I recently moved back to MI after 10+ years in Chicago and decided on a staycation at Shinola Hotel to help get reacquainted with Detroit. I chose this hotel over a different one with a pool and rooftop bar because I convinced myself the higher price tag would be worth it with everything included, however that did not end up being the case. Let's start with the good - everyone was very friendly at valet and check-in. We received a complimentary glass of champagne and a bellman helped us with our bags. The design of the hotel is retro cool and I appreciated all the unique details. Luckily, the a/c in my room worked well since our stay was during hot weather. I also liked the location of the hotel, being walking distance to many shops, bars, and restaurants. But I would not say it was a 5 star experience. It was a little loud for my taste - apparently my neighbors had a problem at night and had to change rooms but were not quiet about it. It was a random weekday so I can't imagine what a weekend is like. At check-in, we asked where to go for the complimentary cocktail at 5 pm and none of the employees seemed to know what we were talking about even though it's clearly on their list of amenities. In general, employees seemed to be kind of confused even though they were trying. I booked through Expedia and it says cook-to-order breakfast included, which is just not true. There is a complimentary continental breakfast included but you also have to pay an extra $30 amenity fee at check-out. Valet parking is an extra $50/night. At checkout, I told the manager I thought the extra $30 amenity fee was misleading since breakfast is listed under their amenity section but Expedia says it's included, and she promised to have her marketing team review it for accuracy. So far nothing has changed which is disappointing. Figuring out what's included in your stay should not be hard or confusing. Hope this review helps others make a more informed decision. read more

Stayed one night in a queen size room on a Tuesday. The hotel is historical and beautiful. The room was very clean. Large bathroom and shower. Bed was comfortable but there was no top sheet just a duvet comforter. Unfortunately it was a very warm day and even though I tried to get the a/c cooler I wasn't able to. Temperature was okay but too warm for a comforter but still wanted a light weight sheet which should have been available on the bed. A complimentary water bottle was left on night stand which I appreciated. In the closet was a robe and slippers. Slippers were nice but robe was not soft, too rough to wear. We were offered a little glass of champagne checking in which was nice. However the staff was confused about the complimentary welcome drink offered in living room later. Later we went downstairs for it and they said yes but it was still confusing to the staff. The staff was very nice and really trying but management is lacking in keeping them up to date and informed on policies. Also lacking in communication to guests as we were surprised by a fee of $30 added at checkout. When making reservations online it said complimentary full breakfast, drink etc. was included in room fee. Breakfast in morning was a continental breakfast offered at San Morello. Even though it wasn't the full to order breakfast I was pleasantly surprised at what a delicious continental breakfast it was. We were given yogurt with delicious granola topping and fruit. Also a plate of bread, croissant, tart and delicious pistachio cake. Not the healthiest breakfast but good. No fault of San Morello as this is what they said hotel offered. There is a $50 valet fee and porter helped us take our luggage upstairs. We also received free tickets to DIA, free chocolate at Bon Bon (one of my favorite places) that we went to. We chose this hotel for location and the complimentary package supposedly included. It is a beautiful high end hotel. Some hits and misses. Could be so much better with clearer expectations and a few changes. read more

