We had a great time here with our apartment complex! Honestly was a lot more fun than I expected - of course the event hosted by our management company is not your classic experience here, but we had great instruction from some of the employees there and got to try out a bit of everything. Omg !! This was probably the most fun I've had in a long time! You get a hour or A hour and half reservation!! We walked in and got lucky! What fun! Would I do it again HECK YEA!! Awesome place for a good time with a group. Want to feel like a Viking or at the very least drink a beer and throw an axe? Shield N Sheath is your place. Went for a birthday celebration. Employees were very helpful in explaining technique and safety. You must wear close toed shoes but they have some crocs if you forget yours. Beer, wine, and cider are for sale. The space is a little smaller than other Hatchet places in the Richmond area but spacious enough for multiple groups. Pricing is $35 per thrower for an hour and a half. They have an assortment of axes and also ninja stars (for an additional $5 charge). It's definitely fun and great date night idea! read more

Went to throw axes for the first time for my brothers birthday, and ended up being told to leave halfway through our session. Apparently the owner monitors the cameras secretly from an undisclosed location and will kick you out without a warning or any refund. We were never given a clear explanation of what we did, other than "threw too hard," and overall it was just a really unprofessional and abrupt end to our session. You would think that this company would include these details of the experience into the safety instructions at the beginning of the time slot--which they didn't. You'd think they would include these details in their waiver they had us sign-- which they didn't. We were never told to not throw hard, and the employees were literally laughing around with us until suddenly we were told to leave "because the owner who's watching the cameras said so". No accountability or clear explanation of why we couldn't just correct the behavior and continue throwing. Just a really weird vibe that made this place seem less about teaching people/having a good time, and more about a company pretentiously strong arming us into ending our session early despite their failure to explain arbitrary rules. Would highly recommend finding some other place to throw axes! read more

I have never been axe throwing before, so I was looking forward to trying it out with a group for my friend's birthday. We had an 8:30 pm reservation and after signing in and listening to the safety rules, some people went to get drinks. Turned out the bar stopped serving at 9 pm, an hour before closing. That seemed a little ridiculous. I'm actually happy I didn't buy any alcohol because I was ridiculously overpriced. I already paid $35 to throw, wasn't expecting to pay another $10 for a Blue Moon. There were no obvious signs that I saw that said they stopped serving at that time. We were one of the last reservations and were allowed to stay until closing, but all of the workers were hovering around us with 20 minutes still left, so we felt pressure to leave before it was over. Definitely a "meh" experience for my first time throwing. read more

We were out for a wander Sunday and the staff was so friendly and inviting they lured us in to booking an appointment to throw batorangs on Thursday! We had an amazing time learning from Alex, enjoying the pizza, and having our Batman themed date night. read more

Had a blast throwing axes staff was amazing and welcoming . To top it off I left my keys at the place and walked to a bar nearby not realizing I had until leaving the bar, Shield N Sheath was closed! This is the worst axe throwing spot I have ever been to. First off, who has the nerve to have a tipping option TO PAY FOR YOUR THROW TIME. Yeah you get hit up to tip when you pay at check in. Before anyone has done anything for you at all. At the laughably named "bar" the beers are way over priced. The "pizza" is a tortilla shell with ... not great toppings on it and not much care put into making it and even though they claim to be an IATF spot, they wont let you throw regulation axes. I have brought my axes with me to numerous league axe throwing locations and never been turned away. The reason I got from these people was, "they are sharp, we don't let people throw anything sharp." ... Its an axe throwing place. Yeah, axes are sharp.... wtf? Then we paid for an hour of throwing at 7 45 or something like that. By the time the teacher was done with the rules and regs and what not it was 820 before we ever were allowed to even touch an axe. They close at 9, and did not offer to stay open for even 15 more minutes for us to get our time we paid for and said we had to go. Then on top of it, even though I have no idea why because as far as I knew we were respectful and followed every rule they asked even though we thought some of it was ridiculous, an hour after they closed they sent my friend a text message saying he (and all of us that he was with) were no longer welcome at either of his establishments. With no explanation whatsoever as to why. Fuck DAN the owner, fuck this place, only go here if you want to be ripped off. I am telling every other axe thrower I know what happened here and to avoid this place like the plague. read more
