Went for a craft fair and to check out the brewery while I was there. Finding parking was a pain but we were able to park on the street right around the corner after another car left. There were a ton of tables lined up outside with a variety of vendors. Then you head inside to see even more! Everyone was very kind. Up front there's a large beer selection with a few ciders and seltzers. My husband and dad chose to get a flight of 6 beers where they explained that they take regular beers and spruce them up with different flavors and such. I'm not a huge beer person but I got a cider, forgot the name but it tasted like apple pie, and it was delicious. I also got chips and cheese and although they were your cheap gas station chips with some microwaved cheese they were only $4 and I was happy with them. They were a nice snack while we sat and chatted. The staff was very kind. My only complaint is that the cheese dip cups are smaller than the chips lol, you have to breaks the chips in half to dip them! And they're tiny chips! read more

Most creative brewery in all of Richmond - their flavors are all SO FUN and have such unique ingredients and inspirations. Don't leave without trying the infamous lucky charms beer - it's actually pretty solid! I've been to this location twice. Once for a yoga class and another for the RVA Burlesque Festival. I think they have incredible events here. It's a really great space. It's located in what feels like an office park, but it has a nice outdoor space. The seating inside is also cool with the decor and the windows. The people who work here are incredibly nice. I love the back room with the big barrels. For the RVA Burlesque Festival, the barrels framed the stage very beautifully. I've only tried one drink here and it was the Sangria Sour. It was not for me. They seem to pour a huge amount of syrup/dye in it and it tasted a little too syrupy sweet for my liking. My friend got their cider (I think it's called something like Grandma's Apple Pie) and she really liked it. She said it tasted like Fall and was very comforting. Confession- I was at Strangeways Brewing for the pottery pop up market that was in the back- walking passed barrels to the patio strung lighted area was magical! There is Clayworks Pottery Supply a couple doors down and they coordinated with the brewery for this market while the pottery conference was in town! John enjoyed a flight while I met, chatted and ended up friending a few potters. I even snagged some treasures! Family friendly- there is a patio outside, plenty of games and a large indoor seating area and bar. read more

Four of us had 30 minutes to spend here so we decided to stop and give this place a try. We all wished we had more time! This place is in a small strip mall type of building. There is parking on the side and the rear. There is also indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice this time of year. Most of the outdoor tables had umbrellas. We went in and were served quickly. They have different size pours so you don't have to commit to a large beer! We tried the pilsner and the Helles lager. The lady at the bar was really nice! The Helles beer was quite good! Wanting to try a new brewery in Richmond, I found my way over to Strangeways on New Year's Day. I walked in at about 130 and the place was completely empty except for me and Scott, who was taking care of the bar. He helped me decide on a flight, which I appreciated, they had about 30 beers available. Most were sours and stouts, usually not my thing. I decided on six and he presented them to me in a round tray, it looked like a game of Wheel of Fortune. Probably the most memorable one I had was the Lucky Charms Weiss. Now I've had a Lucky Charms IPA before and it really tasted like marshmallows. This one was different, I could taste the milk and then the cereal separately in the beer. I liked the sour cherry cobbler. I've had a few cherry beers, and they're usually too tart or too sweet. This one had a nice balance of the too, it was a relaxing beer to drink. The Woodbooger, not my thing. It is classified as a Belgian brown ale, but to me it tasted like coffee. I'm sure it would be great for a lot of people, but not my style Also I like an IPA with some dank and the Furrowed Brow delivered. Really good beer. I was charged 3-5 bucks for each 3.5 ounce sample, not too bad. The vibe is a little psychedelic without being too off the wall. The place is a little off the beaten path, but it's worth going to. read more

