Some wisdom that was passed down to younger generations was to never cheap out on a mattress or shoes. I had rectified the former, and thought I did with shoes, but coming into Sherman brothers I learned quite a few things. Firstly, the people here are wonderful, polite, courteous, attentive, and were very helpful in all my questions and inquiries. I had been eyeing a pair of Alden 403 Indy boots, and have quite a few pairs of quality mens shoes. However, the Indy boots can be notoriously difficult to size due to the last and shape of the shoe. If fitted correctly, I had heard these were the most comfortable pair that one can own. I had come in twice, once I was helped by Ken and the second time by Jose. The first time being fitted, I got a different size than what Jose recommended in the end. But after careful measuring, sizing, resizing, and resizing some more, I was assisted to get the best fit possible for my strangely sized feet. All in all, it took about an hour and a half, but you just won't get the same kind of experience at another shop. The folks here have been in the trade for decades, and the level of knowledge and experience is just unmatched. If like me, you went to a shop thinking the customer service members knew what they were talking about, you might be suffering with an incorrect size for years. I'd say if it's your first pair of nice dress shoes or boots, come to Sherman brothers first. Even if you were to get the most amazing pair of shoes from another shop, it won't mean anything when you're suffering from walking all day in an ill-fitted pair. read more

From the moment I walked into the store, Ken was very attentive and quickly provided knowledgeable feedback regarding a boot repair quote I requested. While I didn't wind up doing business with him that day, he went out of his way to e-mail me other boot suggestions and was honest about how the cost of the work that needed to be done on the quality of boot I brought in wasn't worth it. Wish I had looked at Yelp before dealing with these guys. (My experience with Jeffrey was similar to that of another reviewer.) I tried on a number of high-end shoes (Alden) through these guys and because of shenanigan they played with my credit card, didn't notice till later that they hadn't refunded me for many that I returned. Among the last of the independent retailers in Center City, an outstanding place to shop. Excellent customer service. Definitely my "go to" place for shoes. I'm advised that they have strong online presence as well, if you want to review stock before coming in or if you're comfortable with an online order. As has been said in some of the other Yelpers' reviews, I too appreciate the knowledge and skill that the staff has, particularly when it comes to fitting. My husband is a Cordovan collecter, he has over 50 pairs of them. We had purchased so many shoes all over the states. This is the worst place that we even met. We placed an oline order with our prepay cards that we purchased in local groceries shops with small cash. The day after, we received a call from a guy named Jeffrey and asking us why we purchased and used multi small amounts of prepay cards within an unfriendly attitude. I was surprised that he asked that. We got money and we can use it the way we like, isn't it? Anyway, the store did charge our cards and send the shoes to us. BUT, we received another call by the same person, Jeffrey again. He claimed that we are thiefs and stolen somebodies' cards to purchase. I was shocked that he made that unreasonable claim on us. I asked him where this came from, he siad he is not going to tell me and commanded me to send the shoes back right away, otherwise he will call the police. I tried to provide the receipts and the cards that we carried but he refused to see them and threatened me. He googled our address on the map and stated that he knew exactly where we live. It was a really uncomfortable conversations and I didn't want to talk to him anymore. So endding up, I told he to call the police and I am more than welcome to show the police the proves. This guy was being an asshole over the phone. I'm not sure if he's the boss or just saleman. If he's the boss, he totally don't know how to treat customers. You don't call your customers thiefs and threatened them. If he's a saleman, he definitely needed to be fired because of his unprofessional behaviour. Overall, it is an extremely horrible purchase experience. I wish there's a zero star option then I can rate that instead of one. So people, I warn you, STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE if you don't want to have nightmare! read more

Stopped in today for a quick stop to replace a pair of beloved excellent quality dress shoes. Was pleasantly greeted and shown the entire line of shoes in the styles that I was looking for. Got a really great pair of Santoni's that are going to make me happy for a long while. Proprietor reports that they back all their shoes for life, and any issues are handled right away. If you want to plunk down some good change for a pair of high-quality shoes this might not be a bad place to do it. Disagree with the other poster that says that good shoes are just easily found in the mall. I'm done throwing money away on the trash you find in malls. read more

