Five years chartering and we're still coming back. Boats are hit and miss and so are the people who rent them. If the ship is not shape, it's how the charter works to rectify the situation. Mark with Ship Harbor Yacht Charters may not always have the answers on dozens of boats that sail in and out of the yard but he does his best to find them, tracking down the owners when needed. In the five years of bareboat chartering here, we've taken out 3 boats. As expected, each bigger and better than the last but none, a brand new boat. The Freda II, Desire, and Shadow Play all had their quirks and so goes life on a boat. I in no way would judge the charter on unforeseen issues but like I said, it's all about how they rectify them. Anacortes is a great jumping off point when heading into the San Juans, Victoria, Vancouver and beyond into Desolation Sound. Saves hours and gallons motoring up from Seattle and their ever changing inventory is sure to please all skills and budgets. Enjoy the water and maybe we'll see each other piloting into Roache for their end of summer party on Labor Day. I wish that for all of us. Safe boating. read more

I'd give it lower if I could! We signed up for a 10 day charter In September, 2021. Problems with the boat that the charter company knew or SHOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT. -- Non functioning stern thruster (they said they weren't really needed), dingy outboard intermittent, trim tabs inoperable, under inflated dingy, Additionally -,owner and male staff rude, disrespectful, non apologetic for the many problems. Company refunded $50 of the thousands we paid to compensate us for the many times we were without a dingy outboard and waiting in various ports for failed repairs. Rented a boat named TOVA. Ship Harbor knew the refrigerators were not working the day before our charter. Their answer was two ice chests and 4 bags of ice for a whole week on the boat. The holding tank gauge didn't work, the depth gauge didn't work, the Radar was from 1996. No chart plotter in the lower helm. The electric start on the outboard motor on the dingy didn't work. Blew multiple circuit breakers. Worst boat we have ever chartered. Ship Harbor has done nothing to make it right. The response from Mark was we should have reserved earlier to get a better boat. Charterer beware!! Our family had a disastrous experience with Ship Harbor Yachts Charters. Please sort Yelp reviews by date (most recent to oldest) and you can see a pattern of poor experiences that in cases (like ours) border on fraud. Here is a summary of our experience: -- Late in the afternoon on the day before our planned charter, we were notified that our boat had an engine issue and was unusable. We were given a new departure date 3 days later (which cut our planned charter short) -- Three hours after leaving Anacortes on the day of our delayed departure, the engine failed with a significant oil leak (signaled by emergency engine oil alarm). We went to the closest harbor and spent the next few days there waiting for a mechanic to fix the engine and the marine toilet on board which was also inoperable. After two days pushing Mark via phone to try to resolve our issues, a mechanic arrived and fixed the engine and toilet. The engine temperature gauges and a tachometer were not functioning throughout our trip. Given our complete lack of confidence in the safety and reliability of the boat, we returned to Anacortes and returned our charter the next day. -- When we arrived back in Anacortes, Mark indicated that he knew that they owed us money and would 'make it right' the following week. He did not. After several attempts to contact him over the following two weeks, he said it "sounded like we enjoyed our time in harbor" so was not willing to address the fact that the charter boat was inoperable and unsafe to use for almost our entire charter. I pursued some reasonable refund, but he was evasive and then in the end, attempted to resolve the issue with a 10% discount. Please consider using other charter companies in the area that have demonstrated that they deliver a more reliable, safe experience for their customers. read more

DO NOT CHARTER A BOAT WITH THIS COMPANY! We are experienced boaters and just sold our 38 ' Tolleycraft MY after 16 years of cruising. We are not experienced charterers and made the mistake of not reading all the negative reviews. We chartered the 1983 (!) Arkki which should be retired from the fleet, along with the company owner, Mark Finch. He was rude and unhelpful during check-out. There were so many problems with the boat that we couldn't leave safely for our cruise to the San Juan Islands. We tried for three days to fix all the problems: no anchor light, 3 roof leaks, stove fire in the galley, no light in the galley, unsafe life jacket, water breaker problem, no house power, no windshield wipers, conflicting advice between Mark and Glenn re: inverter use. Mark also failed to tell us that it was "normal" for the galley floorboards to rise unsafely when we filled the water tank. His belated advice was to let out some of the water, but the water pump breaker kept tripping. That was the last straw. We asked for our $4100 back, and Mark refused to refund us. We unloaded our stuff and we went home. The one star above was required and should be removed. read more

