Miller has been my goto for years, but most of their paint (except Evolution) isn't that impressive. Two guys at Powell Paint were very informative and patient, while another was just too amped up. Prices seem better than at Miller, and probably a little more than big box. A custom order match did take much longer than promised, but I'll just chalk it up to a one off. read more

If you care about quality, forget about Orange Depot, buy your paint here! Benjamin Moore covers better (potentially fewer coats), flows nicely, and is more durable. Unfortunately, it's quite a bit more expensive. The color consultant really knows her stuff and saved us when we were stuck. read more

I will raise this to five stars once they get their PPE together. I've been in there twice now during the pandemic and both times different employees have either been wearing a mask that was sagging with nose exposed or wearing a mask with vents in them. I'll cut them some slack on the masks with the vents because a lot of people don't seem to know that those don't actually protect other people. It only allows the person wearing the masks to breathe better. Which kind of defeats the purpose of wearing a mask. Having said that the service has been good both times and they move quickly. read more

We visited this location on the 4th of July (awesome that they were open) to decide on new paint colors for the exterior of our home. After a brief wait we were able to speak with a professional color consulant Benjamin Moore hired to visit this location who was a tremendous help. The other staff were courteous and helpful as well. I'm not sure how frequently the color consulant is there, but I highly recommend utilizing the service when making a large investment in the exterior of your home. read more

So, this place is legit. I am up from Austin redoing a summer home and we had a contractor screw up the paint. I'm in inner SE and drove by this place, seeing they have Benjamin Moore and are clean, neighborhoody, and well outfitted I knew it was a score. Then there is Jared who is awesome. He not only was helpful about the paint, he FOUND ME A PAINTER. I told him we had a screw up and needed someone soon and he had the guy call me before I had made it the 6 minutes to my house. WTF?! Super nice guy and very customer service focused. These guys will get my business on every house I remodel in PDX in future. Oh and there was a design consultant there helping people pull their colors and making suggestions. COME ON!!! Do not go to Home Depot go here. read more

I love this place! We've consistently stayed with Benjamin Moore paint through many years of trying others that we ended up not being satisfied with. The guys here are patient, friendly, SO knowledgeable....a pleasure to do business with. The color consultants are fantastic....no need to try any place else. Since moving to SE Portland, I did try to check out others closer to the home, but the Sherwin Williams personnel on Woodstock/SE 52nd were too busy talking to each other to care to even offer assistance. This year, we vowed to get our house exterior painted. We had been making this vow since having moved in two years ago, but life is expensive. We got the interior painted and new carpet upon moving in, and those were the most important things. There's such a list of things to get done here- farming the front yard and annihilating the lawn (wasteful patch of weeds), new fencing, fixing the deck; oye vey. Our handiman who was overseeing/conducting the project told us to get our paint from Benjamin Moore, so we went in and, with the help of the color specialist (who knew how many mistakes could be made by picking the wrong white for a trim when you have white vinyl windows? She saved us a LOT of trouble!) landed on a beautiful green base with bright white trim. Yelp had a 20% off deal with these guys, so we printed out the coupon and took it in and made the order- Five gallons green, one gallon white in their highest quality paint. It ended up at around 200 bucks even, and the wonderful guys at Benjamin Moore allowed us to hang onto the coupon just in case we needed to buy more paint to finish the project. When we painted our interior, the cost was outrageous, but we'd gone with Rodda. I can't say that it wasn't a typical price for good interior paint, especially when we're doing accent walls, different colors in bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathrooms, plus priming the God-awful fire engine red that was once our living room and all of the hideous dark brown particle-board looking doorways. Still, we found Benjamin Moore to be far more helpful, welcoming, and overall a perfect experience. The color is beautiful and rich, and we couldn't be happier. We plan to put a cedar siding in the A-frames of the house to accent the green and give the house a deeper look later on- our stains will be purchased through BM for sure. I can't say one bad thing about these guys. I'd totally send our friends, even our cheap friends (they're almost all cheap) to them! read more