We were on a quest for black quasi-fancy shoes and we thought that the best place for Cole Haan's was the Cole Haan store. Not so much... I enforced that we should try some other shoes on, and Sherman Bros was the closest place. Though it's on an inauspicious street and doesn't look like much from the outside, they've got a great selection and a knowledgeable staff. Black shoes mission accomplished. I'm not sure what makes a good shoe store. As someone bred in the suburbs, good shoes are usually only as far away as the mall. In the city, things are trickier. Sure the luxury of options is a bonus against cookie cutter mall stores, but you have to be willing to hunt through the smaller stores that might only have a few options. Sherman Brothers is like that. Only their options aint that great. I passed by and was tempted to stop due to their window display. It wasn't anything impressive, but a lovely thing with a gorgeous accent who was smoking outside of Oscar's asked me if this was the greatest shoe store in Philadelphia. She had noticed in her many smoke breaks that an exceptional number of people were drawn in by the display. Curious, we went inside to uncover the truth. Needless to say, there was no payoff. No money shot. We were left doubtful and unfulfilled. There was no noise of any kind in the place, which creeps me out big time. if you are selling guns or porn, something that really sells itself, you can probably get away with no music, but in the end, we were left with nothing but old man shoes and a big empty, quiet room. There was one sad looking Al Bundyish employee, but even if he was the Gordon Gecko of selling shoes, I still would not be walking out of there with tassled shoes (of which there was an unusual lot). Everything else that didn't have tassles reeked of boring conformism. There was nothing in the place that allowed the slightest exhibition of flair or style. We left quickly, never to return. *I have been advised by my new shoe shopping friend (and seasoned Yelpster) that taking the bus down south to "The Shit Connor" is definitely the better way to go. read more

Rude Service. Period. My wife and I are both professionals, but being our day off, we went into Sherman Bros in casual clothes. Big mistake. When we walked in, there was only one other gentleman in the store. I picked up a shoe on sale for $200, and sat down to wait for the salesman to assist me. We were not greeted or acknowledged once. As I waited, about 4 men came into the store dressed in business attire. They were greeted, and when the salesman finished helping the first customer in the store, he proceeded to help, size, and fit one of the businessmen who came in after me. I was in the store for a good 20 minutes. I walked out in disgust...without trying on the pair of shoes I was very interested in buying. Poor service. I'll bring my business elsewhere. read more

So Goldilocks ended up at Sherman Bros on Sansom where he found juuuuuust the right pair. We've walked by the window several times, which always has a wide range of shoes on display. Entering the store our first impression was that it was a bit dated and sparse. However, upon closer inspection Sherman Bros did stock a wide variety of prices ($100 to +$600), brands, and shoes. Even though we perused the entire store, we found what we needed on the sale counter nearest to the door. I had an exceptional experience buying a pair of Alden shoes online from Jeffrey at Sherman Brothers. I have difficult to fit feet: they're narrow and low-volume, and I also wear orthotics. Thus, sizing is always a bit of a gamble. I called and talked to Jeffrey on the phone, and he answered my every question. I ordered a pair of boots in 10.5C. When they arrived, they unfortunately didn't fit. I called Jeffrey, and he arranged for exchange and talked me through the various fit options. I placed a new order for the same boots in 11C. I received the exchange in short order, and Jeffrey waived the shipping charge. The new boots fit great. Probably the best shoe buying experience I've ever had. I was the only one in the store so got personalized service in terms of trying on different shoe styles. They have a good selection of high end, hand-made italian shoes. There was also a clearance section that had great deals on Cole haan, Johnston and Murphy, Clark's, etc. When I bought my shoes he took a look at the old raggedy ones on my feet and threw in a free shoe polish and said half jokingly "if you don't open the polish in one month you should return the shoes and the polish". It was very comforting that he genuinely cared about the shoes like he was giving away a puppy for adoption. Will definitely come back here again. Just fyi there were not many options in terms of selections for sneakers so if you are looking for sneakers, especially running shoes, I would go elsewhere. read more

