I went to shin shin for the first time and what is not to say, i ordered the classic Chinese dish the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the food tasted great but there was a evil man in there ordering "cream of sum yung boi" now listen i am from chicago not knwong much bout no chinese foo, but this dude got pretty upset when he was told it wasnt on the menu and started to throw chow mein on the waiters but then the manager came put in a chinese dragon suit and ate the man, never seen agon and i enjoyed my meal read more

A must stop for authentic Chinese food in Windsor, Canada. Just a day before we had the worst dim sum in Cleveland,Ohio, I had very little hope there is good Chinese food anywhere around To be honest, Ming kitchen across the street was closed for private party and we saw Shin Shin Chinese. My husband looked at the sign in the front door, street side that said, "Best Chinese food in Windsor", self proclaimed. In my mind, I thought I would be the judge of that. We entered the restaurant at 2pm, Sunday afternoon, there was no one there. I thought, "oh no," but we just ordered none the less. The owner was so nice. Took our order, and within minutes our food was out! 1. Crispy wonton with cheese, accompanied with a sweet sour sauce. Delish! It was freshly made, crispy, hot, tasty! We expected 2-3 wontons appetizer, the dish came out with 8-9 little yummy wontons. 2. House veggie soup, I believe it was a bone broth, on the house! The owner came out and said they just boiled some veggie soup and offered some for free. I didn't know it would be free until I didn't see it on the bill. Dish after dish arrived and we were delighted. 3. Sichuan boiled fish. Waitress came out to ask how spicy we wanted the dish. Caution, we said little spicy, but that's subjective. I think mild would have been good enough for us, but a little spicy is still delicious. The portion was HUGE. It had a good amount of cabbage, bean sprouts, cucumber, cilantro at the base of the soup and there was so many pieces of very tender fish above. For $16.99, you have this big bowl of yummy fish, perfectly seasoned. We have enough to take away. 4. The ma pao tofu was beautifully plated and simply good. Each tofu cube was soft and the flavor so good. The portions are so big, I had to bring the tofu to go. 5. My son ordered the beef udon and he liked it. I tried it, and it's just ok for me. I still like Japanese style udon more than a pan fried udon. 6. The General Tsao chicken was very good. Again, freshly made and it's not all batter. There is a good amount of chicken in the dish. My husband thought it was the best food he had all week after lots of fine dining in Detroit, eating at Adiamo and Highlands in the GM building. Our family enjoyed Shin Shin's Chinese food. If you want a taste of good Chinese food, don't let the exterior of Shin Shin restaurant deter you from going inside and having a taste. We arrived for a late-ish lunch. Only one other table was occupied. The eggplant, calamari and scallion pancake were all very good ... and according to my (Chinese) lunch companion, authentic. Oh Shin Shin, we miss you. (we haven't gotten passports yet) Up until our passport laziness, we would visit SS every other month, coinciding our meal with a trip to the Windsor casino (since it is non-smoking and they had nice penny slots to occupy my time). We've culled our food choices down to the ones that we KNOW work. I love their corn egg drop soup - perfect combination of sweet creamed corn and salty egg drop soup. Love. To compliment the soup, we order a fried bun. The outside of this large bread is crispy from frying, but the inside is sweet and yeasty, and pulls apart in strings. We've never seen anything like this. Does not reheat well. Main dishes for us are the Crispy Beef, ordered hot and extra, extra crispy so it's almost the consistency of cornstarch battered bacon. Sweet, spicy sauce is over the top good. (Ken made the mistake of ordering their General's chicken our first time there, because that's one if his fav dishes, but when he saw my dish he said 'What is that??' then gazed longingly at it after I let him try it) Other winners are their Shrimp Egg Foo Yung, with thin egg patties and the shrimp in the gravy on the side (yum!) and the Spicy Green Beans. The sauce on the beans is similar to the Crispy Beef but contains ground meat and green onions, and the beans are still crispy and fresh. This place was the best! But during Covid the owners sold it. The new incarnation is ok but inconsistent. We ordered 2 crispy beefs---thinking it was what we used to order....we were hungry so we ate the first order which was completely flavorless. Decided to dig into the second dish ( there were three of us eating) and it was completely different. Still not crispy beef from our memories but it did have flavor-- garlic and subtle ginger! The spicy green beans were good. But we probably won't be making a special trip to Canada for this So sad. read more