You cannot get better service than this store. My color samples got mixed up but I was out of time. The painters were going to get the paint and start the next morning. I called at ten minutes before closing, and I was not a happy camper. Dave, the manager, made it right by delivering the paint within the hour. You just don't get that kind of help any more. I'm just going to back up what the other reviewers have said. I don't buy my paint anywhere else because of the superb customer service and the high quality products these guys carry. I have several painter and contractor friends that all buy their painting supplies at Powell Paint Center. I've learned the hard way that buying cheap paint is NOT worth it. The painters hate it because it doesn't go on easily and in the end it doesn't last so you have to pay for more paint, more painting time. Don't come to this store to buy their product if you have brown skin, brown eyes and driving a car with outside state licence plate. A week before I went to this store, my wife who's white went to bought a quart of paint was told and remember 100% the price for a gallon was $43 but bought a quart instead. A week later I came to this store and meet the one of the employee with goatee on his white face. I show him the one quart paint and told him wanted to purhase one gallon instead. I assure him the price was $ 43, that was the price was told by the other clerk to my wife. Hence, he told me the price was $56 and not lowered the price at all, He was smiling and acting nothing to be fixed. in my opinion he was using discrimination toward me. These people know their paint. We have been here twice: once to buy mold-resistant bathroom paint and once to buy chalkboard paint as a gift. Both times we were given useful service and advice. The prices are a little higher than what we're used to paying at a big box home improvement store. Those who know more about paint than I do suggest that it's worth it and I can see that. I think my price fixation is caused by the fact that there are always additional fees on the receipt that I don't notice until I get home. If I could just remember to ask about those while I'm in the store, maybe I'd be less annoyed about it. read more

The people working at Powell Paint have answers to all your questions... we've been going there for most of the 25+ years we've had our home, and they have always had the products and advice we've needed. Great service, and though they no longer carry Pratt & Lambert, the quality of whatever they have in stock has always been terrific. And one of the best purchases I've ever made anywhere was to follow their suggestion and try Purdy brushes.... ours appear to be indestructible, clean up like brand new, and make for much better results with every paint job. I have no connection with Purdy, aside from being a satisfied customer, but I'd suggest their products as the best housewarming gift ever. Unlike, say, designer sunglasses, a good paint brush costs more, but is truly worth paying extra for. read more

I am in the process of opening my first brick-and-mortar business and was completely freaked out about paint colors; I needed to match a color on my website, but the people at Home Depot couldn't even come close. So I got some help from Mark at Powell Paint, who completely saved the day! He gave me super realistic expectations about the difficult color with which I presented him (explaining the whole "pigment vs dye" thing), and then blew those expectations out of the water. It looks GREAT! So then I went back to get some paint for a concrete floor. I ended up deciding on a two-part epoxy paint because Mark assured me it would stand up to damn-near anything and that I wouldn't have to re-paint it for at least several years. I got help choosing the perfect shade of grey from a lovely woman (whose name I sadly did not get), and went for it. The floor looked amazing when I first put it down...and then immediately proceeded to chip/rub/scrape off! The epoxy was a real pain in the butt, required industrial-grade respirators, and cost me $200 for a 450-square foot space. It's been exactly one week since I painted it, and I can see the old color peeking through in probably 20 different places on the floor. I'm SO disappointed! So, great job color matching, and Mark could not have been more friendly or personable. (One of the other guys I talked to there was full-on rude, which was a super bummer.) But the floor paint is a HUGE disappointment. read more

I'm new to Portland (and to fairly new to painting). A contractor friend recommended Powell Paint Center. Actually he said he got all his paint there, so I figured, go where the pros go. My only previous experience with a paint selecting/purchasing process was wandering aimlessly through the long aisles at Lowe's pulling chips and eventually having some teenager mix up a batch of who-knows-what. An impersonal process with imperfect results. I walked into into Powell Paint Center and was greeted with a neighborhoody "Hello! What can we do for you today?" I said I needed to pick some colors to paint a couple rooms and buy some supplies. "Ok, well we'll first we'll set you up with Nancy our color specialist. She'll help you out." Sure enough, I got friendly knowledgeable one-on-one attention. We discussed the rooms, looked at photos, and hashed out ideas. She pulled a variety of swatches for me to try and they were great suggestions. I came back the next day to get pints to test on the walls, and the next day to get my gallons. Each time I received great service. I didn't know places like this still existed! Oh, and you can tell these folks enjoy their jobs and each other. They really seem to have a good time giving each other friendly jabs. read more

