Useless. Acts like he's doing you a favor just by listening to you. Constantly tells you how busy he is. Basically tells you he doesn't have time to work on your car. Then he gives you a date and time, but can't do it when he promises. Then he drags you along for a couple of weeks, says he will work you in, then he ghosts you by not answering your calls. Meanwhile, your vehicle is getting worse waiting for the repair. There aren't many options in Key West, so I guess people just tolerate this. Definitely a new business model for me. I've run businesses for over 40 years. I can't imagine treating customers like this. He never worked on my car, so I cannot speak to the quality of his work. I won't be going back. I'd rather have a root canal. read more

Steve is a talented guy and employs some good technicians. I recently had Steve rebuild the transmission on my Tundra. 3 days after the rebuild I drove it 2,100 miles out west. So far, all is good! I think he did a good job at a fair price. The repair took 3 weeks which was longer than expected otherwise I would have given him 5 stars. read more

Unbelievable. Drove my little 2002 Cabrio Convertable from Seattle to Key West. It limped in making a racket and vibrating. Called for an appointment Monday morning and got in at 11:00 same day. They drove the car and got it got it on the rack immediately. Quickly diagnosed the problem as loose (and one cracked) bolts on one axle. Fixed it, dropped it down and ran an engined diagnostic. Fixed a couple electrical problems and got my windshield sprayer working again. Test drove it again and I was good to go. Whole thing took a little over an hour. They charged me $80! If he had said $250 it wouldn't have raised an eyebrow and I still would have been thrilled. Fantastic experience. read more

Steve recently did a ton of work on my car--fixed the exhaust, replaced the timing belt, fixed the rear suspension, and addressed some other odds and ends. He is honest and fair with prices, and is a great mechanic. I have read some of the other reviews, and it is true that the work might take some time--but he is the best mechanic in the keys bar none. COME HERE BEFORE ANYWHERE ELSE IN KEY WEST! Wish I could give more than 5 stars. It was 30 minutes before they closed and I called up the shop because I had an emergency and something got stuck in my tire. I was panicking because all of the shops in key west were closed, and I had been to him before, so I knew his work was quality. The owner answered and told me to swing by just so he could check it out, he said depending on the damage and tire he may or may not be able to help me. That gave me a sense of comfort. I carefully drove my car over, he immediately took my wheel off and took this out and it ended up not being any substantial damage. My tire was fine, so he put it back on free of charge out of the kindness of his heart! THANK YOU! I had a really hard time finding a shop that I could trust to get reliable information and a trustworthy price since I moved to key west. My car has gone to shit with the salt water and sitting around more than the past. The ac broke and the tire has gotten many nails in it. Other shops quoted me "maybe" solutions, tried to hold me hostage until I paid them for the diagnosis, and said the price to fix would be over 10x their initial quotes but didnt guarantee their work . Some even tried to quote me higher than the dealership. Literal criminals. But not shifting gears. Fixed my tire quickly and for a very fair price. For the AC, they diagnosed quickly and didn't say it was maybe this or maybe that. Quoted me a price and that's what they charged me. It was less than other places too. Ordered my part without a deposit. Fixed the problem and I have a 2 Year guarantee for anywhere in the country. Seems like Steve's reviews are either icy-cold or red-hot. Our's is the latter. We got stranded this past weekend with a retractable hardtop issue with our Mercedes Benz Convertible. Called Steve late Friday night and he squeezed us in on Saturday morning as promised. The job was fairly involved with diagnostic read-outs and sequencing the activity so there wouldn't be any damage to the roof or trunk. The vehicle was standing in the shop for approx. 3 weeks. We spent several hundred $ to pay Steve for work that was unnecessary and did not help to fix the issue or make it better. Steve was also making excuses that the tool he needed to continue tests took so long to be ordered. We ordered the tool ourselves and it was delivered within 3 business days. After that we have decided to take the vehicle to someone else. It was confirmed that all the work done by Shifting Gears was not needed and had nothing to do with the problem the vehicle had. read more

Buyer beware!! No integrity whatsoever! I went to this business yesterday and Hani tried to sell me a 2011 Nissan Maxima that had a salvage title. He told me that only the front bumper had been replaced. I took it to a collision repair company to make sure the repairs had been done properly before purchasing the car. They took one look at it and said, bring it back! There were literally zip ties holding pieces together and "the worst paint job they had ever seen!" There were bent parts on the frame that were never replaced and a hood that didn't even match the car. The whole driver's side of the car had been impacted and poorly replaced which is not what he told me at the dealership! I brought it back to Hani and told him all the things they found wrong with it and he claimed he didn't know. I found that same car listed on Marketplace today and he is claiming no frame damage! Please do not buy this car!! read more

This is a great shop! My car broke down and after calling 3 shops with no availabilities for weeks this place answered and told me to bring my car in the next day. I got my car in and they looked at it right away and told me what the problem was and that if adding oil didn't fix it then to call back and they would order a new part for me. After a day of driving I had the same problems so I called them and they ordered the part. It came 1 day later and they got my car in and out in a couple hours. Cars running great now and they had very good prices. If you have car issues take your car here these guys are very fast and have awesome pricing. read more

This is the only place I'll bring my car. They always fit me in as quickly as possible and are great at diagnosing problems quickly, accurately and will take the time to explain what's going on. They are honest, fair and don't cut corners. This is one of the few places you can get quality work at a fair price. My only complaint is that their phone doesn't seem to have call waiting so it's often busy but that's a minor inconvenience for such great service. read more

I dont know how I can even give him 1 star. He has had my Jeep for a Month and a half. 6 WEEKS AND STILL HASNT TOUCHED IT. Steve constantly lies and over promises and never delivers. Every time he promises it will be done he acts mad when we call and see if it's done. He always complains about his mechanics not showing up and how he should close the doors. Well please CLOSE THE DOORS. Do yourself a favor and take your car elsewhere. This is the second time he has had my vehicle for over a month. And I initially brought it in as scheduled just for him to park in in the back. I was hesitant to post this as I still dont have my car but after the way he just spoke to my wife I cant hold back anymore. The Keys desperately needs other options for transmission work. read more

While on vacation in Key West our car blew a head gasket. We were fortunate enough to get a referral for Shifting Gears and Steve and Josh were incredibly helpful. Anyone with a mechanical background knows this is a major problem. They were prompt, fair, and diligent in following up on the situation. Came there to fix three things. Heat, window regulator and put thermostat. Car was standing there three weeks, Steve didn't find why car doesn't heat. They scratched my car, somebody stole my cassette decoder. And when they put back the window regulator, they broke the door and broke a tint. Horrible experience! Just don't go there. read more

Don't use this shop ! I had a awful experience with this guys, I replaced the power steering pump on my Mercedes , paid around $ 800 for that, and next week I came back to them because I had some noise coming from steering, and Steve put some more fluid and said that's what it needed. I brought my car to Mercedes Center in Orlando and they had to change the reservoir for the fluid because it was cracked when was removed and GLUED back! Seriously ? Glue for Mercedes ? I would not recommend them to anyone who cares about their car. read more