RENTER BEWARE!! While Ship Harbor Yacht Charters boasts that their "primary mission at Ship Harbor Yacht Charters is to offer the highest quality bareboat and crewed yachts available at the most convenient marina location for our charter clients" and THEY CLAIM "From check-in to checkout, experience the special touches that make Ship Harbor the best choice in the Pacific Northwest. Ship Harbor Yacht Charters rewards you with comfort, safety and a staff that is second to none." THIS IS NOT TRUE!! The experience we had recently while renting the Looby Lou sailing vessel is that the last thing on Ship Harbor's mind is a good experience for the client. The Check out and check in experience was horrible. The owner, Mark, checked us out and was rude and didn't allow us to talk and point out anything that is wrong with the boat (in order to not be responsible when we return the boat). I was going through the inventory list with him which they provide and have us go on board prior to reviewing with them... First, nothing was in its proper place for us to find and verify that the items were there, this made it difficult to get through the inventory list. Then during the review process with Mark he interrupted us on several occasions and said that continually he didn't care about the items we were asking about. We explained to him that by having us go through an inventory list to verify items are there, provides an expectation that they are there when we get back. In that case, I feel it is important that the items are verified to ensure that we aren't blamed for something we didn't lose them... Mark's response to us was "I don't care. Don't waste my time if there is a cheese grater missing." If you don't need it, it doesn't matter. He was hasty in getting through the checkout process. He showed us that the gas was not showing as full and assured us that it was. He also said that the propane was full and one tank was almost empty and the other was completely empty. It turned out that the GUAGES did not work and showed 100% full no matter the level of propane. The boat was not cleaned before we took over, the cockpit was moldy and filthy, and the cabin had a number of items that were left over from other renters. The dodger that covers the cockpit to protect from sun and rain was very old and a mess, the zippers were falling off. It was so old that it didn't keep the rain out, it puddled and then dripped through at a steady pace. The poorly designed dodger was almost impossible to see safely forward so we had to put it down so we could see safely ahead. We simply put it down and up a few times like you would a window on a car. There were no issues with this and there was no problems to put it up and down. When we returned, Marc was the same rude and impatient person. We had expected him to meet us at the fuel station and then dock the boat for us (expectation that he set when we left). The harbor is very narrow and can be difficult to navigate. We also realized the day before when we filled the tank that the gas gauge when we took it out read lower than when we filled it up. Marc demanded that we fill it up and have the receipt for the fuel with the check in date on it and that we would discuss the discrepancy later. We were able to dock the boat with no issues and the first thing Mark noticed is that the dodger was down. He immediately berated us about it being down saying that we were not told NOT put it down however that is NOT TRUE even their paperwork says its ok to open and closes windows just NOT "REMOVE" any canvas, which we did not do. The purpose of a canvas dodger is for the versatility to have it either up or down and should absolutely be able to move it without this causing damage. During check in we ALL (including Mark) reviewed the dodger carefully and there were NO issues with it other than the issues that were ALREADY THERE BEFORE which were many, zippers broken, canvas ripping, seams coming apart etc. He is now blaming us that we put a hole in the dodger. He did a thorough review of the boat while we were there and COMPLETELY CLEARED OUR CHECK IN didn't point out a hole or any other issues about the boat and we left with the understanding that all was good. A week plus after our check in a charge on our credit care showed up for a dodger fix. Marc charged us $570 for a hole in the dodger without discussing it with us first. There is no way to tell that that hole was there before we left, or it happened after we checked in the boat... I can assure you that when we put it down and back up, you get an opportunity to see the entire dodger and I'm positive there were not holes in that dodger. So renter beware save yourself some headaches and consider another charter company. read more

I will never lease a boat from this company again. My brothers and I along with our wives, 6 of us, planned for weeks on a vacation on the 40 foot Bayliner leased from Ship Harbor. We got there for early boarding, completed a check out and found out that none of the AC or DC electrical systems were working. The owner eventually informed us that he had no idea what the problem was, that we could not stay on the boat without power, and that he had no idea of when he could get it fixed. Our 9 day vacation vanished in an instant. We abandon our vacation plans and made our way back home. I should have known. My brothers and I leased a 38 foot sailboat in 2014 from Ship Harbor and it had no operating knot meter, hull speed indicator, depth gauge, radar, radar reflector and no up to date charts. Fortunately we had our own charts and an operating GPS system. This company does not take care of their boats and our experience affirms, they do not take care of their clients. read more