We decided to spend the night at the Shinola hotel for a night and enjoy downtown. It was a great experience! Valet and check in were fine, even though it was super busy with weddings that weekend. There was an issue with the computer at check in. But shout out to Hannah, our front desk agent, who was super friendly, walked us up to our room, went back and got everything fixed, and all at minimal inconvenience to us. She was great! The room was really great! We loved the styling and architecture. We really appreciated the Bluetooth speaker setup, it was easy to set up some music and accentuate the vibes. Even though we didn't take much advantage of the amenities in the hotel, there's tons to do. We did take advantage of the room service to order in for breakfast, and it was fast, the food was hot, and the person delivering it was nice and professional. The hotel location is amazing. You can stay here and basically walk to everything worth checking out in less than 10 minutes. The room rate is pricey but it was worth it. Overall a great experience. I had a great stay at the hotel. The valet parking is kind of steep at $50 per night but overall good experience. I stayed due to going to an comedy event at the Fox. I was checked in quickly and even given champagne. The hotel is right in the heart of downtown on Woodward. There are plenty of shops and restaurants near by. The rooms are spacious with a mini bar and includes a couch and table area. I was able to hear others above me walking around which I did not like but overall quiet. The bed was also comfortable. I have always wanted to stay at Shinola Hotel, however, couldn't really justify the cost. Luckily I was able to stay with an Amex FHR credit. The credit doesn't work for valet, so I found a paid lot two blocks away for $24 for 24 hours (valet was $50!). Upon check-in we were given a glass of champagne, a room upgrade, and our credits were thoroughly explained. Service was amazing and the rooms were beautiful. I was initially a bit hesitant to spend that much money on a hotel stay for 1 night, but I'm glad that I did as it made our 1 day trip to Detroit a real luxury. We were offered champagne glasses upon check in and stayed in a Den King. The room was well stocked with a coffee station, toiletries, and a mini bar (of which we did not purchase anything). The overall aesthetic was super trendy and nice, and it felt very swanky. I was fortunate to be on the Woodward side of the building, so I didn't need to navigate the maze, but I could see it being a bit confusing. During our time there, we also visited the adjoining restaurants (San Morello, Penny Reds, Evening Bar, Brakeman's). It made me feel like I was in a resort because we never had to leave the premises. Breakfast was included as part of the stay, and the hotel gave you a complimentary drink at Brakeman's, a coupon for Mister Dips, and complimentary tickets to the Detroit Institute of Arts, which we unfortunately did not have the time to visit. Lastly, on the night that we stayed, there was also a live jazz performance in the living room, which was a nice touch. Overall, I would recommend for a relaxing and stylish stay. read more

Wonderful stay! This place is a diamond in the rough. We were greeted upon entry with two glasses of champagne. The staff were wonderful and welcoming! I will say once we got off the elevator, finding the room was a little confusing (there's lots of twist and turns), but once you got it, you'll be fine. The room we had was jaw dropping! Spotless! Neat! Scenic! Cozy! We even had a fireplace! Maintenance had to come turn it on, but that didn't take long at all. I've never stayed at a hotel that had TWO bathrooms in ONE reserved room! My goodness, who's genius idea was this!? And the ginormous shower and soaking tub! It was perfect! I could've stayed there a whole week! read more

From valet to checkout... we had excellent service, the room was large, we even liked the smaller bathroom because it had a cool setup, the mini bar had a ton of options, breakfast was great, location was perfect, the "living room" was so chill and nice to hangout in. Only one complaint.... We stayed on the 8th floor (#804) facing Woodward Ave.... it was soooo loud all night... we could hear every single car, motorcycle, and even peoples conversations from the main street below. We made sure all the windows were closed but it didn't matter.... It sounded like there was no insulation in the walls or the windows were cheap. read more

Great staff and worth spending time in even if you aren't staying in the hotel. The living room has a loungy vibe and the upstairs Pool/work space is my personal favorite spot to tuck away and get a little work done. San Morello has great food but I've had below to average service every time I've gone save for the time I requested a private room. The rooms are solid and convenient for a home base as you explore Downtown Detroit. read more

