While my daughter seemed to enjoy herself and spoke positively about the experience, the overall setup left me uneasy as a parent. Camp Kirby is located on a small island about 35 minutes from Bellingham. The setting is rustic and remote, and you have to drive very slowly down a long road to reach it. It's an unusual place, quiet and tucked away, but also far removed from anything else. The biggest issue for me was the lack of transparency and connection with the camp itself. Drop-off and pickup were tightly controlled: you wait in a long car line, staff approach your window, and then you're expected to drive off. There was no opportunity to meet the counselors, interact with other parents, or even glimpse the facilities. I asked nicely twice during the week if I could just see where my daughter was spending her day, and was told both times to email the director due to camper privacy. I understand wanting to protect kids, but other Camp Fire locations I've attended have found ways to balance privacy with openness. Here, I left every day with no idea what the camp looked like or what was going on inside. Communication was also minimal. Other camps send daily updates with photos and summaries. At Kirby we received one brief email and a photo album with a single blurry side photo of my daughter. I strongly recommend that Camp Kirby improve transparency by posting photos or videos of the grounds and facilities online. Even a virtual tour would go a long way toward helping parents understand where their kids will be all week. As it stands, I still have no idea what the space looks like. They offer one open house in the spring, but unless you live nearby, that's not realistic. The counselors seemed kind, though a little overwhelmed. And while my daughter's experience may have been positive, I genuinely don't know, because parents are kept completely at arm's length. I wouldn't recommend this camp unless you live nearby or already know someone with firsthand experience. They need to build more trust with parents and provide a clearer window into what's actually happening during the week.

Ahh, Whispering Firs. A tale of two sides, if there ever was one. My wife and I stayed here…read morerecently and had some very good experiences and thoughts...but also had some very negative things as well. We had originally booked two nights, but because of the negatives we ended up staying just the first night and checked-out early. Here's the tale of the tape: The Good: - Linda and Vic (the innkeepers) are very nice. Extremely friendly and easy to talk to, Linda made us feel at home straightaway and was great company and conversation during breakfast. - Speaking of, the food was really good. We had blueberry cream cheese pancakes, bacon, and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Along side juice, fruit, and coffee/tea. Linda was also very accommodating toward dietary concerns too. - The property and view is gorgeous! Located up on a mountain area, Whispering Firs overlooks the valley and you can even see the Sound and Whidbey Island. - The house itself is warm, comfortable, and inviting. There's a beautiful deck on the backside that it multi-tiered and has a walking path around little ponds. This would be great for entertaining and lounging. The Bad: - To get there, you have to drive up a half-mile gravel road that is full of potholes and bumps. It's narrow and not something that a regular car can navigate quickly. Wish we had a 4x4 vehicle. - The bed in our room (the North Suite) was way too high. It sounds weird to say that, but at roughly 3 feet high, it was a struggle for my 8 month pregnant wife to literally climb in and out of. - There were no curtains on the windows...just blinds that didn't block out all of the light and sight lines. So, there was a big lack of privacy seeing as the windows looked out onto the deck. - This room is located right next to the breakfast room, so it is extremely loud in the mornings. Breakfast is normally served at 8:30, but our morning had a group that wanted to eat at 7:00. That meant at 6:30 things got rolling on the other side of the wall and we heard it all. Neither Good nor Bad, Just Depends on You Point of View: - There is a large collection of stuffed animals (the taxidermy type) throughout the house and bedrooms. A hunter's paradise...so may not be up your alley. All in all, this could be a lovely place to stay; but it just didn't suite us and fit our needs. For someone else, it might be perfect. In this review, I'm simply wanting you to be better informed that I was. Hope it helps.