This is an update to my previous review A week after our charted ended The owner Mark fraudulently charged my credit card $570 for "damage" to the dodger on the boat we rented Stating that WE caused damaged by simply lowering the dodger!!! Dodgers were built to be put up and down should not be damaged by simply lowering them unless they are in already decrepit condition The dodger in fact is so old and deteriorated it (along with all the canvas etc on the boat) was literally falling apart. During our entire trip things just kept coming apart, first the stitching in several places was ripping out then zippers just popped off under simple sailing stress. The openings above the helm were unusable because the zippers fell off and the canvas tie downs ripped right off when we tried to tie them back. It is easy to tell the dodger had already been repaired several times and with a little research we were able to confirm this with a local repair shop. Like much of this boat the entire dodger should have been replaced a LONG time ago. Upon our return the entire boat was inspected for damage and cleanliness including the dodger. We actually left the boat in better and certainly cleaner condition than we received it. We were given a clean checkout ( no damage and a clean boat) with not one single complaint and went home. Then over a week later we discovered Mark had charged our card. Not one word while we were there during checkin (which is required) because as he knew we traveled over 6 hrs to get there and besides coming all the way back would have no way of fighting this or confirming the condition of the boat. Now he's charged us $570 dollars to "repair" a crumbling, dilapidated dodger that should have been thrown away and replaced. We have disputed the charge and contacted our lawyer...stay tuned for updates!! In hindsight we should have taken lots of pics and gotten witnesses bit not in our wildest dreams could imagine he would do anything like this! read more

My wife and I just got back from a week on the boat Desire, this old girl was a dirty old girl in need of major remodeling and some motor work. the boat flat smells, carpets filthy, covering old and smelly, couch old and needing replaced, Refrigerator rusting inside and won't keep food cold. SHYC Ad makes it sound like this boat is a 5 star boat and its not. When you spend that kind of money you should get something better than the SS Minnow. When we got home all of or clothing smelled like musty old clothing. I will say the the ladies at SHYC are very nice and there not the ones to put the blame on. As a charter it fell far short of what we expected. The boat Disire should be pulled and remodeled. read more

A horrible experience with Ship Harbor Yacht Charters. We not able to access the boat until 3 days after we were supposed to (due to mechanical issues), and the boat broke down on us on the first day of our cruise. We were stuck in harbor for 3 days without the ability to cruise anywhere while Ship Harbor management arranged a mechanic. All in all, we had one uninterrupted day of cruising and that was on our very last day. To add insult to injury, Ship Harbor has gone dark on us, refusing to refund us any portion of the trip. I would highly recommend looking at other charter companies. read more

Chartered a boat from Ship Harbor and was disappointed in the orientation prior to departure and the condition of the electronics on the boat. Plus, the boat was not clean...we returned it in cleaner condition than when we departed. We were told by the manager that we weren't briefed on the radar system because, "it encourages people to sail in the fog". So the boat is advertised as having radar, auto pilot, depth sounder, non of which were operational. The manager apparently hasn't considered that most people do not intentionally sail off into a fog bank, but might just experience fog as a normal part of being underway on the ocean and radar would be an important safety feature. The depth sounder on our boat was also not functioning, which is inexcusable. There were numerous other issues as well but non that would have completely eliminated the boat from charter; although, I would be very worried if an inexperienced person were to charter this boat. Our orientation session was pretty poor as well...it was obvious that the orientation person was not familiar with our boat's systems and I ended up suggesting answers to HIS questions. There were many of the boat's systems that he was learning about as he 'explained' them to us. No one could explain why the circuit breaker kept tripping when we plugged in to shore power. The manager suggested not using anything on the AC circuit...great solution. I have chartered from other San Juan companies in the past and Ship Harbor is by far at the bottom of the list. We chartered a Nauticat 44 for two weeks and had a great time. One minor glitch that was checked out within an hour of discovery. The boat was older, but was in very good shape. As there was little to no wind we did not get a chance to sail, but all mechanical and electrical systems were in good order and well laid out. What a SHITTY Charter - this was our first (and last) time chartering with Shit Harbor Yacht Charters. Our recent charter was approximately my 15th sailing charter and, by comparison with prior charters, unimpressive in every way I can think of but what was really foul was the putrid smell from one of the heads. I think we weren't fully aware of how bad it was until after we departed and I was hoping that a pump-out might resolve it. Upon further investigation, it was figured out that (1) the thru-hull would not open and (2) the hoses from the holding tank were not secure and leaked. Additionally, it looked as though a prior charterer may have attempted to pump overboard without opening the thru-hull with a predictably foul (think of a fecal explosion) outcome under the head's vanity. Upon return, we brought the issue to SHYC's attention. When I followed up early the next week, I was told that there was in fact a problem and that I he would be provided with some charter fee some reimbursement. When we disagreed about how much reimbursement was fair, SHYC changed their tune completely. Their new stance was that the boat was sent out in good order and that WE had caused the problem and we were even threatened to be charged for necessary repairs. Pretty amazing!! To me, it's negligent for a charter company to send a boat out in this condition and it's unlike any charter company I've worked with previously. There are things about a charter boat that the charter company can't control but this isn't one. A simple inspection of the heads by the cleaning crew could easily have identified this problem. Needless to say, I do NOT recommend SHYC for anyone. Even if you have to adjust your schedule in order to charter from one of the other 2 Anacortes charter outfits, it's worth while to do so. read more

