I admit to still be in those early stages of grief over this very difficult decision just a few days ago. The house feels empty without him. But you should know that the veterinarian Dr. David Knox leads an extraordinarily compassionate and professional staff. This was on full display as we brought Sammy in for his final visit. Most pugs are easy going comedians. Not Sammy. He had a more, shall we say, aggressive posture. Nothing mean, just his way of letting you know he had a say in what was going on at the moment. And he was opinionated. He carried himself in kind of cocky way. He loved kids and took it upon himself to follow them everywhere in our backyard. He frequently photo bombed himself into pictures of the grandkids. And when they went into the pool, he circled it barking as a warning that pools were dangerous. Of course, he could not swim and evidently thought kids could not or should not, either. He wanted the pack to stay together. My wife and I have had 11 dogs in our 48 years of marriage. None of those dogs loved car rides as much as Sammy, not even close. When he knew he was going on a car ride because we would tell him, he would bark in excitement and run to the car. Sammy's idea of ecstasy was to be sitting in my lap while I drove. Yeah, I know, not the safest thing for him. But the look on his face said he considered it to be heaven. So, on rare occasions, we would indulge him. When my wife would go on an errand, Sammy would invariably come up to me showing concern that she was gone. If we left him at home by himself, we would get an earful of what he thought about that when we returned. Again, not mean, just very, very vocal. I actually have video of him trying to talk. We would leave a doggy bed by the front door with a dog cookie on it when we would leave. In almost every occasion, that cookie would still be on the bed when we returned. He would eat it only after we walked back through the door. At his veterinary visits, he would generally tolerate the handling but when the particular procedure was done, he would commonly give the handler a nip as a "correction", basically saying "don't do that again." And this is where the staff at Companion Animal Health & Rehabilitation Center demonstrated both professionalism and true compassion. They all got to know Sammy and his quirks and clearly loved him despite his best efforts. Dr Knox and Dr Reeder were excellent at providing clear diagnosis, while also giving us the support to our decisions. Adult male pugs have an expected 13-year life span. Sammy, at 15, was clearly in double overtime. It is during the times of inevitable decline pet owners can become anxious and take extraordinary actions. Dr Knox was reassuring without being judgmental. He would acknowledge pet owners would do surprising things to keep their pet alive. Of course, this depends upon one's definition of what living really is. I made it clear to Dr Knox that our objective with Sammy was to minimize any suffering he might be experiencing as the end neared. We know he would endure suffering to stay with the pack. He recommended a sonogram which provided definitive evidence of what was going on inside Sammy's body. The short review was not favorable. And as confirmation, it took Sammy almost two days to recover from the sedation provided to do the non-invasive procedure. I want to give a huge shout out to the staff who were so wonderful to us and Sammy at that final visit. They were truly remarkable giving Sammy lots of love and attention prior to that final injection. While they had given us referrals to traveling vets who do euthanasia at home, I am so glad we went back to Companion Animal & Health Rehabilitation instead. They have a special treatment room with a side door that bypasses the lobby, for those like me who could not contain their grief at that final moment of our pet's life. Of course, they also provide turnkey services for return of the pet's ashes, if that is your wish. It was ours. I cannot recommend these professionals enough for the care they provide. They are remarkable people who you can depend upon to give your beloved pet the care they both need and deserve.

Even when it looks like a full house, I've never had difficulty finding a place to park. Overall, I highly recommend this establishment. At 18 years old, he underwent chest tumor surgery twice, and both times the staff went above and beyond to make sure he was comfortable. The first time my husband and I were so worried all day and then we walked into the office and we saw him up front by the reception desk with a blanket over him so they could keep an eye on him. As Milo got older, we knew our time with him was becoming limited. When we had to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye, every member of the staff treated both Milo and our family with incredible kindness, patience, and gentleness. They made one of the hardest days of our lives a little easier to bear. A week and a half later, my husband and I are still struggling with the loss of him. I am currently 28 and I've had Milo since I was 13. he was our best friend. We just got home today and checked the mail and we had received a sympathy card personally signed by the staff members. Village Vet has been there for us through some of Milo's biggest challenges and through his final goodbye. Their compassion, professionalism, and genuine love for animals are unmatched. Mel, Crystal and Dr. Ray are great! Really all of the employees are great! I'm not sure why people say they are rude. I've never experienced that. Their prices are very reasonable compared to other vets. I highly recommend this vet for your pets. I love hearing them sweet talk my dog when he is there getting treatment. But when I got a chance to go into the back to see my dog, there were a ton of machines and staff despite it being the overnight shift. I immediately felt better after seeing the amount of machines there to take care of all the sick animals. The overnight staff were phenomenal. Plenty of parking too. Even in the busy hours.