You have to get a fried bun here. Yummy. Moist, sweet, love the different textures to enjoy, just fabu. I want another one now. I also dove into some hot and sour cabbage salad for me alone, happy sichuan pickle memories. I have not had this dish in years. I almost cried from happiness. The corn egg drop soup here is very good. Sweet, salty, rich. Evil. My husband finally found an egg drop he will eat. The crispy beef was all that Liz R promised and more, we both liked it a lot. Ditto on the spicy green beans, which James could not stop eating. We went out on our own again with some shrimps in the shell with spicy salt, pretty happy stuff. I think you have to know what to order here though, other things I saw did not look as happy as ours. We over-ordered but liked everything we got so we were pleased. Was recommended by someone that lives in Windsor. I'm always up to try new restaurants! The parking here is a little hard, as there are a couple spots in the front on the street, and some in the back. The service here was very welcoming, knowing it was our first time there, they recommended some dishes to us. They have some dinner set combos, but it's quite americanized with hot and sour soup, spring rolls...etc. We ordered off the menu, tried their mooshu pork which was recommended, string beans, hot and sour soup, eggplant and ginger beef. We asked for little salt, no msg, little oil. My parents enjoyed the fact that it was what they asked for, they found the dishes not salty, not oily and healthier. The hot and sour soup had a lot of toppings in it, the taste was okay. The string beans were pretty good, had a nice crunch and fair portion. The mooshu pork was really good, came with 6 wraps and some oyster sauce. the wraps are not enough, but eating the remainder with rice was still very good. The eggplant was nice and soft, had a good taste, and saucy. The ginger and onion beef had a lot of ginger and onion. It was very flavourful, but seems to have more ginger and onion than beef. Overall a good experience, but coming from Toronto, I'm spoiled with Chinese food. Bonus: They take vicinity points. $1.00 for 1 point. 100 points = Lunch combo. I've had this place marked to try for a while now. Finally made it here and wasn't disappointed. Parking as mentioned isn't that easy since they don't have a parking lot but we were able to find a spot quickly. We were promptly seated and given some water. Our glasses NEVER went empty. I've never had such attentive service. The spring rolls were flavorful and crispy. Excellent flavors. They even had hot mustard dipping sauce for the spring rolls which I have yet to see at any Chinese restaurant in Windsor. It's a staple in the states which I have missed since coming to Canada. We had Szechuan chicken which was spicy but not entirely flavorful. We were thankful for the prompt water refills because of the spice. I wouldn't hesitate to try another dish off their menu. This place will definitely be on my rotation of restaurants I visit. read more

We have been traveling to Windsor for pst couple years for work. We have tried 5 different Chinese food places but all fell short of our expectations. But now we have a New favourite place in Windsor. Little pricey but it's worth the money this is what we got for 60$ Trust me when I say it was best we have had on road traveling, we travel about 4-5 months a year. Thanks for the Great food. Shin Shin is as good as Chinese food gets folks! My parents live in Grosse Pointe and have been coming to this establishment since 1982. There is no other Chinese restaurant in Michigan that can even compare! For true Chinese food, you must venture over to Windsor, Canada for this absolute gem of a place. The ownership at Shin-Shin has changed, however, the food and kind people have not! I'm so happy! In the past, Julia, the owner, used to run everything. She even took our order. I can never remember a day where she did not have a smile on her face. She treated my family and I as if we were in her family. The food at Shin Shin is off the hook! I would recommend the garlic chicken, ginger duck, shrimp in dried hot pepper sauce, steamed bun, vegetable low-mein noodles (thick noodles), and hunan beef. Take if from a person that has been coming to this restaurant since he was a young chap...this is the food that you want! The chicken is thinly cut and prepared with aromatic garlic, the duck just melts in your mouth with the combination of celery to accentuate the ginger infused duck, the shrimps are very large and they give a generous portion prepared in a delectable black hot chile sauce that has just the right amount of heat for you to enjoy. Finally, don't forget the vegetable low-mein noodles and sticky bun to compliment your meal and send your taste buds to heaven! I highly recommend Shin Shin if you have not tried it. Believe me, you will not be disappointed! One thing to remember is that the service is not the best as there are usually two people that take the orders and run everything on the front end. This is the best Szechuan Chinese food in metro Detroit. My family has been coming to Canada solely for this restaurant for decades. Recently, they've been adding sugar to recipes, but are happy to cut it out if you request. This place remains my standard for Szechuan food. Went back for Peking Duck, which must be ordetred 3 days in advance. Very good and the staff was very excited that someone had ordered it but I wish someone there would have told me what to expect. I ordered corn soup and a spring roll to start. Then served the crispy skin as the first course, soooooo good. Served with pancakes and a thick soy type sauce. Then the entree, second course, of duck, they ask how you want it made. I asked for stir fry medium low hot. Their medium low is our medium high but it was very tasty. However for an Asian food joint the food quality for the price point makes zero sense. $16 for a chicken entree where rice is extra and most of the entree is onions makes no sense. Went on the recommendation of a friend as I was missing the Chinese food I am used to eating in Toronto. Windsor typically has great food and I was hoping I'd hit the hot spot for Chinese with Shin Shin. Never. Again. The meat was flavourless and a very strange colour, everything seemed really bland and overcooked and the decor made me a little sad; think Grandma's dank basement before she remodelled. Normally holes in the walls provide the best ethnic food on earth but Shin Shin is the exception. Do yourself a favour; cut off your tongue instead. read more

