This place is absolutely my vibe. The staff are fantastic, friendly, and very skilled at their jobs. Beverages were refilled, we were checked in with, and felt taken care of. The real star of the show was the food. I came with two of my sons, and we all really enjoyed our ramen bowls. I had the pork belly tonkatsu, one of my sons had the catfish tonkatsu, and the other had the red curry. I absolutely recommend this restaurant, and will be returning very soon!

Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.

I was a bit excessive when I ordered since I could not pass on a bubble tea! This was my first time having strawberry balls that I was not even aware of. It made the drink delicious. Regarding Detroit's Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant:…read more I've eaten at this location for years. In fact, I've eaten at previous restaurants at that location even prior to Shangri-La opening there. The food at Shangri-La simply checks the Chinese Food box when I have a taste for it. Today, I decided to have a work lunch there, and sat with my laptop for a while, even after I was finished eating. The service was excellent (in comparison to my usual experience), and so my plan was to take good care of the waitress. I had never seen her before, and assumed her to be new staff. She returned to my table to check in with me at least three times. When waitress brought the bill, the amount seemed to be off. I studied the handwritten bill further, and realized there was a 20% tip added to my bill. This was a quandary for me because the $7 and something gratuity was less than I intended to leave her, but I was incensed with the idea that it had been added without my consent. I explained my concern to her, and she pointed to the desk where the manager (or owner) typically stands and stated that this was the restaurant's policy. Moments later, he arrived at my table and explained that, "some people come and they don't tip." His arrogant tone was odd to me because this person has seen me at least once every several months for years. I explained to him that this plan of his is a bad idea, but he didn't appear to care about my position. He mentioned that the policy is printed on the menu, however I ordered without looking at the menu. But, what was most disgusting was his response, "if you can't afford to pay a tip, you shouldn't come out to eat." His facial expression and body language exhibited years of old racial animosity and anxiety. I should mention, just prior to my leaving, a Black couple left the restaurant after disputing an issue with the same manager/owner. The subject of the dispute was not clear, but I did hear the gentleman explaining that he had been eating at this location, "for years," and didn't like how something "was handled." Finally, I come here to Yelp and survey the comments before writing my own, and here is another Black customer, from Los Angeles, protesting the manager/owner, "following her out to her car over a tip." So, there's the secondary issue on this policy. Not only are there folks who might not be able to afford a tip at any given time, but there is the right of customers to determine what their tip should be based upon the service they perceive the server provided. In my case, I tipped the waitress above and added gratuity. I needed for her to be clear that my concern had nothing to do with her. But, the manager/owner person left a horrible taste in my mouth - so much so that I threw my unhealthy leftovers in the garbage. Never again. This man's (unintelligent and likely racist) assumption that I could not "afford to tip" will be his last opportunity to be in conversation with me. I won't be back.

I really enjoyed the Chinese donut wrapped in rice noodle (cheung fun with youtiao) , that was probably my favorite dish. The congee had good flavor, but the meat in it tasted a little old. The siu mai were huge and definitely hit my craving. The har gow wasn't anything super special, but still decent. The chow fun was good, just could've used a bit more flavor. I also liked the black sesame balls for dessert, and I always enjoy black bean spare ribs, which were solid here too. Service was great, the young girls working there were very nice and attentive. Overall, a good, convenient dim sum spot especially if you're coming right across the border. Atmosphere felt like a homey Chinese restaurant.

We settled on many different types of dishes, and were impressed with all of them. When the beef had come out, it was still sizzling on the hot tray, which was nice to see. We also settled on stir-fried rice, stir-fried noodles, and green beans with beef; all of these dishes were also well-prepared and tasty. The restaurant itself was quite small however, it wasn't too crowded, which made our stay a pleasant one. Servers came over to greet us and bring our food in a timely manner; overall, a great place for authentic Chinese cuisine, with delicious food and good service.

2025-02-02. Sun Hong BBQ & Seafood. Windsor, ON…read more The problem with finding a place that does a dish well is that it sets the bar by which all else is compared. That's why food reviews are so subjective. They're all based on personal tastes and flavors. So, as I write this review, you may want to take it with a grain of salt. I don't frequent Windsor very often, so I don't know what the competition is like here. Maybe Sun Hong is "as good as it gets" for Windsor and other places are even worse, who knows... For Roasted BBQ meats, my favorite is still Yummy Wok BBQ (in Toronto). Their flavors are inexplicable, but I can tell you it's all in their rub and their marinade. To me Sun Hong duck wasn't even in the same league. The duck was roasted the traditional way, but it had so little flavor, it barely registered. When I asked for duck sauce, they gave me packets of Plum sauce. Wait whut? Now for many, plum sauce is what you have with duck, but I have never eaten roast duck with plum sauce. At Yummy Wok, nobody asks for plum sauce. In fact, I don't even know if they have plum sauce. When you order a duck there, they douse it with their marinade (which is 5-spice based), and let me tell you, it's the crack of duck sauces! Once you try that, you'll never go back! On the bright side, the duck at Sun Hong was not dried out. 2-stars for the proper cook. The roasted pork was a little overdone and the meat was drier that I liked. I got the piece just below the ribs. The pieces had a medium amount of fat. On the bright side the skin was crispy as it should be. The sauce with this is Hoisin, and aside from the cook, you really can't go wrong with this dish. Yummy Wok uses their signature dry rub on their roast pork, which makes it a little salty for most, but it makes up for it in flavor. Sun Hong has no such rub and their pork was barely salted. Combine this with the overcook, and I have to go 3 stars here. Lastly, I ordered some BBQ pork (aka Char Siu). This is a baked pork that is honey glazed. I asked for a leaner cut here as I wanted to use any leftovers to make a fried rice and they did a decent job in getting me some leaner pieces. Like the roast pork, the char siu was overcooked which dried it out a bit. Flavour wise, it was pretty much as expected. Again, it's five-spice based and there's little variation outside the other main ingredients. The only variable is the quantity they use to make certain flavors more prominent than others. They did cut the slices quite thick, more than I'm used to, and that added to making it a bit more tough. When overcooked, the key is to slice it thinner to make it more tender. Despite this and the overcook, this was probably their best dish. 3.5 stars. The other shocker for me was the price. 1/2 Roast Duck, 1lb of Roast Pork, and 1lb of Char Siu came to a whopping $62! Overall, if I'm being honest, this was very underwhelming for me. But keep in mind, everyone has different standards. Many people do prefer that their meats are fully cooked (I'm not one of them. I like these types of meats, just cooked -- no pink.) and many prefer it super lean (again, I'm not one of them. I like a little fat as cooking with the fat is what gives it the flavor!) Lastly, many prefer milder flavors, whereas I like mine bold and intense. My standards are most likely different from others, as are my taste preferences. If You would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company... Bon Appétit!