I bought a pair of cordovan Alden's here based on excellent service and knowledge. ($700+ shoes?). The gentleman truly knew shoes and pointed out proper sizing info I rarely see from shoe store staff these days. I visit some months later, another gentleman ignores and plays with his computer and when I ask a question, could not be bothered to walk over to the shoe rack and wants to continue playing with his computer. He may be the owner, staff, who knows. Anyway, I firmly ask for assistance and he obliges, later, conversation turns more positive and I get some good advice. A store like this can only survive based on superior customer service. This store offers a very mixed bag of service quality from excellent to terrible - although all knowledgeable. Since Alden's are sold in many places, it may be awhile before I come back to this store - a shame despite its convenience. read more

Can't understand some of the negativity revolving around some of the reviews of this store. Sure, they specialize in conservative (grown-up) shoes, and many of the loafers do indeed bear tassels. So? However, I also saw a knockout pair of brogues (or wing-tips, if you prefer) in a great shade of olive green, others in gray, and saw pairs in the window with fluorescent orange trim and laces, so I would imagine that should satisfy the need for flair while simultaneously presenting an image of sophistication. Salesman Josh Rubin was extremely helpful, and when I indicated my price point parameters Josh proceeded to custom fit me in a great looking pair of black brogues, presenting me with two finalists which met my wide-foot specs. It was my first visit to this shop, but I will come back and maybe up the ante for an even better pair next time. read more

I had dealings with this shoe store that was not very positive. I bought shoes that were delivered in March, 2020. I was advised since everything was in lockdown due to the Covid 19 to wear the shoes in my home for a few days to see if they fit. I returned them for a credit but was told that the soles were scuffed. When I mentioned that I was advised by the owner to wear them for a few days I was told that they would not issue a credit. I disputed the charge with Citi Bank . Sherman Bros. wrote a statement to Citi , now claiming I wore the shoes outdoors . It appeared to me that the merchant n Citi we're acting in collusion with one another since Citi Card based its response on the statements of this merchant. This process has taken 8 months to reach a conclusion. In that time , Sherman Bros never saw fit to return the shoes n had the nerve to suggest that they might be able to "jimmy" the shoes so they would fit.I suggest that anyone doing business with this store be very careful of any recommendation they make . My experience illustrates that they have a difficult time backing up their recommendations. I hope this will help prevent other customers from being financially hurt by this company. It will be interesting to see if the shoes that didn't fit are ever returned to me. As an aside, I will never use Citi Card again and will be canceling all of my dealings with the bank n it's credit card division after I pay off the money owed for the 2 prs. Superb service and technical knowledge. I simply sit, said what I was looking for (very comfortable dress shoes), and shortly after I had 5 personalised options in front of me. In other stores, I am often given many more. The shop assistant was clearly good at reading people. Of the 5 options, there were two that were simply great. Usually, I am indecisive about a few shoe options that are ok, but in this case, I had some trouble deciding between two that were very comfortable and beautiful. I purchased a pair of Alden shoes from Sherman Brothers, first they sent me the wrong shoes, and then because I did not return the shoes in 30 days they will not exchange the shoes I originally purchased, nor will they take the product back or refund my purchase. I've only had that experience from one running shoe store. Also, the gentleman really knew a lot about the shoes...build quality, the factory, warrantees, and offered to ship since i was in Philly for work. I don't normally post reviews about stores, mainly because I find that too often I am underwhelmed to say the least; however, Sherman Brothers has exceeded my wildest expectations and brings back my faith in something called customer service. I am in the army and was looking to purchase an alternative to the cheap-looking standard issue Bates Chorofram low-quarters. Looking around and doing some research I decided to purchase some Allen Edmonds patent leather oxfords. I placed the order and expected to receive them shortly. Unfortunately, the impatient person I am, looked at my Sherman Brothers account the next day and saw that the shoes would be backordered. Of course, I was a little upset because I had hoped to receive the shoes before a formal event I had coming up in a few weeks. I immediately got on the phone and called Sherman Brothers. The quality of customer service I received from then on was superb. They literally bent over backwards to contact the manufacturer and try to get me the shoes expedited out of the factory so that I would have them in time for my event, even going so far as to change my delivery address to the location of the event. Needless to say, Sherman Brothers worked their magic and got me the shoes almost as fast as if they had been in stock to begin with. I learned that in regards to Alden Cordovan shoes, when it is very important to have the extra room, because the leather stretches so little.
