If you aren't Hispanic, don't expect a greeting or to be welcomed when you come into the store. Language barrier is clear, but the energy is unwelcoming. This visit was my last time coming here, I tested the energy every visit and it's been the same every time. If you plan on coming here, ward up with active protection. And always cleanse whatever you buy.

I discovered General Wax earlier this year when I thought candle making would be a fun hobby. I brought a friend along to their North Hollywood location for what was advertised as an educational class. Unfortunately, it didn't seem like a class much at all but more like an activity. The 'instructor' claimed to sell her own candle creations, yet seemed surprisingly unknowledgeable. Our group was outspoken and asked lots of questions, but she was incredibly vague and nonchalant. When asked basic technical questions like how different fragrances react with specific waxes or how to choose the right wax for a project, she couldn't even provide clear answers. I really didn't learn much of anything at this paid class. (Fyi, I turned to YouTube!) The store itself is spacious and well organized, but be very careful with their pricing. I've found that many of their supplies are significantly marked up compared to local craft stores or Amazon. For example, I bought a digital scale here that turned out to be a non-functioning and non-reliable piece of trash. After some research, I realized they charged me three times more than better models available online. Thankfully, I was able to return it. Their fragrance selection and quality is mostly great and I do like their wax. The staff doesn't go out of their way to help but are approachable and friendly. What prompted this review today was a total lack of communication regarding their hours. I checked their website before leaving my house to ensure they were open. The only holiday closure banner on their website was for a holiday that happened months ago (labor day). After a 40-minute drive, I arrived to find the gates closed. I had to pull over and call, only to hear a recording stating they are closed for the next 10 days for holidays and inventory. It's incredibly irritating to waste that much time and gas because a business can't be bothered to update their website. Honestly, it shows that they don't really value their customers or their time.

When I walked inside the store on the second floor, a worker greeted me and told me about their deals. She also asked if I was looking for anything in particular and I told her I wasn't but was just browsing. So she said she'll be here if I had any questions. I was ordering a few cakes today at the store nearby and decided to walk in to the store as I had never been in. I am so convinced this was a "Pretty Woman" scenario. We had a big recording artist doing an all night session and I had been at the studio all night. Hair in a messy bun. Jeans and a sweatshirt. No make up. Walked into the store while the person working (girl with long dark hair - around 12:30pm on 5/28) was finishing helping a customer. Overheard the sales associate talking to her about the candles used at Hotel Bel Aire and she seemed lovely - to the other customer. That customer left and I was alone. In the store. I browsed and smelled some candles. Looked at some flip flops and cute little sun screen options at the front. NOT A WORD. not a hello. Not a - can I help you with anything? Wouldn't even look at me. I spent a few more minutes there and after feeling so uncomfortable and unwelcomeI left. Not a goodbye. Not a thank you. Literally NOTHING. I will continue buying my TRUDON and FORNASETTI and LOEWE candles and shop at boutiques that value me as a customer. Never again will I step foot into this place or buy from them.

I've sampled just about every fragrance of their candles now and become a…read moreregular buyer, and none of them are cloying OR underwhelming as a room aroma and body perfume -- a really hard balance to find with household aromas overall. Best of all, the candles contain no wax, instead swapping out the usual harsh chemicals with a ton of AMAZING ingredients for your skin and essential oils for fragrance, and the melted soy "wax" replacement doubles as a super rich massage oil, which I now use daily on my hands, elbows, knees, and feet. I recently watched a (red) stretch mark entirely disappear after rubbing the oil into it several times a day for a couple of weeks!! I've also noticed a huge improvement in the softness/suppleness of my skin in rough areas overall, and I'm constantly receiving compliments on the aroma (my personal favorite is the rose fragrance). For muscle pain, I also find that the warm oil is very effective when used as a massage oil at home, especially after a hot Epsom salt bath. :) HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended!!

It's funny how someone else is so mad because they couldn't exchange an item without a receipt. I don't know any store that would. I work in retail and gift receipts are given out when the customer asks for it. The person complaining should either ask the friend for the actual receipt or enjoy his/her candle.