I cannot begin to cover everything I enjoyed at the Shinola last weekend but I can say the decor, comfortable bedding and very clean atmosphere, the windows, wall art, vintage themes. The location and view is giving an overall Manhattan feel. I had a fabulous experience while there. The joy continued when I discovered the hotel employed a very honest and compassionate team member who helped me locate my misplaced items while waiting patiently. Jasmin was a complete and total joy who kept me calm while I was frantic about losing a bag of new clothing. She was very pleasant and totally professional when we spoke over the phone. We have stayed here a couple of times now and Shinola has turned into our favorite hotel in North America. This last trip is now the standard that we will use to examine all hotels moving forward. Tonya was world class. I would hire her for any role, anywhere. She should be president. It was my husband's birthday and she could not have done more to make us feel warm and welcome at this beautiful hotel. Exceptional service at an exceptional hotel is definitely something to celebrate. Tonya deserves that. So does Terrence. Terrence is friendly and quick. A pillar of consistency and goodness. I was there in July 2025 for an International Leadership Conference. The hotel is a very unique, clean, and favorably located place to stay. Resturants, shopping, and nightlife are easily accessible. My flight from the west coast arrived later than I expected but, Siyani B. was a TREMENDOUS help, making sure I got parked, checked in, settled very quickly and comfortably so that I would be refreshed for an early morning. We hosted a company meeting here and everything went so perfectly. The Birdy Room is one of the prettiest event spaces in Michigan. The beds are so comfortable and the rooms are nice and spacious. Robes and slippies in every room, fridge, snacks and alcohol available for purchase in the room. A really great shower. Access to an outdoor pet-friendly lounge on the 4th floor is pretty cool. Magnificent location for cocktails and conversation! The lobby lounge features table service, with signature & specialty cocktails and small plate food. Also a unique feature is an eclectic display of art, which rotates in and out over time. Some of the pieces are simply amazing and it makes for an interesting venue to relax and talk. Writing this review as both a hotel guest and a wedding guest, so speaking to both the Shinola hotel stay AND their event space experience! In short, everything was basically immaculate and while Shinola is extremely pricey, they really deliver on the level of quality and service that makes it worth it! Hotel: Everything about it is delightful. Probably the biggest selling point to me is the fact that Shinola is dog-friendly! They are so welcoming to dogs - they have a terrace in the middle of the hotel where you can take the dogs out rather than having to navigate all the way back down to the street level! My main frustration with the hotel was the check-in process. I was hoping for early check in, which they were really good at communicating with me wasn't going to be a guarantee. So the day I was coming in, early check in sadly didn't work out, but regular check in was at 3 pm and so when I showed up at 3 pm on the dot and a room still wasn't available for me to check in to. They said that one should be ready in 15-20 minutes and so I went to park my car in a nearby parking lot (you can do valet or find your own parking, the price is comparable). When I came back almost 30 minutes later, the room still wasn't available. At this point, I think there was a bit of miscommunication because while I would have preferred a room on the floor with the pet terrace, in the interest of time (I had a wedding to get ready for!) I just needed an available room regardless of which floor, so the front desk was able to get me checked into a different room and we were on our way. Again, such lovely customer service because all the front desk attendants remembered me and my dogs and would follow up throughout the stay! Shinola has 24/7 room service, which is lovely to see. The food isn't the same kitchen at the San Morello restaurant at the base of the hotel, but it's still very tasty! They also offer late check out if you need it. The rooms themselves are amazing, with high quality bedding, linens, everything! Everything is beautifully designed and dreamy! Truly just like how I would imagine Shinola to stage a home! As for the event space, my goodness JUST as delightful! It's a bit of a maze to get from the hotel lobby to the event space, but doable! There is also a separate entrance to just the event space itself. The glasshouse is beautiful and such a dream wedding venue! Again, all those working the event were so friendly and kind, great bartenders, AMAZING food at the wedding, such comfortable seats and other amenities that just really set this apart from other wedding venues. I know it must be so expensive to get married here, but you definitely see the difference in the quality! The two big observations that took away a slight bit from the overall experience were: 1) The glasshouse event space is so stunning and filled with greenery, but the hanging plants in the air were very obviously fake, which was a bit mystifying. Would really love to see real plants in these and more diversity in their plant selection as most of theirs were relatively basic! 2) This one is the big doozy, but the day I was at Shinola was a very humid, muggy day in Detroit. There were some sprinkles throughout the afternoon and evening, but never enough to break the humidity. What's surprising to me is how humid it felt throughout the entire Shinola building. Not just in the glasshouse event space, which is to be expected given that it almost mimics a greenhouse, but truly everywhere else. On my hotel floor as I walked through the hallways, it would be so hot and muggy. It was to a point where I wonder if the hotel did not have central air or good enough insulation. Thankfully my hotel room had great A/C, but there was such a shocking difference between inside my hotel room and out in the hallway on several of the floors that I went to that it was truly significant enough to note here! But overall, I absolutely loved my little staycation in Detroit at Shinola. I was so grateful I got to do this stay with my dogs AND celebrate my friends getting married! If you're looking to treat yourself, look no further than a stay at Shinola! It was a dream and while my bank account will be recovering from it for some time, I hope to be back sometime in the future to stay here again! read more