We've just returned from a 4-night, 4-day trip aboard Janncera, a beautiful 43-foot Jeanneau sailboat. Plenty of elbow room for myself, my wife, and two friends. Very pleasant way to enjoy cruising the San Juan Islands. Well equipped and maintained; Plenty of cooking amenities, a great freezer and fridge in the galley. Before sunset we enjoyed cocktails and laughter outdoors, followed by dinner indoors as we were warmed by the diesel heater, playing games and listening to Jimmy Buffett. The boat is well stocked with plenty of charts, reference books, and a chart-plotter to guide us between destinations. YES the location was perfect for direct access to/from the San Juan Islands. read more

OK, SHYC is probably not the premier charter company but the price is better than others in the area. For people who had a bad experience here I ask did you even bother to tour the yacht you were chartering beforehand? We rented The Heritage for a 3 day weekend and yea it broke down, but having owned 3 boats in the past I know this was unforeseen and SHYC compensated me as their gaurentee stated. Still had a great weekend. I have no problem chartering from SHYC again and probably will. read more

For nine nears we have chartered a 50-foot Beneteau from Ship Harbor Yacht Charters (SHYC) to sail the San Juan Islands. We have found the staff to be very responsive, our chartered yacht clean, mechanically sound and ready to go when we arrive. Staff is very congenial, helpful and goes out of their way to accommodate our needs. At one time we needed to cancel the day before our trip and staff easily accommodated a make-up charter six months later with no penalty. The location of SHYC provides superior access to the San Juans and we recommend this charter company to everyone we know who sails through chartering. read more

First of all, let me tell you that this company does not give a shit about what happens to your boat, and definitely does not give a shit about it's customers OR workers. I worked here for a summer job with my boyfriend. One of the managers, Reni, is the one who is in charge of telling everyone what to do. She puts her workers down, calls them stupid, makes them feel stupid, talks shit about her customers every single day, and there is no way possible to convince her that she isn't right about something. I got sick with a hiatal hernia during work, and while I understand getting fired due to being sick, I DON'T understand the part when she texted my boyfriend's parents, telling them I was faking it and couldn't handle responsibility. This company is run by evil people who only care about sucking money off of other people's property. The workers here deserve better, and so do the customers. read more

Our boat had many more items not working than working. Mystere should be retired. No electronics work. No fridge, no hot water, toilet back flowed sewage in boat, cushions were worn out and sleeping on hard plywood. Sails were worn out and boom vang broke. The dodger was so worn out you could not see out of it. My yacht club friends tell me that I rented from the wrong company that their boats have been very nice from Anacortes Yacht Charters. Spend two hundred more and have a nice time on a nice boat. read more

We had a bad experience as well. It started with a burnt out light in the head and a dinghy motor that ran for 200 yards and then quit (Mark had assured me that it was working well and had just been checked). We then happened to hit a rock that was about 6 feet down (the boat drew 7 feet), called in immediately and spent the rest of the day returning to Anacortes. The boat was hauled out the next morning, with no hull or significant damage to the cast-iron keel. A marine surveyor inspected the boat when it was hauled out and said that there was fine to return to the water and was not significantly damaged. Mark was ready to put it back into the water and let us continue on, but I showed him that a battery and the water heater had moved out of place (the water heater was unsecured to begin with). So, minor repairs. We removed our belongings to facilitate repairs and a complete check of the hull from inside (keel bolts, etc.) I checked back to see how repairs were going over the next two days and was told various stories about their not being able to get the work done. I went to the marina on the morning of day 3 after the incident to return towels and retrieve a crab pot bag that had been left aboard. The boat was fine -- everything in place. Mark was not in and when I called, he said that he had no way to predict the timing of repairs (all minor) and that just that morning the salon had battery acid throughout. [The batteries are sealed and were not broken -- i went to the dock and confirmed this.] Then he told me that the water tanks were leaking and more extensive repairs were needed -- but they had just cleaned the salon! We had been on the boat for 24 hours after the accident, no water in the bilge other than the minor amount always present in a boat, the automatic bilge pump never came on and when ran the back-up, it ran and sounded just as it had prior to the incident. So, no tank damage and no hull damage (paint was scraped off of the keel, but no apparent dent). Mark refused to let us back on or to refund the 4 days of the charter still remaining on the contract. So, we did all that we were responsible to do, reporting the incident, returning to port and co-operating completely and Mark simply never told the truth, covering even after I had seen the boat. I requested that a survey be completed and sent to me that would substantiate the claims of damage that Mark made. If it comes and substantiates the damage as per Mark's comments, I'll be back to Yelp and correct the record. The single star above should be preceded by a negative sign. I'll not be back. read more

