I had an amazing experience.! Definitely a 10 out of 10. The avocado rolls were fresh and delicious, and all the sushi rolls we tried were top-notch. Excellent service by the staff and with reasonable prices. I wish I lived closer to this location.

    Sake menu

The whole menu at Shinwa is excellent. Both the sushi and the sake are thoughtfully and chosen and prepared. The attention to detail both in the menu and the decor shows the care and dedication they put into the food. I highly recommend Shinwa to anyone who appreciates exceptional sushi.

Fantastic DC sushi! Probably my new favorite place. Everything was fresh and delicious. Sushi is all about the basics done right, and this place nailed it. Looks like they do a brisk take out business. A great option overall!

This place is great! Shinwa just opened up in City Ridge and they are serving up a wide variety of tasty Japanese food, including ramen, sushi, and skewers/small plates. We went for the soft opening and the servers were very attentive and made sure to mention that, because they just opened, they were still figuring things out and would appreciate any and all feedback. With that being said, everything was great and we had no notes! On top of the great service and food, the interior is very cute and has a mix of modern and classic Japanese flare. This is definitely a place to keep an eye out for.

This is a Japanese restaurant opened earlier 2025 in the new development of City Ridge. Since this is the one restaurant we haven't tried in this complex we found an opportunity to go for dinner on a Sunday evening. It was relatively quiet around 6-7 pm. Restaurant is attractively decorated with medium tone wood paneling and partitions and subdued lighting. Variety of seating options - around the bar, regular and booths seats, a couple of two tops by the front window as well as a spacious patio. Being an Izakaya there is a good variety of menu items. We had tempura, gyoza, fried tofu, crispy cauliflowers and branzino - the last a bit pricy at $29 although very tasty. Would highly recommend the gyoza which was really delicious. Cauliflower could have used more spices and more tender. Service had a few hiccups but overall courteous and food came quickly and piping hot. This being the closest Japanese restaurant in our neighborhood will likely be back soon enough.

Checked out this new sushi spot while they're in their soft opening phase. Very cute decor inside and we got a booth tucked away in the back. We ordered sushi, skewers, ramen, wings, gyoza and mochi. The sushi was solid but nothing amazing. The volcano roll was a bit of a disappointment. For the $20 price we thought we would love it but it was just okay. Skewers were good but kind of a small portion. The wings were good but not spicy as the description stated. The gyoza was never put in so we didn't get it until later in our meal after asking about it a couple times. My friend's kid liked the ramen and the mochi, but I didn't try those. Overall the experience was good and I would go back once they've worked out some of the kinks so that I can update my rating.

I was amazed at the food, ambiance & service! Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted with a smile by the hostess! She asked our seating location and we chose the sushi bar. Now, i have been out many, many times but never sat at the sushi bar. What an Amazing experience. The head sushi chef, explained and answered all my questions. The uni was to die for!!! It was like pure butter...so much we ordered 2 more. Cheffie informed me that it came strait from Japan..and boy did it taste like it. We wanted to try many things, we ordered the octopus balls, salmon roe (my daughter really liked), truffle fries, lobster roll amd waygu beef. Wanted to try more but honestly was full. EVERY DARN piece of food was FRESH. Cheffie also let us sample a few items, one being flounder fin! Amazing, Amazing experience. Will defintely return...with a Big empty tummy

My boyfriend and I were in the mood for sushi and ramen, so Shinwa Izakaya was the perfect choice! The staff were all extremely friendly and attentive, our drinks were always full and they explained the menu and answered all our questions. The food came out very fast. We started with sharing the seaweed salad, then he had sushi and I had ramen. It was very flavorful and left me very full. The inside decor is very nice and unique. This is a great neighborhood spot for a date night or to take friends and family. I will be back!

Their grand opening is in a few days but the soft opening vibe check is A+. Lovely, professional team working there, very soothing ambience and music that's not too loud. Clean and intimate. I popped in for lunch but I have seen it packed in the evenings too.