I have been there countless times in the last few years working on our old house, both for supplies and paint, and they never disappoint. Good products, we have been very happy so far with the Benjamin Moore and Pratt Lambert paints we have used. If you aren't sure exactly what you need, don't worry. Outstanding customer service! I am a nanny and the dad I work for asked me to stop and get a sample of a certain paint. It was a raining miserable day just before lunch time. I ran in and told them I needed the smallest quantity available of that color and gave them the money. They brought the paint out to the car for me so I didn't have to entertain two tired and hungry kids in the store while the paint was spinning. This is my favorite paint store in Portland. They have a good selection of materials, everything I need for any job I need to do, and they are always helpful and courteous. Although I don't use them very much, the ladies that help pick colors are quite knowledgeable, although they can be a bit overbearing sometimes when you don't want their help. Home Depot is a close second, but I have an account here and they have all of my information, past paints, and so forth. This is very helpful for touch up purchases. read more

I would expect a paint store to be expert at what it sells, but that is not my experience with this store. After receiving a call that the paint I ordered was ready, I waited for an hour while one of the techs repeatedly brought out the wrong paint color, adding and taking away and starting over over in the neighborhood of 10 times. I was polite and appreciative, until what seemed like the guy's manager stepped in and took a look at what he was doing, only to come out and show me the bottom of the can had the recipe on it and tell me that I needed to go to Miller Paint to get the color. No apology, as if I was wrong somehow. Lame customer service, observation, sales, and paint mixing skills if you ask me. read more

I have shopped at Powell Paint since it opened; I used to go in with my dad who owned rentals and bought a lot of paint. The employees of course have changed over the years but the service has been uniformly polite and helpful. As a woman I might have found the contractor atmosphere intimidating at one time but never have. Now I see as many women as men shopping and they have a color consultant who seems to work well with anyone who asks. The products are terrific and the staff people know their products. My Dad was a factory trained BM painter back in the 60s. He literally could lay down a straight line, midwall height, across a room without a sightline/guide/etc. He taught me how to cut in, roll like a pro, and flow Impervo like nobody's business. He was ruthless in following after me correcting my mistakes, but was always good natured about it. Anyhoo, long story short - I used to patronize other BM dealers around Portland, but after time realized PPC really know their stuff about legacy BM paints as well as the new stuff their chemists are putting on the market. Plus they have the eye and talent to color match - better than anyone else. Spend the time and seek these guys out. Doing it any other way is just going to set you back. 5+ stars. read more

If you want quality paint and expert advice, this is the place to go. Paint is their specialty so it's not like buying paint from a big box store like Home Depot, or worse, Fred Meyer (which I did last time I painted my home's interior and regretted it!). I have only a little experience with paint and painting projects, so I felt a little intimidated when I walked in and saw a bunch of guys at the counter. But I don't think I've ever received better customer service. And even though I asked alot of stupid questions, no one made me feel like an idiot, so for this they get 5 stars and my business forever. The paint is of excellent quality, too. I was only going to paint my living and dining room but I had such a positive experience that now I'm going to paint the rest of my home. read more

Robert expertly matched multiple interior and exterior colors from my parent's house, saving me a ton of time and work. Color consultant Brenda really knows what she is doing! As a design professional, I feel like I have a pretty good ability to identify color candidates for a project, but I took my challenging task in and she got to work right away. We had to find a color that would work with two kinds of paving, two kinds of fence cladding, and achieve our vision. Brenda identified the underlying nature of the colors of these materials and knew where to look in the color decks to find appropriate choices. In 30 minutes I had five good choices (with lovely big paint color samples) to show my client. A true professional! Thank you. read more
