful course. When you are paying top dollar you expect to be treated with respect and dignity. Hope they can turn it around with the staff. read more

I'm writing this review because I want this establishment to understand it should be a 5 star in all aspects. I first want to say, I believe this is the finest public course in all of Metro Detroit MI and probably in the top 3 of MI. So my review is an experience I had with the club pro and starter recently. I golf here all the time. In the last 2 years, I have golfed this at least 7 times if not more. In these 2 past years, I have not been able to get on the front 1-9 holes. I have early tee times, late tee times, not busy times. I been given every excuse. Well it all came down to last week when I politely went to the head pro there and told him my situation. He didn't give 2 cents and basically blew me off like my business didn't matter, past present or future. I guess when you can charge $75 a round, who cares about any complaints. It was pretty deflating after all these years to be treated like I never golfed there before. It's disappointing and humiliating to say the least. I think the management at Shepherd's Hollow Golf Club should rethink how they treat their loyal returning customers or they will start losing them.
