The restaurant was modern but minimal and not obnoxious design. They do have bag hooks under the counter at the bar. They have tables and seats but better to experience at the bar. They had pop music with upbeat vibes (not too loud you can hear the person next to you). Lights were normal so you can see which is nice compared to some other dimly lit places. Decent place to experience omakase if you've never done it before. Not too fancy. Lady who was host/service was very attentive at refilling drinks and taking dishes in a timely manner. The two chefs were amazing. One prepped while one prepared the dishes. Overall the food for the price was eh. $156 for 20 courses (2 appetizers, 18 nigiri). I think it was decent to not be overly full or struggling to get to the last one. They did amazing with the salmon and bluefin tuna. Most pieces of nigiri had a small hint of wasabi. The chawamushi had an excellent flavor/texture. The tamago (egg) at the end was delicious (usually I'm picky with tamago), but they pulled it off. read more

For my birthday, I usually hit a couple of different spots and this place was on my list. This place is operated as a true Omakase, so even though there is seating for a bunch of people, the actual service is limited to the counter, which for our seating had six people allowing for a very intimate experience. Everything here was fresh and elegantly, prepared. I also really appreciate experiences where I get the opportunity to learn more about the food that I'm eating, where it comes from, as well as watching how it gets prepared. Everything was delicious, and I think my favorite dish was the chef's creation as he gives you the opportunity at the end of the dinner to add additional dishes to the Omakase menu. For my birthday, the chef was kind enough to prepare a toast with sparkling sake for all of the patrons that evening, which made my birthday extra special, and for that I am exceedingly grateful. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. This restaurant ripped me off. I accidentally made a dine in reservation for 2 thinking this place was located in Charleston, sc. I paid for the meal upfront since that was what they demanded. When I realized that I made an incorrect reservation, I cancelled it within 3 minutes. I emailed them letting them know that the reservation was made in error. They have refused to refund my money. I have had to go through my credit card company to retrieve my money. This is now our go to spot in the city. I've been trying to gatekeep it a little bit, but it is on a main road in Dupont Circle! The fish is always fresh, much of it shipped in from Japan and other seafood hotspots. I appreciate that the Uni is always high-quality, this is the place to go if you want to introduce someone to quality urchin with no stink. The best part is the omakase events that they run - an unbelievable selection and preparation of fish, plus my new favorite dessert - their coffee panna cotta. Some favorites include their akamutsu; Korean golden flounder and kombucha with its own liver; hotaru ika (firefly squid!); arrowhead squid with lime zest was maybe the best prepared squid nigiri ever; and the uni ikura bowl. Their sushi for me has ranged from very good to mediocre, and I'm talking about comparing between the same fish. It's unfortunate they have these consistency issues. The other issue is menu variety. Even their special has basically been the same. You can get tofu and rice, or curried vegetables and rice. (They ought to just combine the two.) I was apprehensive when I arrived since the place looked really small and the sushi chef there said he was totally alone (no servers, no other cooks, just the one guy). But there was a good selection of sushi at a very reasonable price, the guy was super friendly and efficient in handling our and other orders (and we ordered a lot!), and best of all the fish was great. Like the rolls are relatively simple but the quality of the fish was really high! And the guy was so so nice, he offered us a special sashimi dessert and even some shots on the house (probably since we ordered so much). My brother, who doesn't like sushi very much, even enjoyed it. So I think this spot is way undercooked--go check it out if you like sushi! read more