I used to love this hotel, but as you see from other reviews the customer service is seriously lacking. We are repeat customers and always bring our dog because dogs stay for free. However, they recently changed the policy and it's now $125 additional per night to have a dog which is absolutely insane. We asked to cancel our room and they said we missed the cancellation window. I am actually fine with that part, but to not be reasonable at all with us or offer a reduced pet fee or waive it for us this time is ridiculous. We have stayed several times before and been courteous guests. We were way too nice about it on the phone and they told us that they talked to the manager and she wasn't budging and wouldn't do anything to help us. I know people who are so rude to hotels, restaurants, etc. to get what they want and it works. It's encouraging people to act this way instead of people who are kind like we were on the phone and asking to just do something for us to help since it's a new policy and we have been there many times. Needless to say we won't be returning. read more

Absolute luxury. We stayed the night after a wedding and it was such a treat. For people in our income range this is a splurge but sweet celebration for an early anniversary as well. We are Shinola lovers from their products and the quality of the staff, rooms and accessibility to experience Detroit is unmatched. I wish we could stay forever hehe. Fascinating, luxurious hotel that's a confusing mystery with poorly trained staff and seemingly little interest in feedback. As a lifelong journalist, I've stayed in hotels around the world and was impressed with the design of the Shinola as my wife and I arrive for two nights and parts of three days at a luxurious "Detroit destination" wedding for folks from across the country. Yes, the rates for everything are high, but that's not the reason for my 1-star review. Luxury hotels like this are expensive in many cities. That's not my objection. The problem, for me, is a lack of staff assistance in helping guests. My first disappointment was that I was told there is no concierge. For such a high-end hotel, I can't imagine why they've decided not to offer that help. Second, the whole design concept is "retro" arts-and-crafts and durable materials like oak and fine fabrics, plus unusual amenities. That includes a shower with a 3-handle adjustment system with no labeling that nearly scalded us until by trial and error we figured out how to operate the three levers. It was like some strange puzzle room. No helpful info card or instruction, just: Hope you don't scald yourself. One other wedding guest told us they had the same scalding experience. Figuring out how to dine there is a puzzle, too. One front desk person told me to "just order room service." But, no, we didn't want to do that because supposedly there's great food at the Shinola. But where, for heaven's sake? Turns out, there's a secretive little breakfast cart, for example, with no staff member anywhere near it (we mistook it for a room service cart at first). A number of our party had no idea that was available. Overall, the Shinola is a fascinating, luxurious hotel seemingly staffed by folks who expect guests to figure out its puzzles and secrets (like missing room numbers on the hallway direction signs--how could that be? But it's true.). I'm adding this 1-star review to Yelp simply to urge other potential Shinola guests to get ready for a puzzling experience. Maybe if you know what's coming, you'll go with an adventurous commitment to "learn" about the place so you can enjoy it. The staff certainly won't help you. read more

