Moved into a condo on the river with floor to ceiling windows so decided to decorate in a clean,…read moresimple mid-century Mod style. Which by the way is vastly different than my previous Old English Tudor. To give my powder room personality and a WOW factor, I decided to wallpaper the small room rather than do a tile application which would have tripled the cost. My contractor recommended this Miller Paint location saying they had the best wallpaper selection in Portland. I didn't want the garish wallpaper of my youth and had a particular idea in mind. Enter Karen, the Wallpaper Goddess. I described a large, bold, chevron pattern in shades of gray and gray-blues. Karen walks to a wall loaded with books, picked out three, flipped to a few pages and I said, stop, that's it, that is what is in my head! Went home and put the book in the powder room and immediately called Karen and placed the order (Candace Olson design.) Karen even helped me find an installer. Next I decided to do an accent wall in my Master bedroom. Again, I had something very specific in mind. So specific I was contemplating hiring an artist to paint the wall. When I described the design concept to Karen she said, you don't have to hire an artist, you are describing Cork wallpaper. Again she goes over to the huge assortment of books, selects a few, opens to a page and on the first try, there was the exact pattern I had envisioned, exactly like a pic I clipped from a magazine and showed Karen. Ordered it on the spot. (Another Candace Olson design.) Three times a charm and so when I decided that I needed one more accent wall, this time in the foyer, I came back to see the Wizard. I described a wall that would have texture, colors and reminiscent of sand on the beach, with specs of shiny gray to pull in the color of the opposing walls and to provide a subtle sparkle. Karen said, do you mean you want Mica? I said I don't know what Mica is, I just know what is in my head. She brings me a book, and once again, right on the money. Seriously, how does she do this? Karen is incredible! She has also helped me pick out paint colors to work with existing tile and carpet. Nailed it every single time. Karen thinks I'm amazing because I pick out wallpaper on the first try and some people spend weeks coming and going with arms full of wallpaper books. Well, I know what I want and Karen magically produces it, so no need to waste time! Decisive is my game. In addition to her talents, Karen is super nice to work with. I'm bummed that my house is completely done as we made a good team! Don't be afraid of wallpaper. The designs these days are incredible and they can transform your space. Go to Miller Paint, grab some popcorn on the first floor, and walk up the steps to the wallpaper area and let Karen do her magic. Oh, and all the people working in the paint area are also professional, friendly and helpful. Great staff all the way around! Wish every store was like this. There is a huge parking lot so parking is a breeze, and they carry your paint and purchases to your car. Tell Karen I sent you!

Customers wait outside the store, 6 feet apart on the clearly marked yellow Xs; there is a separate line for those picking up prepaid orders. They are limiting the number of customers in the store so once inside, it's easy to get what you need and check out. Note, they are taking credit cards only. Another great precaution they have implemented is that upon entering, everyone is asked to use the hand sanitizer they provide. Thank you, Pearl Hardware! Even though they are located in the Pearl, don't worry about finding or having to pay for street parking; they have their own small lot in front of the store making it super convenient for those of us not in walking distance. Yesterday I stopped in to pick up a 4-pack of aBlind Cord Wraps to keep my cords from banging against the window when the wind blows. Oh the problems I have! Amazing all the little "projects" I'm completing during these days of Quarantine. Or more accurately said, I'm seeking out projects since my house is spotless, appliances are sparkling inside and out, summer flowers have been planted, and closets and drawers have been "Marie Kondo'd" and then some. Pearl carries all of the regular hardware store merchandise and then some, especially in regards to houseware, garden decor and even some home decor items like candles, cloth napkins, trinkets. The variety in each department has more breadth and uniqueness, even whimsical and quirkiness, than your average hardware store. That speaks to me! Yesterday I was so bummed that I couldn't browse and touch and actually shop because as we all know, during the pandemic it's about getting what you need and leaving. Man, did this make me yearn for a day of shopping like in the old days, 2 months ago, pre-March 23, 2020. Paid for my item and left so another customer could enter the store. Going forward, I need to remember that every errand now requires waiting in line and I need to build that into my outing schedule. No more in, out, done. Covid-19 is teaching us Patience, among many other things, during this wake-up call to the world. Today I have at least 15 minutes accounted for on my wide open calendar as I install these blind cord wraps. Grateful.

Prices are competitive, and they offer great discounts for regular customers. The staff suggested their in house credit card so I signed up for their store credit card, which only requires a soft credit check. I've bought mostly paint, caulking, and more here, and the quality is always pretty good. I used to shop around, but now I go exclusively to Sherwin-Williams. I Highly recommend.

Sherwin-Williams is obviously a big chain store, so the experience and products can only vary so much. However, this store's employees were efficient and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, it's in a weird location that's kind of hard to get to. The small parking lot is sandwiched by many-lane, quick-moving roads. for ease of access I would go to other stores, unless I were already in this area or they had a product that was out of stock elsewhere. As with any Sherwin-Williams, I recommend keeping an eye out for their 30-40% off sales that happen periodically throughout the year.

They are an "authorized Benjamin Moore Retailer" so they carry that line of paint, stain, and supplies to apply it. They pride themselves on how much they stock (so they rarely tell you they don't have what you need) and their well-trained employees (so you're able to get the help and answers you need).

We've always been 100% "Team Sherwin Williams." My mom has used Sherwin Williams for years; so have…read moremy husband and I. But, when it came time to do some touch-up paint on our 1928 bungalow, we decided to use the same brand that had been used by the previous owner: Rodda. Luckily, we had some old paint cans on hand, so Rodda was able to make us new gallons of paint to the same specifications as the old paint. The new Rodda paint is, of course, bolder and brighter than the aged paint. But it still looks really good. Even better, the Rodda applied like butter! It self-leveled, leaving very few drip marks. (Our beloved Sherwin Williams trim paint, on the other hand, left a ton of drip marks and imperfections.) The Rodda cured really well, even though we were applying it in rare dry spells during a rainy and cold fall. We're huge fans of Rodda now, and will use them for all our exterior paint in future!