I love breweries but am not a huge beer fan, so I typically look for the places that have a variety of options- and strangeways does! I got the apple pie cider and it was delicious. I would definitely go back because there is such a variety of different drinks. The space is large with a variety of seating options. When I went, they had live music and a food truck outside, but you could also sit inside and hear the music without it being too loud. Strangeways is aptly named. Their brewery originally popped onto my radar about a month ago when my beer friend traded me a box of Richmond-local beers. Their Uberlin Berliner Weiss was, by far, my favorite of the bunch. So light and lovely...and awesome label art! So when I decided on a whim to casually drive 3.5 hours down to Richmond, I knew a visit to Strangeways was a must. It ended up being our last stop of the weekend before heading home, but it was well worth going a little out of the way to see. Similar to many other breweries, their location is a little funky -- but it works for them. They're at the end of a strip mall away from downtown Richmond. If you're heading to The Answer from the city center, it's a good place to stop along the way. It's also not too far from the Scotts Addition neighborhood, which is brimming with breweries and delicious food options. The weather was gorgeous -- a warm and sunny early spring day -- so we walked inside, ordered flights, and chose a picnic table to imbibe. Keep in mind: You may not want to sit at the very end of the seat if no one else is sitting already...unless you want to induce a see-saw effect. I felt so hefty for a second. For the flights, you can choose any amount up to 10. I couldn't help myself with all their incredible options, so I picked six for my flight: - Smucker's Jelly Uberlin - Sour Cherry Cobbler - Red Sangria - Lücky Charms - Pink Lemonade - Razzle Dazzle Yep. Basically, you'll be in good company if you're not all about bitter brews and insane stouts. Although they do offer several stouts. My friend enjoyed them (and bought some bottles to go) but I stuck to my flight. Red Sangria, Razzle Dazzle, and Sour Cherry Cobbler were my standout favorites. I felt like the jelly fell a little short in potency, and the pink lemonade radler would have been better had I been sitting on a beach somewhere. I understand they also had fruit loop and jolly rancher beers in the past, and I'd LOVE to try those if they bring them back someday. It's worth taking a walk around the brewery before heading out. The operation is pretty large, and they have a diverse stock of beer merch in addition to their bottled to-go section. I only regret not purchasing that 6-pack of Uberlin. Oh well. Great beers! My server was knowledgeable and friendly and the space is basic, but comfortable.

Despite the chill atmosphere, the sweet happy hour deals, friendly servers, and the large variety of beers, I just wasn't into Strangeways. While in RVA from out of town to explore the local breweries, Strangeways drew me in with the creative beer flavors and styles described online. The problem is the taste didn't really live up to the names and descriptions. My wife and I chose a flight of 10 beers. Styles ranged from IPA bitter to Lucky Charms sweet, and not one of the 10 stood out to me. Now, maybe I'm expecting too much, but with some of the local competition around the corner, visiting Strangeways might not be worth it. read more

Strangeways is a very chill eclectic place. It's a brewery where you can kick back and relax with a variety of brew. I'm not a huge beer, IPA, Lager, Local Draft beer type of person. Generally, I drink wine and bourbon. We always get a beer flight so that we can over indulge and taste a variety of beer. My favorite beer is their Mellow Mango! It is sweet and sultry. It tickles my tongue and dances on my tastebuds. This is actually the only one I order. My least favorite is the lucky charms. I first thought of lucky charms as being a green troll related beer. Well it's a little more than green. It actually taste like the marshmallows form lucky charm cereal. Ugh I was not pleased. It was horrible. I usually avoid the marshmallows in my lucky charms because they hurt my teeth. You have to truly love lucky charms in order to love the flavors that this brew embodies. The service is pretty great. It feels weird reviewing a micro-brewery. Yelp is predominately all about food reviews and they don't really serve food at a micro-brewery. Strangeways Brewing is no different in this respect. They had some dude selling pizza out back. But who really cares about food? You come here for the amazing beer. At this time the only thing I have to compare them to are fellow brew bro's Ardent and Hardywood. The taste of beer is so subjective it's hard to be objective. However there are some things that set Strangeways apart from their cousins. For one, the selection at Strangeways is FANTASTIC. In this Yelpers opinion I found the variety to be spot on. Strangeways gets it. The craft beer drinking community isn't all about the hops. Not all of us like enough IBU's to rip your face off. Many of us like smooth beer. Many of us like the flavor of malted barley or the aromatic fruit and spice notes of a Saison. I'm a sucker for cloudy & sour wheat beers. But on occasion I'll roll soft with the "HOP crew" and I rather enjoyed the 45 IBU GWAR Blood. The variety is off the charts and they know it. Well done Strangeways Brewing! You are #1 in my book. This was probably our most peculiar stop in our road trip. Strangeways brewing has a look and feel that grabs you pretty much the second you walk in. This is my type of place. The guy who helped us was incredibly knowledgeable about beer, brewing, and the industry in general... plus, you can see the passion when he talked to you. He spent a good deal of time talking about their beers to the customers before us, and us. That's always a great sign. The taxidermy décor around the tasting room kept us wowing and exploring every inch while we enjoyed our beers. The bier garden outside was comfortable and in a nicely open area. Of all the things we tried, I strongly recommend: Gourd of Thunder Imperial Pumpkin Porter, the Festbier, but most of all the Rallenta Flemish Red Ale! Outsanding stuff. read more