Looking to turn things around, I decide to install the kid seat on the back of my wife's bike for our 2 y.o. so we can do the ol' family bike ride (that'll fix it!). In a moment of overzealousness though, I give that over-tight, cheap screw in the back of her bike a turn-too-many with the allen wrench: it's stripped, but maybe salvageable. But what do I do? I think, "I can still get it...." So I jump back in there: cheap screw vs. cheap allen wrench, and I send that screw straight to The Land of No Return. It's never coming out now. Enter Seth and Meat Machine. Now, mind you, I had already been down there the day before - or my wife had - for another bike-related issue (I told you - it was that kind of weekend). So, I limp in there, figuratively speaking, and in my shame I present El Strippo to Seth. What does he do? He doesn't make my feel bad. He doesn't hesitate. Immediately, almost un-questioningly, he throws that bad boy up on the lift. He explains that this is not going to be easy and expresses concern that he'll break the head off the screw and then it's done (the seat is never going on in that case). He tries one expensive hex after another. No dice. Last resort: he busts out the blow torch. "Let's put a little heat on it." And he does, and, like magic, that baby starts to move! With the turning of the screw, hearts lift, hope returns - the screw it out. The day - the family bike ride - is saved. No charge. I headed outside and, literally, the clouds cleared (though I'm not sure I credit Seth with that one). But he and Meat Machine did save the day, no doubt. Great little shop. Friendly helpful guys. Nothing was broken, no bike was rolled away with, Kenny just needs to take a class or read a book or two on customer service. Shortly before she came in I was in the store looking to rent a bike. I came in with the intention of renting at 2:30 on a Tuesday and returning 10:00 am on Thursday around 44 hours. So I asked if he could give me a potential discount and he basically laughed in my face and said no, we only do calendar day rentals. So $72 a day, which is ridiculous because the other local bike store rentals for $45 a day for a similar bike. For 3 days, there is a 3 day discount of $24 off equalling $192, still ridiculous for 44 hours. They did have ten or so identical bikes outside so Kenny must be a trust fund baby or something just leaving business out there. Neither of us got a welcoming experience or any type of feeling of hospitality or simply want to have us in the store. I recommend Lopez kayaks and bicycle works just down the road, completely different experience. The only reason we didn't is they weren't open for the season yet. Id rather walk the island than rent from Village Cycles.

So, as a female, I went with my black and white Under Armour shoes, black athletic sweatpants, and a dark red crew neck sweatshirt. I cut my hair myself in a 5 millimeter buzzcut style on the Tuesday (9 May 2023) before the lunch to be crisp for the occasion. I encountered no problems in the workers correctly identifying my gender, and was not turned away. The floor plan/spacing between the tables was pleasant and the chairs had wheels on the bottom, making them easy to move, which I found nice. The lunch buffet had a breakfast section, a more savory lunch section, and a dessert section. All of the items I tried, including scrambled eggs and salsa, salad, bacon, biscuits and gravy, and a cheese blintz, were tasty. My belly was content after one round of the main buffet items. For dessert I went with a carefully cut square/rectangle of yellow cake (not lemon cake) that had a good classic yellow cake flavor and a fluffy/airy cream cheese frosting. The frosting paired with the cake exquisitely and I did not share. All of the workers were friendly and the parking lot was easily accessible. The front also has an area to pull up and pick-up/drop-off people, which was perfect for grandma.

Everyone was amazing. The owners Gregg and Heather along with the entire staff were extremely nice and hospitable. The grounds were palatial and well manicured along with the well maintained buildings. They also answered a lot of my questions since I was very curious about a working equestrian farm. My daughter who loves horses too had a great time. The accommodations are on point and met my expectations. Thank you for the wonderful breakfasts too. Make sure to try Gregg's world famous French toast! We will definitely come back. read more

When we pulled in to the parking lot, there was a deer standing there waiting to greet us.

Breakfast entrees change every day, and on our day we had a hearty, flavorful bacon quiche. They did offer other options, like spinach quiche, or a gluten free breakfast (I think it was an omelette that day), which is very considerate. We also were given a fruit and yogurt bowl, and what I think was chocolate chip pound cake. Coffee was continuously poured into our cups. I would definitely stay here again if I were to return to Coupeville!

I paid for the pullout but ended up sharing the other bed for the sake of my back Conflict- the room is non smoking but when I asked he clarified that my mom could smoke outside if she didn't leave her butts around. She threw them away inside as there was no outside trash and after leaving I received an email mentioning the smell from the trash. Not sure what else she should have done here? Also keep in mind his punctuality. We agreed to breakfast at 9:30 and mom went up at 9:33. She tells me he seemed agitated that she was late. We would have skipped the continental breakfast entirely except there is no in room coffee maker. He did lay out a nice variety for us for breakfast foods. In the email about the smoke smell he also implied that I underpaid. This was frustrating since he seemed fine when we were there. I checked my receipt and had paid what he asked (125/night+$10/night for pullout). I paid $276 to include tax as he asked. From his email I now gather that the tax was $26. He said he hadn't counted my cash but my receipt reflects the total amount so that isn't the issue. I'm disapointed to end the trip on this note after enjoying ourselves so much over the weekend. Renting here is like paying to rent a friend's room. Lots of rustic charm and great view, just seems to struggle with straddling the professional/friendly line. I appreciate him opening his home. I don't expect to return after the conflicts.