I ordered the Basil Fried Rice, which is described as coming with egg, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables. I specifically requested no egg, no chicken, and double spicy green sauce on the side. Instead, I received plain fried rice with no egg, no chicken, no shrimp, and they didn't include the double green sauce I requested. Paying $15 for what was essentially plain fried rice was pretty disappointing. To make matters worse, the "green sauce" they did include wasn't even the usual spicy green sauce you get when dining in. It looked more like finely chopped green onions than the actual sauce. I also ordered Yaki Udon and requested double spicy green sauce with that as well--and once again, it was missing. It honestly felt like no one actually read my order. They seemed to go off muscle memory instead of following the modifications. Removing the shrimp entirely when I never asked for that just reinforces the impression that my order wasn't checked before it went out. The pickup experience wasn't much better. My order was sitting on the pickup shelf, clearly ready, but I had to flag down the host to retrieve it while a staff member stood just a few steps away. It would take less than a minute for the takeout staff to greet guests, confirm a name or order number, ask if anything else is needed, and hand over the order. The food at Hawkers is good--that's why I keep coming back--but the consistency of the takeout service needs work. Reading orders carefully and giving a little more attention to customers picking up their food would go a long way. Great food, but the execution and service didn't match.

Terrible experience. We did not go out for sushi to be berated and embarrassed by the servers…read more This was our family's first time dining at Yosaku. We have been looking for a sushi restaurant in our neighborhood and was hoping Yosaku could be a frequent family dining destination. Instead we were publicly called out by our servers for not finishing our food. Apparently it was happy hour where certain nigiri sushi items are $2 per piece. There is only one sushi menu - the kind you fill out with a pencil. One side is nigiri and the other side are rolls. Yosaku does not have a comprehensive menu of all their sushi offerings. For example, we asked for uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe) that was not listed on the menu. Our server Thung had to look up the price of the items on a computer. We ordered multiple rolls and a la carte items. Less than half our order was "happy hour items". After our first round, the hostess came over and tried to give our check to us even though we had not asked for the check. We told the hostess we wanted to order more food. The hostess made a weird face and said loudly "You can't order happy hour anymore". We were confused as there was still 30 minutes to happy hour. The hostess then brought over Thung who very loudly in a crowded restaurant accused our family of trying to take advantage of the restaurant's happy hour. Thung kept saying that happy hour items were for dine in only not take out. We explained that we are clearly dining in and had been dining in the restaurant for more than 1 hour. If we were ordering take out, we would not have parked our car, sat in the restaurant, and be expected to tip for service on the entire order. Thung said Yosaku's happy hour was like an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant where diners have to finish all their food before ordering more and diners are charged for the food they don't finish. Thung accused our family of trying to cheat the restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant started looking at our family. We responded that Yosaku is clearly not an All You Can Eat sushi restaurant. We said there is only one menu and nowhere on the menu does it say all food ordered has to be finished at the restaurant. We pointed out that we ordered more items a la carte than happy hour items - such as uni for $7.95 per piece and ikura for $5.95 per piece and specialty rolls for $10+ per roll. Our total bill would come out to more than $50 per person. Thung then stated how you people are always trying to cheat the restaurant during happy hour by ordering too much sushi and taking their leftovers home. We replied "you are making our family uncomfortable - we are trying to order 2 more pieces of sushi and dessert." Thung said "You can order but it will be a to go order and we will charge you the to go price. No happy hour." We were motified as everyone was now looking at our table. We asked for the check and told them it was unnecessary to embarass us for requesting 2 more pieces of sushi and dessert. The price difference was only $5. So for $5 total, the restaurant felt the need to berate and shame our family and disincentive us from ever returning. Note on food: We ordered tobiko (flying fish roe) which is a traditionally a orange color and is orange in the picture on the restaurant's website. Instead, our flying fish roe was black. We have never seen flying fish roe that color.