August 2018, 3.5 out of 5. We stopped here during a tour of breweries in the city of Richmond. While strange ways is a bit out of the way, it's definitely worth a trip. We had had a few of their beers at a local brew fest and thought it was worth a shot. It definitely was. They had a wide variety of styles and all of them were pretty solid. I love Strangeways... though I would say before you read on you really need to like sour (tart) beers... because if you don't you will most likely not like Strangeways. Some of my favorite sour beers are Monk's Sour Flemish Ale and Dogfish Head's Festina Peche. So if this is your kind of thing I would read on... if not, you should try out some other breweries and stop reading this altogether:) I've had their Fruit Loops, Banana Runts (sounds odd but even if you don't like banana flavoring I think you will like this as I can't stand most banana flavored things), Sangria, Smuckers, Apple Sour Uberlin (all the uberlins are good) , Most any of their radlers are delicious... they have so many beers I can't remember them all... I'm not too big of a far of the wild sours... as they are pretty funky. I've also had their pumpkin gingerbread nitro stout last season which was delicious and smooth. Anyway if you like sour beers or beers on the sweeter side you will love Strangeways! This is also a great place to bring friends that are visiting... which we did in fact bring a friend recently. Beers on tap are fire. Bought their flight and a goblet of sugar shack somoa something, fantastic. Sugar shack beer was probably the best tasting local beer I've had. Strangeways was...strange. Not necessarily in a bad way, but I get why they picked the name. I'd give It 3.5 stars if I could. The décor is inspired by horror movies & a touch of modernistic art...I think. When visiting breweries I seldom pay much attention to the decor, but it's hard not to notice it here. Still, my server was friendly, and that's all that really mattes to me. The main reason for my visit was it's focus on sour beers. But their beer menu had almost 20 brews to chose from, so those who are looking for something beyond sours won't be disappointed. That said, even as a sour beer fan, nothing particularly struck my fancy. I liked the Melon Sour, but the others were so so. I also went out on a limb for the GWAR blood red ale, but didn't like it at all (serves me right for picking beers based only the name). read more

I went here for a paint and sip. I didnt pay attention to the fact that it was a brewery and I assumed they might also have wine in stock just in case someone asks. Nope. They only had beer.. not really a surprise or a big deal.. just was a let down for me because I dont like beer. I did try one at the recommendation of the bartender.. it was a "smuckers jelly" sweet beer. It was okay, probably as close to a wine taste as can be expected. The paint n sip was expensive... $40... and was a bit of a let down. The instructor was nice, but just not as interactive or fun as I'd expected. It just seemed like alot for a ticket when the supplies provided were so basic. I hope gets better for the next class. We wont be back though. read more

Visited for a live show. We tried a number of beers. Was surprised that many of the beers listed are created by adding flavored syrup to a base beer. We filled a take home growler with one of their red ales. The staff said that this was in the style of some German beers. For example, they use Uberlin Weiss as a base for another beer and add a raspberry flavoring to create a raspberry flavored beer. They had a food truck outside that served burgers, chicken sandwiches, and more at reasonable prices. They sell t-shirts, hats, and other souvenirs. read more