This is a wonderful place if you want to be close to town and still feel surrounded by nature. I was visiting for a workshop at the art center and if you were more energetic than I was, it would be within walking distance. I wish I had more time to stay to enjoy many more activities and sites. Maybe another time. I would certainly try and stay here again! One thing that struck me as special was Holly's care to provide breakfast items to meet your own personal tastes and her daily housekeeping service and fresh flowers.

First, and most importantly, innkeepers Charlene and Beth were absolutely stellar. Friendly and helpful at every turn. Glad they were there to greet us when we arrived ahead of schedule and give us guidance about where to go until our room was ready. Our room was very comfortable. Nice cozy bed and great bath towels; a very important detial that is often that's overlooked. The inside common areas of the inn were very nice. Well-appointed community kitchen. We had a king room with a large deck. The view from our deck across the Saratoga Passage included unostructed views of Whidbey Ialand. When the sky was clear, the view included an incredible sunset, crescent moon, and the comings and goings of bats which we just loved. The inn is centrally located to nearby parks and access to the island's amazing food offerings including Cama Beach Cafe, Blue Heron, Vivo, The Baked Cafe (recommended by Charlene), and more. Nearby, we also enjoyed a wonderful tour of Matzke Gallery and Sculpture Garden, and shared time with the owner, Karla Matzke. If you prefer, you can prepare meals in the kitchen. Understand, this is more like an AirB&B. You will be provided with a numeric key for the front door and your room. Staff is available on a somewhat limited basis. Coffee is provided in the lobby, but you may need to make more as needed. The reason I have left this as a four-star review is that there were a few issues with the property. I reached out the manager and she "promised" these matters would be addressed. It's unlikely we'll get back there anytime soon and hope she will keep her word. Yes, it is the little things!

I will start by saying I was very let down by this location. I booked this through my Delta stays…read moreand expected it to be more on the up and up. When I first arrived it was like a ghost town, there was no other car anywhere around . When First arriving I looked around the grounds and overall it looked pretty but was not kept up at all, tons of potential for the gardens and I could easily have those grounds looking amazing in a matter of a couple of days and very little cost. Now its time to go inside, the front door entrance is manned by a digital smart lock to get in. There are no employees inside either, empty desk sitting by the door thats small, over to the left a small coffee pot and a water kettle and then a room with what looks like for the Bistro that also has apparently been closed for a long time and breakfast was something mentioned. The inside is very pretty but very dated. A friend of mine found some history about the place they also do not like to add to their site and they should since some would love it. Apparently the place is supposed to be haunted, a long time ago it says it was a nursing home and other things. I joked that my room or my toothbrush was haunted the first night but thats a story for another time. Going past the office area there is what looks like once was a bar for people to come and have a drink and hangout, it just had bottles of water on the bar. To the right there is a room with a couch, some chairs and a fireplace I did not see turned on once or a way to turn it on easily. Got to my room next which was number 2 and straight in from the front entrance pretty much. The rooms are also on a smart lock and they text you these codes way ahead of time, I sure hope they randomize them too after stays. I go into the room and its smaller than I was expecting but thats fine, to the left we have a closet with a couple of the roughest robes I ever decided to try on, they feel like a cheap towell and same type of material. The bathroom is right after that closet and the bathroom is not too horrible but also a bit dated, they could not even match the light bulbs. The shower looked like it could use a good cleaning including the showerhead with a lot of scale buildup. The mirror had chips in it and sharp edges being a bit unsafe for those not paying attention. Now into the room itself, there was an antique style dresser that was not antique, you can see the wood warping on the top from moisture as well. On that there is one of the smallest tv's ever with old resolution. The bed was not the most comfortable nor the bedding itself. On the patio is a hot tub thats a bit smaller than I expected it to be. The hedges are way overgrown and also limit some of the view, I seen from old comments this has been an issue for a while they fail to address. The fixtures have old style dim bulbs in them.The room had no fridge, no microwave, no coffee pot etc. You have to go out to the office area and brew a pot yourself since they also do not brew any coffee for the guest it appears in the mornings either, still no employees found during the morning hours. The curtains for the sliding door were falling apart and you could not easily close them nor have full privacy. The sliding door does not even lock, they have a piece of flimsy wood for it. The 2nd night there were complaints of rooms out of power, found the father of the owner showing up at the same time and was asking me if I had power. The internet was also down the entire time while cell phone coverage being extremely limited so I had to drive to town just to be able to load anything and I had a lot to get done. I will say this hotel is a waste of money, this is one hotel or inn I will not return to, even budget motels offer more. Looking at some of the reviews here and I see some of these issues has been around for more than a couple of years and the owners have not addressed a single one of them. How they remain in business is beyond me, maybe due to the travel sites still listing it as more.