It's a bit more pricey than Jade but absolutely everything I've had was very tasty and my Chinese friends largely consider this their favourite place. Quiet family run restaurant with the best won ton soup in town. The servers are always smiling and somehow make you feel like you are visiting your own family. My go-to standard here is the beef with dried hot pepper sauce, and it has never been anything short of awesome. Previously my favourite was their duck, but for reasons I cannot disparage, you now have to order it 24 hours in advance. I cant say if it is authentic or not, but I have never been disappointed. read more

I took my wife on our first date to this palace in 1986. I have eaten there well over a hundred time and no I not kidding. You have not had true chinese if you haven't eaten here. I believe Shin Shin means Happy Happy and you will once you have dinner here. The beans WOW, Chicken la orange,the hot and sour cabbage and the list just goes on and on. I have never dined-in at shin shin, so I can only speak to their take-out/delivery. That being said, the food is very tasty. The crispy beef is a must, and is by far the best beef dish I have had in any Chinese restaurant. Very crispy with a unique blend of spices. The "shin shin special fried rice" has great rice flavour and a generous portion of shrimp and chicken. The delivery is prompt and the service is on point. The first Chinese restaurant I call in Windsor. I suggest you do the same. read more

Having not been to windsor in 13 yrs , we decided to go to our favorite restaurant we always go to when in windsor. This time with 3 kids in tow. Wow time has change! Neighborhood has become kind of seedy deserted and overall cleanliness we are use to is gone. As we pulled in about lunch time the lot was empty. This should have given us a clue to leave! We were hungry and just decided to just check it out. There was a time that the lot was always full and we usually park a little distance.Of course as we entered we were the only ones there. I remember this place always full every time we came to visit. Again this should have given us a clue to leave! Well anyway the person there seemed surprised that we were even there! We told the lady that greeted us that we haven't been here in 13 yrs and if there was a change of ownership. She said that the cook actually took over and bought the place. Oh good I thought the quality of the food should probably be the same. Boy was I wrong! We ordered 3 items which was our favorite fish, pan fried noodles and Chinese cabbage. Not one of of them we recognized as the shin shin dish we once new. The amount of the dishes on the plate was so small our 7 yr old could fininish and still be hungry! We were so disappointed. We were looking so forward to the food. The owners we met were very nice. It's just to bad the food is not worth coming back for. Don't think will visit windsor again. This place is a great low budget place. New management is afoot in 2013. Some old faces are retired and new ones taking over. I don't know if its the same family or what but they are computerized now. So far so good and I hope they don't change the friendly ways. My favorite waiter in Windsor works here still. Makes you feel like you are in a fine restaurant with his attentive perfectly timed service. Tall, thin Chinese guy with longish hair. Anyway its not 5 star but the prices have always been very affordable while still serving decent food. Some items are better than others.
