I've heard he's the best ninja photographer out there in the Bay Area from various sources. After receiving our wedding photos the other day, I can concur he is. I remember each minute of my wedding day and after reminiscing, I honestly don't remember seeing him. But, the pictures don't lie! He has every angle of each moment. What's crazy is that he has a shot behind me, and the next minute he's in front of me. What's crazier is that I don't even remember him taking those shots. Besides being invisible, he has a keen eye for artistic shots. One quality of great photographers is that they forgo the flash function and use natural light. In his 15-20 years of service, he must have mastered that craft along with physics (the one dealing with light). I'd say natural light shots make the photos realistic. Adding frosting to the cake, Sherman says he barely do any post-processing work. A photographer who can pull off those shots without too much photoshopping deserves a 3-star michelin award (the highest a restaurant can receive). Sherman Chu is really solid and great to work with. The man is a camera ninja with no fewer than three cameras strapped to his chest at any time. He works fast and he works right, and he's very smooth in crowds and won't put anyone off. I had a big wedding and in retrospect wish we had hired two photographers, but Sherman is great, great, great at shooting people and that's what he focused on for us. I think my favorite shot was a portrait he took of me getting my red lipstick put on. We had a soulful connection moment and the shot is full of feeling. He also got a specail shot of me coming in the door with my dads. We had rain on our wedding day and the light was difficult, but Sherman had great strategies for dealing with both. Sherman is a ninja wizard photographer. We booked him pretty much as soon as we got engaged because we'd seen his magic capturing multiple family and friends' weddings. He certainly did not disappoint! Our wedding photos are stunning. He has an excellent eye for composition and lighting, and he put everyone at ease during the portraits. But candid photos are where he truly shines. Sherman is the BEST at capturing organic moments big and small, seemingly from multiple perspectives though it's supposed to be humanly impossible to be in two places at once. I think it's funny that 5 stars on Yelp! is equivalent to "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" because that is exactly how I feel about having Sherman document my wedding. People told me during the planning process, "Don't skimp on the photographer--you'll regret it when it's over" I kind of got it, but not completely until after the wedding. I had a full wedding weekend and still wasn't able to take it all in. All of this darned money and planning, and it goes by so fast. Sherman captured moments I couldn't see, or couldn't fully appreciate at the time. In my mind's eye, the photos are truly priceless. Sherman has his own style, which both my husband and I really like. This is not magazine photography--a poetic shot of shoes on the window sill (although he can do some of those if you ask specifically). This is true photo journalism at it's best. I hired Sherman to do my engagement photos and wedding day photos. As you can tell from his other reviews he is an excellent photographer with a great sense for candid shots. If posey pictures on your wedding day (not engagement photos) are what you are looking for then Sherman will tell you that he isn't the right photographer for you. But if you love candid shots where you can really get a sense of the emotions of the day then Sherman is the guy for you. In terms of equipment, he carries multiple cameras on him as he is walking around taking photos so he doesn't have to mess with changing lenses. Wow. We just got our photos back from Sherman and they are stunning. He's the real deal: professional, talented, and honest. He's so good, you just forget that he's even in the room. Sherman photographed our engagement session and our wedding. He was great to work with from the very first meeting, and we booked him almost immediately. On top of being a talented photographer, he's just a really nice guy. Our first photo session was for our engagement photos, about three weeks before our wedding. The shoot was fun, and the shots that Sherman captured were nothing short of amazing. I had friends comment that they felt like they were intruding on our personal moments, because the photos made it look like there was no one there but the two of us. At the wedding, Sherman made everyone feel very comfortable. He took a few portraits that we wanted captured, but most of the day was Sherman doing what Sherman does. When we got our photos back (very quickly, btw), you'd have thought there were three photographers shooting our wedding, because he was EVERYWHERE. We had what appear to be the same shots from several different angles, with different lenses. I have no idea how he did it, but he did it, and that's all that matters. And the best part was that, even though he was everywhere, he was practically invisible. For the majority of the day, I had no awareness of being photographed. It's now two weeks after the wedding, the food is gone, the guests have left town, but the photos are still here. Photography is what you have left when the day is over, so don't miss an opportunity to work with the best photographer you possibly can. We had a great experience with Sherman from start to finish. He was the first and ended up being the only photographer that we spoke with. From the first conversation we had with him, we could tell that he would provide exactly what we were looking for. We loved Shermans style and his take on photography as a whole. My biggest reservation about Sherman was that I thought that we really needed two photographers, but he proved himself to be able to get all the shots without anyone else. Sherman's prices also seem to be very competitive. He's definitely not cheap, but compared to a lot of photographers I think you get great quality for your money. In looking through our photos the one thing that stands out is how much they truly capture the feeling of the day. I relived every moment in looking through those photos, every bit of anxiety, excitement, and joy. It was very important to us not to see each other before the wedding and we both have big families, so the family photos during the cocktail hour definitely got a bit long and tedious. We didn't get through our whole list of portraits that we wanted so we had to finish some during the reception. This didn't turn out to be that big of a problem and we ended up cutting several off this list which was fine as portraits weren't the top priority for us. If they had been and we had made that clear, i'm confident that Sherman would have helped us to make sure to prioritize those. "A picture is worth a thousand words"....but with Sherman's amazing talent, make that a million words! His work is exceptional! It will move you. What more do you need in a photographer, really? My partner and I hired Sherman to photograph our same-sex wedding in September at the Bently Reserve in San Francisco. Sherman made instant points by not only having photographed same-sex weddings before (it was a non-issue, as it should be) but also had photographed at the Bently. His rates are very reasonable - always a plus. I am the first to admit that I am a pretty "discerning" customer....if that's you too - you have nothing to worry about! Sherman took a TON of pics (600+) that captured every special moment of the day and was very accommodating with what we asked of him in terms of the types of shots to get, when and where. When it comes to the photographic "style" - leave that up to him as that is where he shines. He really knows how to capture emotion with the best lighting (no flash...YES), angles, focus, composition, balance, etc....all with a modern photojournalistic approach (which I LOVE). And then there is Sherman's personality: very laid back and personable, but also assertive when it counts - to get the right shots at the right time from the right position! As another reviewer mentioned, a videographer ended up being cut from our wedding prioritization list. But in the end, Sherman's work is so strong, captured the feeling and emotion so well, that not having a videographer became barely even regretful....the still pics are THAT strong. Sherman also gives you complete rights to the pics to do what you want with....we liked that. We could not be happier with our incredibly special, magical day...all captured perfectly and beautifully by Sherman.