I called the vet hospital to make an appointment and asked what they needed from me prior to my first appointment. They told me that the old medical records would be helpful. I got those emailed to me from Molly's former vet and emailed them to WEPH to which I got an acknowledgement email quickly. On the day of the appointment, I showed up and was blown away at how clean and inviting the vet hospital was. I even noticed a fridge with drinks while you wait for your pet. One familiar face from the past was Heather who was super kind and showed me to an exam room. Dr. Pryor walked in and we spent a few minutes catching up and going over Molly's medical history and what her current issues were. Dr. Pryor was honest, kind, and came up with a treatment plan pretty quickly. I agreed to it and Molly was taken to the back. While I was waiting, Heather was nice enough to walk me around the vet hospital and gave me a complete tour since I missed out on the open house. The place was absolutely spotless. I was so impressed that I scheduled future bloodwork and a dental cleaning for my dog. While touring the vet hospital, I noticed a lot of animal pictures on the wall with small plaques next to them. As it turns out, they are the staff's pets with a little bio on each pet which was pretty cool and something that I have never seen before. We had already lost our family dog a few months ago, so my mom was struggling, and I was doing everything I could to help my parents through this while juggling their schedule and my own stress. When I called, my first question was simply whether the clinic offers euthanasia for cats. The representative actually scoffed and sounded offended at the question before answering "yes", which was bizarre, considering that's a standard service at a vet clinic. When I tried to explain our situation, she cut me off and told me they didn't have availability until the following Wednesday. I had actually been considering this clinic for my other cat and dog, but after this interaction, I can't trust them with my pets' care. If this is how they treat someone who is losing a beloved pet, I don't want to imagine how they'd handle other stressful situations. A little compassion goes a long way, especially in this line of work. Please reconsider how your staff talks to grieving pet owners.

Punky was a very willful, alpha kind of dog who was an extremely reactive farm collie kind of rescue from Helen Woodward Center in San Diego. Never in my life have I encountered such a reactive, dominating, extremely smart and intuitive dog. And, never have I had a dog rule me instead of vice - versa. The problem with Punky Is that she was an impulsive, uncontrollable chaser of birds and things. She'd take off like a shot and run really fast up hills in pursuit of things. I called her "Punky Long Legs" and her wild adventures eventually led to 2 Knee Surgeries (one for each knee) with Fido's Surgeon. We did alot of research before choosing Fido's Surgeon. Their approach is quite comprehensive and requires regular, disciplined commitment as a dog owner. We think it is the best approach, involving appropriate weight mgt to take unnecessary pressure off joints like knees, regular, daily long walks and a series of progressive physical therapy with ladders. Dr. Denny and his wife/ nurse Rainey are super - specialists in this approach.They are a small, h ighly committed "Mom and Pop" operation that operates out of several veterinary clinics in North County and general San Diego. Rainey does all of the surgery after - care and protocol herself. She requires and deserves great deal of account ability and commitment to work in partnership for the quality of life and results for your dog. So, do think about whether your are willing and able to meet the requirements before signing up. If you do choose them, I think that your dog will have the best quality of life afterwards, compared to other types of dog knee operations done by surgeons. Actually, Punky wound up in the best shape of her life because of their comprehensive approach. She thrived under the program and so looked forward to her rehab ladder work and walks. She, unfortunately, had been later heartbreakingly misdiagnosed with gallbladder disease by regular vet and once properly diagnosed, only lived for a very short period of timeI She passed away from undiagnosed Non- Hodgkin's Lymphoma because of it.Yet, till a few days before she died, she still rallied to try and do her walks but we had to stop her because, at that point, movement made the cancer worse. Eternally greatful to Fido's Surgeon and all they did to give Punky the best quality of life for many, many years. They are the greatest!

He is now 8 weeks post surgery and is doing very well. Dr. Aron and Rainy did a fabulous job. They were straight forward on what to expect and how I need to be committed to helping my baby feel better. Had I taken Nalu somewhere else and I am certain his recovery would not have been the same.