I'm a huge fan of the Shinola brand & I've had this place on my bucket list for years. My dad was in manufacturing, but lost his job when work was sent overseas for cheaper labor. Shinola's owner wanted to repurpose the workforce in Detroit to create artisan watches in the USA. I own three timepieces and many of their brand products and I admire each piece. This boutique hotel has considered every aspect when it comes to design, quality, and there's a story at every turn. Take advantage of watching the in room videos on the making and design of the hotel. The artwork is amazing and tells a story about Detroit. The furniture is handcrafted specifically for the hotel in Ohio. The wallpaper in the lobby is a tapestry with scenes from tho city's history. I was incredibly impressed during my stay at the Shinola hotel during my business trip to Detroit. From check in to check out, I felt important and taken care of. There were valet folks outside that held the door for me, someone inside that greeted me and there wasn't a wait to check in. Smooth as a whistle. The directions I was given to get to my room was spot on as well. If you don't listen to the directions, you could possibly get lost in the winding hallways. The decor was clean and it felt like an exclusive country club specially the work out room. The room itself is like a boutique feel but the bed was comfortable and there was a robe and slippers to use as well. They had menu of all the items in the room that's for purchase as well. The booze wasn't as expensive as most hotels would have it. Also they had something I've never seen at a hotel before... a romance kit! Check out the pictures! All in all I loved my stay, the room service was great and also quick, the bars and food was also delicious! My husband surprised me with a quick overnight stay for my birthday. The room was gorgeous. Check in was pretty easy, and it's close to some great food choices! I only wish there wasn't construction lights and sounds coming from next door. I didn't sleep well because of it. I have found my new favorite hotel. Not only is she gorgeous, but the attention to the smallest of details is outstanding. The moment you walk in the experience starts, because that is what it is. The front desk staff is professional but real. The key didn't work in the elevator the first time, so we had to go back and they came with us to make sure it was working properly. The elevator is elegant. The hallways are handsome and sturdy. The room was magic. I have pictures. See them. After checking out the room, we headed downstairs to explore. "The living room" is just off the lobby and is a cozy area to hang out and have drinks. We stopped in to San Morello's for a pre-dinner drink. Sat at the bar. The bartenders were really cool. Chatted with us about this and that. Let us know they would be closing at 4 to get ready for dinner. Didn't rush us to finish. Once we finished, we headed to the Shinola store to check out the merch. I love looking at the new watch styles, the bags and the jewelry. The quality and style is great. Back to the room to get ready for dinner. The shower is probably the best there is. The shower head is mounted extra high which 6'5 hubs loved. It had an hand held sprayer. Shelves where I could put my own toiletries. My only issue with the bathroom is you cannot sit on the toilet and close the door. It is a tight fit in there. I do appreciate that the toilet is by itself. After dinner we came back hoping to have a drink at the bar. No such luck. You need reservations. San Morello's was packed as well. We headed to the living room and ordered a drink there. After getting our drinks, we decided to head up to our room. We hooked up to the Bluetooth speaker in the room and spend the night listening to music, drinking wine and looking at the night sky. It was my birthday and after checking in, we heard a knock at the door. They delivered a bottle of wine and a note wishing me a happy birthday. Such a nice surprise. I want to live there, I can't wait to go back. A hotel is normally a place to sleep, store my stuff and shower. I never wanted to leave the room. The best of the best for sure. read more

Let me first start off by saying I stayed overnight in downtown Detroit for the sole purpose of staying at the Shinola Hotel. I was introduced to the Shinola brand four years ago and their hotel was another example of why I support their business. To see the buildings they started with and how it turned out is a testament to Detroit's renaissance. Moreover, I was additionally impressed by them not just developing the hotel, they created a sleep+dine+drink+shop all-in-one destination. Make sure you walk around the outside around the block to ensure you don't miss out on all the nearby offerings. There are two entrances (only one lobby entrance) to the hotel and inside the hotel there is a skywalk connecting the buildings. Between the two building is a pedestrian brick-paved alleyway full of boutique businesses, Parker's Alley. You can grab lipstick, coffee, juice, clothes, flowers, etc. just steps from the hotel lobby without leaving the block. In addition to their own eateries (San Morello, Evening Bar, The Brakeman, Penny Red's). I wanted to explore so I choose to eat elsewhere nearby (Avalon Bakery&Cafe, The Dime Store, Townhouse) and there are some great options. It's also located near the Riverwalk which made for a convenient, safe, scenic morning run. It's also not too far from a People Mover stop. I stayed in a Gallery Room on the Fifth Floor with a bathtub. I chose the more expensive room for the space it offered as more time was spent in the room because of Covid than normal when traveling (eating and working in the room). The bathroom was large with double sinks, a separate room with a door with the toilet, a separate bathtub, and walk-in shower that could fit more than 2 people. The main room setup was an open floor plan with the bed facing the television at the other end. In between, was a large desk and then couch with a coffee table. It really does have the feel of an oversized studio apartment. I didn't price compare with other nearby hotels but I did feel it was overpriced considering you are in Detroit, not New York City. The wall with windows faced the construction site across the street (Grand River Ave). And yes you can hear the construction noise in the morning but it was not considered an issue. The natural light in the morning was incredible and the motorized shades for privacy (or darkness) worked like magic. I decided to use the Valet parking ($32/night) because they offered to charge my electric vehicle for 3 hours for free and the service provides more jobs at the hotel. The hotel also uses its own toiletry product line. The entire staff I encountered were polite and helpful. I would stay here again and next time probably in a standard room. read more

This is a stunning property from a design perspective. Very well executed. Unfortunately, it not only seems that ZERO emphasis has been placed on customer service, but the staff has no idea what their roll is. It was almost like purchasing a stylish expensive watch, only to find it had a $20 movement inside.....Oh wait a minute.....that describes the Shinola watch.
