Two stars for selection only. I've been in the store 4 or 5 times, and each time I'm unfortunate enough to get the same person 'waiting' on me, and this person is just not nice. Cranky, won't crack a smile, is short w/answers, and now I get home and was given the wrong paint. Right color, wrong finish, plus it's exterior and I specifically said it was for a kitchen. And the best part about this latest visit is right in the middle of my telling this person what I needed, they moved to another customer behind me and asked another associate to help me. That's it, I'm done trying with them, now it's only Miller or Home Depot paint for me. read more

Best paint store in Portland. Period. This place has a great selection and the staff is always ready to help you get what you need. They also are great at giving you ideas if you are feeling like you could use a little help. They were super helpful with me looking at interior paint for my house as well as a whole new make-over for the outside. From classic colors to bold bright and fun colors this place has everything. They have a good selection of wood stains in a large variety including dark greys and blues. They have all the small things you may need to get your project done as well. Brushes, trays, tape, etc. They can keep you in their computer system with name, address, and colors you buy anytime you come in. That way if you ever forget what color or need more they can find it in the system. read more

Staff are helpful and don't mind the reasonably behaving small person roaming around the aisles, which allowed me to take the time I needed. They provide big paint samples, which is great for seeing what the colors look like in situ without painting polka dots of paint all over the place. read more

This place is paint nirvana. They are an exclusive Benjamin Moore shop, so they have top quality product. I realize painting is not really a man or a woman thing; it is a unisex activity in its own right, but this shop is set up so beautifully that I just feel like they had women in mind when they created it. Walking in the front door, this is not your typical utilitarian paint shop. It feels much more like an interior design center, complete with collaboration tables where you can sit down and peruse books of much larger sample sheets. You are not restricted to the tiny 1x2 sample chips here, though they do have them as well. They also have on-site color consultants (Monday through Saturday 11 - 3) who are happy to direct you toward color palates and even more sample books. Plus, they have over 3000 small jars of samples that you can purchase and bring home to try on the wall. No more purchasing a quart here and a quart there to determine which color you want. I bought their "Affinity" fan deck, a paint sample deck of muted tones that all go so well together that you could basically blindly and randomly select multiple colors in the deck and they would all manage to somehow work together. This is such a cozy, comfortable little store--it's more an experience than a shop. If you are feeling indecisive (and who isn't, at a paint store?) you can sit down at a table and really take your time, comparing paint chips to items you brought with you (yes, bring items with you, so that you can can really imagine your house!). What luxury. Also, for $1.00, you can buy a large-ish sample card to take home, and when you come back to buy your real paint, every $1.00 will be credited towards the purchase. Awesome. Also great is the fact that, if you come at the right time, a paint consultant is available. Ours was incredibly patient and friendly, but didn't come up with any color choices that blew our minds, so we ended up choosing a color that I found on the internet myself, and (I am loathe to admit this) got it mixed at a competitor, whose paint we know and love. read more

Let me start out by saying that I LOVE Benjamin Moore paint. I am an architect and I think they have the most beautiful, comprehensive color palate available in paint. I think Benjamin Moore paint is the best quality you could put on your walls and they offer more low and no VOC paint then any other paint manufacturer out there. So, with all that said I am extremely disappointed in this "flagship" store. The two men working there are not pleasant, they try to be but it comes off as very fake and insincere. I have spent a few thousand dollars on paint at this store and the single time I had an issue with their paint mixing they gave me a very hard time about it and made me feel stupid as if it was my fault their color didn't match the color I needed. The main guy, don't know if he's the owner, has no people skills and gets a little too emotional to be in sales. They offer no discounts to people in the trade other than contractors which seems crazy since as an architect I am the person responsible for specifying Benjamin Moore and encouraging my clients to insist their contractors actually use this paint. In other words, the contractor buys the paint because the architect and designer request it. But this clearly has not occurred to the people running this store. I do not plan on returning to Kaleidoscope for my future painting needs, there are other stores that carry BM paint and from my experience care much more for their customers. read more

I purchased paint from the "big box" stores and even the well known private brands, but Kaleidoscope Paint is by far my favorite place to purchase paint. Samples for every color? Awesome! It is something to behold - 3000 color samples in this giant rack. Color matching that is accurate? Finally someone who cares as much about doing it right as I do. Having someone who can explain differences in rollers and brushes, and who can help me find the right paint and color - worth the trip to the store. This place is great. I'm not much of a painter (ok, I hate painting). I went in here because I had read good things about B. Moore paint, and I absolutely wanted to avoid the Depot. I was driving myself crazy trying to pick a white paint. These folks were SO helpful. He asked me about what kind of white I was thinking of, then pulled a bunch of samples and started quizzing me- this one or this one? Until we finally drilled down to one I really thought I liked. He sent me home with that sample (tiny sample jars are amazing, instead of having to buy a quart) plus 3 others to try, and sure enough, I liked the one he suggested best (Simply White if you're wondering...) I went back and they walked me through all of the goods I would need, sold me what I needed and only that. I've been back since to get door paint and wall texturizer and each time got a thorough and patient lesson on how to do what I needed to do.