We have chartered in the BVI, Ontario (Canada), Nanaimo (Canada) and in Long Beach, California. We would NOT charter with Ship Harbor again! Our boat broke down while we were 2 days into our 10 day charter and all Mark had to say was "WOW you are really far away and do you want to continue with your charter?"......we found our own mechanic, paid for the repair out of our own pocket and then upon return to base were treated rarely poorly while Mark was courting a new client! We were told that a refund would be mailed to us for the repair!! We insisted on being paid before we left and Marsha did accommodate us, but seemed surprised at our request. We are experienced sailors and boat owners.....the boat we chartered was not maintained properly and will probably continue to break down. Next year when we charter our 2 week trip we will be chartering with Nanaimo Yacht Charters....we won't mind paying a little more for the peace of mind that our boat will be in tip top shape and that we will be treated like the good paying customers we are!! read more

Poor awareness, maintenance and service, which resulted in delay of my vacation and additional expense to me. I am an experienced sailor who paid in full 90 days in advance only to find the boat's electrical system failing. Only available replacement was a diesel powerboat. Very disappointing for me and my guests planning on sailing. Future charters in the San Juans will be pursued via a lager company with competent maintenance staff and enough cash flow to cover for problems. read more

In the winter of 2014, my father and our family reserved a charter with Ship Harbor Yacht Charters for the July 4th holiday week of 2015. We are experienced sailors and have chartered in many places with many charter companies. Three months before we were to charter the boat, my father passed away. When we contacted Ship Harbor Yacht Charters to cancel the trip, we were notified that we would not be refunded our deposit. Only if another party was to rent the boat during the timeframe were we going to get our deposit returned. OK, not the most compassionate policy, but I understand, they are running a business. We called SHYC routinely to inquire about the rental and would always hear "unfortunately, no one has rented it, sorry". Then I called anonymously and asked if the boat was available, "sorry, no it isn't" I was thrilled, someone has rented it! Once I revealed that I was with the family who had originally reserved it and I would like my deposit back, I heard "Oh, it's the owner who is taking the boat for the week, so we can't return your deposit". What?! They couldn't rent it because the owner was taking the boat. If the owner is taking the boat, then they should return the deposit. read more

This charter company should be ashamed of itself renting yachts to unsuspecting charterers. The boat we chartered smelled, the holding tanks leaked and needs major work, electronics don't work well, trim tabs don't work, boat smokes when starting and covers back of boat in soot, anchor chain dangerous to use.....the list goes on and on. It also needs major cleaning, drawers/cupboards dirty inside. We washed everything before using. Anchor locker opened under way spilling muddy chain all over bed. Furniture do uncomfortable standing was a better option. If captain and crew were not capable mechanics and have many years of yachting experience, this company would have been dispatching assistance every place we went. Manager as much as ignored our complaints and was rude. We felt we should have been offered a partial refund for all the inconvenience. Strongly recommend no one charter from this company. I was VERY pleased with Ship Harbor Yacht Charters. Upon our arrival we were greeted by a very gracious and welcoming staff. Marsha answered all of our questions very well and even did a little extra work and got us a great slip at Friday Harbor. SHYC's main dock was about twenty feet from their office. That was GREAT! So easy to load and unload our baggage, it was perfect!!! We chartered the yacht Christelle and our friends chartered Sienne. These sail boats were impeccable! The yachts were very clean, well kept, spacious and more then we ever expected. Just seeing the yachts got me very excited about our vacation. Mark was or checkout captain and he knew the boat from top to bottom. He showed my husband the boats systems with out a question in his mind, and even helped him improve his navigation skills (even though me husband would never admit that ha!). I asked Shannon (a SHYC staff member) for some extra linens and she dropped everything she was doing, ran up to the office and came back arms full with linens. She was back within a blink of a eye. I just cant express how much I loved the staff. The San Juans were such a great place to visit and we lucked out with gorgeous weather in Washington (must be the rain shadow from the mountains).
